Hello all,

I go by Kidzait on this site. I have been running DnD 5e games for a few years now and I really enjoy it. I have joined about a dozen ttrpg’s on RPN over the past few years but only about really got to play in two. I really enjoyed it and I am hoping to run a simple, semi-short dungeon crawl campaign I have had kicking around in my head for about six months.

This will use all DnD 5e material and take place in Faerûn (unearthed arcana is generally fine if you check first). I only plan to have about 4 or 5 characters in this campaign and one character per player. I do not plan on having a posting schedule since (from my experience) a schedule just grinds the pace of the story to a crawl. This also means if it has been 3 or 4 days without a reply, I’ll move on. If you have something come up and you start falling behind, let me know and we will work something out that does not involve stopping the game. If you lose interest please just tell me. It won’t hurt my feelings I promise. Just like playing a ttrpg in person, it is unfair to stop the game for one person’s schedule. There will be a “session zero” where we can do some character planning and introductions. Characters will start at lvl 5

Hook:
On the coast of Lance Lake, A small town named Mythwater has been experiencing some anomalous magical activity centered on a set of ruins. Reports state there is a temple in Mythwater that has partially collapsed recently to reveal some kind of underground passage. No one has ventured inside, citing feelings of unease and hearing strange sounds echoing from below. Attempts to drop light sources into the pit to measure the depth have not given consistent results.
The citizens have been complaining of disruptive nightmares and visions. Tensions between those affected are beginning to rise and this seems to pose an excellent opportunity to study and document ruins constructed by a previously undiscovered civilization and the effects it may be generating.

Your characters will be some way or another associated with the College of the Expanding Horizon and are interested in the expedition.

A few questions:
1. What kind of post length are you expecting, as a baseline?
2. When do you expect to begin the RP, assuming you get players within a reasonable time frame?
3. Where do you play to host the OOC and the IC?
4. 3 or 4 days doesn't seem realistic for me. Not because it's impossible, but I don't like make promises I'm not sure I can keep. I presume given the stance you described that an expansion of the time to reply isn't on the table, but would a character designed with the possibility of more frequently missing the deadline in mind (in other words, have built-in reasons to be inactive or some manner of automated action you as a DM could easily have them do) be acceptable, or would you prefer to just avoid the hassle entirely. (and I want to make it clear, choosing the later doesn't make anyone an ass, knowing what's within the acceptable borders for one's own game/RP is simply a part of a GM's duty of course)
5. If a player wishes to join, do they send the application here, by PM, or will there be a dedicated thread for it?
6. Must the application contain the fully filled out character sheet right away? If so, can you give us more information regarding the logistical side of the character sheet, such as starting level, whether we are to / can roll for gold or should take starting equipment instead, how the stats will be handled (if rolling what rules for the rolling, if not what kind of stat generation are we to use), any benefits or restrictions we should keep in mind, whether mechanically or by lore.
7. I am not familiar with this College of Expanding Horizon. What can you tell me about it?

1. i don't have a post length per se. I am on the side of "reading the room" so to speak. Lets say a paragraph. We all write for fun after all.

2. I don't have a timeline on starting but withen a day or two after the majority is ready.

3. Both the OOC and the IC will be in the dice section of RPN.

4. On average, are you good for 3 to 4 days? If so, cool. I have just run into a lot of people that will fall behind and then (I guess out of shame) will never post again. Like I mentioned, if there is something that comes up (I work in live theater so I understand getting randomly very busy) just tell me and it will be ok. If it's radio silence? I'll move on.
YES! Honestly, that is exactly what I want as a DM, If you have a creative way to become a balloon on a string I'm down to hear it. I usually run missing players as there character being present but the party more or less ignores them.

5. It's up to you where you submit it. If you want private feedback or to keep something secret then DM me

6. That's a good point. Yes, Fill out the short player app first and your character can come after. The player comes before the character after all.
Sorry I missed all of that before. I edited it above on my break at work since I wanted this to be a more thoughtful reply than what I was willing to type on my phone.

Starting lvl 5
Multiclassing is allowed
Standard array or point buy for stats (Players choice but let me know what you pick)
Roll or standard for HP (once you pick you can't change it. Ex: if you pick to roll at lvl one, all hp will be rolled in the future.) If you choose to roll; Reroll 1's
Starting equipment and roll on the starting gold table for your class (If multi classing, pick the highest between your two)

7.That's kinda a good thing considering I made it up. It is loosely based on the Unseen University in the Discworld novels. I have a basic description written but I kept it vague for a reason. Since the university is massive, I want the players to shape their section of the university to fit their character. If you want to be a marine biologist or hot air specialist, do it. Just don't forget to come up with a reson to want to go to Mythwater.

I might be interested in joining in this shindig. Might try my hand at a Rogue. Haven't played that class in a long time.

Hmmm... Not the most encouraging answer, but alright. Since this is meant to be relatively shorter-term, I could try to experiment.

I can't be certain. I can be certain there will be times when I can't commit to such a post, and it's a lot faster than what I'm normally used to. I think it might be worth applying, unless you end up getting a ton of other interest (which to be fair, is rather possible).

Alright. Taking your answers into account, for now I'll state a tentative interest and I will PM you a provisory application.

Any starting goodies since we are starting out at 5th level? Extra gold, or some special gear?

Well we can talk about magic items. Unless you would prefer gold?

I could also be a good DM and ask what it is you are interested in?

I'm hoping the shorter term game encourages experimentation in everyone.

I like longer form posts. Shorter posts tend to feel empty to me like reading a shopping list. Though rather than my own preferences it's the wishy-washy "depends" response to a question about the baseline that felt a bit discouraging.

Well, either way would work. I'd mostly like some magic leather armor to keep me alive and maybe a magic rapier to the cool sword stuff.

I didn't realize my answer was discouraging.
I guess my opinion on the matter is; if you want to write long posts for the writing for fun website, I will read it and I encourage it.
If you find yourself in a situation that calls for a shorter post, I wouldn't penalize for it.
Write however long you want.

No need to worry, you didn’t do anything wrong. I’m just picky, I guess would be one way to summarize it haha.

What kind of player are you?: I’m more a roleplayer than a roll player. I love delving deep into a characters backstory and getting deep into character. Combat usually takes a second place to flavor for me
What do you like to see in games?: good party synergy, an interesting plot to follow or setting to play in
What do you not like to see in games?: Manufactured conflicts, zero ways to resolve conflicts without fighting between players and NPCS
any homebrew you like?: Anything from PointyHat

Character sheet: lvl 5(I like World Anvil but anything works)

Hi there! I am a long time gamer, having been a member of the site for ten years.
I am a (at least I like to think so) good role player, having fun with interpersonal interactions along with the fun of a good combat.
It is always a good thing when the players are getting along well, even if there is some character friction at a safe and fun level. Having a rivalry or disagreement between characters can be a fun thing if everyone is cool with it.
I don't like being railroaded; give me some options on what I can do.
I hesitate to use homebrew stuff because it is so hard to keep things balanced and fair.

I was wondering if a Warforged Fighter would fit in here?

Hey Psychie,
Good to see you! I've seen you around (I think your Ruins 3e game is the most successful campaign I've ever seen on RPN).
Well with those answers, It seems to me like you would fit right in. I understand you concern about homebrew but as far as I can tell we don't have any powergamers so far. I (hope) no one would want to take advantage of a homebrew here.

Totally, Warforged can be tricky to dm though. Do you run with or without magical advantage? I think advantage on magic saves has been removed from most (or all) races with OneDnD? Other than that, I have no problems with a warforged.

As far as classes I was thinking of taking its Wizard(school undecided) or Barbarian(With this subclass Pointy Hat: Path of Spirits - Barbarian Subclass or path of wild magic)
Hey Ebon. Long time no see.
I read over the barb sub class and it seems on the up and up. It reminds me of another subclass that I can't place right now.

So I’m good to make a sheet?

The version I was looking at doesn't have any kind if magical advantage. If it is any way a problem, another race would be just fine. I'm only interested in gaming with everyone here.

All for me! I always wanted to play dnd as a kid lol, but never learned the rules
