I wonder if you realized the use of was in this passage. Have you? It's alright if you haven't...Quite alright. Allow me to explain though, will you? This will take us to the very beginning of the academy's origins so stick with me if you please.
Back to a time before Faray was even a mere thought, the world had been severely divided. Education was split by species and race. Homes destroyed by spiteful folk. The families ruined by the cursed gift few were unfortunate enough to have. Life as we know it was divided by factors not a single soul could control. People were hated by their own kind because of the way they were born. For a life, they never asked for. The kind they never agreed to have. And its effect on the poor souls was blatantly ignored by the higher powers. Since they never thought to care for it, the lower classmen didn't either.
Well...Maybe a few.
There was one man who lived under the alias of Nick Everdeen age 35. He was a rather tall adult for his kind standing at an absolutely ginormous!-

4'8ft.
What? He was a dwarf!
Anyways, this man saw the hurt that was ripping at his friends. His family. His people. The world. And he despised it. Nick hated the hateful things that the children of his day were being taught. The hurtful and spiteful thinking that was being forced into their still innocent and wonder-filled heads. Be Nick loathed the whole thing in silence only going on the occasional rant about it all to his family or his friends. They all seemed to agree with him as well after enough of his talks but felt as if it couldn't be changed. The whole world was going currently going to hell and corruption with hate and no one was stepping in to change it. Not even him. Until....
Being a lower-class dwarf, Nick never had much money meaning he couldn't receive a proper education for a good while, and as people his age had given up on trying, Nick was determined to get the knowledge he had the right to hone and learn... And just when he saved up enough and finally was able to apply to a local university, he was quickly rejected. They took his money, led him on for a month on end...Then rejected him. They were claimed to be a place of learning specifically for elves. Apparently, they were held higher than dwarves in the twisted world and didn't want to waste time and space by taking on a simple stupid dwarf.
That was the last straw.
It may be obvious that Nick was seething from it all but he knew there was enough anger and such as there was already. He refused to add to the already raging dumpster fire so he set off to single-handedly create the world he truly wanted. The way he would eventually do so is the eventual concept, idea, then execution of Faray high.
Over the years hundreds upon thousands of creatures of all kinds from all kinds of backgrounds and lives had backed up Nick's project and even served as scouts for him. They went out into the world in secret looking for people who needed a place to be. Who deserved to be there and who could truly grow from attending. Many people fell in love with his idea of diversity and acceptance but even more hated it and did whatever they could to destroy the small hope that Nick had created and more than once, they had gotten dangerously close to succeeding.
Nick of course refused to give up despite his supporters and staff's suggestion to do so and instead decided to keep his school running. He sealed it off from the rest of the world with a special mix of elven and sorceress magics, making the grand academy visible only to those he allowed it to. As years went by the power that came with running the school was passed on from generation to generation until it finally landed into the current headmistress's hands by her mother.
Jumping back to the present day, her sole goal is to show her hand-selected students that life is more than what they've seen. She wants to both inspire and mold her students into individuals the world can be proud of. The kind of people they want to be.
And so, I welcome you all to Faray high's academy for the gifted!!

The day was a nice one with the sun shining high and warm over the land below. Dozens of warlocks of every level and kind were busy outside the grand school setting out paths towards their first destination. Near the homes and current locations of each student, glowing blue mushrooms sprung up from the ground below them and grew into a steady path that was meant to lead them to a fairly sized marble building somehow kept hidden in the middle of the forest. There was a young lady who stood in that place waiting for the new arrivals.
