Welcome to Kyr...
a world rife with magic, monsters and crude, arcane technology. Magic is practiced all over the world, sometimes by the high priests of ancient cults who trace their lineage back to pre imperial times, sometimes by enterprising street urchins looking to levitate valuables out of unguarded pockets. For those who lack the talent, or find themselves faced with a problem surpassing their own command of the arcane, there are the Freecaster Guilds, groups of experienced or not so experienced mages willing to hire out their services for the right price. Free casters face different attitudes and laws in different regions of the world, but they are present anywhere there are enough people in some capacity. They hunt monsters, track down missing people, arrest bandits and other criminals. Freecasting is a life of uncertainty and danger but for any aspiring mage it’s the perfect way to hone one’s craft and make some coin on the side.

To the city of Merryvale...
A bustling trade hub in the small, but prosperous Heartlands country of Valora, Merryvale is the perfect place for an aspiring freecaster to ply their trade. Originally a modest farming village, Merryvale has grown rapidly to a regional centre of commerce and industry. This growth has forced the burgeoning city to encroach on the densely forested territory to the North resulting in increased aggression from the local monster population. Meanwhile the city's booming population has outstripped the ability of the authorities to police it, resulting in the growth of a criminal underworld. Yes indeed between bounty hunting, monster suppression and the occasional, more unusual job the freecasters of Merryvale are always in demand and well paid for their trouble.

And to the Goldfire Company...
That's where you come in! For reasons of your own, you've decided to take up the adventurous lifestyle of a Freecaster, congratulations! Unfortunately the life of a solo freecaster isn't all that enviable so your first order of business should be to find a guild to join. Guilds have all sorts of useful contacts, ensuring a steady supply of jobs and they also offer affordable lodgings and instruction for their members. Most importantly guilds offer comrades to work alongside, commiserate with and harness the the almighty power of friendship with! As a rookie freecaster you don't have much of a reputation yet, so you'll struggle to get a foot in the door at the more prestigious guilds operating in Merryvale, but fortunately you've heard a rumour that someone is starting up a brand new guild called the Goldfire Company! Whether you view this as a chance to forge bonds that will last a life time or just an easy way to make some coin this is an opportunity you can't afford to miss out on! The word is, the Goldfire Company will be holding some kind of tryout tomorrow in the market square. With any luck, your potential will shine through and you'll make the cut!

Welcome to Freecasters!!
Hi, hello, thanks for reading so far. Freecaster is an original setting and concept, although it definitely wears some influences on its sleeve. This rp is my take on a guild based, western fantasy by way of anime and JRPG, it's heavily inspired by franchises like Fairy tail, although I hope to take a slightly more in depth approach to worldbuilding and mechanics. You can expect a lot of the genre trappings you've grown accustomed to here, the standard races such as elves and dwarves are present and the RP will be centred around a guild similar to ones that have been present in all kinds of RPGS and other media, this guild is brand new so it will be up to our characters to build up its reputation and values and really make it our own. As you might expect you'll be taking on various requests from clients in exchange for money and experience, allowing your character to grow stronger through a simple stat system. AS you will have noticed, Freecasters focuses especially on magic and mages but you don't necessarily have to be a robes and pointy hat kind of mage. Through our flexible and simple mechanics raise attributes like strength, stamina or dexterity and learn spells that complement melee combat or archery or you can get even more creative than that and chart an entirely novel approach to combat and problem solving.

In terms of its structure, this rp will strike a middle ground between open ended, sandbox style gameplay and more structured, cinematic storylines. Most of the time you'll be free to add your character to any of the missions currently being offered and you'll be heavily encouraged to and rewarded for setting up your own missions for other players. You'll also be free to engage in non mission scenes that develop your character, their relationships with other characters or the world around you, you'll be encouraged for RPing extra scenes like that as well, that add to the richness of our shared story.

Anyways if any of that sounds appealing then keep reading! I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

What to expect from Freecasters!

  • An expansive world to explore and develop! Collaborate with GMs and fellow players to add in new locations, characters and events!

  • Utilising a simple, flexible system create your own mage with a unique skillset and style of magic! Watch them grow more capable over time as they confront and overcome obstacles!

  • Between structured main story missions you'll have the chance to play in and create and run side missions! Flesh out the world of Valora and your characters and earn valuable extra stat points for improving your character!

Our expectations and Rules

  • The RPN site rules are in effect: This is pretty obvious and everyone should be familiar with them but if you need a refresher Here is the link.

  • The GM and any potential Co-Gm's are in charge: That would just be me at present, but it's possible I'll take on more staff in response to the needs of the RP.

  • Remain respectful of your fellow RPers: Just be cool to each other, even if you have disagreements or find your personalities don't quite mesh do your best to remain civil. If you can't resolve any disputes to your mutual satisfaction I or another GM will step in.

  • Let your voice be Heard: If you're not sure about something or just have a great idea for the RP let us know! We can't do anything about it if it stays in your head. We will eventually have a discord server open to all players for easy communication. You can also post anything like that in the OOC and free to PM me if you would rather speak privately, I'll do my best to stay on top of such correspondence.

  • No Godmodding: Broadly speaking godmodding refers to controlling someone else's characters by writing their reactions or confirming attacks on them in your own post. This isn't very fun to deal with for the other person and not conducive to good roleplaying. Don't ever do it to another player without their permission and be careful about doing it to NPC's.

  • Do your best in terms post length and quality: We are aiming for detailed with this RP, multiple paragraph responses with good spelling and grammar are ideal. We can be flexible about this to some extent, scenarios and situations just aren't conducive to long posts and sometimes people are tired or busy. The bare minimum is a paragraph or so that's been given a good once over for errors. Detailed responses give your RP partners more to work with and make you more fun to RP alongside so it's to everyone's benefit if we all do our best. If I feel like your responses lacking then I'll reach out and we can have a friendly chat about how to extend and improve your writing.

  • Post Regularly or Stay in contact when you cant: We can work out more detailed versions on a case by case basis, but the short version is this: If you don't post when a scene is waiting on you after a week you will be skipped over, after two you will be removed from the RP. We can always make exceptions to this rule for people who talk to us and give us notice when they aren't able to post, but if we don't hear from you that's the end of it.

  • Read all the provided material: These are in the linked threads. There's won't be a crazy amount here and you don't have to memorize it or anything, just give it a good once over.

  • Oh and most importantly of all...

    Have Fun!

Sounds like an idea with a fair amount of thought and planning behind it. I'm into it! Consider me interested! How do you feel about necromancers?

you would probably need to operate with some discretion and ethics. Wrenching grandpa from his eternal rest in front of his family? probably gonna come with some consequences. Striking some fair deals with spirits of the dead who want to walk the earth again or puppeting some old bones nobody really cares about? you can probably swing that. Not on the carpet though~

How do we feel about Goblins? I have some ideas regarding a runaway from their clan. They may not know of the socially acceptable practices of Necromancy from a human standpoint. Would this be possible? I'm more than happy to discuss this with you beforehand. And shoulder the consequences if it's acceptable 😁

Any particular expectations for the frequency of posts? And are you expecting a large number of players/characters for this RP?

So generally goblins here are pretty hostile and receive hostility in return but I could sort of see a runaway squeaking by disguised as a stunty, diseased elf or something, I think we can swing this.

mmm so you can see in the first post there our expectations and such. I like to aim for something like a once a week post rotation but that can be faster if your character is i multiple scenes or slower if you just happen to be busy or whatever, I'm ultimately pretty flexible as long as you stay in touch but you might end up being skipped over if other players would be kept waiting longer than that one week sorta period.

In terms of your second question I can handle around 8 players by myself, but if I end up taking on a co-gm or being able to farm out some of my responsibilities to players that number might increase.

*I put on my robes and wizard hat*

Whats the cultural situation of Merryvale?

Are they a centre for anything?

Whats the most locally produced grain type?

Prices on exotic metals?

I have an idea for a character but it's looking difficult to do as I want to play a rabbit beastkin however there are only foxes, cars, dogs and bears. Additionally I'm trying to think of a way so that her magic is her transforming her body parts into monster features, such as horns or teeth

Sounds like a green magic specialist, then

That's what I assumed as well, just getting my thoughts out there and it's more the race I'm wondering about

I quite like this. Reminds me of an old guild based roleplay I did on this site. I dig the structure, and am playing a lot of Noita so wands and flexible magic are on my mind. I'd love to learn more about character making and in-depth mechanics to write something for this.

Edit: Completely missed the other tabs. I'll read that now.

It's likely not going to be first come first serve. Knowing Atl, folks better be prepared for a writing sample of the sort.

Dude is a quality GM I will say without doubt.

So... what you are saying is even physical fighters should have some magic to supplement them?

Someone needs to make a physical character that 100% shirks off using magic at all. :)

I've done that too many times already....

To not do it

yea try mentioning em? Lots of folks piling in one the int check.
