Welcome to the Duchy of Irvine. Irvine is set in the southern reaches of California. English and Spanish are both dead languages much as Latin is today, but the name of the land has survived. A catastrophe destroyed civilization as we knew it. Today we look back on the Ancients with dismay. It is said the Ancients saw themselves as gods and the Gods gave them a serious smackdown. In a nutshell it is a rehashing of the old Atlantis story, with new players.
Gone are the monotheistic religions. In their place whole new religions have arisen. The people might not realize it, but their new gods have their origins in video games, role playing games, the internet.
Technology we are in a feudal age, just barely crawling out of a Dark Age.
Magic is a matter of superstition, a little herbalism, sleight of hand, trickery. REAL MAGIC is all but unknown. Oh, there are those who claim it is real. But most of those who make such claims are fools. The only REAL magic that is certain is clerical magic - the power of religion. And it only takes place in holy places - in temples and such.
Irvine is surrounded by other duchies, baronies, and such. But there are NO kings. The land is divided. Not so long ago there were nothing but despotic barons. That isn’t to say the Dukes are much better. In truth, they are just barons who consolidated their power over multiple towns.
To the East is the great Mojave, a wasteland that no one sane would cross. Dwelling there are nomadic range guides and mutants. To the south, beyond the Duchy of Diego lie the kingdoms of Baja and Sonora. Both kingdoms are considered evil in every sense of the word, rumored to draw power from black magic.

Characters
You may play the parts of the offspring of the Chivalric class, but no nobles or royalty. Know your place knave! Of course, lesser classes are equally possible. And you can even come from the criminal element. Just don’t go announcing the fact or get your face known. The Sheriff of Irvine is a harsh man, but just. The Duke is worse.
When death is the penalty for a crime, you should know that the typical punishment is fire if the man was not without penance. The people worship a fire goddess, among others. (There is also a Bear cult and a couple others.)
Plot
There are two possible plots. War is coming to California. That will happen regardless. However, the group may also elect to go exploring. Not an easy task. I am also open to other ideas.
This MUST be done as a group. So if some of you make knights sworn to service while others make adventurers who want to explore, it may take some doing to create a group. You will all need to discuss it.
Posting
I am looking for literate writers, characters with some depth. I want interaction between characters. Romance is fine, but don’t let it distract from the plot. Posts should be made in 3rd person, past tense, decent spelling and grammar.
