The Blue Sailboat Lounge
The Blue Sailboat Lounge is a nice space with a lingering scent of alcohol and smoke. The bar is to the left when you enter and large booths to the right. There's a space in the middle of the floor where people often just stand around or sometimes dance. There's a stage in the back of the space, drawing everyone's attention when the right performer is performing, and seven tables right in front of the stage. The hours are 8pm-3am. The employees are supposed to be there for opening at 7:50. The live entertainment starts at 9pm and ends at about 12:15, with breaks in-between performances

October 18, 1957
Setlist-
9:00- Pierre Guerre
9:30- Gertrude Sutton
10:00- Margot Dupont
10:30- Julian Aberdeen
11:00- Pierre Guerre
11:30- Elle & Sully
12:00- Margot Dupont

Dawn rushed into The Blue Sailboat just in time for opening, 7:50. She though that she'd be late but she just barely made it. Her mother had set her up on a date that ran late but went horribly. She hoped she'd never have to see the man again, he was terribly rude. She didn't know what she was expecting though, her mother always set her up with terrible matches.

She walked over to the bar where her coworker and friend was getting everything ready for opening. "Heya Vincent," she greeted with a smile. She glanced at the wall right next to the bar where there was a pinboard with a setlist of all the acts that would be performing that night. There were a couple new talents, like the double act, but for the most part they were all familiar faces. She took a seat at one of the barstools. It usually didn't get busy at the sailboat until 9, before then it was usually just a couple people needing drinks and the performers coming in to check out their time for the night.

Pierre was already been there for teen minutes, he had taken a drink from Vincent and had just climbed the stage to practice when dawn entered. He sipped his whisky as he watched her walk over to Vincent. She had been on date he could tell as she was still dressed and make uped for one. She looked beautiful and part of him felt the old peg of guilt he had when he broke it of all those years ago.

He cleared his throat and pushed the thought out of his mind. He had to do it, he wasnt right for her, he still wasnt. She needed someone to take care of her, he could barely take care of himself and his brother back home. Still... Again he tried to remove the thought from his mind with his drink and focus on practice. "Bonsoir, Beaute." He called out to her."Any request for my little rehearsal."

Margot Dupont

Margot rushed into The Blue Sailboat in her usual disorganized fashion. Her first stop was at the setlist. She hummed in approval because she had good slots. She always liked having a second slot that was later where she could be a bit more brash and, frankly, a bit more inappropriate, than her earlier set time. She had to be careful though. Comedians were being busted left and right for obscenities. Lenny Bruce was a notable example. She has yet to be arrested, although she knew it was a good possibility. Her parents would be unhappy to say the least.

Margot's next stop was the bar, where she took a seat on one of the stools, draping her jacket over the back and placing her purse on the bar. "Vincent! My favorite bartender and one true love, please hook a girl up with something to drink," she pleaded. Despite doing more than her fair of shows, Margot still got nervous. So, she liked to have a drink or three before she went on stage. It calmed her nerves and opened her up. Personally, she believed she did her best when she was tipsy.

"Woah there, Dawn, you look nice. Date tonight?" she questioned. She knew that Dawn's mother had been setting her up on dates. Which were more often than not, terrible. They both had parents who did not approve of them and favored their more traditional siblings. They grew quite close over their times spent at the Blue Sailboat and Margot considers Dawn to be a close friend.

Dawn turned to the stage when she heard Pierre. Her and Pierre used to go out but he broke it off some time ago. She never knew exactly why, but they were still friends. She hadn't noticed him up there at first. "Hi," she greeted him, "Just sing anything." Dawn loved his voice and enjoyed listening to him sing anytime she could. She then heard her friend Margot come in and ask for a drink. Margot was a comedian, a very talented one at that, and a frequent at The Blue Sailboat.

"One for me too," she said to Vincent, she needed a drink before they opened up to get through the night. "Thanks," she replied to Margot with a small laugh, "Yeah. It was awful though, you know my mother."

"Bonsoir, Margot." She greeted Margo as she entered as well before smiling at both."My own choice huh. Well when faced with such a beautiful and discerning audience I need to bring my top material. Something of my own native land because I know you will truly appreciate it and deserve the best." He said moving to a record player and put on the appropriate record as he hadnt had his back up band hadnt arrived yet. He set the pin down and cleared his breath.

He let the record play a bit and allowed his body to sway a bit. He didnt like recorded music, it never had the same quality and purity as live music with proper instruments. Still it would do. He closed his eyes and leaned forward as I he wanted to sing close to his audience, he began to seeing his voice and face matching the mood of the song as if really feeling it.

He says, flipping the small towel rag from his shoulder to wiping out a glass, taking note of the sudden appearance of Margot. "Mhm." He says in reply to her order, fixing up two simple drinks and sliding them over to the two. "So, there a reason you're all dressed up for?" He looks to Dawn, the bartender rolling his head side to side to release tension building in his neck.

The night before, the man had another one of his blackouts, and because of it, his head was throbbing in pain and he had random sores throughout all of his muscles. The man didn't even want to begin to think of what happened after he forgot everything moments before the blackout of his. In between his lips, the Rivera balances an unlit cigarette, eyes casting back down to organizing the bar itself and repeating the process of cleaning and placing all the sorts of glasses.

Nichelle Gavier

Elle had showed up to the bar at a time that she considered early, but upon seeing Pierre already on stage practicing, she could see was fairly late. She considered going to the bar but she found the idea of drinking before a performance to be distasteful. She needed to be at her best if she wanted to impress tonight. Instead she went to check out the set list. "Second to last?" she murmured unhappily. Everyone knew that if you wanted to leave an impression you went first or you went last. Not only was that unfunny comedian going last, she even had two slots. Elle tried to remind herself that she was new and untested. Eventually they'd all realize the talent that she and Sully possessed. They'd move to a better slot soon enough. Maybe even have more than one if they became popular enough. Nichelle heard Pierre's singing stop and she turned her attention to the people who began trickling in. She found herself drifting over figuring it was a good idea for her to get to know her coworkers. The only people she'd spoken to at length were Gertrude and Margot; and only one of those conversations had been pleasant. It would do her good to have some positive relationships other than hers with Sully. Her eyes cut to Margot briefly offering an unimpressed look. Of course she would be drinking before her performance, some people just didn't take anything seriously. Then her attention came to the woman receiving some comments about her appearance. She did look quite nice but Elle had no way of knowing if this was typical for a sever at the lounge or not. "You do look very pretty," Elle offered to the virtual stranger. She immediately remembered in her awkwardness why Sully was her only friend.

"Evening, Frenchie," she called to Pierre. She turned and listened to Dawn as she spoke about her mother. "Your mother and mine would get along quite well. Every time my father hires a young lawyer, my mother invites them over to dinner to try and push us together. She stopped after I left halfway through to come here," she laughed. Margot wasn't performing that night, but that was the start of her becoming a regular. She would often come to the bar to avoid her parents. "I can't stand it. They act all prim and proper and like they've never done anything remotely impolite or unladylike in their entire lives," she complained. She rooted through her small purse for her pack of cigarettes and pulled one out.

While Vincent prepared her drink, Margot lit the cigarette, blowing the smoke away from the bar. She took her drink gratefully, taking a sip. She only smoked at the bar because her mother would often lecture her for it if she smoked at home. It's all her parents did nowadays. Lecture after lecture. Did they expect her to actually listen to them when all they did was talk about how disappointed they were in her? She took another sip of her drink at the thought. "Need a light?" she asked Vincent, noting the unlit cigarette. She held her lighter out to him. She was definitely curious about Vincent. He was so private and that only made her want to pry, but she knew better than that. They were on good terms and she didn't want to mess with that. She always respected it when he let her know she was going too far.

Margot leaned on the bar. "Any bets on whether Gertrude will find her schtick tonight?" she asked the two. Margot practically knew all of the other performers at the bar. Even the duo that was new to the Blue Sailboat. Of course they would be here. She liked Sully just fine. It was Elle she had a problem with. She caught Elle's look and rolled her eyes. She thought she was all that. Sure, she was definitely talented, but she was pretentious and overbearing. It was none of her concern on how she prepared for her act and who was she to judge who was funny or not. The crowd, who was the true test liked Margot, so she had no concern over what Elle thought.

Dawn took a sip of her drink before responding to Vincent. "Yeah, I had a date. A very bad one." The only good thing that came out of the date was a free dinner. She made sure to order the most expensive thing off of the menu just to spite the guy.

She listened to Pierre sing and smiled a bit. She looked over to him and smiled, her way of letting him know he sounded good as he preformed. He was very talented, she wondered why he never went professional.

Dawn turned around quickly when she heard a new voice compliment her appearance. "Thanks hun," She smiled. This must be one of the new performers. She got up from her seat and walked behind the bar. "I doubt it," she shook her head in response to Margot's question, "She's really nice and all, but the poor girl's a mess when it comes to her act. I'm glad she's trying to find her passion though." She grabbed her apron from a small cupboard behind the bar and tied it, getting ready to open up in a few minutes.

Mauve Quinn

Ding.

Mauve slowly pushed the door open and stepped into the Blue Sailboat Lounge, wrinkling her nose for a short second at the smell of smoke. She was new in town and her neighbour had recommended the place to her, telling her that the ambience of the place was nice and the drinks were good. She looked around at the place, thinking it did have a pretty pleasant interior and glanced at the bar which only had a few open seats left.

She took an empty spot at the bar and spoke to the bartender, who had been talking to a blond waitress, "Good evening. It's a good night, isn't it? What's the house specialty here?"

It was her first time here, and she thought it was okay to binge a little bit. She rummaged in her purse for some cash and realized she didn't have any. Damn. New place, new start and she was going to dine and dash on the first night. Or should she say, wine and dash. Haha. She looked around for someone that seemed friendly enough to foot her liquor bill for the night and found a cheerful looking woman with brown hair cut short.

"Sorry, to ask this but..." Mauve hesitated. Maybe it was best to just ask for a glass of water. She dawdled for a bit and forced the words out. "Do you think you'd be kind enough to buy a drink for someone new in town? I'll pay you back later."

He hands the igniter back to the comedian, taking an inhale and exhale, watching the mist press against the lounge's ceiling. "Thank you." He says with a certain softness, remembering to put out the ashtrays for those who do smoke.

Just then the ding of the entrance rings out, and Vince takes a glance up to the brunette woman who comes walking in, and looking out of place. He knew just about every face in the town, so it was interesting to see a new one come wandering in. "Evening." He answers abruptly, tapping the end of his cig on the edge of the ashtray in front of him. before letting it rest in one of the diveted holders it had around the circular object. "Drink of the house tonight is the Whiskey Sour."

The bartender turns around and grabs a small menu looking sheet, placing it in front of the woman. On it explains all what's inside the drink of the evening: 2 parts of bourbon, lemon juice, half a part of sugar syrup, half part of egg white, cubed ice, and garnished with either an orange slice or cherry. Customer's choice.

However, he arches a brow at the woman's direction when she asks Margot if she could pay for her drink. Why would someone come into a place selling beverages and meals with not enough money to buy them, Vincent wonders, taking a look over to Margot and studying her reaction. "Don't worry about it, Dupont." He tells her, looking to the stranger. "This one can be on the house for the newcomer." And with that, he nods towards the woman and turns to start mixing together the drink.

"Sorry and thanks," Mauve said, a little embarrassed but kept her face straight. "Silly me, I seem to have forgotten my wallet and my spare cash," she added as an explanation to hopefully divert the stare the bartender was giving her. Though he'd probably think she was an idiot instead of a freeloader now. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

She glanced at the menu without really seeing it. As long as it was sweet, she didn't have any strong preferences for alcohol. "I'll take the Whiskey Sour. Could I get a slice of orange on top?"

She discreetly tapped her finger to the music while waiting for her drink. The current performer had a nice voice, she thought. French? Not Quebecois French, though. Pity.

Pierre ended his song, falling silent for a moment as he thought back on his song. Not bad, he thought as he walked over to stop the record, he felt his voice was a bit to throaty and not as smouth as he liked it to be. He song a line again and again softly trying to make sure he could it right. For the moment, he ignored the others there making sure his singing was right. It seemed the others were on their own converstation anyways which didnt bother him. He took a sip of his drink and masseged his throat. He tried the line again but didnt feel he was getting in and he had finished his drink.

He stepped of the stage to the gathered collegues around the bar. Coming up by Mauve as she waited for her own drink, he smiled at her and gave a flirtatious nod and wink. "A refil on that wisky, my good Vincent." He said to the barmen. "And honest critiscism of my singing if that doesnt cost that much extra." He requested. As much as he liked the girls here, he knew they would have nothing but praise for his singing, while he appreciated Vincents tough honesty.

Dawn smiled as a customer entered. The lady said she was new in town. Dawn always liked to see new faces, maybe this lady would become a new regular. She wanted to chat but the lady was ordering a drink so she decided not to. She could always chat her up a bit later. Pierre came off of the stage and began talking to Vincent. He was asking for honest criticism of his singing. She couldn't help but give a tiny laugh. The guy was amazing, and she wasn't just saying that because he was attractive and they used to go out. In fact that was the reason why she'd look for any flaw or imperfection but find none.

She turned to Pierre. "It was awful. All your notes were flat, it was torture on my ears," she said sarcastically with a laugh. "Of course you were amazing. You always are," she smiled.

Pierre turned to her and gave her a amused look at her her sarcastic insults at his singing. He touched his chest when she was done and gave a gasp and a sigh of relief. "Oh mon dieu, dawn. You had given me the shock of my life with your barbs against my singing." He said in mock shock and wouded manner before chuckling himself. He was glad despite of everythig that he and Dawn had kept a friendly relationship, she was an amazing girl waisted as a waitress. "Here i though i had to question my greetness."

She smiled back at her and leaned against the bar counter, looking at her as there was noone else worth the effort to do so. "Another dud from your mother?" He asked curiously. "Or has she finally got it right?"

Elle felt a bit uncomfortable without Sully comfortably by her side as usual. Still, best not to make it known and try to be sociable. Her eyes tracked Pierre as he ordered a drink and requested a critique on his performance. If she was being honest it was a bit mesmerizing. He sounded like someone she might expect to hear on a professional record. Quietly she wondered what someone so talented was doing at The Blue Sailboat Lounge. Still, she found herself saying to him unprompted, "Could've been smoother. Song like that should sound like butter." She watched the bartender, Vincent she gathered, prepared a complimentary drink for the guest. She wasn't certain that was the best of business practices but Elle didn't really have the mind for business. Or generosity when she could help it. The girl probably went to dozens of bars with the same story, trying to get as many free drinks as she could manage. Not that she judged the girl. Elle remembered having to do that a bit when things for Sully and her were particularly rough. Despite her admonishment for drinking before a performance she wasn't a total prude. She liked to have fun even if she couldn't always afford it.

"Mauve," Mauve nodded back at the performer, accepting his offer. "Those were some nice notes you hit there." She tilted her head towards the blond waitress but directed her words to the singer, "She's right, you have a good voice. That's not empty flattery, by the way."

She turned back towards the front of the bar when another woman entered the conversation and the performer started into more private territory. Duds from her mother? The candy? Those weren't bad. Mauve wondered if she had any in her pocket. She pulled her brain back from drifting off and focused on the present. Although she was very, very curious about the story behind the duds, which were probably not the candy, she didn't want to pry. Though she couldn't help but overhear bits and pieces because they were right beside her. Nobody can blame her for that, right?

Mauve was listless, sitting alone and trying not to eavesdrop on her neighbours, so she rummaged in her purse for the nth time, hoping for a miracle to happen. It didn't. Since her purse didn't want to give her miracles, she tried for her pocket instead. She felt for a sweet and pulled out a Caramel Cream and a Tootsie Roll. Now it was just a matter of which one to eat first.

"Another dud," Dawn replied to Pierre, "He showed up late by nearly an hour. And get this... he didn't even tip the waiter. I doubt she'll ever get it right." She sighed and tucked her hand behind her ear. She remembered the times she and Pierre went out, it was just a fling really. He was great though, one of the best people she'd ever been with.

She raised an eyebrow as the new performer girl remarked on Pierre's singing. What she said wasn't really accurate, his singing was very smooth. She was curious about who this girl even was. She looked over at the setlist. She had to be Elle, part of the double act. "You're Elle, right?" Dawn asked.

Elle bit her bottom lip and assessed the girl. "That's my name alright, can't say I've had the pleasure of learning yours though." Elle noticed how she had to look over at the setlist to find her which was fine, Elle and Sully are still fairly green when it came to everything. Still she found herself craving that instant recognition that she'd had at her old gig. Say way you would about the foul mouthed owner or the grungy clientele or even the piss poor pay. It was a place that she could walk into and everyone knew her name. At least the set list had her nickname on it rather than her often mispronounced and misspelled first name. If she had to deal with more people calling her 'Michelle' she was due another conversation with her mother about what was and wasn't cruel to name a child.

"I'm Dawn," she introduced herself with a grin, "I wait the tables around here." Although she wanted to do something bigger with her life she quite enjoyed her job. She got to talk to more people and work with people she liked, it was wonderful. Not to mention all the talent that showed up was great. "I also have the duty of setting up for and announcing the acts. Anything I should know about yours? Stage names? A special setup?" She asked Elle.

"Ah, no matter ma cherie, at least you get a free meal and you know you have a mother looking out for you." He said kindly to her, trying to improve her mood before he sighed. "There are people who wish to have a mother who is doting."

Pierre turned a looked again amused at Elle at her frankness in his singing ability and chuckled."Finally some proper constructive criticism to my singing." He said bowing his head at the ebony skinned critic."Merci for the honestly, I felt it was something like that. I am usually able to sing like butter as you say, I am not sure why I am not hitting the spot now." He said thoughtfully."Age is catching up with me I guess."

At Mauves comment, he nodded a thanks."You are kind my dear." He said, "But I dont need a swollen head, like certain people I can mention." He gave a knowing look at his colleagues."There is always room of improvement, nice is not perfect." He explained.

"I try," Mauve looked up from her candy, amused at the singer's mention of certain people. There's some drama around here, she thought. She wondered if she'd be able to tease out the story. She brushed that thought away before it took over her mind. "And your age has definitely not caught up with you yet. Besides, even if it did, you're still young. Younger than me, at least." She gave a wry laugh.

Now that the people beside her had moved out of talking about personal territory, she butted in the conversation when there was a lull. "Are you new here as well? I just moved to Manhattan." Mauve directed the question to the dark-skinned Elle. She took out a hand. "I'm Mauve. Maybe we can help each other out in this new place."

She gave a hand to Dawn as well. "Mauve. You seem to have a pretty hectic job," she said while looking around at the full booths and crowded bar.

Elle smiled at Dawn and considered her role in the lounge. It wasn't a bad job, all things considered especially if the girl wasn't particularly musically inclined. Nightlife especially in a place like this could be great fun to work in under the right circumstances. "Elle and Sully are just fine, and all I ask is for the mic to be the right height." Elle told her with a wink. She couldn't count the amount of times that the mic was set at a height for the more common petite and demure female performers. It distracted from her act to have to maneuver it about.

Elle was pleased with Pierre's response. Many performers were so particular about what criticism they would accept, usually none. She wasn't so shy to those things. She knew how to use comments to fuel her craft. She utilized the useful and dismissed those born of jealously or false impressions. At his comment about age she snorted unattractively. "You don't look all that old to me. Maybe you're just being a bit too restrained." she offered cheekily. At the mention of certain full of herself people her attention couldn't help but go to Margot briefly before returning her focus to the lounge patron.

To Mauve she admitted, "Not new to the city I'm afraid. Though I'm not from here originally." Elle played at one of the short-hairs by the nape of her neck as she considered the girl and her offer. "I am new to Blue Sailboat, though." she confessed. "I wouldn't mind showing you around town sometime, sweet thing."

"Nice to meet you Mauve," she smiled, "I do, but I enjoy it. I do hope you like it here." Mauve seemed like a nice lady and with any luck she'd become a regular . It was always nice to have friendly faces around. She got Elle's request for the mic to be at the right height and nodded, "You got it hun." She took a glance around the Sailboat and realized it was starting to fill up. "Well, I better get to actually doing my job. Nice talking to ya though," she gave a little wave to Mauve and Elle. She grabbed her notepad and pen for taking orders and went off to check on the customers. She got a drink order from a table so she went over to the bar to put it in.

"A Whisky Sour with a cherry and a White Russian for table three," she requested to Vincent and slid him the paper with the order on it, "How's your night going?" she asked him, waiting on the drinks.
