As We Knew It

The soldiers from the Rendel Empire didn’t march so much as lope, stumble, and lurch into the small town of Aedra, of the Findal Kingdom. They laughed, laughed as they torched buildings, laughed at the villagers’ fear as if they were animals, laughed as they tested their pretty new toys. They hadn’t expected anyone to fight back, and that was the biggest reason they were driven out. While the best of Rendel could mow through the whole town, poorly-prepared and drunken soldiers were an even match for angry peasants. It came down to luck, who favored the smallfolk.

Eventually. Many died before the soldiers turned tail and ran.

As fate would have it, the King’s illegitimate son resides quietly in this village on his realm’s border, and thus this massacre did not pass unnoticed. The Crown Prince has begun attacking the issue with vigor amidst Councilmembers, claiming that this was an act of war on Rendel’s part, and now is the time to act.

Many agree with him. Many do not. Many, it seems, would rather pretend it’s not happening at all.

But the King does pass orders for mobilization, and in truth it’s about time. This is not the first instance of border violence, and Findal’s soldiers have already learned not to wander too near the line. The higher-ups in the military have been requesting improved arms for years, those new-fangled guns like the Rendelese are toting, but Findal has too long prided itself on quaint ideals.

Still, things are changing, and the soldiers are going to see blood.

We’re fighting on three fronts. Some of us are trying to pick up the pieces, keep a community together when everything seems to be battering it apart. Some of us are just trying to make it through each day alive, between recon and harsh conditions and being shot at half the time. Some of us are playing the long game, trying to wrangle politics one way or the other - to prepare for this war, or else avoid it altogether. One thing’s for certain, though.

Life as we knew it is gone. And it’s not coming back.

Notes

This roleplay is an ambitious project, with three separate storylines and IC threads whose events all affect each-other. If your diplomat in the Capital convinces the King to scale back on military funding, hard times will fall on the soldiers in the field. If those soldiers’ Captain writes to the Capital for aid, there’s going to be a large amount of arguing over the issue. If the Council has a change of heart and increases firearm production, the residents of Aedra may have a thing or two to say about the factories encroaching on their farmland. And so on. Actions have far-reaching consequences, and characters’ understanding of their circumstances is limited. Furthermore, not all is as it seems, even now.

Should you decide you want to partake, please know that there will be rather a lot of reading involved. This is mostly due to the large scale and the amount of detail in the project. You must be willing to absorb all of this information - all of it is relevant.

While this is very much a thing that is going to happen, and soon, this thread is mostly for checking interest - I am not yet taking characters, or recruiting in earnest. But if you’d like to know when I am, or have a question about the world I’m building, I’d be quite happy to hear from you.

Why you gotta post good stuff while I'm sick, Dooskbutt.

Seems like it'll be an awesome roleplay! I'm down to join once you have the actual thread up!

I have one question though - you say the roleplay is low fantasy but you continuously refer to firearms and guns. Does this roleplay have elements of modern/futuristic warfare?

Mmmhmmm. The world has an enormous spectrum of technological development - it's one of the plot points. Magic has afforded some kingdoms the opportunity to maintain rather medieval levels of tech while other places have soldiered on to, not modern tech, but close in comparison. Maybe 'round... 1700s level? 1800s?

I'm still working out the kinks, so I appreciate questions and critiques immeasurably.

Magitech would be fun for your areas that moved on.

Shit I want to redo my old Aedras Ruin RP now.

The world was completely technologically advanced with lasers and plasma weapons.

BUT

Their culture was middle ages still. Laser bows, plasma halbards and swords. It was pretty cool in my own opinion.

Depends on the storyline.

One group will be the Division 5A Squad, part of the Findalian forces and what is colloquially referred to as the Rustcrust Army. Army structure being largely location-based, this Squad (of ten or so people) has a specialist or two, and is otherwise comprised of enlistees from Aedra and places near it.

Another group will be surviving residents of Aedra, generally. There's not a whole lot of restriction there, though it'll be more fun if people make characters that have important roles in town - mayor/mayoress, doctor, farmer, etc - rather than less involved sorts like storekeepers.

I tend to see a lot of storekeepers.

A third group will be politicians entirely - Councilmembers as they're called. They're a group of 20-ish wealthy and/or noble and/or otherwise noteworthy individuals that convene several times a week with each other, the King, and the Crown Prince to take care of affairs of the kingdom. One for each geographical area (not dissimilar to states).

While actual numbers will of course exceed this, I'll take no more than five characters for each group. Not sure if I'll take more as the roleplay gets going - depends on how hectic it turns out to be.

I will take care of all NPCs, rather than having a character of my own in the traditional sense. Not to say I don't have characters in mind, of course - you just don't get to know what they're thinking~.

@Ire asked if there would be races available besides humans - the answer is yes, one. A sort of shapeshifter... but they are incredibly rare, and humans are incredibly prejudiced against them. Especially in higher circles of society.

There's also another race - but it's an NPC race.

Haven't quite written it all up yet, but let's say glamours play a role.

that I am informed of this only now. simj is of much disappoint and sorrowing.

Tagging these people because 1) I trust their mad RP skillz and 2) I haven't heard their opinions on this and 3) I have no reason to believe they aren't too busy (at least once finals end).

@Sindy @Jaysun @Agent Nine @Sir Raime @Unwavering Knight @Keitsumah

Sorry if I missed anyone! I'm 100% sure I must have. There's so many great people here.

The text overlaps on my phone as well. But I could make it out.

Good gracious, Dusky. You are making me wish I had more time to play. Please tag me when it's ready. I have no idea if I'll have the bandwidth. In fact, I doubt I will. But I want to at least check.

Nope, not the phone; it's on my computer that it doesn't work >:

it probs won't work on my phone either.

O: BBcode why?! Give me a minute and I'll fix it. Won't look as pretty for me but at least it'll be legible!

I'm glad you like it, Erica. :D

Ooooh, I got a tag!

Gonna read up on this, but I'm betting it's brilliant, Dusk, and you can definitely count me in. |D

EDIT: Eeeeee! I love the whole "domino effect" thing. Kinda makes me think of GW2, in how most things you do have immediate consequences on the world around you...
