If she knew anything about escape rooms it was that you should check every corner even if it was super obvious. "Let's see what we have here..."Rei sighed, reaching for the pillow. She looked under it to see what she could find.

[ Bishal Jha ]

Bishal paled at the dark information the voice casually released and looked down at the burner. His brain blanked out until he realized his proximity to the weapon of mass destruction in front of him. After that, the only thought in his head was the need to get away from the tool of torment as he jumped up and scrambled away.

He paused at a far enough spot and squinted fiercely at it, wondering when it would come alive again, up to the point where his new buddy mentioned games and bad ends. Scooting backwards with his sight still on the burner, he hesitated and finally turned once he was closer to the other person by the bed. His eyes darted around the room, too afraid to look head-on at the other’s expression, and he nervously wondered if his new maybe-not friend regretted freeing an idiot like him. “I’m sorry. I won’t touch it again, promise.”

As he moved his line of sight back for a peek, his pending buddy asked him to look underneath the bed frame. Bishal gaped. Was he maybe, possibly, perhaps being forgiven for his dumb mistake? The corners of his mouth twitched upwards, and he happily did as requested. “Yes, sir, will do!”

The leather bag under the bed appeared cartoonish compared to the much more ornate chamber it inhabited. It was almost cute. Bishal shuddered at the thought. When a person locked in a soon-to-be aflame room had the notion that a conceivable device of doom in it was cute, something had probably gone wrong. Reaching for the bag and pulling it out, he patted any pockets and checked any openings for batteries or more intricate indications of the item in question.

Sewed up. Completely. Zero Openings. Time to slice some shit up. He figured nothing besides the makeup had been useless so far. He went back to the draw he’d stashed the mirror shards in and opened it back up ruffling through to find the most blade like one.

    “Hey Whitey. Gotcha a present.”

He handed one of the mirror shards to the other male before he went back to the burner that seemed to cause them to lose time in their escape. He’d seen a flame come out from the corner of his eye when one was pressed and the other was death. He shook the burner a bit, maybe something was in it?

Nah. But he could try melting something. He wondered if there was anything to use as a container in here. He went and grabbed anything he could conceivably burn and started piling it on the bed. Considering most was just make up it made the job easier. Still he kinda needed to figure out what to do with it.

“Hey which button turned on the fire on this thing?”

[ Bishal Jha ]

Bishal watched apprehensively as New Buddy handed him a very, very sharp piece of glass that he would not trust himself to, under any circumstances, hold. Gripping the piece gingerly with his thumb and forefinger and hoping it wouldn’t drop-stab his big toe, he pulled an only slightly hysterical smile onto his face and said, “Thank you.”

Being polite was always the right choice, even if one didn’t at all mean it and would rather just “no, thank you” it out of the room. He looked at the bag sitting innocently in front of him and shuddered in sympathy. Sawing at the largest sewn-shut opening of the bag, he settled down for a lengthy fight at snail’s pace with the thick cloth.

When New Buddy questioned him about the burner, Bishal turned to look at him incredulously. “Are you serious?” He paused and reconsidered his words; they were a little rude. “I mean, are you sure? It’s the blue one, but uh, be careful. Don’t die?” He winced at that. It was a little too direct. He changed the topic. “The yellow one is the one that sends fuel, so you probably shouldn’t touch that.”

Was he sure? Nope, not a bit. But doing nothing wasn’t gonna reveal just what they were supposed to do with it. He could theoretically test it with the makeup but if he did what would he collect it in? There was unlikely to be anything in the palates which meant that he should find a bowl or such. But then again he could have just been missing what he needed to use the burner.

    "Maybe not..."

Instead of rushing into it he moved the burner to the bed and turned back to look through the nightstand it previously occupied. He tugged at the nightstand and found it was also locked. You could almost see the line of thought pass through his head as the boy dug his hand into his pockets. He still had the key from earlier. He tried the lock attempting to open it with the small key.

With a huff of frustration, he found that it was getting him nowhere. Their lovely host seemed to color code the room. He supposed it would be easy so long as they both were not colorblind. Still, he was tired of this game and they didn’t exactly have long left. He grabbed the hammer and brought it back attempting to smash open the nightstand.

[ Bishal Jha ]

Poking his hand inside the bag after he had cut open the largest pocket, Bishal felt around for a smooth, cylindrical object. His face lit up with the beginnings of a beam as he touched the item in question, but as he pulled out a simple stick of wax, his expression fell. A stick of wax wasn’t the batteries he needed. It seemed like there was still a lot to go through before they could stop their approaching demise.

He tried to cheer himself up; maybe this discovery would be the vital piece to unlock the batteries that would save them. Holding the stick carefully between fingers, trying his darnest not to melt it with the heat of his palms, he scampered over to his partner.

“Hey! I found a stick of wax!” he said, then paused. Hearing it in speech, the uncovering of a stick of wax didn’t sound like a particularly great find. Or at all a great find. Or even a good find. Bishal furrowed his brows and shook it off; perhaps New Buddy would realize its importance.

He hesitated and turned to the burner. Maybe the wax was supposed to be melted. Before his resolve to never touch the burner again could crumble, he looked away. There was the possibility that the wax was used elsewhere, and he had promised. He always kept his promises.

Hmm, simple," she slapped a fist to her palm, "Aha! I've got it!" She waved to her partner, gesturing for her to come. "I think we should check the drawer and safe, see?" Yule instead hurriedly stepped over to the woman and read the pager aloud again. "The note says 'what is essential is invisible to the eye', and we don't know the safe code. Maybe if we shine that black light on the safe it'll show the combination."

To Yule, puzzles came easily after some reasoning and attention but she was as smart as she was forgetful and again had to knock her brain into remembering this wasn't a just for fun puzzle. "Let's hurry," she shuttered, dulling down as she gave herself a tight squeeze.

Although nothing seemed to appear under the black light when shined on the rolling table, the safe, or the chair seat, while Reese was shining it along the length of the length of the table she had been strapped to some numbers became visible under the beam when it flashed over a certain part of the table. Located in the center width-wise and a little above the center length-wise, the numbers seemed to be at the area where Reese's chest was when she was strapped down. When the spot was held under the black lights the numbers that became visible read "0319."

Annoying. This hammer was garbage. He couldn’t tear up the thing. Heck it probably would outlast the fire. He was still coming up with a plan E when he heard his partner shout out his new discovery. He looked from the corner of his eye as he saw Bishal treating the wax like glass. He turned his head watching the boy scurry over. With a tilt of his head he connected the dots. Wax, fire, hmm. He grabbed the burner and turned on the flame holding it steady.

    “Whitey, BURN THE BITCH!”

Sure he didn't much know what it was going to accomplish but then again just what had anything else done? So far he'd only managed to unlock his partner and get some lipstick. He was seriously wondering just what was the use in putting them in this. If they were searching for brilliance they seemed to run out of options if they were left with Santiago and Bishal as their hopes.

"Burn burn and stop the fires!"

[ Bishal Jha ]

Bishal’s eyes widened at his partner’s enthusiastic yelling. Burn it? Surely, the one person stuck with him in a burning room didn’t mean what he thought he meant? As New Buddy continued expressing his support for burning things to stop the burning, he realized that yes, the words indeed meant what he thought they meant.

There was only a mildly desolate expression on his face as he slowly drew out his possible last words. “If you’re sure.”

He wasn’t breaking his promise even with all that he was going to do; Bishal really wasn’t planning on touching the burner, simply using the heat to melt the wax. Cautiously pinching the wax stick hanging over hot flame, he stood at the furthest distance he could manage while still holding the item in question in the place it should be, feet spread apart and head tilted away from that monstrosity of a machine.

As the stick of wax was held above the open flame it looked as if it was sweating as it started to melt. Eventually as more and more wax dripped away the core of the stick seemed to take on the shape of a skeleton key. Once more of the wax melted away the iron it was encasing looked to be the same color as the metal the keyhole on the drawer was surrounded by.

Claireese Stonewright

Claireese.jpgClaireese was almost disheartened by the first few objects, and had a mind to maybe even flash Yule with the light. Though, it seemed very weird to Claireese for anything to be written on their own bodies. The thought creeped her out and made her skin crawl.

Flashing a look over at her partner, she thought about it, "I wouldn't have thought to actually scan the items that are locked. One sec." Just as she was finishing her pass of the table she was on, she noticed a quick flash of something that wasn't there otherwise.

"What."

Holding the light at the spot, she read the numbers there, "0319?"

She glanced over to the other girl, "I don't remember if the drawer or safe used numbers. Is there a pin code anywhere on those, or a spinny dial?" She sat the black light on the table, leaving it on and shining on the numbers as she approached the other girl.

Break You || Santiago’s CS File

He felt a deep giggle break out as the wax slowly melted away to reveal a key within. It was even worth the dodging of hot wax drippings. The key itself was obviously to the drawers in the nightstand. Luckily they still had a bit of time on their clock and with any luck this would hold the batteries they needed since he couldn’t damn well see anywhere else they could hide things. But then again knowing how the day had been going they might need to start making more creative solutions with the items at their disposal.

“Looks like we hit the jackpot here. At least if we get batteries, but if we don’t we kinda wasted a bunch of time so I’ma get organizing. Let me know what’s in the drawer.”

Either way he dumped all the items out of his apron and arranged them on the bed. He put the hammer and burner together having both been proper tools. The key they’d already used went with the miscellaneous makeup products they collected. The glass and empty bag were placed at the end with other hazard-like things. Heck he even piled some of the excess wax with it. Just in case. After all some things just weren’t expected after all. He went to place the flashlight with the burner before having a moment.

"WAIT DID WE EVEN CHECK THE FLASHLIGHT?"

He fumbled with the batteries in the flashlight trying to remove them to see if he could stuff them in the missing slots for the fire alarm.

[ Bishal Jha ]

As the very plain, very basic stick of wax revealed a key of utmost momentousness, his mouth stretched into a beaming smile. They hadn’t tried it in any keyholes yet, but he was sure it related to the singular locked place in the room: the nightstand. Well, maybe there were other places, but he didn’t know them, so he really couldn’t know if they were connected at the moment, could he?

“Sure!” he called out, already speed walking — the floor was always liable to be tripped on — to the nightstand. His heart palpitated at a brisk, nervous tempo as he pushed the skeleton key at the similarly coloured keyhole in the drawer. It got stuck before it even entered. He wrinkled his brows, puzzled. Then he realized he had shoved it in from the wrong angle, and wiped cold — or maybe hot; the room was getting scarily toasty — sweat from his forehead.

A screech from New Buddy broke his concentration, and he jumped. “What?” He parsed the words his partner had said. “Er, no? At least, I don’t remember doing something like that.” He paused and thought about the quality of his memory. “Maybe take that with a grain of salt."

Sadly, despite Santiago's best efforts the flashlight did not come apart. Upon further inspection it seemed as if the chassis had been welded shut.

Upon opening and locking inside the drawer though, a pair of batteries became visible to Bishal. All that was left was to insert them into the fire alarm, though with the height of the ceiling it seemed impossible for the average person to reach.

[ Bishal Jha ]

Click.

The drawer unlocked, and Bishal slid it open with his heart in his throat, apprehension and anticipation warring for control. As his eyes lit upon the twin batteries sitting peacefully in the nightstand, they seemed to shine with the gleam of a thousand pixelated treasures hidden away by dungeon bosses of old. He shed a single, lone tear, then quickly wiped it away. He turned to the sole other being in the room and yelled, “I found it! I found the batteries!”

Clutching one in each hand, he lifted them up and waved them a little too enthusiastically in the air, beaming with the force of the sun at midday. Leaping haphazardly to his newest buddy, he opened his fingers, palm up, and showed off his findings. “Look! Batteries!"

save image as.png Rei inspected the pillowcase feeling that it had a strange weight. She raised an eyebrow, feeling around to see if she was correct. "Hey, I think theirs something in here..." Speaking just above a whisper she tugged at the seams to see if she could open it to no avail. "Damn it..." Tossing the pillow to the side she walked over to the toilet looking into the bowl, giving a frustrated sigh.

Figuring there may be something around there to open up the pillow case she began looking around the toilet squeamishly.

Fuck it Up || Santiago’s CS File

Of course the stupid flashlight would be wielded shut. They wanted them to play the game their way and no other. What a hack job. He threw the flashlight into the pile on the bed with a quick sucking of his teeth. He would have gone to yell at the speaker again if he hadn’t heard the gleeful shout of Whitey. Oh batteries! Perfect! He looked up to the smoke detector at the ceiling it would be hard to reach certainly

    “Awesome job. Now…”

He knew the bed was bolted down. The furniture was probably all bolted down. He’d try it if they couldn’t safely get up to it on their own. He jumped as high as he could and still couldn’t get close. Now how would this go? He wondered if Bishal could reach it if he jumped on Santi’s shoulders. Well they’d never know if they didn’t try. He kneeled down with one knee as the other laid flat getting ready.

“Whitey it’s time to get those batteries in. Hope you’re not afraid of heights. Hop on”

[ Bishal Jha ]

Bishal’s smile became ever sunnier as New Buddy complimented his fairly superfluous actions. As he glanced up at the smoke detector, his smile fell a little. While he may have had a school record in high jump, there was still no way to reach the little white disk and properly open it, fit the batteries in and close it in the short period he could possibly brush the ceiling.

Just as he was worried about the height, his partner figured out a way to best their final predicament: a two person tower.

“I’m not afraid of heights,” Bishal said hesitantly, dithering and trying to delay crushing his newest friend’s shoulders. He gingerly took hold of the other’s shoulders and hoped New Buddy wasn’t as flimsy as he appeared. “Sorry about this.”

With that said, he proceeded to awkwardly clamber onto New Buddy’s shoulders. Waving his arms like a chicken trying to fly or a human trying not to drown, he wobbled and shifted to position his feet in a place where he was least likely to fall. Once his flailing had died down to only once every ten seconds versus continuously, he opened his mouth to say, “I think I’m ready.”

When Rei tossed the pillow, it fell as if there was a small weight in it.

As she approached the metallic toilet, nothing seemed terribly out of place, though the handle of the toilet that controls the flushing seemed to be stuck up. The bowl was empty of water, and the back lid of the toilet's tank was sealed with duct tape.
