It isn't quite so simple to be the perfect parent. In fact, parenting perfectly in times like these would be nothing short of a miracle. Still, some parents really could do better. And these eight know it. At age 16-18, this group of youths have been pressured to learn the art of 'gratitude' toward their parents. How? They're to attend a disciplinary summer school by the name of 'Orchardwood Conservatoire'. The entire goal of disciplinarians at Orchardwood are to teach these adolescents gratitude that their parents claim is well deserved. Regardless of their upbringing. It could always be worse, right?

The roleplay will be centered around eight different youths from eight different upbringings.

The parent(s) that smothered
→ The parent(s) that neglected
→ The parent(s) that tried to force fame
→ The parent(s) obsessed with appearances
→ The adoptive parent(s)
→ The parent(s) with ridiculous expectations
→ The parent(s) of physical abuse
→ The parent(s) of favoritism

More details about these below. Whether your character displayed frustration with their parents or not, they felt they should be sent here to really "re-center" themselves. But Orchardwood isn't exactly a paradise, and that'll be discovered rather quickly.

roles in depth
Please note that it's optional for these roles to apply to both parents, or even to have two parents!

smothered : a lot of people remark on how being neglected by parents destroys you. what's lesser spoken of, however, are the parents who shadow your every movement. you've never been able to do things your way. you can't choose your own friends. interests. you can't go places by yourself. every appointment ever made was made and accompanied by a parent. you don't speak for yourself. they're afraid of the world, so you have to be too. you don't know how the world works because your parents never let you learn. and any inquiry about independence is a slap in their face that ended you up here. -reserved by me!-

neglected : you know the drill. you stopped asking for things a long time ago. you have to look out for yourself. no one else will for you. there were times where you wanted that connection. that bond. but they couldn't give it to you. more like they didn't really try to. and after stepping up for yourself for once, they decided you needed some correction.

force fame : you were latently talented from a young age. or your parents made you think you were, that is. in order to find your success, you were sold to the wolves. you needed to look a certain way. act a certain way. eat a certain way. talk a certain way. your identity wasn't your own because it belonged to the public. your parents didn't see what they were doing to you, thinking that your future was being carved for the better.

appearance obsessed : perhaps you belong to a family of prominence and wealth. a family of high prestige. what does this mean for you? well, everything you do needs to be cautiously considered. the reputation of your household depends on it. don't be selfish, right? you need to make them look good. even at the cost of your own joy.

adoptive : it was hard losing your parents. it was even harder going to strangers who treat you in a less than honorable way. but question their 'generosity', and you look like the worst kid on the planet.

ridiculous expectations : you were a pretty bright one from the start. honor roll, gifted classes, excellent grades, the works. but unfortunately, it quickly stopped being praised and started becoming expected. the older you got, the harder it was to maintain these expectations. no matter what you do, there's always something you could have done better. your parents are geniuses. if it was easy for them, then you have no excuse.

physical abuse : they hurt you time and time again. covering up became an area of expertise, and so did lying. at this point, you don't know if you deserve the treatment they give. it's hard to keep your head on straight dealing with all of this damn violence. sometimes you think it might be warranted. other times, all you did was take a step too loudly. walking on eggshells doesn't begin to describe it.

favoritism : your siblings always made sure you drew the short stick. your parents didn't interfere, either. for one reason or another, you never make your parents as happy as they do. and honestly, theydon't really try to hide it.
