Oh, dear. I've created a monster!

Heh! =)

Oh, this monster has always been around. =) If you will allow me to quote Admiral Yamamoto (of World War II fame) referring to America after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It is rumored he said: "I fear all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with terrible resolve."

I've been wanting to write up a Western fencing system for some time now (in fact, I have received a few good tips from an RP Nation RPer who practiced fencing). This, I think, is simply the best time to do it. =)

Thanks for the vote of support, Purr Purr ! I appreciate it. We'll just have to see what the future holds for Terra.
Sure! If you want to know what I learned in playing my Undead Slayer, you know where to find me. =)

And it is this kind of fencing that I shall base it around. The kind Christopher Lee, Basil Rathbone, and Jose Ferrer can be seen by... and adored once again. =)

I am interested in seeing what you can come up with for western style swordplay/fencing. If it looks good, do you mind if I adopt it as an available MA in my future games?

Ha ha! Psychie Psychie You honor me and my role playing skills! Thank you!

As long as I am given credit in the same fashion you have provided in your Southern Cross game with Jeet Kune Do 2.0, you have my blessing. =)

The Internet! It makes doing research so much fun!

Who says research isn't fun? =)

"3 Common Mistakes in Rapier Fighting"
The moment around mark 2:35 is both humorous and a very good lesson from a Gold medal-winning Olympic fencer, Ms. Nicole Smith! =)

I meant to get a short post up these last few days, but was busy with other stuff. I'll put something out there later today if time permits.

Edit: Also - I meant to take care of the level-up first, but didn't have the time to put too much thought into it yet.

Sherwood Sherwood I don't mind moving ahead before I get this research done, but I'm also up in the air as to what else we could be doing. I mean, we have an elf with us, we're in unfamiliar territory, so... what other options do we have available to us?

At this stage, I've even forgotten if we have a way into this Lone Star complex. I guess I'll have Snowfall ask about that?

Alrighty, folks - bad days were followed by positively busy days, so I got nowhere yet. Will get stuff done once I'm able to!

Still, research can be fabulous! No, really! =)

(I know I'm doing a lot of things at once in our RP games, but most of it is great fun!) =)

"Learn Rapier 8 - The Fabulous Cape" (Martin Fabian)

Heya!

I have come to a shift of opinion when it comes to Hand to Hand: Western Fencing and I think it's a pretty cool one. At first, I thought I wanted to create a rapier-based hand to hand system, but the more research I did into it, the more I began to realize, "Why a rapier-based when I could get the whole European kit and kaboodle (and what's a kaboodle anyway? It must have meant something sometime)?"

My goal here is to create an alternative to Zanji Shinjinken Ryu for Cyber-Knights and well... everybody! So... I've decided to change it up to Hand to Hand: HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts)! Not only are their videos fun, but at least in the Blood & Iron school, they cover several centuries of popular weapons, rapier included. Oh, and longsword, side-sword, sabers, and all kinds of other goodies all wrapped up into one single system! =)

Here's one of their short and good videos. =)

"What is HEMA?"

So... there it is! That's where deep research can get you - a deeper look that takes you from what you think you want... into what you really want!

I have a feeling that Psychie Psychie is going to like HEMA Instructor and Champion "...I much prefer to do the stabbing!" Nicole Smith! =)

"Rapier Champion Teaches how to Disengage & Stab!"

Sherwood Sherwood Psychie said that she liked the HEMA system but I don't think I got your take. Is this something you want us to have in your game?

If so, I can certainly see Eron and Snowfall having an interest in it. I don't know about Terra.

Also, you mentioned earlier that you wanted martial art systems to cost either three or four Skills. I might do the same in Robotech: Broadsword but I have to think about it. The Attribute bonuses and effect on game balance there make me hesitant.

But here in Rifts, what's your take?

Sorry; I thought I had already replied. Too many games.

I like the write-up. It has some good stuff to it, but I'm always horrible when dealing with custom stuff, trying to balance giving the character enough to make the custom item good, but not giving away the bank. I will allow this here for the low, low price of just 19.99! Or three skills, whichever one you prefer. lol

Heh! Dear Sherwood, if ever there's one element in you that has never changed and I hope you never lose, it is your fantastic sense of humor!

Sorry; I thought I had already replied.
Maybe you did in another of our games and I missed it. It's been that kind of week for me. =)

Too many games.
I can come close to relating to this! I am definitely at my limit for games. I have just enough to keep me busy on a regular basis and I am sincerely enjoying all five (Sharseya, Broadsword, Your Rifts, Psychie's Robotech, and Jay's Avatar: The Last Airbender).

I would be caught up with all of them if it wasn't for Real Life circumstances some of which include COVID among some buddies of mine and in my workplace (oh, to work from home!).

While I sometimes fear I come across as a rules lawyer or stingy DM (which is probably just an illusion because you guys have never complained about it), I think I have a very good grasp on game balance in my own games and sometimes in others.

As long as I understand the rules and campaign well, I can often tell where things are going right and wrong even if the GM across the table from me doesn't see it.

I've been known to raise questions ("Hey friend, it's your game, but are you sure you want to allow that?") in games to the benefit of everyone. I think it has to do with my ADHD and my having a strong interest in the details of subjects that keep my attention, like gaming, martial arts, firearms, and things like that.

Don't get me wrong. There are times I will throw something into a game just to see if it floats and if it doesn't, I alter it or take it out (the Super Stealth Logan prototype is a good example).

Sometimes the only way to know is to experiment. So I experiment! =)

Sherwood Sherwood Psychie Psychie

Which reminds me. I haven't gotten around to how I do experience points and levels between characters with multiple martial arts in Broadsword, have I?

Are either of you interested in that?

I was under the impression that the new MA style would start out at a level 1 bonus, and go up accordingly, just like any other skill. That is what I am doing with Mario with his two different MAs, and unless we continue past level fifteen, his Thai Kick Boxing will not max itself out.

Yeah. Let me take this to Robotech: Broadsword so that the other players (Kaerri and Cap'n) can read that and chime in if they wish to. This should be fun. =)

Roll for me, please!
