A First-Class Flight to Nowhere

Today is a fine day in the kingdom. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and you are an elite member of society waiting to board The Gilded Rose.

The Gilded Rose, as even a half-wit would know, is a luxurious airship commissioned by the royal family to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our kingdom’s victory in a worldwide war to eradicate heathen sub-human races (ugh, elves) and their disgusting minions from our blessed continent.

But nobody cares about history, that’s boring.

The important thing is that everybody who’s anybody is here today to celebrate the maiden voyage of this fantastical airship.

And by celebrate, we mean throw copious amounts of money around to quietly yet effectively shame your neighbors into believing that they have less disposable income that you, the obviously superior citizen of this decidedly peaceful and non-magical land.

More information:

This is a casual fantasy roleplay because I have determined that effort is for nerds, and I am not a nerd. Please ignore the fours hours I spent on TvTropes and Wikipedia.

This idea is based loosely on Gilligan's Island, Disney's Atlantis, Baccano!, and The Forest. Basically, the player characters are aboard the Gilded Rose when the ship veers off-course and crashes into enemy (read: magical) territory. Shenanigans ensure.

The Gilded Rose is based on the Hindenburg and the Graf Zeppelin - please ignore the fact that the ship in the picture is not a zeppelin. Consider instead, that the Rose will have a bar and a casino. After all, we are not nerds who wrote 3/4s of this interest check without double checking if the picture matched the description, nosiree.

Also please ignore that at the time of writing, the kingdom does not have a name. It's not that it doesn't have a name, it's just that I can't think of anything that conveys the perfect mixture of fantasy!England's imperialism and fantasy!Germany's facism. I am, of course, open to suggestions.

This isn't the kind of roleplay with premade character slots, however, I got bored and made a list of possible character roles for anyone who likes the same dumb shit I like:
  • The war veteran who considers this crash landing to be a brisk morning jaunt
  • The socialite who's never done a day's work in his/her life and isn't about to start now
  • The engineer distraught to be thrust into a low(er than the initial setting)-tech land
  • The entertainer who is offended that you think their slightly pointed ears indicate they are a traitor to the nation
  • The mafia don on vacation who will not be granting any favors tonight
  • The mercenary doing reconnaissance on their next target
  • The noble at the bar who recognizes the mercenary and is extremely uncomfortable about the situation
Please ask questions, it's the only way I'll get around to finishing things.

Just remember - round ears only! Elves are the enemy.

Finally, someone's willing to say it! I have always been telling people that those nacho-eared sprites look suspiciously inferior. But the way these people treat me - it's like I'm the enemy, just for saying that! And here I thought ___________ was a free nation? Whatever happened to the first fantastic amendment, huh?

And what are they going to want next? Equal pay? I'm sorry, but if you weren't born into a wealthy family, you literally weren't meant to be rich. My great-great-great-great-grandfather worked extremely hard to collect all this gold from the mountain after that dragon died. Most of the peasants just let it sit there after they killed it, went back to their farms and 'fed their families'. Not my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather! He hired those orcs to carry all of the gold with his own two hands, and he had to tell the soldiers to burn down their village and kill their families if they didn't help! That was a lot of adversity! Imagine having to tell people you're going to murder their entire family and destroy their culture! One man shouldn't have that much responsibility on his shoulders.

Any way, I'm sorry, I just get really upset when everyone's trying to tell me I'm a bad person just because I think that maybe we should keep this kingdom for the people it's meant for. If you don't like it, find somewhere else to live! And if you do like it, go build your own!

Anyone want to play haughty, high-class 'Aryan' twins with me? I'm imagining they're:
  • Minor celebrities within the kingdom owing to their parents being nobility and probably military/other figures in their own right
  • Highly competitive (and pettily so) since they live in a society entirely based around superiority and, in their own eyes, the person that is the closest competition to them for social status is someone who is nearly identical to them
  • Completely self-centered; they probably form a classic "mean-girls"-esque duo
My own twin, I'm imagining, would have achieved success in whatever the aristocracy's favourite sport is; plus they went on to serve in the military (air force?) and quickly rose through the ranks and acquired 'honours' and 'medals' (due mostly to rampant nepotism).

Takers?

I'm thinking of doing a big game hunter/survivalist type guy who treats the situation like an unexpected vacation.

Ja, my friend I'd love to take you up on that offer!

Could I DM you a potential face claim?

face claim

//sweats nervously

I forgot pictures are a thing...

I have a character idea though, a waiter/low rank crew member, who's a secret communist or something. Just, annoyed that they're stuck with these rich buffoons, but also annoyed because they didn't get to crash the ship! It was their plan but NO now they're also stuck with these gilded idiots because someone or something else decided to bring it down.

So I'm thinking, if the kingdom where the Guilded Rose sets off from is based on a fantasy mish-mash of England and Germany (lots of rose imagery, pride in industry, strong class/caste divisions, and the "great war" being a fantasy version of the Holocaust... (which, btw, I'm torn between Vindrel or Kaltenzar for kingdom names)

Then we should make sure that we don't accidentally make a welcoming environment for actual Neo-Nazis who might find this site and think my thread is a welcoming place for them instead of a "lol elves dumb" RP. I have to make sure I'm upfront as possible that many characters will be unironically terrible people, so that no one will think I'm hiding some sort of "Hitler was good, akshuly" message.

I'm concerned that making the elves in this RP loosely based on certain Jewish tropes would end poorly, to put it lightly, so uh....

Which real-world country or combination thereof would be the least problematic inspiration for elven culture? I'm trying to go for an early Victorian aesthetic for the Gilded Rose and associated kingdom (so tentatively analogous to the 1850s, maybe?), which means the "great war" that ended 50 years ago would have been a time period roughly in line with like... Napolean.
  • France
  • Ireland
  • Poland
  • Byzantine Empire
Also keep in mind history is not my strongest subject, I'm only keeping the setting western-euro centric because that's what I know best as an American, and making Korean or Japanese elves might open up a whole can of unfortunate implications that I don't know how to address.

Send it through! We can also discuss other details.

I'm vibing with Vindrel.

I am so excited to just ridicule racism endlessly.

My inclination would be to suggest that you don't base the elves on any specific culture, since I think that would have troubling implications regardless of which one you chose.

I'd say you should design a culture from scratch, but that's kind of hard to do on short notice. Some suggestions, though. Magic is extremely important in the elven world, comparable to electricity, and the use of magic in elven culture is highly industrialized. During the war (if it was in fact a war) there was an arms race of sorts between the human and elven kingdoms. The humans came out on top, and all but eradicated elves and their culture.

👀 I mean, I’m not saying I’d be the socialite if you don’t have anything against me joining, but that’s exactly what I’m saying.

Is anyone interested in having their character (nobility/socialite/aristocrat/athlete/something else fancy and upper class) and my character (male, vain, socialite, aristocrat, trust-fund, former athlete (in a sport that only the aristocracy play), former soldier (with plenty of medals and promotions despite probably never seeing the battlefield; thanks, nepotism)) be formerly romantically involved, and now it's super awkward? We can hash out details via PM.

bee tee dubs ppl
