I was going to use Levitate to protect their bodies with like 3000 pounds of rubble (6 500lb chunks of rock). It would also be awesome if he could transform into one of the metamorphose forms but that might constitute casting two spells at once.

Ohhh, yes, that will help. I'll say that if you do this, if explosion happens, Charon and Isa will both get advantage to rolling their saves against the explosion.
