The Traveller
It has been eight centuries since the end of the Dragon War. Euross is no more; the continent lies in Nineteen pieces, shattered by the fury unleashed by the Ten Aspect Dragons and the Artefacts they gave the mortals to wage war. Riddled with guilt, the Aspects retreated from the material plane, their Artefacts lost and forgotten to myth and legend.
In those eight hundred years, empires have rose and fell, the dragons have all but disappeared, and the number of lineaged, those mortals who can control and cast magic, have dwindled to but a relative few.
As the world enters into an unprecedented era of peace between its largest civilizations, disturbing rumours have started to emerge from across the Nineteen Islands. The dead are said to walk in the Commonwealth's colonies, the queen of Volk has vanished without a trace, and savage and devastating raids by creatures thought long dead have started occurring in the Phoenix Kingdom. A vocal handful of priests have started stating that these events indicate the beginning of the End Times.
With these events have come posters, up and down the length and breadth of the broken continent, begging for help with a vague and dangerous task. Similarly, letters have been sent to those deemed 'worthy of trust' signed by one Kadri Laar, informing them of two things: an Artefact has been found, and she is looking for help to find the rest.
The Nineteen Islands were never always so. Eight centuries ago they were whole; a Continent that spanned the globe known as Euross. This single landmass had a temperate climate in almost every corner but now such land is relatively rare. Following an event known as the Dragon War, Euross was shattered into Nineteen pieces and human civilisation was plunged into a technological and political dark age. Where the blood of the Aspect Dragons fell, the climates dramatically shifted, transforming bountiful lakes and seas into deserts and salt flats, mighty forests into tundra, and grassy plains into mountainous, storm-filled terrains. In the eight hundred years since the Dragon War, three countries have emerged and have begun to dominate the Islands economically, politically, and militarily: the Commonwealth and its colonies, the Empire of Alba, and the Kingdom of Fire.
As it stands, the Nineteen Islands are roughly at the technological level of Renaissance Europe, minus the gunpowder. The sexes are considered equal, and have been universally for the last century or so.
In the Nineteen Islands, magic is inherent to, and can only be performed by, people called lineaged. These people are born with draconic scales on their bodies, typically in small clusters on one on their forearms though, in rarer cases, scales can appear elsewhere on the body also.
Lineaged people can trace their bloodline back to one of the ten Aspect Dragons who created the world.
Magic is physically and mentally straining, and in general spells are inherent to a lineaged: their bodies are prepared to cast magic, but it is a matter of learning the words and techniques necessary to unleash said magic.
There is one religion in the Nineteen Islands: the Aspect Dragons. This religion teaches that ten divine siblings known as Aspect Dragons created the world and all the creatures in it. Roughly eight hundred years ago, the Aspect Dragons fought against each other in a conflict known as the Dragon War, and broke the continent they had created (known as Euross) into nineteen pieces. Horrified at the destruction they had caused, the Aspects then sent themselves into exile, never to return to the Material Plane.
The religion is certainly ambiguous in some areas, and this has been encouraged to a degree by the Haven to make the various Aspect Dragons seem more appealing. One example of this is the Aspect Dragon of Poison also being the Aspect Dragon of Alchemy and Medicine.
However, it is accepted by all inhabitants of the three countries that the Aspect Dragons exist and that they control their primary Aspects.

The call for help has been answered by a small handful. Upon arrival in a small tavern in Volk, the group were hastened to leave after a stranger and their entourage entered the tavern. After a brief confrontation with the strangers outside of the stables, the group were teleported by Kadri to within a couple of miles of the Artefact of Metal, outside of a forest in Parthia.
When they entered it, they discovered that the Artefact had transformed the surrounding foliage; all plants were encased in a layer of bronze. Their search for the Artefact was short - its guardian came to challenge them directly. After slaying the beast, the party were able to extract the Artefact from its body and they made their way out of the forest, teleporting to a nearby village to rest for a night.
