A manifestation of the Gods' will on the green earth.
It's a symbol, some say, a mark of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, pitying the affairs of the plain man.

It was a man that came to the temple that day, a man who had never even stepped foot into the holy place, a man that reeked of sake and filth. The monks, though pure and regarded all life as precious, scowled when the man entered. Yet even their judgemental eyes wouldn't stop this stranger’s steps. He knelt in the face of Teuchi, the temple's leader, a grand monk that emitted a heavenly ambiance to those who looked at him.

The man, panting in his ragged clothes, prostrated in Teuchi's presence. His hands clasped, his forehead kissing the ground, "The Outsiders have arrived, Amaterasu beckoned us to Mount Tengoku!" The man said, trembling with fear.

The monks around him whispered, some reached for their water skin to come to his aid, however, Teuchi raised his hand.

Suddenly, silence. None moved, some had their breath at the base of their throat. The only thing heard there was the prattling of the terrified man.

Teuchi leaned closer to the stranger. He laid a hand on his shoulder, "Peace, my son." Teuchi said most gently, his voice was like a gentle breeze in the hills of Tengoku when dawn peeked in the horizon. A voice that cooled even the heart of demons and tamed the rage of bloodthirsty generals.

The strange man raised his head, his eyes were red and soaked. Tears crept down his cheeks. He dragged his feet, holding his hands together like a man praying to Teuchi and said, “My Lord, the land will be swallowed by steel, iron, and fire! Demons shall come to burn the men and chain the women." He paused, weeping. Even Teuchi's calming face was not enough to push away the awful thoughts embedded within the poor man’s mind. "They will eat the children my lord! And, and.."

Teuchi stood before the man could finish. He pressed his hands together, the beads wrapped around his wrist clacked and all of a sudden, the strange man's lips were shut, his eyes stared blankly at the ground like his soul was removed.

The fear, the pain, the desperation that were all so clear moments ago, gone. Teuchi's attendants hurried to the strange man's side walking him away from the grand monk who stared at the darkening sky overshadowing the mountain’s peak.
