Realistic or Modern Westbrook: On The Road (The First Official Spinoff)

Ash
Sassy Head Tilt.gif

"I'm not going in that water." Ash had told Colby as she came over to sit next to him on the pier. She looked down into the depths of the ice cold lake, but her towel was gone -- which was just another reason for Ash to not go into that water, under any circumstances. Nope. She was content to stay on the safety of the pier.

That is, until someone decided to shove her into the freezing cold water.

The shock of the cold water left her momentarily unable to breathe, which also wasn't the best thing when you were thrust under water. Ash tried to breathe in stupidly, but instead got a mouthful of water. Her eyes opened up and she blinked for a moment, lungs bursting from lack of oxygen. She tried to gain her bearings, and caught sight of her towel at the bottom of the lake, but that stupid fat fish was still next to it and... yeah, the fish could just have it.

She kicked for the surface, coughing up water and gasping for air. "Damn it, Noah." She sputtered, wiping the water from her eyes and pushing her hair back and out of her face. "That's it. We're playing that stupid chicken game. Get your partner, Noah, and get ready to be destroyed." Okay so chances were, she wouldn't actually win.

But that didn't mean Ash didn't want an excuse to drown Noah in the ice cold lake. She was already shivering a little bit, goosebumps popping up along her arms.

Colby almost called Ash a chicken for refusing to try swimming – it was her idea to swim in the first place. Before he could ask Noah who “her” was, he started losing balance on the edge again, and this time it was by freakin’ Noah. At least Colby felt slightly more used to the temperature on the second dip... wait, never mind. He couldn’t feel the difference. Cold was cold.

But just before slipping over the pier’s edge, Colby quickly reached around, grabbed the evil pusher’s leg, and let gravity do the rest of the work as he held on. Pay back, betch.

“How about, the loser gets gas for the next three stops?” Colby suggested, casually paddling backward towards Ash. Well, he assumed he would be Ash’s partner since Noah did them both wrong.

Damn it, Colby.

Noah had pushed Ash pretty easily, which wasn't surprising, seeing she was 5'2 and couldn't do much to stay on the pier. It was a bit surprising how easily he pushed Colby off the pier, but looking at the whole scene, that was probably thanks to the awesome surprise aspect Noah had while pushing the two into the cold lake. It's what they get for questioning his choices of leaving Ash's blue towel to the big fish on the bottom of the lake.

Thinking about it now, Noah didn't realize how scary being so deep actually was. If the water had been warmer, he would have had a freak out about the big ugly fish, but seeing he was shocked because of the water being so cold, he was actually pretty proud of himself and how he handled the whole situation.

His small but quick thought process about being so cool about the big ugly scary fish was interrupted by Colby's attempt to pull him into the water. Of course, Colby being extra like he always is, his attempt was mid-air, and, of course, Colby being a strong big boy, it was successful, so once again, Noah found himself submerged in the cold water.

This time, however, the shock wasn't as strong as it was the first time, and he didn't allow himself to sink very deep, swimming upwards very fast the first thought he had about the big fish.

Ash and Colby have already emerged from the water by the time Noah did. Ash said something about Noah needing to find his partner for the chicken game, and Noah knew exactly who he would pick. The new boy had been a new addition to the group, but Noah noticed that he was kind of strong-looking and that he would guarantee Noah a win at the chicken game.

"I love that idea, but are you sure you have enough money for that?" Noah asked, not expecting an answer before swimming to the pier. He had climbed up and ran/walked to where he last saw Hunter and Bella talking. He didn't want to bother them before because they seemed like they were having a moment, but right now, winning this chicken game was of higher importance.

"Get dressed, we're playing the chicken game," Noah said to Hunter. He looked at Bella for a second before speaking again. "You can be the judge if you'd like."

At least Colby had managed to get revenge on Noah for rudely shoving the two of them into the water. She glared over at Noah in the water, and kept glaring as he took off for the pier to go and get a partner. To be honest, this was a horrible bet -- Ash did not have enough money to pay for the next three stops, but whatever.

It would be alright. Maybe.

She watched as Noah went up to Bella and Hunter. Oh no. They were going to lose if Noah was asking Hunter, which she highly suspected he was. Fuck. There was no way that she could fight either one of those boys, unless she was like... super extremely lucky, which just unlikely. She let out a sigh, her attention turning back to Colby.

"Alright, dude. Let's go win." She said with a smile. Even if Ash was positive that they were going to lose, that didn't mean she couldn't act happy about it and keep some semblance of a positive attitude. At least for Colby. "The sooner we win, the sooner we can get out of this stupid water." By now, Ash had grown used to the water. Kind of. Basically, she was so cold now that she felt almost numb, although her teeth were chattering slightly, making it harder to talk.

Lake Michigan sucked.

Ash splashed some of the ice cold water at Colby, and then started to swim for the shore. Right now she couldn't touch, and Ash didn't think the boys could, either. Which meant that their war would have to occur closer to the shore.

Maybe it would be warmer.

Watching Noah run off to find a chicken partner, Colby exclaimed at him, “You should be asking yourself that, Stewart!” That question was not something Colby would, or should, answer out loud. It wouldn’t help his or Ash’s morale.

“Yeah, we totally got this,” he said to her. He was sure he lifted more than Noah and Hunter could combine – hopefully, his cockiness would secure them a win. “You got me below you for a sturdy foundation. I’ll hold onto you tight, don’t worry.”

Even after he said those assuring words, she still splashed freezing water on his face. What a jerk.

Following her near the shoreline, he felt a tiny change with the water temperature, but it still wasn’t quite warm. Like his blonde chicken fight partner, Colby was getting used to the water, gradually, and he could feel the comforting warmth of the sun still shining in the sky, even it was only on his face.

“So, you wanna practice hopping on my shoulders?”

Bella wasn't surprised when Hunter hid his phone screen and acted rather jumpy when she approached him, seeing as they didn't know each other at all. She was, however, rather impressed with the fact that he didn't just push her away the second she had approached him. Bella had wondered why Hunter ended up joining the crew since he didn't seem as outwardly troubled as Beck, though she knew he had to be running away from something, hell, they were all running away from something, but she knew better than to pry.

"I'm sorry things aren't going well for you. Hopefully joining us on the road will make things a little better, though I have to warn you, trouble seems to follow us wherever we go." Bella chuckled in an attempt at reassuring Hunter, not really knowing what else to say. "And don't worry about intruding or ruining anything, the more the merrier. Though if we pick up anyone else, the poor RV might explode. And yeah, I'm Bella Dupont, a pleasure to officially meet you."

Bella looked over as Noah approached them with the offer of a game of chicken. Bella nodded enthusiastically at the possibility of her judging. "You've got yourself a deal Noah as long as I can fight the losers." Bella said, pulling off her shawl and tossing it inside the RV. Walking over to the shoreline, Bella waved to Ash and Colby. "Good luck you two, I bet Noah and the newbie will put up a pretty good fight."

Hunter enjoyed Bella, she was sweet and not pushy which right now was a blessing for him. He felt bad for being as untrusting as he was but he had lost a lot of his trust and people and he wasn’t willing to give it out easily, so he was just cautious and secretive about what had led him on the trip. It was an adventure and maybe just maybe he would grow from it. He chuckled at her words, “I guess trouble isn’t a bad thing because you all seem pretty nice.” He was relieved that Bella introduced herself back and didn’t find it strange. At least he felt like he could possibly trust Bella a bit more, not enough to tell her about his family but more than he could some of the others. He wondered why she was also on a trip like this but just like her he wasn’t going to ask. Everyone seemed to have their reasons for being in the RV even if he didn’t understand it yet, or even if he ever would.

In that moment Noah had approached both of them, Noah was a bit surprised that he was being invited…well forced but semantics, into a game of chicken. It had been a long time since he had played but it would at least be fun and distracting for a bit. He smiled at Bella and then to Noah, “Alright, but I’m on top.” He joked and then made his way into the RV. He dug through his bag to pull out his blue swim trunks, change into them, and then make his way back out to the group. It looked like everyone was waiting on him, “Alright, I guess it times to battle it out.” He was a little nervous because he really didn’t know these people well and yet here, he was playing a game that friends usually played, and he didn’t quite consider these people friends just acquaintances that he was still getting to know. He hoped this game would at least bring him a little closer to everyone.

"Practice? Please, Colby, we don't need practice. We've got this."

They did not have this.

At least the water near the shore was a little warmer, and when she saw Noah approaching with Hunter and Bella, she almost forgot about the cold. Ash was ready for some friendly competition -- and when she heard Hunter announce that he was going to be the top, she found herself hoping that Noah would drop Hunter. It would be the easiest way to win.

"Bella, are you judging?" She had to be the judge. Why else would she willing come out into this ice cold death water? And if she was the judge, maybe she'd let Ash and Colby win since Ash and Bella were obviously really good friends. And they were sharing a bed in the RV, and Ash was not above shoving people out of beds at night in spite.

"Alright boys, are you ready to lose?" Ash teased Hunter and Noah with a smirk as she waded through the water closer to Colby, one of her hands touching his arm. "Colby and I have been playing this game for years together. We're like, unstoppable." So it wasn't a total lie. It wasn't her first time playing chicken with Colby as her partner, however Ash was horrible at this game. She was not good at shoving, or keeping her balance, and had only managed to win a couple times.

Maisie
tumblr_pipr88Wb941uz4mb8o8_r1_250.gif

Maisie was content on just staying in the RV. Maybe reading a book or sketching something cool... literally anything would've been better instead of putting up with Stu's attitude. Puberty wasn't a good look on the guy, before she could reply to him suddenly Beck was at her side. The brunette shook her head and held back a grateful smile. She wasn't sure why Beck was being so persistent with her, not that Maisie was complaining. But if they're still on that horror shtick. That meant Maisie's the target.

But was murder really her plan? Who really knows. It'll only be told with time.

"Woah, did you hear that Stu? I'm better than you." Yes, she was just trying to get under his skin. If he wanted to be rude, Maisie wasn't exactly incapable of reciprocating it. The trio walked along the promenade and Maisie took in the view. She wasn't new to traveling, being in the system was kind of like... 'oh this place didn't work out? Alright, time to be sent to some group home in Delaware.' But Maisie's never been in Chicago. It was nice, at least this part was. It was difficult to keep her mind from traveling to a certain someone. She wondered where they were, if they were okay.

She shook off the thoughts and focused on what they were here to get which was... what again?

"What are supposed to be getting anyway? Do we have a list?"

“Yeah, unstoppable,” Colby echoed, crossing his arms over his chest with confidence.

The last time she said “we got this” in a chicken fighting game, many years ago, they still lost. But he wasn’t going to mention it, certain that Ash would’ve remembered anyway. Well, Colby was taller and had more muscles on his arms now. Hopefully, those current qualities would be enough to help Ash stay up longer than five seconds. And she was on the cheerleading squad; she should’ve built some strength or better balance from it, right?

Dammit, West. They should've practiced earlier. Colby knew how terrible his blonde friend was at this game, and Noah might cheat somehow since he pushed them off the pier earlier.

Colby turned around, his back facing Ash for her to climb on his shoulders. He’d make sure to have a good grip on her wet knees. As long as she tried to lean more forward and not choke him, they would be fine.

Stu

DQu9F5R.gif

God, whoever invited this girl along? He didn't trust what's-her-name-Beck. He didn't trust people in general. He used to. But not since they slammed his face into sinks, or threw him into chairs. Not since Westbrook.

As far as travelling companions go, Maisie was not high up on his list of preferences. He didn't know much about her, but he'd known at least that she was close with Aaron -- the kid who had put a dent on his face.

The scars had thankfully faded, but if you scrutinised Stu's face hard enough you might still see them. Having Maisie there didn't help him forget what happened. The prickly feeling was probably mutual. He wouldn't be all that surprised that she harboured a dislike of him too, on account of what happened.

"Yeah," he replied to Maisie. "But at this point, who isn't?"

At least the one thing they had in common was that neither of them really knew Beck. And so at the very, very least they outnumbered her two to one, if she decided to turn into a serial killer or something. Like in one of those hitch-hiking horror flicks.

They made steady progress toward the seaside mall, which now panned into view. It was a perfectly mundane and normal-looking mall -- no glitz, no non-sense. It was the sort of place that attracted kidnappers and gang members alike. Hardly reassuring, but at least they wouldn't look too out-of-place given how scruffy they looked after a few days on the road.

As for the shopping list, yeah, there was a shopping list. Which Stu happily forgot and left on the table.

'Don't worry. I. . . I can remember,' he said.

He climbed up the steps and pushed through the huge glass door, leaning against it to hold it open for the two. For all his angst, it seemed Stu was still a proper English gentleman.

The mall had probably seen better days. It was pretty empty inside, with dusty floors and depressing elevator music which gave it a Dawn of the Dead kind of feel. His eyes scanned the shops, many with their rolling grilles drawn halfway down. To their left was a sorry-looking amusement arcade which might have excited his 10 year old self, but he didn't bat an eye now.

'This place makes me sad,' he said. Which was saying a lot, since he came from Chipping Campden, a town probably not even half the size of this mall.

Stepping into the water so that she was up to her mid thigh to get a better look at the pairs, Bella laughed at their taunts. Ash and Colby's teasing didn't exactly seem like it had any truthful foundation but perhaps they were going for the 'fake it until you make it' approach.

"Try to grip Colby tighter with your knees, Ash, or else you're going to slip off!" Bella called out over the sounds of the beach.

Bella decided to give the four a few moments to prepare themselves for what she could only imagine would be absolute chaos. She was happy that Hunter seemed to be getting more comfortable with the group. It would be hard to be in his situation, hopping in an RV on a roadtrip across the USA with a bunch of people that he didn't know. The whole thing was absolutely crazy but maybe that's why he was still with them seeing as all of the people from Westbrook were, in their own little ways, kind of crazy. What else would compel a bunch of teenagers to hop on an RV and go?

"I'm ready when you guys are," Bella said after a few minutes, her arms crossed over her bare stomach.

Noah

Noah couldn't say he was surprised that both Bella and Hunter agreed to play the chicken game seeing the two weren't actually doing anything nearly as fun as the stupid chicken game, or at least it didn't seem to Noah like they were doing anything which could be considered productive. Noah wouldn't ever admit it, but he was also kind of excited to play the game. Well, he wasn't exactly excited to play the game, but more to beat Ash and Colby in it. Even God knew how weak Ash was, so it would be very humiliating for Noah to lose to her and her friend with benefits.

As Hunter exclaimed he was the top before he went inside the RV to change, Noah couldn't help but laugh. Hunter was most certainly not the top, at least not in the chicken game. There was no way Noah could hold him on his shoulders. Correction, there was no way Noah would put enough effort into holding Hunter on his shoulders.

Fast forward a few minutes and some adjusting to the water, and Noah now had a guy's head in between his legs. Sure, Noah had expected to have a guy's head between his legs on at least one occasion on this whole crazy unnecessary trip, but he didn't assume it would be while playing a game of chicken in lake Michigan of all the possible places. He actually thought it would be in a very cheap roadside motel or at least somewhere more conventional than such a public place.

This was gonna be fun, especially knowing how it feels to push Ash into the cold water, so having that feeling once again would be amazing.

Beck
Beck grinned as Maisie took her compliment and ran with it. She was better than him. Better than all of them. There was just something about her that was alluring to Beck. Like this invisible force that was just pulling her ever toward the other girl. Beck wasn't willing to give up until she found out what that was. So she glided along behind Stu and Maisie, veering a little more to Maisie's side and walking behind her like a shadow. A few people walked past them and Beck did well to give them a warning glare that would pierce through a brick wall. Naturally distrusting, Beck walked through the world with eyes in the back of her head and it helped to give people a deterrent before they had a chance to even do anything.

Beck stood with her head held high and her shoulders pulled back in a rather aggressive pose, as they stepped into the mall. It was practically deserted and Beck's posture relaxed to her usually slouchy, laid-back position. She shoved her hands in her pockets and the fists that had been curled there relaxed. A lazy smile returned to her face as they moved forward. Stu had it memorized, huh? For some reason she seriously doubted that. Beck eyed a Nike store stowed away in the corner to their right and she nodded them in that direction.

"Colby needs new shoes." She informed as she began walking toward the store, "That much I know."

When Hunter was closer to the group Noah had made a comment about his scrawny legs and Hunter had agreed to take to the bottom. It was going to be an interesting game; he was a little nervous and excited because he still didn’t know these people. He didn’t need to have years on his side, as long as he was a sturdy base and Noah wasn’t a complete klutz then they had a chance to beat the duo. Of course, the second he stepped in the water he couldn’t believe how cold it was. He knew that meant he had to go in headfirst and without hesitation. So, Hunter took a quick run and ran straight into the water. He let his head go under and we can up he let out a loud yell, “Fuck, it’s cold!” but he knew it was the best way to acclimate his body towards the cold. Once he got used to the water, he made his way back over to Hunter, “Let’s kick some ass.” He joked.

He went under the water and got his head between Noah’s and his legs to his shoulders and lifted the boy up with little problem. He had accepted this was probably the only time he would be the bottom to someone else. He looked up just a little, “You situated up there?” He wanted to make sure that Noah was good and ready before the contest began, “You two are going down! Noah and I are going to win.” He hoped that was true but at least a little fun competition would be nice, though he still had a few nerves, but he was trying to keep his nerves to himself. He wanted to have fun with people close to his age and with people who didn’t know his past or his problems.

The odds were not in their favor.

Ash tried to stomach how nervous she felt as Colby got down in the water in front of her. Sucking in a deep breath, she climbed onto his shoulders, squeezing with her legs and resting her hands on top of his head to try and keep her balance as he stood up out of the water -- and it wasn't much warmer up here. A cold breeze was blowing off of the lake, but at least the sun felt good.

She watched as Hunter lifted Noah out of the water on his shoulders. Okay. She glanced over at Bella as she spoke, and Ash threw her a huge smile. "This is why you're my favorite cheerleader." She said, taking Bella's advice while trying really hard to not choke out Colby, and then looked back at Noah and Hunter, her smile fading as she tried to steel her nerves for battle. This was war.

Okay, so on one hand, Noah had strength. Ash wasn't necessarily weak, but she certainly wasn't stronger than the taller boy. On the other hand, Hunter might be a little bit more off balance since Noah was heavier. And Colby was a lot sturdier than he had been like six years ago, and Ash liked to think that she was stronger. Plus, even if Colby and Ash hadn't played this game together in forever, they still had some experience. And obviously, they worked well together.

Ash peered down at Colby. "Alright, handsome. You ready?"

And then she looked back at Noah and Hunter, and the game started. It felt like it lasted for minutes, but to be honest, it was probably only a few seconds of grappling with Noah. And then a well-placed shove into Noah's bare chest sent the boy tumbling backwards into the water, and Ash almost lost her balance and fell in with him, but managed to keep it. Barely.

For a moment, she was surprised, and then a huge smile broke out on her face. "Colby, we won!" She said with a laugh, declaring the obvious, but hey, winning felt good.

“What? No, Bella, she’ll choke me out.” And not in a kinky way, he almost said out loud. If he did, Ash might deliberately choke him out. She could’ve at least crossed her ankles over his chest. Would that work? Maybe not. Who knows.

Well, it didn’t matter. Colby felt Ash’s thighs squeezing on either side of his neck a bit too tightly, and it was gradually becoming difficult to breathe. Yep, not kinky at all. It also didn’t help that freezing water occasionally sprayed in his face during the chicken fight. But Colby was determined to win this. Sure, he had a couple of thousands in his bank account from selling his dirt bike before the trip, but he was kind of cheap and didn’t want to be the only one getting fuel for the RV, which wasn’t even his.

Colby steeled his grip on her knees despite how slippery they were, quickly blinking away water hitting his eyes, grateful that the lake wasn’t as salty as seawater. Holding up Ash was much easier this time, and she would’ve definitely been lighter than Noah. All that weightlift training had paid off well. Well, Hunter looked like he might've lifted a few weights, too, but how well could he maneuver with a tall guy like Noah on his shoulders?

Some moments later, he heard a loud splash in front of him and Ash’s exclaim in glee. We won!

In the words of the infamous Kite Man: Hell yeah!

Once he heard those words Colby completely disregarded keeping Ash’s balance on his shoulders. He jumped and threw his hands up in celebration. It took almost two seconds for him to register the empty weight on his shoulders and the splash right behind him. Oops.

“Shit, sorry for that. You all right, Kutcher?” He didn’t try to hide his laughter, still elated from their miraculous victory high in a chicken fight game. At least he swam up to his old friend and tried to help her not drown. Drowning wouldn’t be fun for this moment.

Hunter had been confident that he was gonna win, and in all honesty, so was Noah. There was no way that Ash and Colby would've won. Sure, Colby was probably stronger than Hunter, but Noah was certainly stronger than Ash.

Perhaps all of that confidence was a little bit too much, because before Noah knew what was happening, the game started, and Noah didn't think the blonde girl would put up a big fight, but she did. It really felt like they had been pushing and holding onto each other for much longer than they had been in reality, but it was probably all that adrenaline and excitement going into Noah's brain and slowing time down for him.

Even with time slowed down, the short blonde had managed to hit Noah in the stomach, delivering the final blow of the short-but-memorable battle, and before he knew it, he had found himself, once again, in the cold lake. He had started getting dry while on Hunter's shoulders, and the water just seemed colder than it was the first time he jumped inside it, which wasn't supposed to happen. Once a person gets used to the water temperature, it shouldn't feel cold.

He rose out from the lake, shaking the water from his hair. "How!? This is not fair!" Noah exclaimed before he realized that Ash literally wasn't there. How does one disappear in the middle of a beach, and more importantly, how does one do that in the short period of a couple of seconds it took Noah to fall into the water and get out.

Karma. This had to absolutely be karma that made it so Colby forgot she was up there, and sent her tumbling backwards into the ice cold lake. The look of joy on her face was quickly overcome by one of surprise as she splashed into the water -- cold and icy against her skin, it knocked the air out of her lungs for a moment.

So when Ash came back up, she was gasping and coughing up some water. She had actually been quite warm and dry on top of Colby's shoulders, so the shock was even worse -- just like poor Noah. Yep, this had to be fucking karma.

However, she was still pretty far down in the water. Like chest level for her, and Colby was slightly farther out of the water. So Ash reached out to grab Colby's arm to try and help herself out of the ice bath of water, but her plan totally back fired when instead, Ash just ended up pulling Colby into the water with her and went back under.

Fuck.

What did Colby ever do to nearly drown three times in one day? It was like Karma just decided to have a field day and go after whoever in this odd traveling group. He’d even said sorry a second ago.

At first, Colby assumed Ash reached out so he could pull her up, and he was ready to help. But he hadn’t expected the sudden force of the tug when she grabbed his arm like a life preserver, and he unwillingly kissed the water again. For the love of Elohim and the bajillion other names, why did Lake Michigan have to be so cold in freakin’ summer? Hawaiian oceans were more comfortable to swim in this weather than here. If only they could afford to go there.

After several seconds of underwater flailing, Colby untangled himself from Ash, nearly bumping his head against hers in the process. He poked his head out of the water to breathe air again, and then pulled his blonde friend upright, lifting her by hugging her waist so she wasn’t low in the water like before. Was he uncomfortable with the closeness? No, not at all. Colby was a hugger and hugging his friends was normal to him.

“You really need to stop trying to kill me, Ash,” he said, half-joking and half-serious. And she was the one who told him not to die the other day. Yeesh.

He woke up, and was certain everyone had left him. And why wouldn't they? It was probably Ash's idea-- nay, it was probably Beck's idea. The amount of sleep he got smushed in next to her was very little, and it wasn't only because he had to curl up into a ball just to fit on the so-called "bed". She probably knew he was onto her, whatever he was onto. She could've really said anything, because everyone only needed an excuse to get rid of him.

But all their shit was still in the van, so forget it. They'd just left him behind for the day. He was sweating, tugged his shirt off and squirmed into a clean pair of boxer shorts. Nobody was around, so they couldn't talk about how gross his scars and track marks looked anyway. He looked out the window and saw everyone else fucking around in a lake, so no more articles of clothing were necessary, lest he sit around waiting for one of his scant numbers of shorts to dry. He stepped out, feeling all sorts of self-conscious about how fucking disgusting he probably looked. Sallow, bloated skin trying to survive heroin withdrawal.

"Hey!" He shouted, then blindly running forward and throwing himself into the water. "CANNONBAAAAA--"

Sploosh.

Jesus, it's cold.

When Hunter felt the loss of weight on his shoulder, he couldn’t believe what had happened, he thought he had maintained a good grip on Noah but apparently, he hadn’t because the other male had completely fallen off and into the icy cold water of the Great Lake. He felt the splash of the water as Noah fell back and heard the exclamation of both Ash and Colby. He was happy for them until he witnessed Ash fall right off of Colby. Well, she was going to be cold just like Noah, seemed like him and Colby where the real winners because they weren’t freezing.

Unfortunately, Hunter had spoken too soon, and Colby went down under the water, and even if Hunter was losing some money for gas he wasn’t being dragged down in the cold water. It was a little funny and he couldn’t help but laugh just a little as the duo rose from the water. Of course, Colby was making a joke and Ash looked annoyed to say the least. The water would do that if you feel in after warming up. Plus no one liked falling especially when they weren’t supposed to. He turned his attention back to Noah, “Sorry we lost. It was still fun.” He gave a small smile towards the boy whose hair was dripping cold water. He could only hope that Colby was doing okay with Ash, “You two lovebirds okay?” he yelled over to them. He really didn’t know them but they seemed closer than some of the others in the van so they must be something more than friends, right? Then again Hunter was just assuming based on first impressions of everyone.

And in that small moment of what he thought was peace he heard a loud yell and then all of a sudden water exploded all around him. He was proud of whoever jumped right in. It was the way to go. He felt bad for Bella who probably got sprayed by some of the water. He waited until the person bobbed back up and thought their name was Shawn? "Hey, Shawn. Nice form on your cannonball!" It really was and if anything else this was the time for all of them to let loose and be young even if it was just for this moment, before continuing on their travels and being cranky once more.

What a disaster.

Ash was pretty sure that she was going to die right here, right now, tangled up with her totally platonic friend in the waters of fucking Lake Michigan. But then Colby got free, and he pulled her out of the water, holding her up by her waist. Ash gasped, wiping water from her face and pushing her hair back again out of her face, before her arms looped around Colby's neck to hold her up. He was taller than her, which meant that holding onto him kept her farther out of the water.

She was in the middle of catching her breath from her third near death experience today when Hunter spoke up, earning a glare from Ash. Sure, maybe that's what it looked like to some, but Ash knew that there was no way in hell she would ever date Colby. Not because there was anything wrong with him, but he had dated (or was still dating?) Tatum. Their relationship was confusing, and Ash didn't want to step on any toes in that, plus her own feelings were still with someone else.

Although, she supposed, they would always be with someone else. Fuck relationships.

"Yes, us two friends are just fine." She said, making sure to emphasize the whole "friend" part, right as Shawn came running down the pier and cannon-balled himself into the water. Ash was not in the mood to be splashed, so she turned her face away into Colby's chest... neck area in a very platonic way, only poking her head back out after she heard the splash.

"Nice job, Shawn. Definitely a better cannonball than Noah."

He probably played a better chicken game than Noah, too.

Bella shrugged at Colby's pleading, watching as Ash tightened her grip around his neck and shoulders. "Being choked out may be a price you must be willing to pay in order to win, Colby!"

She raised a hand and called out for the match to begin and called out as loud as she could for the pairs to begin. It was difficult for Bella to contain the fits of laughter bubbling out of her at the awkward grappling between Ash and Noah while Colby and Hunter struggled to remain anchored into the water below. A few moments later, the battle was over and Noah was plunging into the cool water. Bella had managed to dodge the spray that had been headed her way but did not escape the wave that crashed into her hips after Ash tumbled in and pulled Colby in after her.

"I'm afraid that Colby and Ash won completely fairly!" Bella called out as the four began regaining their composure after the game. She was about to move when a blur of a person ran past her and flew into the water. The water flew up from where they landed and hit Bella straight on, covering the bottom of her hair and torso. She stood there for a moment, taken back by the sudden exposure to the cold water that had splattered on her bare skin, before bursting out laughing as Shawn's face popped back up out of the water.

"Shawn, you are a dead man!" Bella giggled playfully, charging into the water after Shawn and sending a splash of water towards his head.

"Hey! We are NOT lovebirds, new guy," Colby responded after Ash. He was even prepared to drop her to prove the point, but then Shawn arrived and entered the water in a cannonball.

There was nothing for him to protect his face from getting hit with water again besides holding onto his platonic friend. Welp. Thanks a lot, Shawn. He was sure one of his ears had a quarter of Lake Michigan clogged inside now.

"Yep, that's enough swimming for me today." Colby should definitely get out before fate decides to make him lose his shorts in the water. He was about to backward breaststroke or whatever to shore, but Ash still had her arms coiled around his neck.

"Can, uh, you let me go now, please?" he asked in a murmur. His hands were placed on the side of her waist as he gently pulled himself away from Ash. If they stayed this close any longer, it would really get awkward.
