The Primordial
"In the beginning, there was... an ending. And we Minions searched high and low for a new Overlord. We were like fleas without a dog, maggots without a carcass, pimples without a face! But Evil always finds a way, and in the Big Book o' Evil, we found... a beginning."

Welcome, friends! This is a request thread for a roleplay based on the video game franchise Overlord, specifically the game Fellowship of Evil. While Fellowship of Evil itself was a pretty blatant Diablo clone that led to the death of the franchise (curse you!), I found the premise too good to pass up! This would have worked quite well had it been done for a mainstream installment, rather than a spinoff attempting to piggyback other properties. I will establish the premise. This takes place after the events of Overlord II. Don't worry, you won't have to have played the games to understand the story, but it would certainly help if you were familiar with the world! But to put it simply, the previous Overlord has fallen and Gnarl, the Minion Master and Advisor to all prior Overlords, must undertake the task of choosing a successor. However, Evil has been on the decline lately. This is partially because the last Overlord thoroughly wiped out any competition, meaning he was the greatest source of Evil around... which makes the task of finding his replacement all the more harder, especially with those pesky heroes on the rise once more!

So, Gnarl summoned four damned souls, the Netherghuls, to compete for the throne. Four candidates, but only one can become the Overlord. Each Netherghul comes with their own background and specialties. We shall go over each of them here and if you are interested in spreading the gospel of Evil, you may choose which Netherghul you desire to play! I shall roleplay as Gnarl, being the all-knowing advisor and guide to our candidates on their journey. Plus, it fits my role as game master.~

The Warrior

A human female native to the land of Ruboria, Inferna was ostracized at an early age for her uncanny ability to project fire from her body. Ashamed and frightened of his child, Inferna's father abandoned her in the harsh dunes of Ruboria's desert. But it was here that the implacable warrior's spirit of Inferna was born. She survived and grew to depend on only herself and the power of her flames. Everyone back home was dead to her. Strong and resilient, Inferna was a formidable warrior, slaying the tallest of giants to the smallest of imps, earning the moniker of "The Red Death". Villages would leave offerings for hope of appeasing Inferna, lest she torch their homes on a whim. Inferna ultimately met her end at the hands of a family of rock giants, whose tough hides proved resilient to her flames. But unbeknownst to Inferna, she was being keenly observed by the Minions and when words got back to Gnarl, she was among the first to be resurrect as a prospective Overlord. Inferna's greatest strengths lie in her physicality and mastery over flames. However, her harsh upbringing has led her to adopt a loner's mindset. She prefers to do things herself and has trouble commanding a horde. Thus, her Minion leadership is mediocre at best. But when the Minions are perfectly willing, and happy, to die for their master, perhaps it won't be such a drawback after all.

Hakon was a scoundrel in life, the leader of a band of Dwarven mercenaries known as "The Utter Bastards". Whether this was because they were all bastards in the literal sense or Hakon just thought it sounded cool is unclear. Hakon was the most conniving Bastard of them all, quickly ascending the chain of command through trickery, deception, and more than enough literal backstabbing of his peers. Such behavior was the way of the Utter Bastards. The leader's worth was measured by how long they held onto the position. If the leader was easily killed by his underlings, he was obviously unfit to lead and deserved to be killed! But Hakon was a wily one and held onto that title for as long as he could. For two years, he staved off betrayal after betrayal, killing anyone who so much as looked at him funny. Hakon and his band were soon contracted to kill a privileged Dark Elf family. The hatred between Dwarves and Elves was strong and the pay was good, so Hakon accepted without complaint. However, it was here that Hakon's long career met a bloody end, as he and the Dark Elf Cryos slew each other in battle. The Minions, impressed by both, got a two for one deal in Overlord candidates. Hakon is nothing if not wily. While naturally hardy for a Dwarf, Hakon preferred trickery and underhanded methods to dispatch his foes. Poison-tipped blades, knives in the back, cutting throats in their sleep, the whole package. But thwarting over two dozen assassin attempts on his life has left Hakon incredibly paranoid of those around him and is always expecting someone to stick a knife in his back. Even the Minions. Of course, being forced to work with Cryos, the Elf who ended his life, has bred a particular animosity between them. Think Legolas and Gimli if both were evil and never got along.
The Dark Prince

The youngest in a long line of Dark Elf princes, Cryos grew up privileged. His family had an affinity for the cold, carving the ice caves of Nordberg into their own forest of frost. Cryos was especially gifted in the arts of cryomancy, birthing golems out of the various creatures he'd frozen to protect his domain. Cryos's family had their fair share of enemies, however. The Shining Justice Paladins, a heroic group, tried time and again to penetrate their icy stronghold, but always failed. They forsook a full-frontal assault in favor of a more underhanded method: mercenaries. They hired the Utter Bastards, led by Hakon, to infiltrate the fortress and dispatch the Dark Elves within. The Bastards succeeded in wiping out Cryos's family, with Cryos himself falling in battle against Hakon. The Minions snatched up both of their souls for the price of one, and Gnarl brought them back as Netherghuls. Of course, Cryos isn't very happy about working with the very dwarf responsible for ending his bloodline, as well as his life. Whether they set aside their differences or not is of no consequence to Gnarl, however. Rather, he believes their hatred for another will push them to be the best Overlord candidates they can possibly be. Cryos is best described as calculating, level-headed, and pompous. Growing up a royal figure, Cryos believes he holds a degree of superiority over his compatriots and is owed the title of Overlord on account of his family throne being robbed from him in life.
The Necromancer
Artwork.overlord-fellowship-of-evil.839x1080.2015-04-23.34.png
Malady's background is one of tragedy. Left on the doorstep of a bakery as an infant, she was subjected to an array of abuse from the Ladies of the Blessed Beard. She escaped at the age of eight, torching the orphanage and claiming the lives of everyone within. She fled to the countryside, where she was eventually adopted by an elderly necromancer by the name of Grimora. Malady learned everything there was about necromancy from Grimora and grew more comfortable in the company of the dead than the living. They were so much easier to control than the more chaotic mortals that walked the lands. Unfortunately, necromancers were looked upon with eternal suspicion from villagers and they were made the scapegoats of just about every crime and wrongdoing that occurred... in truth, Malady was responsible for roughly half of their woes, which didn't do her any favors. Eventually, the local peasants were rallied by the Shining Justice Paladins to finally snuff out the lives of the necromancers and a lynch mob stormed the castle Malady and Grimora resided. Grimora was killed by the mob and a horrified Malady took her own life out of grief, but not before placing a curse on herself. Upon death, a wave of dark energy exploded from her body, killing the entire mob in the process. But Malady was not allowed to rest, instead being seized by Gnarl to become a prospective Overlord. Malady holds great sway over death, but her harsh life has left her withdrawn and spiteful towards those around her. She's lacking in the physical department, but easily excels in her necromancy and black magic.

All the pieces are in place. Four candidates, one prize! Master control over the hordes of Minions, deal with those pesky heroes, and reestablish the dark domain that is rightfully yours! Do you have what it takes to be the Overlord? If you wish to take part, comment below on what part you would be interested in playing! However, there are some rules and guidelines that shall be posted below.
  • There will be no god-modding of the character you choose. I will better outline the extent of the characters' powers in the roleplay itself when Gnarl goes over each of the Netherghuls.
  • I would prefer players who are 18 and up, as this will likely include a lot of violence and some language.
  • I will advance the plot as we go, so please do not try to hijack the roleplay. If you have ideas you wish to share for things regarding character arcs, plot developments, etc., I have no problem with you sharing them, but I will hold the final say in whether it's implemented or not.
  • There is going to be some action in this roleplay, so you will need to be at least decent when it comes to writing action scenes.
