Set in a Star Trek like future. However, if we followed the TV series too closely some dates and events would have to change as the Eugenics Wars happened in the 1990’s and World War III in 2026. We would need to delay the timeline about 70 years - the wars taking place around 2055-65 and 2095-2103. It would delay the first warp drive test to the early 22nd century about a decade after the end of WW III.
Exactly how far forward is up for discussion we begin is up to you. Bear in mind that I haven’t followed ALL the Star Trek histories. I missed most of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT, plus missed SSN3 of Discovery. So I am missing large chunks of the fandom. Personally I would suggest using the ST:TNG setting. More mature than the original series. Better suited to the presence of a “civilian” and the role of exploration. After the initial scenes, a move to a DS9 setting might work.
Still, I love the Federation as a concept. That said, the RP will begin aboard a Federation exploration vessel when a derelict starship is discovered. The ship’s hull has characteristics of a Pre-Warp era Earth vessel, but has a hull of an previously unknown composition. Initially scans will be unable to determine anything about the ship’s composition or contents. Later, once boarded, scans indicate that it is composed of magnetic plating similar to the battleplating of the Archer era Enterprise, layered with a swarm nanotechnology and some sort of quantum entangled energy dampening matrix. It is much larger than the Phoenix (the first human warp vessel in canon Star Trek history). However, the vessel is discovered near the edge of the galaxy, further than any vessel of that time could have ever achieved, but on a course for Earth at sublight speeds.
Scans are unable to penetrate the hull of the vessel initially because the ship is enveloped by a temporal distortion field. Time inside the vessel is passing at an infinitesmal fraction of the time passing outside. In other words, the occupant has barely aged.
The ship is discovered to be occupied by a single occupant, a human male. There is paraphernalia discovered in his living quarters from the early 21st century, suggesting that he may have been adrift since before warp drive was even discovered. He is a mystery indeed.

You are an officer on board the Federation ship. Security, Historical Specialist, Engineer … pick your role aboard the ship. I do recommend something that would give an excuse for contact.
