Dice Rifts Japan - OOC Thread

The source I was using for the Oni had them quite a bit different than what dann has described and the absolute last thing I’d want to do is disrupt any setting concept.
From my point of view, Good-aligned oni really aren't the problem (on the contrary - they're trying to become part of the solution!); I feel it is the people, the citizens of the Republic of Japan that we are working in, that would be the trouble.

I think of watching Ghost in the Shell and immersing myself in that city. The people shopping in the marketplace. On the boats. The running children with their yellow umbrellas. The media on the television screens. Even the brown and white dog.

Now, imagine dropping something out of Big Trouble in Little China (like maybe that shaggy brown-furred devil that serves as Lo Pan's pet?). Drop that thing into Ghost in the Shell and watch the city just panic. Wouldn't you if you were in their shoes?

Even if you were part of the large percentage of Republic people that have cyberware installed on their bodies, what is that going to do against a demon?

Sure, there are a tiny amount of people in the Republic that practice low level magic and psychic abilities. Yes, there is the military with all of their 'borgs, bots, and drones.

But the supernatural stuff? The legends become living? I would think that's mostly the New Empire's territory. And the rest of Japan and China as far as they know.

Sherwood Sherwood Is this how it is in your story? Your Japan? The better we understand your world, the better we make characters that can play like they're living in it, right?

I love that breakdown of why it could be an issue. It puts it into context for the world a bit more, especially with the GitS comparison. This is supposed to be a higher stakes mission and the team would generally want to remain in the background and out of the news cycle. I think I was overestimating the amount of magic users in the general world!

No, there's a lot of magic users in the general world. But the New Republic's percent of magic-users is like 2%? Their population is 97% Japanese demographically I think. They are very different than the rest of Rifts Earth.

Edit: It's also worth noticing that only the police and the military have guns. The average citizen's not allowed to be armed. All the more reason for them to be freaked if they see obviously inhuman anything walking down their streets.

If memory serves, because I don't have my books with me, the percentage of magic-using people in the Republic of Japan number 6% and they range from 1st-3rd level. I feel they are "watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat" amateurs compared to the New Empire or the wizards of the Western world.

Like the Republic, the vast majority of New Empire's peasants/working class are not allowed to carry weapons of any kind lest they be beheaded by samurai. Only their law enforcement and military are allowed to "carry iron" lest the peasants and eta (the poor and class-less) revolt.

I want to try and keep this gave from getting derailed before we even start. No oni with juicer implants. The character has to be able to survive in Hiroshima without causing widespread panic at every turn.

Since you are military, being a full conversion combat chassis borg is fine. Just remember you are hunters of supernatural evil when considering what race and class you wish to play.

Hooray! 8D

Teh Frixz Teh Frixz I will be up for the next few hours if you would like to bounce ideas off of another player. =)

What suits your fancy? A Ghost in the Shell-like police/military/special forces-type character straight out of a Masamune Shirow manga? A Crazy with any number of odd gifts and odd mentalities (hint: no such thing as a sane... Crazy!)? Something else entirely?

What race of creature? While human is clearly the easiest, in the long run, is there a race/class build (okay, actually, make that a "personality") that you've enjoyed playing a great deal in the past that you think might fit well into this Ghost in the Shell/Silent Mobius + magic setting?

How can we help? =)

Edit: I don't mean to speak for anyone else when I say "we" here. Our folks here tend to be very friendly and helpful and I would be surprised if they didn't pitch in if they saw an opportunity. Must be cool people or something! =)

I think this is worth asking again - Are things in your Hiroshima like I described or are they different? Or have you decided? What would you fancy? I'm trying to get a feel of the world you're running here. =)

You have a good feel for the pulse of the city. There are a few immigrants from outside of the Republic, but they are few in number and generally stick to their own small communities in the city. Openly wearing cyberwear is socially acceptable even if full conversion borgs are more rare. But even they are welcomed by the residents of Hiroshima.

Finally found the assasin hand to hand style too bad i can only have 1 style else i would have taken kendo

Also couple of questions.

do i add the plus 4 to the primary skills now or do i need to wait till level to 2 to add it.
Is it possible to upgrade assasination to kendo?
What are some of the other rogue skills not in this rift book

What do you mean, plus four to primary skills? Is that an IQ bonus, or something else?

HtH kendo would be one skill above assassin, but as long as your are willing to spend the skill, you can get it.

All the skills we are using are in the Rifts Ultimate Edition and the Rifts Japan books.

1. I think so. i got this thing that automates some of the calculations and it showed 18 as giving a 4% boost to all primary skills now im not sure if this sheet is for a different rift or its the same for all. also something called a rifts cheat sheet with all the important info on the stats

2. Nice and yes i am willing to way to level 2 or maybe 3 to get it.

Yes, the +4% applies to all Skills that have a percentile to them.

The bonus even applies to new skills you get at later levels, so don't forget about the bonus!

Man, I have no idea but I’m thinking it best to do some thing a bit different than I normally play, just to flush out things and feel a bit more fresh. I went and looked on through cop/detective archetypical types and I don’t think we have any sort of techie-crime lab type. Someone who can be the field utility expert, do any nasty CSI work or provide basic repairs/fixes to things. So I’m leaning that way.
What race of creature?
I’m not sure what is allowed and what isn’t so I think I’ll err on the side of discretion in terms of species. So my eyes drifted towards a Changeling or maybe a silhouette? Something that while possibly out of the norm, isn’t likely to be seen or noticed without effort. If that’s out of the question, then a human might be my fall back!
How can we help? =)
By continuing to being the awesome you that you all are. Other than that, when we get the idea solidified, I’ll need some help understanding the system and rolls/roll commands etc.

Also sorry, I didn’t catch you until after bed time for us here, otherwise would have totally taken up the offer to bat some ideas around.
