So much to catch up on today! XD I just wanted to comment on a couple things.

DKFHDJSKL this is the best part of my day already! Me @ my English: thank you ... for English-ing right. EW I'M EMOTIONAL NOW. DO U KNOW HOW HARD ENGLISH IS WHEN THEY THROWN THE HOMONYMS ARE YOU AND IT'S LIKE?? Jesus which Latin / Greek scholar thought it was a brilliant idea to have homonyms? And then the pronunciation! There are no English rules for pronunciation! Spanish, French, Italian are easy because everything is linear but English like, "g'luck m8. Try not to die. I'll see you in eight years when you're taking the national English exams".
It's largely because English is, like all of the above. Plus whatever they came up with along the way.

And honestly some grammar rules are just dumb as shit, like the "THOU SHALT NOT SPLIT AN INFINITIVE" thing. There's no reason not to and half the time it sounds more natural. It was just decreed thusly because in Latin it's LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to split the infinitive because it's one word and there is NO REASON THAT THAT NEEDS TO BE A RULE IN ENGLISH, DAMMIT. STOP SAYING THAT THE STAR TREK MONOLOGUE HAS A MISTAKE IN IT. "TO GO BOLDLY" JUST SOUNDS DUMB.
I think split infinitives are actually allowed in professional writing nowadays. Not in school, maybe, but afterwards.

Just shaking my head and laughing at the rest. You all are a trip, and I'm so happy to be in this with you!

Sometimes, I'm really really glad that I was homeschooled. Apparently in English classes they teach kids to never use the word "said" in stories and that's why people use those goddamn annoying distracting bullshit said-substitute words when they're not trying to emphasize action or the tone/mood of whatever was said and I just want to personally fight whoever came up with that bullshit because it is the BANE of my EXISTENCE, just barely beating out the use of "orbs" and "optics" when you could just SAY EYES AND NOT SOUND FUCKING STUPID because it's more prevalent.

i just. i get really passionate about writing ok. i say as i avoid writing for weeks and months on end and then write crap.

*rocks back and forth mumbling about everything being unclean*

I just want to say I have a degree in English and I can't recall in any of my public education experience nor my collegiate experience being taught that saying "said" was wrong. The only time it's a bad choice is when it becomes very repetitive; you don't want to say 'said' ten times in a row when another verb might be more descriptive and sound less journalistic. (That is a thing we were taught in journalism class. Always use 'said' and don't editorialize the statement being creative with your verb use.) I rage when I see the same word several times in a row myself. =)

A lot of high school and college basic English classes are trying to prepare you for your professional career. I work in law (I'm a paralegal) and I can tell you are least in my career it's important to sound polished unless you have a good rapport with a particular client. I actually very nearly went into teaching and even had a provisional teaching license. A lot of my students when I did student teaching thought you could talk informally and it would never affect your prospects and didn't see the point to learning simple writing techniques.

I do three things after I write anything:
1. Glance over for grammatical errors
2. Make certain I didn't repeat a word ten times over (especially using the same pronoun six times in two lines)
3. Take out unnecessary little words that weaken the writing unless it's a stylistic choice

I am a victim of the public schooling system and have had several teachers tell me to search for better words than "said". I clearly have not listened to them. I find that if I am using the same word over and over again, I either look up an alternative in the thesaurus, or I try to rethink what I am writing. If I am overusing the same subject, perhaps there is something wrong with what I am writing about rather than how I am writing. With school papers and the like, I do a really thorough edit and revision process. For roleplay replies, I try not to worry too much and mostly focus on grammar and spelling. If I tried to make every post pristine, I would never make a post on time.

wha.... what world were they living in?!?!?!?!

same tho. this is my defense for any stylistic badness or ridiculous character choices I may or may not make in the future.

I've taken notes on the aforementioned posts about grammar. :P
It was interesting to read from an English-speaker's perspective!

I have only been in private schools (I'm talking uniforms, rigorous academics / sports, the whole gig). I only got out of it for university. Private schools are small, so first year of university was a bit of a culture shock with the sheer number of students. But! I'm having a blast! Only the first week was rough since I had to find my way to classrooms and push through a sea of students, but once I got past that, I fit in easily and went back to receiving my As. :)

I did my student teaching at a magnet school in Raleigh, North Carolina. I was working with a few "average" students but a lot of "poor performing" students of lower socioeconomic status.

One of the part-timers at my job several years back argued with me he didn't think there was a point to teaching English in high school. He thought students should get to elect what subjects they wanted to study without standardized requirements, and he in particular felt that English was a "stupid subject." So it's definitely a prevalent thought albeit not necessarily among the RPN crowd.

In my daily writing for work I don't use the word "said" a lot. I use "advised" and "stated" about as often or moreso than "said" since they're more formal. Sometimes when I write a post on my lunch break I slip into that vernacular. =x

North Carolina? That explains it. I live here. I love my state but good god I hate it.

Wake County has a great school system. The best teachers from across the state will come to Wake County. The problem isn't actually the teachers, necessarily, as the blame is so often placed. I had a student in my class who brought her child to one of our parent-teacher nights. We had a student in our class write about how he watched a relative get shot when he was in middle school. You have parents that are uninvolved because they work two jobs to make ends meet, or they had their kids too young, or they are barely keeping it together- take your pick. With the other students you have different struggles. Some parents will accept their child did poorly because they didn't put in effort, either because they didn't care or didn't study, but others believe their student's education is your responsibility entirely. Junior didn't get a 97%? It's not his fault, it's yours for not motivating him or being too rough on him. Your test was unfair. You don't know what you're teaching.

A big reason I left teaching? Because when students test poorly it is never their fault. It is always the teacher's, and you can try as hard as you can to teach them, and dazzle them with fun projects, and come to class in costume, and they still might not do well. They might still not care. And how they do is how you will be evaluated. I have nothing but admiration for my friends that teach (two teach high school science, one teaches ESL) and my family that taught (elementary school, high school English, and high school art). You have to really love what you're doing and really love students to put yourself out there day after day.

But anyway.

I had friends go to North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. They are brilliant guys. My husband went to a rural high school (Brunswick County) and turned out stellar and did better with both his degrees than I did. I went to a very good high school in Greensboro (Guilford County), and I definitely learned my weak subjects my senior year! The biggest issue North Carolina faces is the bureaucracy; our teachers aren't paid or supported very well. That's my opinion anyway.

My eldest son starts school in the fall. =)

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you there. The government here is a mess. It seems like money goes everywhere except where it needs to be. It makes me kinda sad. My perspective is probably a bit skewed, too- I lived in a really rural area, where people actually put Trump/Pence signs in their yards. Like, unironically and without shame. And then I went to UNC, which is just a completely different (and absolutely wonderful) environment. And right now I'm in the Spring Lake/Fayetteville area, which I probably hate more than it really deserves, but just... ugh. I can't wait to get back to UNC and not fail all my classes this time.

wow, that's exciting! I hope things go well for him!

I went to NC State, but one of my friends currently works at UNC (she is not teaching staff or even close, works on the website and stuff I believe).

that's so cool! Man, I miss Chapel Hill so much. It's worse with the NCAA championship because of course the year we win is the year I'm not there to enjoy it. OF COURSE.

Hey nerds! While we're waiting for more replies, check out the new poll. As surprising as this may sound, the lore is actually very bare. It used to be about twice its length before I cut it down in size for the sake of the interest check stage. I will gradually add more materials to the Survival Guide but I want to know what you guys would like to see first. Please use the poll above! :)

Reminder that the scene moves tomorrow!

It is only logical that I choose medicine to be expanded on, unless y'alls characters just wanna die.
