The Duchy Capital City: Aslan - Front Gates

KgmtMGr.jpg

This chapter of Isekai Hell will find the group of Regula (smith and adventurer), Aria (peasant and local hero), and Nozomi (farmer) in a group, joining others in a race to fulfill Regula's current desire: find proof of her noble lineage. For years, the proof has remained buried and perhaps not just by chance. To ascertain the truth of things, Regula has asked many to assister her in looking into the rumors that Diviners in The Duchy may be able to finally shed light on the situation. They were far removed from the politics of Ryke and were some of the most capable magic users in the continent. With little to lose, preparations began.

For one reason or another, perhaps lacking funds or standing, Regula and team did not Portal to Aslan directly. They instead spent at least the final leg of their journey on foot. They passed many interesting curiosities on their way into the city that seemed to grow larger and larger as they drew closer. They roads repairing themselves, clearly enchanted with some magic. They saw eternal flames that floated in place to give travelers light or warmth without burning. They saw all manner of races, both human, demi-human, and other coming up and down the wide path to the city. They also saw airships overhead and in relatively frequent numbers. More so than Ryken, at least. Closer to the city still, they saw statues of great magic users and powerful mystical beasts on display. Self repairing, self cleaning, and animated to a degree, they were a spectacle to all. You could not help but marvel at the size and magical ingenuity.

The party finally arrived at the outer wall to the city. A massive blue barrier shimmered in the mid-morning sun around the entire city. A large line was formed of travelers waiting to get into the city. Passing through the barrier one at a time, guests to the city were seemingly checked for monster or criminal titles. On one occasion, while waiting, it became clear what happened if one was not welcomed into the city. The barrier turned a distinct, solid red color and prevented clear visual beyond the barrier. Heavy thumping, the grind of stone, the whine of some inhuman process, followed by an explosion and partial scream. Almost as soon as the incident had occurred, it was resolved. The barrier turned blue again to reveal the interior. Massive footprints dotted the paved walkway and a spot further along the path that was nothing by charred black, pile of dust blowing away in the breeze was all that was left. Soon the pavement would repair itself and the charred remains of what tried to pass into the city would be faded memory. Seemed like the massive statues lining the path into the city were more than just decoration.

The Rp will begin with Regula and party getting ready for their turn to pass the blue barrier and to enter the city beyond. They could make out its massive size and scope from the gate before them. No reason to be nervous. Probably.

Regula had been positively shocked at the amount of people willing to aid her in her quest to find proof of her noble lineage. Sure, she somewhat expected Aria and Pierre to join in, perhaps also Michael, but to hear that even some random strangers were up for it and that they had gathered enough people willing to aid her to form separate groups for the task was a little overwhelming. She figured she'd best focus on those in her own group for now. The long walk into the city had at least given them an opportunity to get somewhat acquainted, but that wasn't enough. She wanted good friends and loyal allies, not just acquaintances.

All things considered, Regula was in a pretty great mood already. After all, she'd gotten a friend, Aria, to chat with during the journey and was confident she'd hit it off with her friend-to-be, Nozomi. If anything, they were already well into sight-seeing as they approached the city. “This place is really out there, isn't it? I mean, the roads are actually repairing themselves, just look at it!” Even as an adult, all this stuff forced out some childlike amazement and wonder. “Or those animated statues~ Imagine one of those things wandering into a war! They'd probably be able to wipe the floor with entire armies. If I wasn't coming here for a Diviner, I'd be here to learn some new enchantments for my gun. Perhaps we'll even get some statues of our own one day~”

A shadow passed along the ground, which made Regula stop in her tracks and look up for the dozenth time. The airships kept fascinating her, especially the amount of them here. She'd already heard some things about them in Ryken and saw some from a far distance, but she'd always just pushed it to the back of her mind. Now that they were so much more present here, she got to fully take them in, in all their splendour. “Come to think of it, we should try getting a ride on one of those airships on our way back. Wouldn't that be awesome?”

She could already imagine what it'd be like to be up in the sky. She never imagined simple people conquering the skies to be possible, yet there they were. Each and every time an airship flew by, she just had to stand still and stare at it for a moment. “I never in my life would've imagined it'd be possible for people to just conquer the skies like that. It was always God and the birds that ruled over there, but no more, now it's also people that freely traversing it.”

When they finally reached the blue barrier Regula stood still for a second. “Wow, that's one way to keep the monsters and criminals out...” She shivered. “Getting crushed and burned by giant statues and having your ashes be cleaned away by magic pavements. I could think of better ways to go.” She was confident that none of them had any titles that'd set off these alarms, but there was one thing gnawing in the back of her mind. “Let's hope it's a system that can't easily be tempered with.” With that ominous and perhaps red-flag inducing statement made, she got in line with the other people.

Aria, now with change of direction, was no longer wandering about the world. Now down to her last rykes, with nothing to her name but the clothes in her back, a sword and a sharp dagger. She walked beside Regula, her friend and smithy who mentioned over a hearty feast of rabbit stew and freshly brewed ale about diviner’s in Aslan. Upon mention of a possible connection to queendom, Aria was taken aback. She didn’t say much due to the sheer astonishment of the news but if what she said was true it would change just about everything. Not to mention the doubt or even resistance from the current king and nobles. Regula would need allies, perhaps even Arias aspirations would be furthered.

The humble warrior would look in equal amazement at the technological advancements that seemingly became part of everyday life in this new city. Who would think a simple barmaid would ever be so far away from home, helping what she was beginning to believe would be the rightful queen of Ryken. The diversity in people was also something Aria never experienced. Even frowning when she couldn’t afford to purchase an exquisite cloak from what she could only describe as a peddling cat person.

“Can you believe this?!” She said out loud, not hiding her bewilderment at Regulas mention of the self repairing roads. “Whatever magic is in place here is definitely the handiwork of powerful people. Back home, you needed a village's worth of labor to come together to repair roads.”

Her eyes widened at the flying ships above, resisting the temptation to move away from under their shadows. Everything was so otherworldly for her simple psyche, she felt the sudden need to adapt to this changed environment and to update her world view. If powerful magic like this existed for transportation, she could only imagine what means of destruction this kingdom had at its disposal.

Her thoughts solidified at Regulas mention of the stone gargoyle guardians laying waste to entire armies. She found it hard to believe but made note to study what military capabilities were possible here, if ever possible.

A stern look enveloped her features, “This is certainly such a different world, it’s hard to believe this kingdom exists within proximity of Ryken. Let’s hope things between our nations remain peaceful.”

Her attention was then violently ripped away from the statues towards the entrance barrier which lit up bright red, she took a few steps back as whoever or whatever was burned to ashes. She brought her arms close to her chest as she winced. “Gods..” she gasped, then looked at Regula. “..tampered with!?” She exclaimed. “Doesn’t seem like this.. defense mechanism accepts last requests either.” She remarked with a tinge of sarcasm as she observed how the ashes were swiped clean from the ground. She then hesitantly got in line with Regula and waited for their turn.

When Regula and party got to the head of the line, which was moving reasonably well, they saw a greeter who validated guests before they entered. He stood on the inside of the blue barrier and spoke through it.

"Good morning, ladies. Your reason for visiting Aslan: business or pleasure?"

His voice was smooth, natural, and masculine. The small smile he wore seemed genuine and his glowing eyes seemed utterly inhuman and most attentive. Well dressed and composed, the gateman did not seem weary or apathetic of his job in the least and he already had spoken with at least 100 groups that morning already. The previous group that went through kept looking back at the man even after they passed. Like the blue wall, the man was similarly ethereal in that he gave off an air of magic and otherworldliness.

In the distance behind the girls, a dust trail was getting kicked up by something moving rapidly toward the gate. It was far enough no sounds accompanied it, but a whisper started to move through the line as people in the back took notice first and became curious. A subtle tremor started to be felt through the paved road.

Regula was a bit surprised to see the 'automated' system still had someone manually checking everyone, but was quick to cheerfully reply. “Good morning to you as well, sir.” She had to think a second about his question. “Both, we're looking for a diviner and might do some sightseeing while at it~” She had no clue what the different options entailed, so she figured she might as well be honest about it.

She was distracted by whatever was inbound, as she turned to look at it along with the others. She managed to stop herself from reaching for her gun, as that'd probably look way too much like she was planning to stir up trouble. “Are you expecting any unusual guests perhaps, or should I brace myself for something?” She asked the greeter, half jokingly, half serious and altogether a little insecure and confused.

Ignoring Regula's question or perhaps just not hearing it over the growing excitement in the air, the gateman asked a follow up question,

"Very good, Miss. How long do you and your party intend to stay and how many in your party? If there are any monsters in your party, under who's slave contract do they belong? If there are any criminals in your number, they will be required to pay the atonement tax,"

His words were rattled off smoothly with practice. They were neither rushed nor drawn out. It was as if he was completely oblivious or uninterested in the scene unfolding behind the line of Aslan visitors.

The growing dust cloud revealed a massive monster that looked like a centaur but resembled a lion more than a horse. It was barreling toward the crowd with spear weapon leveled. The creature was about 20ft tall and lightly shook the ground as it ran. It was then possible to make out the others of the same ilk in the background. A stampede of these beasts were nearly upon the gate.

Regula ignored the man, as whilst she wanted to be polite, the growing unrest was of a more pressing concern. Instead, she addressed Aria. “Should we engage them? They don't look too friendly. Let's at least get between them and these people in line, just in case. It's better to look foolish than standing by and risk a slaughter.”

She didn't expect the grand Magic Duchy to be completely defenceless, but she wasn't sure if their defences would cover the people waiting in line. Even the small, perhaps five percent chance, that the people here would be overrun by these guys, was a chance she wasn't willing to take. She'd rather wait in line all over again later and make a fool of herself by acting up needlessly. As such, she made her way to the back of the line, ready to intercept. On her way, however, she made sure to check the looks on the faces of these people. Were they anxious? Scared? Eager? Just curious? It'd tell her a lot about whether or not she was overacting. If she were to spot someone calm enough to look like they'd know what was going on, she'd ask them; “Is this going to resolve itself, or do I need to help out?”

She'd also try to discern if she could figure out if, for some really odd reason, these guys were just really eager to visit or if they were, as all things were pointing to what they seemed to be pointing at; a large scale attack on the Magic Duchy. In the back of her mind, there was also an ulterior motive. Even if her help wasn't needed, being able to test her new gun upgrades and showing off might be two really nice things to start off with.

She observed the gatekeeper with a fair degree of suspicion. It seemed if anyone was to get up in his face he wouldn’t blink. He appeared, mechanical, synthetic even. As far as she was concerned all the questions he was asking seemed personal, but she decided to play along. She blinked at Regula mentioning their intentions in Aslan, but considering the circumstances and seemingly strict regulations this city seemed to work under she felt it was likely for the best.

Thinking that there was possibly some kind of previous conflict that spurred the city to take action and screen people that entered their city she opened her mouth to speak, but her trail of thought was suddenly interrupted by a rumbling beneath her feet.
“What is that?” She said, not exactly alarmed but her solemn expression hid away her inner concern. The man didn’t help the uneasiness welling within her when he ignored Regulas question. Slowly breaking away from the gatekeeper's gaze, she then turned her attention towards Regula. “There’s something at work here, best we get into position.” She drew her sword somewhat hesitantly as she glanced behind her at the barrier, even in the face of wild and vicious looking beasts she reconsidered. Her hesitation stemmed from the surprise of the city's defenses not having been activated. Surely they would have by now. Right?

“If we can, let them make the first move, the last thing we want is to make it seem like we’re here to wage a battle. But all things considered, this does seem like a full on attack.”

She didn’t expect any help to come from the people in line, it was likely they would all disperse. But she decided to amplify Regulas voice. “Come! Form a line, anyone with weapons to the front!”

She looked on at the ferocious lion centaurs, determined and concentrated. Observing their movements as she slowly paced back away from them as her sword glistened with its shiny sheen.

Regula and Aria would find the crowd in various states of dismay and panic. Several of the ones more quick on their feet immediately started rushing the line to get to the barrier out of turn. Some started pushing and shoving which led to individuals getting knocked over. Some of the karts started to press forward despite there not being room. People were at risk of getting crushed or trampled and that didn't even take into account the giant lion men stampeding for them. The stinking odor of fear was strong in the air.

"Miss, I'm afraid we cannot complete your request for entry until you return to the front of the line,"

The gateman replied evenly despite the chaos mounting before him. His words, however, were in Regula's head. Glancing back to him at any point would reveal his eyes were beginning to glow with more intensity. The normal shade of red getting masked by the blue barrier made them appear as some form of neon violet. It intensified further as one of the lion men leaped to the front and was within striking range of Regula.

*snap*

An audible finger snap went out over the crowd. By the time Regular heard it, the Lion's massive spear turned into a sunflower plant. Any risk Regula had of being injured instantly disappeared as the plant went limp in the Lionman's hand. It looked dumbly at its weapon, the flower limply rocked back and forth. Several of the centaur lions behind the lead were experiencing similar difficulties with their gear that made them pause and wonder what was happening. Unfortunately, the panicked crowd was not aware of the shifting developments before trying to rush the barrier. As soon as the first group did, the barrier instantly turned a solid red and prevented additional entry. Those that couldn't move forward were then squeezed by those pressing in from behind. There would likely be some casualties. Similar sounds of screaming, stompings, and blasts of magic could be heard from beyond the barrier. Additionally, All the giant statues of former heroes, sages, and important people stood to attention and stared with blue eyes at the giant lion's that had slowed their approach. It was very clear that what happened next would depend on what the lions wished to do now that they only had their size to rely upon for dealing with any oppositions that may attempt to get in their way.

Regula clicked her tongue, upon seeing the chaos ensuing in the line. The telepathic message was only annoying her at this stage, so she tried to ignore it. It was only when she saw the massive spears (which she'd already been bracing against) turn into sunflowers that she knew where she and Aria should focus their attention. “It looks like someone or something has stopping these covered, let's try to see if we can save some folks from getting crushed or trampled!” She spoke whilst turning around and moving back towards the line.

She had full confidence in the fact that whomever could turn spears into sunflowers could follow-up and deal with these creatures (whether that trust was warranted or not), but she was concerned about the people in line. Although it might be wasted breath, she'd still try to make some difference. “Everyone, calm down, they're being taken care off!” A quick glance at the statues showed her what was about to happen if these beast-men didn't surrender.

Words alone wouldn't cut it, so she did her best to push through the line and pull out everyone that seemed to getting trampled and tried to help up those that had fallen. She wasn't all that concerned about herself, as she was sturdy enough and had good armour. There were some people that would be considerably more difficult to reach, however. “Can you teleport to the ones in the middle and pull them out somehow?” She asked Aria. Especially at the front of the line, it looked like people were at considerable risk. Even if Aria would just teleport atop their heads, she might be able to make a difference if she could somehow force them to disperse a little or convince them that the lions were taken care off.

She'd try to continue her 'rescue' efforts whilst attempt to snap people out of their panic every now and again. “They've already been stopped, look!” She'd point out every so often, hoping that slowly but steadily they'd be able to actually make a difference.

Aria

Aria flinched as the beast mens spears appeared to turn into sunflowers. Yet before she could even think about her next move the very people in line she had called out to help were shoving and pushing past her. “Hey! Ow! Watch it!" She quickly moved towards Regula who had been keeping the panicked crowd as safe as she could. “Okay, agreed!” She called as a panicked man crashed into Aria pushing her straight into Regula. It was like hitting a wall. Expected of the heavily armored markswoman.

She’d then push back against the crowd, a certain claustrophobic feeling seemed to start to make Aria begin to hyperventilate. But she did her best to keep the crowd that was forming around them at bay. It was futile, as more and more of them flooded towards the entrance. She’d turn her head towards Regula through the shouting, screaming and the general panic erupting in this panicked crowd. Unable to really express anything in her predicament she called back, “Right! Ill see what I can do!"

She looked towards the barrier before sheathing her sword and decided to climb atop the nearest larger looking person to get a better view of where she could warp to. After a bit of evaluation she suddenly teleported and reappeared sitting on an unfortunate man's shoulders balancing her weight as her legs did their best to hold on to his neck and her feet around his torso. She would cup her hands over her mouth, facing the crowd before pointing at the lion beasts. “Everyone! Look! They’ve been disarmed!” She then pointed at another beast creature. “That one is holding a sunflower! You’re all going to be okay there no need to panic!"

She looked down and noticed the man holding her up was not very pleased with having to carry her. Groaning in anguish as he held onto Arias thighs, another woman, whom appeared to possibly be his partner angrily yelled at the shield maiden, “Get off of him you lunatic!” Aria glanced at her blankly and shrugged, ignoring her as she nonchalantly rubbed the man's head, messing up his hair with a chuckle. “Oh come on, i'm not that heavy, you got this.”

She only hoped the crowd would relax enough to stop their mindless stampede towards the barrier. Surely they could expect the cities defenses to activate. And from what it seemed they were already beginning to. She looked out towards the beast men who appeared fairly surprised at their weapons turning to random objects. One of them even appeared to have a little broom in his hands.

Sage had been with the group, watching the lions approach from the distance. When he had seen them running towards them, rather than the fearful response of most others, he had a giddy excited look, eagerly beginning to unsheath his Zweihander, getting ready for another battle to satisfy his want to fight, before he saw the countermeasures come into play, frowning as he placed it back in the sheath. He was floating above everyone to keep himself out of the way, holding his Zweihander close as his big blue butterfly wings fluttered in the air above the group. "Awww. It's no fun fighting them when they don't have their weapons. It'd be too easy." He huffed, holding his sword up.

Realizing that he should probably try to help everyone calm down, he flew overhead, trying to yell at the crowds as best he could to tell them everything was okay.
"It's okay everyone! They don't have weapons anymore! They can't get through the barrier! Just calm down and look!" He called out, doing the best he could to help, though it's not likely many would listen to the voice of a child, especially when it was coming from what looked like a flying sword with butterfly wings.

The efforts to drag some people out of tight or dangerous situations was moderately successful. However, the shouting to calm down did little but add to the cacauphony of voices. As Aria stated, the man could handle Aria fine enough. She was smaller than his wife. After the initial indignation from behind used like a stool, the man warmed up to his position. His wife's shrewd eyes didn't miss a beat and began smacking the man and Aria in equal measure.

"Damn, Hussy! Get off my Thomas!"

The man started to dance away, not wishing to get beat anymore while his wife gave chase. He'd be forced to take Aria with him unless she warped/dismounted.

Meanwhile, the Lions roared angrily. Their loud cries could be heard for miles around. But they did not advance. One Lion offered his flower to his comrade. She angrily swatted it down and it joined the dozens of other flowers that the lions tossed before they galloped away from the city. Back into the wilderness from whence they came, the lions disappeared in a cloud of dust. The crowd didn't properly breathe a sigh of relief until the rumbling in the ground had stopped.

With the menace gone, the crowd of visitors slowly picked themselves back up and started reforming the line. There were disputes, but none so loud or long that it would rouse the decorative statues which proved to actually be defensive magic golems. Of those decently placed in the line was one middling gentlemen in nice cut attire. Regula had managed to yank him out of the path of a panicked horse in time to avoid a real headache. He offered Regula and her comrades a deal.

"Thank you very much, miss, for your kindness and bravery this day. I wish to repay you, if you'd allow me to. I'm one Barthalemu Mathers of the Mather's Company. We deal in a variety of things, but to the point: I get special privileges as a wealthy merchant. For example, getting ahead of most of this line. If you'd like, you and your party may enter the city as part of my group and not wait through the whole line again. What do you say?"

The older man sat at the lead of one of the wagons in his party. He had a few attendants and guards for his wagons. Most of the cargo was boxed or tarp covered. Should the group refuse his offer, they would likely have to wait hours to get back to the front of the line.

Aria paid no heed to the ladies' tantrum, after all she was helping this crowd to remain calm. it’s not like she had any interest in this lady's husband. As if.

She suddenly spots what appears to be a flying sword; a giant sword. Aria would scratch her head in disbelief, noticing the tiny butterfly wings fluttering about at its hilt. “Huh? What is that?” She said out loud. She could vaguely make out its little voice, but it was impossible to decipher through the terrified crowd of people. It looked like a fairy.

Before Aria could inspect this flying blade further however, she suddenly turned to look at the woman below her, now beginning to get offensive. Holding up a lecturing finger Aria gave a serious expression. “Now, look here lady! I’m most definitely not a hus-“. But was rudely interrupted as a mighty slap headed towards her face, she leaned back suddenly, dodging the slap with a gasp. Thomas wasn’t so lucky, but suddenly appeared to explode with joy as he jumped and danced away from his wife. Aria yelped and held onto his face for a moment as he stormed off. “Wh- what are you doing?!” She exclaimed as she spun atop the overjoyed man. "AHHH!!

“I’m the luckiest man alive!!” He exclaimed with a giant ecstatic grin, on the brink of tears.

Aria suddenly felt really embarrassed and wasted no time teleporting off of Thomas’s back. Quickly fixing up her uniform and hair she cleared her throat hoping no one noticed before nervously turning around. The ground then began to shake as the stampede of beast men stormed off.

“W-wait! Thomas called after her. “W-what is your n-“ Aria quickly turned around with a snappy glare. “Excuse me sir, but you have the wrong idea. I just wanted to get a better look at the crowd to calm everyone down and you seemed like the tallest one there. So, goodbye and good day. Hmph!” Giving him a military salute she turned around once again. “Besides, you’re married.” she said before walking off, chin up high.

As Aria sifted through the crowd of various types of people she finally found Regula who happened to be speaking to an older gentleman. She approached them, catching a bit of the conversation. It seemed this man was willing to get them through the gate. “Sounds like a great idea...” She said, nudging Regula with her elbow. ”..I say we take him up on it.” She looked at the older man with an aura of gratitude for the offer. “Well met. Aria Barlow at your service.” Before she could bow or salute however, a shadow the shape of a sword was casted from above her. She looked up and there it was again: the fairy sword. It seemed lost or confused so Aria waved her arms. “Hey! Over here!”

She then leaned into Regula, close enough for her to hear a whisper. "Have you ever seen something so tiny carry such a massive sword?"

Regula

Regula hadn't even felt Aria crash into her, as she was focussed on figuring out how to make this end without casualties. Aria was aiding in her own, unique way. Regula wasn't entirely sure how much the circus-act aided their endeavours, but perhaps it'd get people to stop panicking for just long enough to notice there was nothing left to panic about. She didn't instantly spot the fairy aiding them as well, as he wasn't trying to use his tiny form and massive strength to selectively pull out people from the crowd that were at risk of being squashed or trampled, but at least he wasn't merely sitting by and enjoying the show whilst people were at risk of being trampled to death. That'd have made for an awful fist impression.

Regula was a little surprised when the beastmen gave up. “Smarter than they look...” She mumbled, as she watched them retreat. Upon quickly confirming there was no more panic and her aid was no longer needed, she spotted a man running off with Aria. It was... a strange sight all around. Her desire to yell for him to bring her knight back to her was about as big as her desire to witness the odd spectacle for a little longer. That said, Aria got off before it could escalate any further. Regula couldn't help but tease Aria a little upon her return. “Seems like you've been having fun~”

She then turned to the merchant, who had given her quite the offer in exchange for saving him. She agreed with Aria, it was a great idea. “That would be great, thank you very much, sir. I'm Regula, a blacksmith and enchanter.” She figured she might as well see how far his gratitude extended and check if she could gather some information. “Say, would you happen to know of any reputable diviners?”

Regula watched as Aria waved over the fairy, after which she whispered to her. “No, at first I thought it was just a sword with tiny wings. Some sort of living weapon or something...” Regula whispered back.

There was also another thing that Regula wished to talk about. “By the way, that man from before, the one beyond barrier. Is it just me or is there something really weird about him? His reactions barely felt human. He was just telling me to get back in line when those beastmen caused a panic, as if nothing was going on, and it was said directly into my head somehow. It was pretty unnerving.”

Sage saw Aria waving her arms down beneath him, glad that the panic stopped. He looked over the crowd as they argued of who was where, hugging the hilt of his sword a little before looking down towards the girl calling out to him, fluttering down towards her. When he arrived towards her, he smiled towards the group, planting his sword down in the ground with a small thud, sitting down on the hand guard. "Oooh! Hi there!" He greeted, smiling at the women from his sword, as he was actually higher than they were because of the sword itself being 10 feet tall. "Ooh, you're the lady who was riding that one guy! That looked like fun." He said, realizing where he recognized Aria from. He then turned a moment, raising his eyebrow at Regula, before taking out a comically large photo from his pocket, looking at her. "Oh! And you're the lady I was sent here to help! Ms. Regula I think?" He said, looking towards her.
"My name's Sage. I'm a fairy from the adventurers guild." He introduced himself, moving his head quite a bit to look at everyone with the only eye he had, the wooden bark on his face covering around 30% of his face centered on his left eye. He was also missing a leg, on the same side of his body. "What're your names?" He asked, wanting to get his introductions done, looking over the two girls and the merchant they were talking with.

He had seen the man at the front of the barrier, and had simply thought he was a really human looking golem or something. Cuz he didn't act like he was human, he acted like some kind of super butler. Sage was kind of sad the lions gave up, wishing he would have gotten some kind of fight out of them. How else was he supposed to get strong?

Aria looked a bit nervous, looking at the crowd periodically to make sure she wasn’t followed any further. After looking around yet again her eyes locked with Regula’s as she remarked on the theatrics just moments before. How did she know what happened? How much did she see?! Her face grew hot. “Fun? I-it was nothing.. i..” her eyes trying desperately to look away. But Regulas gaze felt like it was burning through her like hot coals in a baby blanket. As far as Aria was concerned it was an embarrassing move. Hopefully it won't come back to haunt her.

To Arias relief, Regula was a woman of duty and she didn’t seem to press the matter further as her attention shifted towards the merchant. Asking him about a diviner. Which surely the merchant must know about, he appeared to frequent this city often, to the point he knew the ins and outs of the barrier.

When Regula whispered back, Aria was waving down the fairy. She nodded, her gaze still upon the floating sword that was approaching. But when she mentioned the bit about the gatekeeper her head turned to face her. Obviously displeased for her at the bit about telepathy. “Really? You heard him in your head? Well, if you ask me he was definitely a creep..” she started as she crossed her arms looking towards the gate. “..I gave him a really good look before helping with the crowd back there. The guy didn’t even flinch. Come to think of it..” her index finger coming up to her chin as she pondered out loud. “..I don’t think he even blinked!”

She sighed quickly looking back at Regula, “Lets just do what we came here for, Aslan is such a different place, but it’s not immune to creepers among their ranks.”

Just then the fairy boy had been fluttering its little wings down to them, with his giant sword in tow. It was actually a bit astonishing. Aria shifted her gaze up to look at him, her hand over her eyes to avert the sunlight. His little voice was kind of cute to her before he mentioned the bit about her mounted atop of a man. She blushed furiously this time. Unable to contain her embarrassment she covered her face. “I did not ride him! I was using him as a stool!” She said weakly. She didn’t want to make it a big deal, but she was dreadfully embarrassed. Not knowing how much either of them had seen was just too much.

After a further exchange of words, and details about how the fairy got to be here, Sage told them his name. “Certainly! I am Aria Barlowe. Pleased to meet you Sage.” Aria cleared her throat. “If I may be so bold master fairy, why are you missing a leg and an eye?”

Regula was happy to greet the newest person to join her in her quest. “That's correct.” She confirmed in response to his question. It was a little odd that he asked them for their names directly afterwards. Perhaps he was asking for her non-existent surname? “It's just Regula, blacksmith, enchanter and also with the adventurer's guild since a few days ago. I'll be looking forwards to working with you~” As odd as the fairy was, with part of him being made out of wood somehow, his very disproportional strength was clear to witness, so he'd likely be a useful ally. She was also curious to learn of Sage's missing parts, but wasn't as bold as Aria to directly ask about.

Meanwhile, Aria's embarrassment was totally adorable and made Regula want to tease her more. It's why she couldn't help but delivering the final blow after Sage made her blush all over again. “I'm not too sure Aria, it really felt like my first knight was riding off into a new adventure without me, you nearly broke my heart~”

Sparing Aria from a complete social death, she went back to the more serious topic. “You're right, though, about the guy behind the barrier. The more I think about it, the less human he seems... that kind-off makes me wonder. Do you think he could be like those statues, just really advanced? With the crazy things I've seen already in this short time we've been here, it wouldn't be too far-fetched.”

Sage listened to the introductions of the girls, smiling at them as he swung his leg softly, like a kid on a swing. He smiled as he managed to find his current employer rather easily, giving a big thumbs up. "It's nice to meet you Miss Aria! And I'm glad I found you Regula, this town is really big." He said with a small smile on his face, moving his seat from the hand guard to the Crescent Guard, so he was a bit closer to them. "Well, that's mean, people shouldn't be used as stools." He added with a small frown, before looking over the two girls.

"Oh, the butler guy? He's a golem." Sage said with complete certainty, thinking that no living person would be that mono-tone, and after his experience with Fakelow, he simply assumed things that looked like people but didn't show emotion were fake. He had not appraised the butler man yet, but that was just what he assumed and was so sure of he said it matter of factly. "I mean, no real person would just act like they don't feel anything." He said, putting his hands at his sides.

When Aria looked to him and asked about his leg and eye, he gave a small shrug and smile.
"Oh, these? Well, when I was coming here from Ryke, I got lost in the woods. And then I stumbled into like this really pretty part of the forest with trees as big as castles, and I got pulled into a scary part of the woods by this reaaalllly big god lady, and she told me that if I won her game, I could be stronger. And my dad taught me to never turn away from a challenge, so I took her up. But then after killing two monsters, her last winner came and beat me, and she cut off my leg. Then the god lady came and stabbed my eye out with a jagged branch for losing, but now I have this really cool eyepatch! But anyways, now I'm trying to get stronger so I can come back and kill the lady who cut off my leg. But it's okay! I'm still here for the mission!" He explained as best he could, before turning to them with a big smile on his face.

"Can I join you guys in the merchant cart to go inside?" He asked, tilting his head at them He had overheard the merchant talking to them, and he wanted to stay with the group now that he had finally found them. However, when he thought a little bit, he wanted to ask another question. "How come you're so pretty miss aria?" He asked naively, before then giving a question to Regula. "I wanted to ask you that too. But also, how come we're looking for a fortune teller?"

TLDR: Regula, Sage, Aria occampany Mr. Mathers into Aslan
Post Listening:

The Duchy Capital City: Aslan

images

Mr. Mathers whipped the reins and sent the horses drawing the wagon forward after Regula and her people were ready to follow along or riding with him. They proceeded up to the gate where the same man in a dark suit waited for them. His eyes did not glow as intensely as they had before.

"Hello again, Gateman. I've returned to do business in the city for the next three days on behalf of the Mather's Company."

"Very good, Sir. A pleasure to see you again and in good health. Are there any in your retinue of monster or criminal title?"

"I don't believe so,"

Mr. Mathers said, this time less certain than the first, but still showing an air of confidence befitting the head of a financially successful company.

"Very well, Sir."

*snap*

Gateman snapped his fingers. This snap was not as audible or filled with intent as the previous snap that turned all the weapons into flowers, but it was a familiar sensation. The blue barrier then opened up enough to allow the wagons through.

"Please enjoy your stay. I look forward to our next meeting,"

Gateman said in parting as he gave a subtle lean and head bow before turning away from the wagons. Mr. Mathers nodded back and gave the horses another whip to send the wagons on a trot through. The barrier closed after they passed. Gateman was already quietly conversing with the next people in line. The wagon rolled on over perfectly paved and curated landscape into the city proper.

Buildings stacked on buildings towered into the sky and in-between them was a myriad of things and people to see. Flashy signs and illusions made of magic decorated most visible spaces. Water features were in every plaza and waterfalled down to lower layers of the city. As much as the city went into the sky, it also delved into the earth below. Despite being a city by the lake, the lower city was not flooded with water and was equally full of life. People and vehicles flew or hovered through the city. Escalators and magically propelled walk ways filled most streets. For streets that seemed to be perpetually in the shadow of larger buildings, magical lights shown night and day. The crowded space also smelled far cleaner and was much tidier than any city visited by the party thus far. There wasn't even litter that stuck around longer than a moment before someone or something came by to remove it. Mr.Mather's turned to Regula.

"Don't mind Gateman too much. He's not that different from most here who have dedicated their lives to the magical arts. All that mana changes a person, you see. Some go feral, losing their mind and sense. Become beasts or worse. Others can wind up like Gateman: losing a bit of their humanity. I hear he's quite the fellow at parties though."

Mr.Mathers chuckled at the thoughts and rumors he kept to himself as he steered the carriage on. The wagon's passed many a business, but none were the mather's company. After several minutes, the wagons pulled around back to a shop that didn't have its lights on. The front sign said "Mather's Magical Mysteries". It was a naming scheme several of the shops seemed to use. Wasn't clear if it was for the tourists or truly how locals identified the shops they would like to visit.

1942410.jpg

The shop was part of a borough with several other shops. The enclosed space would allow visitors to quickly get a view of several shops at once and enter the establishments that peaked their curiosities the most. The air here smelt less clean than before and various fragrances were being put into the air for all manner of reasons: magical ceremonies, nasty smell cover up, desirable effects. Noise of the city beyond was also stifled here except for one scream that echoed down one of the larger streets leading into the borough. A crowd was gathering around a woman.

From the Mather's shop, she was still a ways out, but she was clearly in distress. It looked like she was bound to a pillory and was likely soon to receive some 'punishments' from the already riled up crowd.

"I'm innocent!"

She pleaded inbetween screams at anyone that approached her suddenly.

"Not another one,"

Mr Mather's said quietly, clearly pained by the spectacle before turning back to his shop. He would go about getting business up and running. The party were invited to join him for lunch if they were interested as he thanked them once again for saving his life. Party is free to move about as they please.

Aria was in such bad shape, and it didn’t help that Regula had delivered such a sharp remark. This one really made her spin, taking the bait. “I.. I wouldn’t t-think of it..” she started, in a futile attempt to regain composure. “..i-I’m.. my loyalty is impeccable! H-he was the one taking me away!” She stomped her foot, fighting away her blush. “Stop teasing me!” She begged as she pulled on her silver braid.

“Well, I don’t care..” she said, referring to Sage’s remark about using people as stools being mean, Aria would cross her arms, speaking with a slight air of entitlement. “..I did what I needed to help. People were being trampled and I needed a stool.” Shrugging as she looked away. "Hmph!"

Regula changed the topic once more as Arias deep embarrassment faded , hopefully for good as the aspiring queen expressed her concerns about the gatekeeper. Then pondering further at Sages mention of him being a golem. “I wouldn’t be surprised either..” she glanced up at the flying vehicles then back to both her friends. “..there’s just so much static magic at work here. Everything seems to take care of itself, perhaps he really is a golem.” She said looking towards the gate.

After getting into the wagon, Aria made herself as comfortable as she could while she listened to the fairy’s adventure story. She chuckled at Sage's dad's advice on mustering courage in the face of opposition. “That’s, remarkable..” She said after the stories end. “..more so, that you were able to get out alive! Surely a story I won’t forget, much less if I’m ever in a forest again.”

The wagon then stopped and she turned to look at the one named Gateman. She didn’t utter a word, but observed him closely as a suspicious look enveloped Arias' features. She gasped softly when he snapped his fingers. Then tilted her head when he bowed and let them through. She almost expected them to be detained or at least questioned, but that didn’t happen.

Aria let out an audible sigh of relief, sitting back down. But before any remarks about Gateman could escape her lips her attention was magnetized to the impeccability of the city. There seemed to be lights everywhere, and flying seemed to be as common or more so than walking. The streets looked immaculate, due to some kind of sanitation spell and the efforts of the established infrastructure. For Arias simple folk mind, it was otherworldly. And to a degree somewhat intimidating considering how new and unknown this environment was proving to be. Although, she kept a sense duty that kept her anchored. Determined to help her friend Regula was her priority.

Then Sage inquired about how cute they were.

“Gee.. I don’t know, I suppose I’ve never thought of that..” she said impishly feigning ignorance. “..why are you so cute? With your little butterfly wings and tiny little eyepatch!” She said, suddenly pointing at the one eyed fairy. Aria then glanced at Regula, gesturing her eyebrows with playful disbelief at the fairy.

-----

After arriving to what appeared to be a shop area, Arias senses were piqued at the various lights, smells and general atmosphere. Everything was so well maintained and tidy. She nearly suggested that they do some exploring after such a long journey, when her attention was ripped towards a scream. Her bearing tensed as Aria peered across to observe a woman held in custody. After a few moments her eyes would turn towards Mr.Mathers. "What will they do with her?" She turned towards the other two however, not expecting the merchant to know much about the case before them. "Shall we get a closer look?"

Regula was a little surprised at how fun it was to tease Aria, but she allowed the girl a chance to recover. It'd be bad if she'd start critically injuring her own knights, after all, whether that be mental or physical. She listened to the fairy's odd story, but was unsure of what to make of it. There was one thing that she wanted to question. “You're the the type of person to take a leg for a leg, but instead to take a life for a list leg?” Although it was both a saying and a practice in this instance, she was surprised by how ruthless and vicious it was, especially as it was coming from something rather cute an innocent looking and sounding.

Regula decided to entirely ignore the part on her appearance, as it felt too tedious to deal with such a child-like question. Instead, she opted to correct the fairy on the second question. “I'm not looking for a fortune teller, I'm looking for a diviner. I need to clear up things from my past, or at least learn how I can do so.”

To Regula's surprise, the merchant didn't answer her question about diviners, the only thing she asked him directly, but instead chimed in on the talk she was having with Aria, about the border guy. For that manner, the fairy had chimed in as well, although for all his confidence, he was proven wrong by what the merchant told them. “Quite the fellow at parties..? I mean, he looks dashing enough, but he's a little creepy.” She couldn't quite believe this man to really be all that popular. That said, she was also surprised by the whole culture of giving up parts of someone's humanity and even risk becoming bestial for the sake of pursuing the arcana arts.

The thought about the Gateman was soon forgotten about, as she observed the incredible city they'd found themselves in. Her senses were overwhelmed by how much there was. The buildings were so high and the roads so many and... At some point, Regula just couldn't take it all in any-more, with how much there was to suddenly witness. By the time they arrived at the Mather's shop, she was left speechless by the scenery.

It was only when they heard someone cry out that Regula snapped back a bit. She wanted to question what was going on, but Aria managed to beat her to it. That said, she wasn't sure if they'd have enough time to wait on Mather to explain the situation, so she replied to Aria. “We should be weary not to get entangled into the juridical system here, but I don't with to forsake my morals either... Let's check one thing first.” Regula said, as she made her way through the crowd, shoving people aside if needed, until she was directly in front of the captured woman. She looked the women directly in the eyes and used [Appraisal D] to read her titles

Sage hummed as they responded to his story, nodding a little bit. "Yeah, the god lady Zylf said she saw potential in me, so she let me live, even though the other lady wanted to kill me for being weak." He explained in response to her saying he got out alive, nodding a little bit. He lightly tapped the bark on his face, feeling the knocking sound resound a little bit from how hard it was. He followed along with Aria, listening to her response and pouting a bit. "I'm not cute! I'm cool!" He protested childishly, hugging the hilt of his sword to keep his balance, his little butterfly wings fluttering behind him. He turned over towards Regula, humming a little bit.

"Well, it's not like she wouldn't deserve it. I'm sure she killed a lot of people before I came through. Plus, killing her is how I win the game and get to be stronger. Getting rid of a murderer is just an added bonus. And it's not like I'm not any better than her, the only things I've killed are Monsters." He said with a shrug of his shoulders, seeing nothing wrong with killing someone who killed a lot of other people. He listened up on her reasoning for why they were looking for a diviner. "Ooh, okay. Do you know where we should start Miss Regula?" He asked, before humming a bit. "With how big this place is, visitors must be really common, maybe there's like a visitor direction booth or something? I'm sure there must be a famous divine lady or something." He suggested on their cart ride, tilting his head at the two women, getting the title of what Regula was looking for wrong, assuming that Divine and Diviner were the same thing.

"Well, losing your humanity seems like a steep price. But I guess once you pay it, it's no cost at all, cuz you can't care anymore once you've lost it." The little fairy said in response to the mans statement of the cost of magic, still sitting on his sword in the carriage, humming in thought. He saw the store front, Ooh-ing in curiosity, wanting to check inside, but knowing he could only do that if Regula wanted to wait around.

Which was promptly not what was going to happen, since he saw her stepping towards the lady in the crowd, Sage getting worried a bit himself with how she shouted she was innocent, deciding to go appraise the woman himself.
"Excuse me, Miss Aria? Could you make sure no one steals my sword?" He asked, leaving the sword against the carriage, before flapping his wings, fluttering above the crowd towards the woman and using [Appraise C] on the supposedly guilty woman.

The Duchy Capital City: Aslan

1942410.jpg

Regula and Sage's appraisal returned much the same information. The woman that was bound was one Elizabeth Crowley. Titles included [Abuser], [Thief], [Vandal], [Fortune Teller]. Sage would also note the woman did possess some mental skills. They likely allowed her to fulfill her Job title. Neither of them could see her Intelligence grade though.

"Please Help me!"

The woman shouted again before turning to Regula and Sage directly. Her eyes sized them up much like they were doing to her. With a thousand yard stare that seemed to pierce right through the two, she called out to them, specifically,

"Regula! Sage! I call upon thee in my darkest hour. Defend my person for half an hour and I swear to you I'll get you what you seek. I promise I'm not the criminal they mark me to be and I can prove it too. Just give me the time I seek."

The woman seemed very sincere and serious. Her eyes were intense and did not waiver. Despite the crowd behind Regula and Sage, she seemed unusually certain in requesting their help. The woman was particularly beautiful and shapely. Despite her messed up hair and ruffled appearance, it was not hard to imagine what the crowd would do to someone like her if allowed. The young men in the crowd looked hungry. The women seemed malevolent. This young woman was too beautiful for her own good, but it there was something else present. Why were these people gathered here and so eager in the first place.

"Do not listen to that witch."

" She slanders the good name or Mage Doriel!"

"She nearly burned down his orphanage and assaulted several of the volunteer caretakers!"

"She coulda harmed the children."

"She deserves what's comin' to her!"

"Stand aside!"

The crowd started to surge and many were ready to push Regula and Sage aside if they did not move. Despite the magical nature of the city, no one was actively launching visible spells. A few city guards seemed to be posted around the plaza to ensure the criminal did not escape.

Regula was a bit surprised at the title collection this woman had gathered up. The fact that she called them by names suggested her [fortune teller] wasn't just for show either. The latter gave Regula a bit of an idea of what might be going on, which she shared with her two companions. “There is a small chance she acted based on the fortunes she predicted and got herself the criminal titles for it, but that's not something you can calmly explain to a crowd like this, especially as there's an even larger chance she's just fooling everyone, us included. Let's scan some titles of the people in this crowd as well. I'll handle the front-lines, Aria can handle the middle and Sage the backlines.”

Regula sighed, realising she wouldn't be able to hold back this crowd, so she'd have to improvise. She turned to the crowd and raised her voice. “I'll stand aside, but there's a small chance there's some truth to her words, so I'll step in the moment things get too violent or if they get sexual in nature. Also, you'd best make sure you don't have any criminal titles of your own, because my companions and I will be reading everyone's titles and we won't hesitate to knock you out cold before you can even get to her if you have a criminal or monster one.” She cracked her knuckles to show that the latter threat wasn't just one of words. If she was going to be the future queen, she'd best figure out how to get people to play by her rules early on.

With her rules laid out, it was now up to getting the crowd to play by them. She'd stay near the woman, close enough to intervene, but allowed the crowd to go ahead to some degree. Throwing rotten fruit or eggs at the woman, shaving off her hair, spitting on her and calling her names, the typical punishments Regula knew off, would be fair game, assuming they came from someone without a criminal or monster title. She would be at the ready step in and defend the woman the moment things got sexual or overly violent though. She'd also be eagerly reading everyone's tittles and hoping some [criminal] was stupid enough to intervene, as she was curious to see how much stronger she'd gotten and if she was able to knock someone out with a C grade strength punch to the temple yet.
