Prologue

Skydark
(many centuries ago at the end of the Age of the Ancients)

This history is lost to humans as civilization collapsed and we were thrown back to the Stone Age. But it is said that the Ancients were a decadent people who dared to challenge the Gods.

In 2027 evidence of a massive object entering the Solar System was detected passing through the Oort Cloud. It was travelling at about 2 million miles per hour relative to the Sun and on what many thought was a collision course with Earth. And it was massive, affecting the asteroids in the Oort Cloud, yet invisible. The date of impact was set in early 2038.

The closer the object got the more astronomers learned. It was incredibly small and extremely dense. Some theorized it was a remnant fragment of a neutron star smaller than a pea. (A teaspoon of neutron star matter would weigh as much as the Earth.) It carried in its wake an asteroid / meteor swarm, some as large as planet killers. These were tentatively identified as remnants of carbon and iron planets, and even earth like planets.

10.6 years we had to prepare. Of course, for much of that time, governments kept the threat a secret for as long as they could.

Note: Yes, I realize how unrealistic this is. Near impossible to keep a secret this big for so long. But this is the scenario if we want to roleplay the months of panic just before the apocalypse.

By some miracle the object missed the Earth as did the planet killer size asteroids. But the planet was pelted by tens of thousands of impacts. Most hit the ocean, but nowhere was truly safe. At least 99% of the impact craters were far smaller than the one at Meteor Crater, AZ. Worse was the effects of gravitational forces. Massive tsunamis of the Hollywood variety wiped out the coastal regions. The Chain of Fire went crazy with earthquakes and volcanoes. (This would include the Yellowstone Supervolcano.)

It is believed that within some of the meteors that made it to Earth were the building blocks of life. Some of that has mutated simple lifeforms - reptiles, insects, fish, ferns, conifers, and amphibians. (Birds and mammals were not affected for a very long time.) Meteor impact sites often contain diamond or high iron or metal content.

The population of Earth was dramatically reduced. Civilization collapsed. There were pockets of enclaves, the result of those who went into bunkers with government origins. But those did not survive.

The Present

Mankind was literally forced back into the Neolithic Era. It has been thousands of years since Skydark. Languages have come and gone. Small civilizations rose briefly and fell. Small kingdoms have formed.

The current world is something similar to the bending factions of the Avatar series. However, there is No Avatar, never has been. Neither are there any of the specialized bending abilities - like metal, lightning, etc. Neither are there any powerful benders. Most benders can do little more than start a campfire, separate water from mud, turn water to ice on a small scale, shape stone. It takes many benders working together to achieve more powerful effects. And their numbers are so few that they are not risked in combat.

Technologically, the most built up locations have achieved Iron Age technology. Paper has just been invented, but hasn’t seen widespread use. And there is the occasional anomaly. Very early feudal might be the best description ca 600-700 AD.

Religions are shamanistic, animistic, or even demonic. There are no Gods (at least none worshipped). Science is based on the elementals. Alchemy is a thing, but is little better than primitive chemistry except for rare cases. If someone wants to make an alchemist, they will need a lab - which is expensive and not mobile. Astrologers are possible. Fortune tellers. Again, these tend to be non mobile occupations. And if you choose one, you will NOT be able to bend.

There are Spirits, Demons, and Mythological Beasts. But they are rare. Don’t expect to see those in populated regions.

Setting

The RP will be set in North America - initially - but may extend worldwide. It is expected that the group(s) will migrate from region to region. Expect the geography to have been changed a bit by geologic forces. Exactly where we start will depend on what bending any members of the group have.

Despite the destruction, it is still possible to find occasional ruins and artifacts of the 21st century. But … it HAS been nearly 5000 years. There would have to be a good reason for such things to survive.

Elemental Aspected Regions

The Chain of Fire would be ideal for the development of Fire.
The South Sea Islands, polar regions, or any island clusters would do well for Water.
Earth is a tricky one. Rock City near Chattanooga, TN screams Earth. Chiricahua National Park is another good spot. Pennsylvania is good. Colorado and New Mexico are also good.
Air? Well in Avatar the air benders were nomadic with a few temples. So … maybe some very high elevation sites (Himalayas, sites of old Aztec ruins, etc).
