The soldiers from the Rendel Empire didn’t march so much as lope, stumble, and lurch into the small town of Aedra, of the Findal Kingdom. They laughed, laughed as they torched buildings, laughed at the villagers’ fear as if they were animals, laughed as they tested their pretty new toys. They hadn’t expected anyone to fight back, and that was the biggest reason they were driven out. While the best of Rendel could mow through the whole town, poorly-prepared and drunken soldiers were an even match for angry peasants. It came down to luck, who favored the smallfolk.
Eventually. Many died before the soldiers turned tail and ran.
As fate would have it, the King’s illegitimate son resides quietly in this village on his realm’s border, and thus this massacre did not pass unnoticed. The Crown Prince has begun attacking the issue with vigor amidst Councilmembers, claiming that this was an act of war on Rendel’s part, and now is the time to act.
Many agree with him. Many do not. Many, it seems, would rather pretend it’s not happening at all.
But the King does pass orders for mobilization, and in truth it’s about time. This is not the first instance of border violence, and Findal’s soldiers have already learned not to wander too near the line. The higher-ups in the military have been requesting improved arms for years, those new-fangled guns like the Rendelese are toting, but Findal has too long prided itself on quaint ideals.
Still, things are changing, and the soldiers are going to see blood.
We’re fighting on three fronts. Some of us are trying to pick up the pieces, keep a community together when everything seems to be battering it apart. Some of us are just trying to make it through each day alive, between recon and harsh conditions and being shot at half the time. Some of us are playing the long game, trying to wrangle politics one way or the other - to prepare for this war, or else avoid it altogether. One thing’s for certain, though.
Life as we knew it is gone. And it’s not coming back.
This roleplay is an ambitious project, with three separate storylines and IC threads whose events all affect each-other. If your diplomat in the Capital convinces the King to scale back on military funding, hard times will fall on the soldiers in the field. If those soldiers’ Captain writes to the Capital for aid, there’s going to be a large amount of arguing over the issue. If the Council has a change of heart and increases firearm production, the residents of Aedra may have a thing or two to say about the factories encroaching on their farmland. And so on. Actions have far-reaching consequences, and characters’ understanding of their circumstances is limited. Furthermore, not all is as it seems, even now.
Should you decide you want to partake, please know that there will be rather a lot of reading involved. This is mostly due to the large scale and the amount of detail in the project. You must be willing to absorb all of this information - all of it is relevant.
While this is very much a thing that is going to happen, and soon, this thread is mostly for checking interest - I am not yet taking characters, or recruiting in earnest. But if you’d like to know when I am, or have a question about the world I’m building, I’d be quite happy to hear from you.
