Sherwood Sherwood

I'll know more when I get home. Having just read through the main story, I have a better grasp on what kind of game this is. I probably should have done that first! Heh!

I have a basic background for my character, but there are a couple things I'd like to know for the sake of culture. I know this is a Robotech game, but do Bruce Lee and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exist? I would really rather my bear not be yet another Lynn Minmei fan (though a certain Garudan fan we have in the squad did a fantastic job of expressing his affection for the most popular singer in the whole universe - go Eon!).

I would like that my character is something ever reject even among the bear people and has thus, being educated in the fields of anthropology and archeology, embraced some human culture instead. Is that all right?
Yes, Bruce Lee and the Adolescent Radioactive Blackbelt Hamsters do exist. That is fine with me.

Once you have your sheet at least mostly done, I can introduce you to the story. I don't plan on any combat stuff for a bit, so you have some time before that.

That was the title of a spoof comic that came out in the 80's to make fun of the TMNT craze.

Its called being young at heart, I'll have you know! Now don't make me shake my cane at you, you young whippersnapper!

Oh, no. Don't call me grandpa. I'm not ready for that yet.

Thank you.

(My character: "They're not hamsters! They're amphibians!"

Me: "Pipe down there. He's allowing them, isn't he? Like Lee and similar masters, they are core to your background and future. Be appreciative, maybe?"

Him: "But what kind of game master doesn't know the difference between a mammal and an amphibian? I'm a scientist for goodness sakes!"

Me: "And a young one with one heck of a different background and personality than most bears. Just trust in him and enjoy the ride. He's allowing you, isn't he?"

Him: "That remains to be seen. He's probably going to just kick me down and out like all the others. Then I'll be stuck being all alone again. There's a reason I have to create my own company, y'know!"

Me: "Oh, I wouldn't be so confident about that. My buddy, Sherwood, knows the value of kindness and friendship. So do the others in this bunch. Have some faith, big fella. You'll see."

Him: "Humm. You... really... think so?"

Me: "If I didn't, I wouldn't be here creating you."

Him: "Yeah. Fair enough. All righty, let's do this!"

Me: "That's the spirit!")

Honor and fun,
Dann =)

Sherwood Sherwood Yeah, I think my (still currently nameless) bear's ability to perform robotics is out the window here. The only way I can get it is to take mecha engineering which I'm not about to do.

Also, I don't think I need Artificial Intelligence to do what he really wants to do (create computer programs that mimic people using a holographic projector, kind of like the holodeck in Star Trek: Next Generation and onward). Robotech uses that technology in communications, don't they?

What does he need for that? Computer Operations and Programming?

Sherwood Sherwood Are you going to be up for an hour or so? I've got a number of questions (some odd) I'd like to run by you.

Okies! Here we go:

I've tossed aside the idea of Robotics in part because I don't think I need it after all. While doing so, I noticed Eon's Onni has the Mecha Engineer MOS from the UEEF book. While playing T'kar, I had a serious problem with that very MOS (the MOS's name and purpose is Mecha Engineering - so why doesn't the Skill Mecha Engineering come with?).

Possible solution if you and Eon like it? In the Robotech Masters Sourcebook (page 41, physical copy), they have another list of MOSs, one of which is Mecha Engineer which includes the Mecha Engineering skill (at +20%)!

I don't know what Eon is going for with that MOS, but if he likes it and you allow it, maybe it's worth a swap? You seemed to be open to allowing MOSs from other books earlier?

I don't know how much Eon has played Robotech, but I'd hate for him to wind up in the mess I found myself in with T'kar. Unless I'm missing it, Onni lacks the Mecha Engineering skill. I don't want him (or anybody) choosing an MOS with something specific in mind, only for you to ask them to roll a Skill - they don't have! Urgh! =)

For the need of working on your Cyclones and Silverback, I don't think that you are going to need Mecha Engineering. The Cyclones and Silverback are not as complex as the larger mecha, making them easier to work on. We will leave it as is for now.

What Skill then is required for working on Cyclones and Silverbacks then?

Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Armorer and Weapons Engineer will cover it. Reflex System Mechanics would be a help for dealing with the power supply, but the rest of these skills can handle 95% of what you'll need.

Cool! Good to know!

Next set of questions: Is there a dedicated Weapons Specialist on the team (I don't know how your NPCs are set up, but as best as I can tell, the PCs don't have a dedicated Field Armorer)?

If not, could I take the Heavy Weapons Specialist from the Robotech Masters Sourcebook (page 40, physical copy)? (The UEEF book's "Heavy Infantry Weapons Specialist" is another creature entirely.)

Hmmm. In the UEEF Marines book there is the Basic Mecha Maintenance package, but it lacks some of the skills that the one in the Master's book does. What exactly are you looking for?

No, no. Not that one.

I'm looking to fill the role often filled in real SEAL teams - Weapons Specialist. This is the guy in the team who knows all the cool tricks about weapon maintenance, how to rig one's scopes, and how to give the team the edge in their firefights (this is often the guy in the team with the Squad Automatic Weapon ).

The combination of field armorer, weapon systems, and W.P.s makes him the one the team could come to to get more out of their guns. Plus, unlike the other MOSs, he'd be able to use those very same guns without question.

I also think this fits in with the background I have for my bear: He was a science guy. In typical military fashion and in desperate need of science-trained personnel on their front lines, they took one look at my bear and thought, "Hey! He's big! Let's use him!" They pulled him out of the lab, trained him to be a Silverback pilot, weapons specialist, and close combat jockey and poof! Here you go! A science guy ready to be inserted with any STORM team that happens to take him!
