Voyage To The End

From the depths of the earth, an ethereal abyss has beckoned, a void so vast and unfathomable that it has remained shrouded in mystery since the dawn of time. Its inky depths whisper secrets untold, and within its murky embrace lies a realm of unspeakable power. This is the birthplace of all monsters, a place of unbridled darkness and unending chaos, and its presence has permeated the history of the world since it first manifested in the depths of eternity.

This colossal abyss seemed to defy the laws of the natural universe and loomed ominously over the land like a menacing specter. The people of the land, both blessed and cursed by its presence, soon discovered that the great void was not just a dark abyss but instead an entryway into many other levels. Explorers who dared to venture within the depths of the void discovered that within it lay an array of at least eighty mysterious realms, each with its own distinct laws.

At the heart of this mysterious web of realms lies the source of all magic, the nexus of all existence, the great and powerful Void. Here, all things become one, and all that was, is, and ever will be is made manifest. It is a place of great power and vast potential, a place where the impossible is made possible, and where the boundaries between realms are crossed at will.

It is said that within the depths of the great abyss, all manner of monsters were born: goblins, minotaurs, golems, and more. These creatures were born out of the magical energies that pervaded the void and soon spread across the many levels that the abyss connected—including our own.

In recent times, an expedition has been organized to explore the great abyss and discover its secrets. It is said to be a perilous journey, and all manner of people and creatures have been recruited to join the expedition—from hardened criminals to brave adventurers, from powerful wizards to mysterious creatures.

But what awaits them at the end of the abyss? What mysteries and secrets will they uncover? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—the great abyss will not give up its secrets easily.

The world of Erebus, otherwise known as Level 1, was born out of the great abyss. It has been shaped and molded by its mysterious power. Here, the boundaries between the physical and the ethereal are often blurred, and it is a place where magic is commonplace.

The citizens of Erebus are well aware of the power of the abyss and have built their lives around it. Magic is a part of daily life, and its influence can be seen in all aspects of the culture—from religion and architecture to art and music.

The dominant country of the world of Erebus is the Kingdom of Arcana, a powerful and prosperous nation that has been at the forefront of technological and magical advancement for centuries. Five decades ago, the kingdom conquered all others, establishing itself as the undisputed ruler of the world. Recently, however, the domain has been losing its grip on the world, and its authority has been diminishing. To combat this, the royal court has launched an ambitious expedition to reclaim its rightful place in the world. Organized by the powerful and wise King, the Arcana Expedition is determined to restore the kingdom's authority and ensure that Arcana will remain the dominant force in the world of Erebus.

The former conqueror responsible for Arcana's rise to power was a powerful and ambitious mage named Kyserias. He was a master of the arcane arts and a master of manipulation, and he used his vast knowledge and skill to unite the disparate nations of Erebus under his banner. Kyserias was a ruthless conqueror, but he was also a benevolent ruler. He used his power and influence to bring stability and order to the world of Erebus and to ensure that the citizens of his kingdom were protected from the dangers of the abyss. Kyserias's legacy lives on in the Kingdom of Arcana, and his name is often invoked when the kingdom's rulers seek to remind their people of the power of the abyss and the importance of the expedition to reclaim its waning authority.

Here are some details to keep in mind if enough people are interested in exploring this:
  • When it’s your turn to post, at maximum do not make any partners wait more than a week.
  • Be able to write 200+ words in a reply consistently. If you have writer's block or are in a conversation you can forgo this rule. But don’t make it a frequent thing.
  • Characters can be decently strong, but there is also a survival aspect. If they spent their whole lives fighting they shouldn’t have experience in many other expertises.

Very interested, I'm currently researching ideas for a fantasy rp of my own and this particular one is very similar to my main premise.

I'd love to join as an illusion/psychic mage that specialises in subterfuge and mental fortification.

I assume you aren't considering discord as a potential alternative for ooc?

I'm definitely interested if it's okay for people with less experience to join (I know I can manage the word expectations)! I'd love to take the role of a evasion tank/trickster/debilitater that can draw attention and create openings for the others to shine ^^

//This is a later edit, just saying disregard the character idea above. I have too many ideas and don't want to commit myself to just one quite yet >-<

Count me in. I'm intrigued by the concept. A good fantasy adventure could be just what I need.

Awesome! I suppose large mysterious chasms are a pretty popular prospect, haha. You would be very welcome to participate in this one as well and your character would be a fascinating contribution to the cast.

I am aware that some people use discord to encourage 24/7 activity, but all the ones I’ve participated haven’t been much better. Active people make an active OOC rather than the site that it’s on, so I’d just rather just use this one for the ease and promise that everyone can access it. Hope that doesn’t turn you off it too much, aha.

Ofc my friend. You’re more than welcome.

I'm not so concerned about the frequency of posts, I can't promise daily activity myself. I've personally found that rpn's format for communication is a little slow and having live-chats can smooth the creative process. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but I would still recommend it's merits.

In regards to access, well, it's free and useable in-browser~

With all the sneaky magey types. I think I'll focus on a more fighter type role.

So some questions.

1. How far has magic advanced?

2. You said magic has basically become a part of many things. Would that suggest that magic would be a staple of combat, even for melee/physical types?

3. What would you consider this a more traditional fantasy or anime fantasy?

4. Is there anything you DON'T want to see in this rp?

I getcha my friend, I can imagine the merits—easier to reach someone on an app on their phone instead of a website. (Assuming they’re not using the aforementioned browser version)

Just gonna stick with keeping things simple for now though. Thanks for looking out. I’ll keep it in mind, I’ve only ever used it for rps in the past haha.

1. Hmm, I’m unsure of the precise nature of this question but I’ll do my best to answer. Most people have some passing knowledge of their connection with the abyss. They use it for smaller more leisurely tasks, like heating food or creating a reading light often. Just some off hand tricks that can be easily taught by a relative.

More advanced magic takes some dedication to learn. It can be passive or active and is about training your brain to manifest divergences in reality. It can help to conduct some sort of ritual to get in the correct headspace. Some magic can require a component or sacrifice to a higher power that lurks somewhere in the abyss. There is no strict guideline really or categorizations. Nothing ridiculous like stopping time or reality altering by players though.

2. Basic strength enhancements would be common place for a higher valued soldier. Not necessarily a staple though. Any mage beyond that level of magic manipulation would be a priority in taking out within a war.

3. Anime fantasy with some elements from traditional : Orcs, Elves and humans being the dominant races on our home level.

4. No guns or mechs for sure, haha. Other than advanced tech, I do make a strong effort to work to fit in any creation a player makes within reason. It would have to be really out there for me to flat out reject it with no room for negotiation.

If this is still open, I'm definitely interested! The premise looks super cool, I'm quite intrigued.

I haven't come up with a character concept yet, but I'll do some brainstorming!

It will remain open for the duration of the interest check. I will close things if there gets to be too many characters. I do not see that happening though and if it does I’ll make sure to give a preemptive warning. Showing interest isn’t as much as a commitment compared to completing a character so I wouldn’t wanna close things too soon

No worries on that second half. You can think of details like personality, name, appearance meanwhile. I am working on a bit of lore and misc info that would hopefully make the rest easier when it’s time to prepare characters.

Got some misc. lore done. Hopefully it answers any unasked questions or clarifies some already answered ones.

I will prepare the CS and OOC page tomorrow and ping anyone who has already or will express interest in this thread!

Nice info, I like the setting. The history feels compelling and the magic seems logical.

Would it be possible to play as a scholar and ex-advisor to the royal court? I'd like for my mage to have once worked in the service of Kyserias before his disappearance. Now, he would simply study the arcane and worry over Eligus' politicking from the sanctuary of his university libraries.

count me in!! 😤 i do not have exact character concept down but i have a vague idea

One last jump scare bump. We have an interesting cast building with room still if anyone else wants to tag along. Hoping to get all characters done on the 9th—so there is still time! Go ahead and stop and say hello OOC 😊

I feel like I've seen you around somewhere before... ;)

I'm thinking of a roguish type who owes a lot money to the wrong crowd which is always very good motivation

His 'magical power' is teleportation, but I'm thinking of calling it 'Quantum Jump'. At the moment, he'd only be able to 'jump' 25 feet at a time and only with what he can easily carry. If you've seen the movie 'Jumper', it looks something like that. It can be quiet in the right cicumstances but it is by no means stealthy. If he jumps right behind someone, they are going to feel the aftermath of the jump: a strong current of air followed by a weak concussive force.

His other power is called 'Quantum Reflexes". It would make it seem like time is slowing down for him, but his brain is just 'moving faster', so he can react faster if he's surprised/caught off guard hopefully giving him enough time to teleport away like the coward he is. Just to reiterate, it doesn't speed up his body, only his brain. It's a combination of an intuitive dangersense thing and he can channel it to observe something particular e.g., card players using sleight of hand to cheat; movement that human eyes normally wouldn't be able to catch without specialized equipment that hasn't been invented yet -stuff like that. I suppose it could override or provide resistance to mind-affecting abilities as well...cause I hate that kind stuff since I main a fighter in DnD. People trying to read his mind will get an information overload of random useless garbage like the colour, length, width and average thickness of his last 1,000 poops; the BMI of all the women he's slept with and has ever wanted to sleep with, etc. Basically, it would make the mind reader's head feel like it's going to explode?

Let me know what you think, brother.

I actually have a character semi-finished that specialises in mental enhancement and protection, so I think I understand what you mean in regards to the empowered reaction-speed ability. If you're worried about getting mind-hacked then don't worry, I gotchu brother~
