#BlackLivesMatter
- In the liminal narrative space that is the universally beloved beach-themed filler episode, our heroes relax and enjoy a vacation they neither earned nor deserve. In fact, you might even say they were hired to have fun – hired by proxy, rather.
Two weeks ago
“Make sure you pass these out to all your friends,” the letter said, signed in lurid purple ink and addressed to Eden Trammel. The box contained a stack of invitations to Paradise, a free week-long vacation. They smelled faintly of expensive perfume, the kind only old rich women wear.
“Bring sunscreen. Hope to see you again at Easter. XOXO.”
Today
Welcome to Paradise, a private island owned by Demeter Green; CEO of the Genesis Corporation, a questionably associated relative of the Trammels, and trolling competitor to Fenrir Robotics. The sun is high, the sky is blue, the sea is warm, and there’s not a single Knight or escaped felon in sight. Truly, this is bliss.
On Demeter’s desk, her computer screen flickered as a few emails came in.
“Dear Dr. Green: Thank you for your generous donation to Mercy Medical Center. Would you prefer a private or public dedication ceremony?” R. Gallagher
“Debt repaid. Lawyers won’t be a problem anymore. Big things ahead.” -snake-eyes
“I know what you’re up to.” -G.E.
Smiling, the old woman responded to the third email.
“Prove it. -Matron”
Outside, she heard what she imagined to be the delighted screaming. It could have been horrified screaming, really, they sound almost the same to her.
"Susan, go greet our guests... I imagine some of them might be seasick."
Dr. Green, better known by her old Commonwealth codename "Matron", is an ominous figure in modern history. Her superpower is simply an extended lifespan - she just turned 120, and doctors thinks she's got a few more decades in her still... Hopefully less. Many of the inhumane experiments carried out under the Librarian were her design, but don't let that taint your image of her. She is simply a tragic figure, a twelve-time widow who came by her wealth through hard work and unfortunate circumstances. All she wants to do is petition the federal government to reinstate her citizenship so that she can visit her beloved grandson (great-grandson?) Eden up in Baltimore.
A decrepit, outdated, four foot tall robot on treads, Susan is Matron's lab assistant, favored test subject, and now wears the hat of concierge for the guests from Facility 108. Susan was once a military mine-sniffing robot deployed in the Middle East, but has since been stripped of all his (yes, his) weaponry and military-grade protocols. Arguably, he is more dangerous without them, as one of the subroutines was labeled "commonSense.exe".
Skittles is a cute and cuddly mutant sea creature of monstrous proportions, who may or may not know the taste of human flesh. Skittles is also the reason that Matron is no longer allowed to enter the United States of America, and the reason that Commonwealth now [REDACTED] animals [REDACTED] super gene. Provided that no one strays too far into deep water, you will likely never even know Skittles is there! At least, not until the full moon.
Paradise Island’s main allure is that it is an island, and therefore has a beach. It’s a very lovely beach too, with clear water that you can see your feet in when you go wading. Because the owner, Matron, is no longer allowed to step foot on American soil, she lives out here, frequently inviting friends, family, clients, and lovers that mysteriously go missing to this beautiful tropical paradise. Do not swim into the deep ocean.
A few times a year, Matron will host vacations for her fellow scientists across the globe. These guesthouses are where they stay. They are modularly built, so each house is identical to the next, aside from variations in layout and décor. There are four beds to a house, with a bathroom and a kitchenette. Group meals are served family-style in the main hall further up the beach. There is nothing in these guest houses that will kill you, unless you are allergic to pollen.
An eyesore on an otherwise beautiful island, the “Bunker” is a small, brutal-looking laboratory sitting under a massive mushroom-shaped satellite dish used for global communications. No one is allowed inside the laboratory. However, guests are permitted to approach the dish as necessary if they are having internet or cell phone reception issues.- Each of the guesthouses follows approximately the same layout, and has four beds - two sets of bunk beds.
