    Dark Lords of Araen

Name: Every Lord needs an intimidating name and title. Think Caedros, the Night Sovereign.

Gender: This doesn’t necessarily apply to a spirit of pure thought and energy, but feel free to include it.

Personality and Motivation: You’re probably not good, but why do you think you need the World? Are you a brute, or a cunning seducer? Perhaps you love a good fight, or enjoy a well-executed plan. Maybe you want to guide the mortals, or just want to crush them beneath your boots.

Appearance: Pretty much anything goes. Something to inspire awe and dread in your mortal servants, or to throw your enemies off guard. Between the size of a large cat, and a forty foot tall humanoid in mass.

    Powers

Select one Focus out of the three. Pick four from your Focus, and two total powers from the other two sections.

    MIGHT

Formidable: You take little damage from even the most powerful weapons, and you tower above the battlefield. You’re also in good shape for a world-dominating madman.

Intimidating: You are truly fearsome. Most foes would tremble to face you, and only the bravest can approach without soiling themselves.

Arcane Armor: This excellent suit of armor shields you from most magic, and dampens the most powerful. Light and durable.

Weapons Expert: You are well-versed in the poetry of weapons. You can preform amazing feats of weapon use, like shooting arrows with perfect accuracy and wielding the most exotic weapons with skill.

Powerhouse: What need for skill do you have when you can hurl boulders, pulverize foes with a blow, and scatter armies with raw might?

    CONJURATION

Necromancy: You can raise the dead to fight at your command. There’s an upper limit on how many you can control, and spirits you summon can deceive you with faulty advice. The walking corpses of your legions are susceptible to fire.

Fiendbinder: You can summon the demons of the Hells. Some will serve you, others seek to destroy you, and others try to escape. Be ever wary of their treasonous nature, and don’t bite off more than you can chew.

The Beyonder: You have discovered how to draw the mad Demiurges of the Formless Void to your aid. They require food while here, and seek to devour all they can find... including you, if the opportunity arises. Fortunately they won’t stay forever, and will leave in a few hours or days.

Golemry: You know the secret to the creation of golems, loyal automation. Starting with primitive clay fighters, you can advance these soldiers into unstoppable steel legions.

Monster Breeding: You breed monsters of all shades from orcs, ogres and trolls, to werewolves, vampires and dragons. They are loyal, and terrifying.

    SORCERY

Shadowbinding: This allows you to manipulate the darkness. From transportation through the Shadow Realm, to shades that hunt prey, you rule the night. The more complicated the creation the shorter it lasts, with nearly thinking shadows lasting mere hours or days.

Blood Magic: Make the blood of your foes boil, break them to your will, or just kill them. The possibilities are limitless, and you can use this power to heal others or drain their life to fuel your own.

Telekinesis: The manipulation of the physical world. With practice, you can rip and break your enemies, and hurl boulders with your will alone. It can also be used for delicate operations.

Ruination: The raw, destructive power of an enraged Demiurge. They can include elemental might or negative energy attacks. Whatever form it takes, destruction is yours to control.

Illusion: An underestimated power. Psychological warfare, torment, deception and more are the bread and butter of this power.

    General Powers

    Pick four from the following.

Telepathy: You have the ability to read mortal minds, and can attempt to break them to your will. Only works on a limited number, and strong-willed individuals can resist.

Glamor: You are more beautiful than the fairest Elf, and your voice is ethereally enthralling. Even if you describe your plans to unleash a demon scourge upon their family, the weak-willed can only marvel at your cunning and grace.

Shapeshifter: You can take on any form, between the size of a large cat to a forty-foot tall humanoid. You will be bound by the limits of the form you pick, and you cannot cast spells when in a form other than your default. You can speak in any form, though.

Lore Master: You have seen much, heard much, and many ancient secrets are known to you. You likely have a massive library, and have an encyclopedic knowledge of your books and scrolls.

Curse: You can curse a limited amount of items or bloodlines. The cursed object will slowly turn the bearer to your side, and sabotage the works of your foes. A cursed bloodline will suffer tragedy and misery, and gradually fall into madness and death.

Teleport: You can teleport to any location you can see. Repeatedly using this power will drain you. This is limited to yourself and objects on your person. Look before you leap.

Leadership: You have supernatural will and control over your servants. In battle, they will not rout until you fall.

    Unique Power

    Pick one of the following.

Mirror, Mirror: A nigh-omniscient mirror. Once a day, it will answer a single question. It will be accurate, and the mirror won’t lie, but it’s words can be twisted. There are some things it doesn’t know, and it often makes an educated guess.

Weapon of Rapture: A weapon imbued with the spark of a Demiurge, the raw power of creation in your hand. It can split the sea, grind mountains to dust, and eradicate cities. Be careful, though, it can easily go farther than you wanted, and it has a will of its own (and it hates you). Describe what form it takes. Beware, Angels and Demons will try to steal it.

Eternal: You are bound to the world. No matter how badly you are wounded, you will come back. Even if it takes centuries, you will crawl out of the woodwork to plague the World.

All-Seeing Orb: A sphere of crystal that shows you anything in the World. It allows you to telepathically communicate with anyone you see in it. If you have the Teleport power, you can go anywhere you see in it.

Phylactery: A relic that magnifies your power. As long as it exists and you possess it, you are strengthened. If it is destroyed, you are drastically weakened. Describe what form it takes.

Soul Gem: A mysterious spirit in a gem. It cannot do anything more than speak. It is knowledgeable, but its knowledge of recent history is nonexistent. Covering it stifles its telepathic speech. Quite sensible, and doesn’t complain. The gem is unbreakable, and the spirit cannot be released.

    Armies:
    Pick one.

    The Damned: Requires Necromancy

The dead rise at your word, enemy, friend and animal alike. You have no upper limit on your legion’s numbers. The Free People will tremble before the might of the grave.

Corrupted Mortals: Elves, Men and Dwarves all have failings. Some desire wealth, or power. Whatever the reason, they have joined you and betrayed their people.

Monstrous Legions: An army of twisted mortals and beasts, vicious and loyal. Orcs, trolls, and other fiendish nightmares fill your armies.

    Greater Beasts:

    Pick one.

Kraken: A beast of the watery depths, the Kraken strikes from below. It can cut off shipping, and devastate ports. Although primarily aquatic, it can swim upriver and briefly go ashore at night or in heavy rain. It’s ability to flee into the deep makes it hard to find.

Giant: A cunning, monstrously huge individual of its kind. It is a loyal servant, and can lead armies in battle.

Mother Spider: A huge arachnid, this intelligent monster can web up miles of territory. Although an independent power, she will breed more spiders for you if you have the Monster Breeding ability.

Werewolf: A gigantic wolf. It is intelligent, and its bite and claws can infect humans with lycanthropy. It loves fresh meat.

Vampire: This humanoid is seductive and powerful. In daylight, it will catch fire. It is strongest at night. The vampires it creates can turn into a swarm of bats. The original can become a single monstrous bat.

Dragon: A nightmarish giant of its kind, this titan of death can raze a city and melt an army. This horror is mobile and well-armored, but willful and stubborn. Beware letting it see shiny treasure.

    Court:

    Create up to 8 servants

Each servant should have one or two sentences describing their powers and purpose. Think battlefield commanders, champions, envoys, and traitorous nobles amongst the Free Peoples. Try to give them a character. This can include captured Angels or Demons, and mortal hostages.

    Council:

Create up to five councilors. Each should be a distinct character, and fill a weakness or shortcoming of yours.

    Flaw:

    Pick one.

Fractured: You are... split. Sometimes you find yourself doing something else, only to be told you’ve been doing it for days. Your powers sometimes sputter at an inopportune moment. It’s almost as if you’ve forgotten something, some injury or curse...

Corruption: Your powers are waning... fast. You are still fearsome, still thinking clearly, but you are falling apart. You need to find something to arrest the decline, staunch the bleeding, before you’re formless and wasted.

Treason: One of your advisors or court is plotting a coup. They’re protected by powerful magic, and all your attempts to find out are stymied. It seems you’ll only find out when you are at your weakest...

Infamous: The Free People know who and what you are. Their combined efforts are against you, and a specific order has likely been created to monitor and counter you.

Wrath of the Un/Holy: The gods themselves (choose Unholy or Holy) have determined you a major threat. They won’t directly attack, but they’ll point Paladin legions/Demon cults in your direction and sabotage your efforts.

Nature’s Revenge: The earth reels beneath you. The spirits of trees and animals, the guardians of life, are rising. Every forest and ocean desires your fall. Beware the trees.

    They come in the dark.
