Realistic or Modern Westbrook: On The Road (The First Official Spinoff)

Ash
tumblr_inline_oojnowC0P21urfelz_250.gifv

Everyone was pointing fingers and blaming each other. What a mess.

Ash wasn't even upset about Noah eating donuts or whatever -- she didn't actually like donuts, so whatever. And her attention was stolen from Colby as Stu slid past them, tossing out some more information that didn't help to make her feel any better about this situation. She glared after her little not-brother as he headed into the bathroom. She was mad at Stu for other reasons, namely the sock fetish that he apparently had and his inability to pick up his fucking clothes.

But right now, the look of anger on her face died when Stu mentioned that Colby had burned his hand, and was replaced by a look of worry. "Damn it, Colby. What were you thinking?" She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her and then reached out, grabbing his red hand and pulling it closer for her to look at.

Okay so it wasn't that bad. Like, not we need to go to the hospital bad, but it was still red. Ash let go of his hand, glaring at him and pointed with her hand towards the back bedroom. "Go. Sit. Now." She waited for Colby to head to the bedroom, and then she turned back towards the kitchen. Seriously. What was with people getting hurt today?

Ash didn't pay much attention to everyone else, instead ignoring them and grabbing yet another washcloth which she, again, soaked in some cold water from the fridge. Seriously. Today was getting out of hand.

She took the wash cloth and headed into the bedroom, closing the door after her and tossing the cold cloth at Colby. "Put it on your hand," Ash told him, even if, well, it obviously didn't need to be explained.

Boys were stupid.

Beck would take this as a win. The money seemed to work on Maisie and Beck didn't plan on turning back on it. She grinned rather triumphantly as Maisie told her they could work something out and even wider when she introduced Beck to the rest of their little group and said she thought that Beck should stay. That was two people on her side. From what she'd seen Ash seemed a little authoritative, plus Beck doubted the boys would protest against the girls too much. They had another boy that Beck hadn't seen from the woods before. Maybe this group was a little more welcoming than she'd originally thought. It was funny, they had an odd dynamic going. Some of then acted like they didn't like eachother, yet here they were cramped into an RV together. Beck was curious. What brought them together like this? Did they all go through something? They all probably went to the same school, maybe something had happened there. That was something Beck would have to dig to find. And dig she would with a charming smile and a hidden intent.

Speaking of charming smiles.

Beck offered one to Colby as he walked by her. He smelled of gasoline and smoke. His shoes were missing. It wasn't hard to put two and two together and she kind of chuckled as he blew past her. Burning shoes. The faint scent of burned rubber waffed off of him and Beck found her head dizzying a little. That smell was all too familiar and her stomach dropped along with her smile. Beck reached up and rubbed at her temples as a sharp pain spread behind her eyes. Brief flashes of brightness and a terrible, awful smell like death itself. Beck shook her head as the smell faded away with Colby. Shawn was talking to her. Beck rounded on him with her all to bright smile plastered back on her face.

"I don't have a real direction." Beck informed him, "I just need to get..." She turned to glance out a window and a dark shadow passed over her face. Her smile escaped her again and Beck's eyes burned as they glared out at that familiar wood. Never again. He wouldn't hurt her ever again. "Away from here." Her words we're sharp and as cold as steel. Her eyes were silver brimmed fire. But then suddenly as if a switch had flipped, Beck's entirely too happy expression reappeared and her voice returned to it's normal light tone.

"That's why I offered the money. I didn't expect you guys to just take me on if I couldn't help." She grinned, a different grin than the charming, friendly one from before. A kind of crooked one, like she couldn't quite get it to it's full smile, "After all."

"I am a stranger."

“Not helping, Kit-Kat,” Colby grumbled under his breath. Stu was exaggerating now. They put out the fire just fine after a few moments of panic.

This was why he didn’t want to tell her. Colby didn’t want to see Ash worry about something as trivial as slight burns on his hands. It wasn’t like he was bleeding. And he was a big boy who could’ve gotten a wet cloth himself, but Ash had that infamous West stubbornness. She wanted him in the bedroom? Fine. There was no use arguing with her. He dragged his feet to the bed like a pouty child and sat on the edge. If the mood had been better, he would’ve made a subtle dirty joke and forget what happened today.

“You know, it’s not that bad—” Colby caught the wet cloth and flinched from the cool dampness touching the red splotches on his palms. “My skin’s a bit sensitive right now, that's all,” he mumbled, gently compressing the cloth between his hands. “At least I didn’t die like you told me to.”

This whole situation was really quite comedic if you looked at it from Noah's viewpoint. It had everything. The quirky characters. Check. The weirdest shit, aka. the plot. Check. The drama. Check. In Noah's opinion, this road trip would've made one hell of a sit-com on Netflix. Friends who?

While Ash and Colby were playing house, pretending to be the mommy and daddy of the group, fighting like most parents do, Stu had been stirring up more things for Ash to be mad at Colby about, which was something Noah didn't particularly care about, seeing that he wasn't scared of Ash or her being mad like Colby was. Colby was kind of just being a coward. Like, grow a pair, dude.

As well as that, Ash wasn't even the authority figure people should be scared of. They were literally out of Westbrook, all of their parents, the authority figures they should be afraid of, long ways behind them, which was kind of the point of the trip for some of these kids. Maybe not particularly for Noah, but why Noah did this whole trip wasn't anybodies business, other than his, of course.

Noticing the gas canisters just chilling next to the RV, Noah figured it was his job to fill the RV, and he was the clumsiest, so he really hoped he wouldn't spill or somehow get the whole group stuck in this same spot for the next day. They couldn't afford to call somebody to help them because there was always that danger of people actually looking for them.

Hopefully successfully, Noah filled the RV with the gas they brought back and put the canisters into the side compartment they originally came from.

He rushed the people still outside into the RV, getting his keys which were on a surface inside the RV once he entered and then sat in the drivers seat which he was already accustomed to seeing he was the one driving most of the time. It might have been surprising to some, but Noah actually learned to drive, or well, learned not to care and worry about every single thing while driving, which was why his driving actually became better.

Noah finally turned the RV on and started driving, letting the breeze from the outside blow inside through the open windows of the RV. The only thing which could be heard for miles on this Indiana highway were the amazing sounds of REO Speedwagon and a bunch of hormonal teenagers having a fit in the background.

Episode 2: Chicago
Westbrook_ On the road (4).png

Ash
Beach.gif

While she'd been distracted with Colby, Noah had ushered everyone into the RV and started it up and then they were back on the road. Which, well, wouldn't have been a huge issue if they didn't have, oh, Hunter and Beck on the stupid RV. But now Ash couldn't say anything, so the already cramped RV grew by two more which meant even more socks. Luckily, Stu was sleeping in a different part of camper than Ash and the other girls because there was no way she could've handled his socks all over her bed.

The back of the RV proved to be a safe haven for Ash, and she spent most of her time back there. Hiding out in the bed while Noah drove. At least in the back, Ash could almost pretend that she wasn't on a moving vehicle being driven by Westbrook's own worst driver. Noah, the Killer of Trash Cans. Plus, well, the front of the RV was just packed now and there wasn't even room for her to play cards with Bella or Maisie.

A couple days had passed when they finally arrived in Chicago. Again, Stu's bad directions had caused them to get all twisted around, but they were at least kind of getting somewhere. Noah suggested that they stop at a beach on Lake Michigan, and Ash was more than willing to agree to it. Getting to be off of the RV and getting to swim sounded like heaven.

They pulled up to the beach, and Ash was one of the first off of the stupid RV. It was nice to be outside, breathing in the cool lake air instead of the smell of Stu's sweaty socks.

With her sunglasses on and a towel under one arm, Ash ignored the rest of the group and headed down to the beach. Ash had only one thing that she wanted to do on the beach, and she intended to do it.

Ash found an empty part of the beach and spread out her towel, and then laid down, stretching out to enjoy the sun and the peace and quiet.

Perfect.

The minor burns on his hands healed easily during the next few days, and the shoe fire incident felt like a distant memory. Well, maybe not quite distant. Ash was still maybe a teensy bit upset about it and how Colby tried to lie – she gave him a good scolding while in the back. It was a stupid thing for him to do, he knew, and trying to use Stu as his accomplice was a mistake, mainly because Colby still got most of the blame, and should’ve known Ash would just be annoyed towards Stu in general.

Ash hiding away in the back of the RV didn’t escape his attention. A few times when not driving, Colby tried talking to Ash and keep her company—platonically, of course. He just didn’t want her to be alone all the time. However, she gave him the silent treatment for a while, because of the fire thing and perhaps bringing Hunter without mentioning beforehand. Fine by him. He offered to listen to his old iPod Classic (yes, he still used an iPod) with her, no talking required while the Beatles' Abbey Road album and others play in their earphones. If she didn’t want to, he lied down on the foot of the bed or floor and quietly read the Peter Pan novel that he brought to the trip. What? It was a bit too rowdy in front of the RV to read it peacefully. And with Colby being a large muscular guy the front was cramped sometimes, especially when Stu often took most of the sofa space.

Colby was really excited to be in Chicago. He wanted to see the Bean and the Sears Tower so he could stand on the rail and watch the city below. But he doubted there was enough time for sightseeing. Also, he still needed to buy new shoes. That was his initial plan, to walk to the nearest store when the RV was parked. He was about to tell Ash his plan, but he watched her walk past him and leave the RV without a word. She didn’t say anything to anyone on the way out, but Colby might’ve felt a tiny sting from the way she ignored him, too.

After telling the group that he would step out without much detail, Colby followed his longtime blonde friend.

“Need help putting sunblock on your back?” He sat down next to Ash about one foot away, wearing his board shorts and a plain tank top because he wasn’t often shirtless as some people believed. “I have the spray version, so you don’t have to worry about me touching you awkwardly. I’m not even thinking about wanting to do that, by the way.”

Solitude and silence could only be had for so long before Colby came along. A small sigh escaped her lips, before turning into a small smile. Okay, so maybe Colby wasn't the worst person to talk to on this trip. He was her only actual friend on the trip -- okay, well, Ash and Noah were kind of friends. They'd started hanging out more after Mason's ass had broken his leg. But she was positive that Maisie hated her, and Ash knew that Stu despised her, and Shawn... well, the two weren't on the best of terms after Ash had told him to jump off the roof of the school. To be honest, she didn't even remember saying that.

Of course, Bella didn't hate her, and they were kind of friends since they were on the cheerleading squad together. But that left two people out of the eight that actually liked her -- maybe Beck and Hunter, but Ash hadn't spoken to either of them much over the last couple days. The only person she'd spent any time with had been Colby, and that hadn't exactly been by her own decision. And yes, even if she hated to admit it, she had enjoyed having Colby back there with her.

Even if she was still mad at him for the whole catching things on fire deal.

She sat up, propping herself up on her elbows to look at Colby as he spoke. "Okay, see... okay, so it wouldn't have been awkward, but you just made it awkward by talking about it." Rubbing... alright, never mind, there was no way to make that not awkward. "Anyway, thanks for the offer, but I'm fine." Ash responded, and sat up the rest of the way.

"Are you making Stu and Maisie get you new shoes?" She asked. "Since they're doing that supply run or whatever, I kind of thought you'd be with them." However, it was a pleasant surprise that Colby had followed her out here instead. What? Ash liked to hangout with her friends. "Plus if you make them do that, then you can stay here with me."

Stu

DQu9F5R.gif

Who would have thought that a spiritual journey across the great American frontier encompassing wide open fields and taken alongside breathtaking lakes could smell so much like… DIRTY SOCKS?

Now let’s get one thing straight. Stu wasn’t ENTIRELY to blame for the group’s unfortunate predicament, however much Ash was wanting to throw him off the RV for the reason of merely existing. In fact, he couldn’t possibly have been the guilty party in all of this, seeing as he had packed more socks for the trip than anybody! For days Stu had enjoyed the luxury, not shared by others, of starting every morning in a fresh pair of socks, and of ending each day in a relatively tolerable state of feet. Could the same be said of Colby? Or of Noah? Absolutely not! This was surely infallible logic and mathematical proof by which Ash’s baseless and outrageous discriminations ought readily to be discredited!!!

As for insinuations of his poor navigational skills, these were also to be rejected on grounds that it hadn’t been his fault that NOAH had missed a turn, for which he had been given well more than a minute of ADVANCE NOTICE. Only by Stu’s incredible perseverance and praiseworthy intellection did they manage to get back on course, with minimal wastage of time and gas. By his heroics they did arrive in Chicago, albeit entering from the wrong side of the city (a minor inconvenience), in one piece – and the lake of a certain cat-lady’s hometown was glittering in the sun, welcoming their tired souls and recompensing them for their troubles with pretty vistas.

Still, there was no rest for the wicked. While Ash laid out her beach towel and fancied herself the poster-girl on the cover of a bikini magazine, and while Colby seemed to join her in obviously romantic camaraderie, Maisie and Stu had been tasked with a supply run and whatnot to the nearest mall.

There would be no complaints from Stu, who was dying to get out of the RV and away from Ash and the rest of the group. But why did he have to go with Maisie, of all people?

In fact, he asked Maisie as much, while they walked along the promenade:

‘Why do I have go with you, of all people?’

Beck

Beck had been to Chicago before, of course she had, but there seemed to be a vast difference between then and now. She could remember rolling up to the lake in their old Volkswagen, as her dad tried to assert that they wouldn't go further than they could touch in the lake. Beck of course, always the rule breaker, had completely ignored that warning. She'd waded out into the lake far further than she could touch and once she couldn't see the bottom any more she had began to panic. It was funny to Beck, the memory of young her trashing around desperately. It wasn't like she couldn't swim, she was quite the aquatic kid, it was just the sudden panic that had overtaken her. A kind if panic that she hadn't experienced up to that point. It wasn't the last time either. That was back when her dad had been working. When he'd been sober. Those were the good days of her childhood. A few months later when her father got fired was when all things went to hell.

They never went back to the lake.

Beck shook away the unpleasant memories as she stepped out of the RV behind Stu. The whole ride over here had been a bit awkward to say the least. Beck couldn't blame them, they had every right to be wary of her, she just wished she didn't have to sleep on the damn booth. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything, she didn't have much to compare it to, it was just that she was too tall. Her damn feet hung off the edge of the thing and it was really fucking annoying. Hell, she would've taken the floor. But she had to admit that it was funny watching Stu get stepped over. She'd keep her booth as long as that entertained her. They didn't seem to have quite the same animosity toward Hunter that they had toward her. Beck figured it was just because he was a little more cut and dry. She liked to think herself unpredictable and maybe they saw that too. No matter, Beck had gotten what she wanted, they didn't have to like her just yet. She might put more effort into the whole friendship thing a little later, but for now she was keen to just observe.

The sun made her squint as her feet connected with solid ground. God, she hated the sun. It gave them life and everything but could it like, calm down a little? It didn't have to blind her every time she stepped outside. Blame it on her sensitive eyes, but she kind of wanted the thing to just disappear, no matter if it took her with it or not. Beck wanted lots of things to disappear. Like cell phones and spray tans and a lot of fucking people. A lot. All 7 billion of them. Gone. The world would be so much better off. Beck stood with her hands in her pockets, contemplating the destruction of the entire human race, when she noticed Maisie and Stu taking off on their own. Pushing her thoughts off for later, Beck followed after them, being sure to not to be noticed as Stu spoke. Her eyebrows knitted together as he spoke and she found herself pushing forward and falling in step between the two of them. Maisie was a lot more interesting than the rest of the snore fests on that RV. Stu should be so lucky to get stuck with her alone. Except he wasn't lucky anymore because Beck wasn't going to let him just walk around and insult her like that.

"You should be so lucky, Stu. Maisie is better company than most of you." Beck threw Maisie a wink as they continued walking. She just hoped Maisie wouldn't take the compliment with hostility. She was one of the group Beck actually wanted to be friends with. She could tell an artist from a mile away. They were akin.

Colby laughed at her remark, shaking his head as if she had just said something silly. “Well, I don’t exactly feel awkward talking about it. I mean, skin protection is kind of a serious matter to keep in mind.”

He glanced over his shoulder, looking back at the RV, and spotted Stu and Maisie leaving for their errand, with the new girl Beck slinking along. Colby hadn’t told them to buy him shoes. They needed extra money to buy supplies, after all, and he didn’t really trust anyone, especially Stu, to find him a good pair.

“And I thought you wouldn’t want me anywhere near Stu, after what happened the last time I did,” Colby said, making a small hill of sand in front of him. “You know, I really am sorry for trying to lie to you about the shoe fire thing. But would you have reacted any differently if I'd told you the truth first? I just didn't want you to worry.”

She laughed at his joke about skin protection, but the laughter and smile on her face was quickly stolen with talk of the gas station fire incident. Ash looked away from Colby towards the water. It made her a little homesick, looking out across the endless blue water. Right now, all she really wanted to do was go back home, but there wasn't anything left for her there.

"Why does everyone do that?" She asked. "Look, I'm a big girl. I'm an adult. I can handle the truth." In her last years of high school, Ash had been through hell and back. At this point, there was nothing anyone could tell her that would bother her and honestly? Not knowing the truth right away hurt more than anything.

"Well, no, I guess I would've been as worried, but less angry." Ash admitted. That was kind of a lie -- she would've been just as angry, because who managed to catch their shoes on fire? "Just tell me the truth next time, okay? Of course I'm going to worry about you burning yourself, but that's just because you're one of my best friends."

"But, we're on vacation. Let's stop worrying." Ash said as she stood up, and held a hand out to Colby. "Do you want to go swimming with me?"

“I know you can handle it. You’re just kinda scary when you’re angry,” he said with a cheeky smile. Despite the lighthearted quip, Colby solemnly swore to tell her the truth next time, especially if it was important. After all, she did just call him one of her best friends.

When Ash offered the swim, Colby perked a smile, removed his flip-flops and shirt, and accepted her hand. “Hey, remember the time I helped you build a sandcastle?” he asked her as they walked past a few people creating their mini sand sculptures. “And then I sneezed and it collapsed.”

It happened in the summer before 7th grade. Little Ash and Colby (and maybe some of Ash’s other friends were there. He couldn’t remember) were hanging out at the local beach in Westbrook. The waves were a bit too rough to swim in, so Colby asked his best blonde friend Do you wanna build a sandman? Without singing it, of course, because they don’t live in that kind of world, no matter how much Colby secretly wished it. Or just a sandcastle. Either is fine.

They decided to make a small castle. Barely 5 seconds after finishing their cute masterpiece, Colby sneezed out what almost resembled a gust and their hard work crumbled, like something out of an old comedy or cartoon. He mostly blamed the weak foundation, not just his seasonal allergies.

When they arrived at the edge of the water, the rounded side of an American football clocked the back of his skull. The shock was enough to almost make him faceplant in the sand. At least it wasn’t a direct hit from the point and nowhere near below his waist.

“Who the fu—?” When he looked back to find the culprit, he quickly stopped himself from finishing that sentence. It if had been a douchey frat guy, Colby would probably kick his face. But he couldn’t kick a 10-year-old girl playing catch with her dad, who looked an awful lot like a Terminator’s doppelganger. Dammit.

“Flick your wrist instead of pushing it,” Colby grumbled a bit of friendly advice to the kid, massaging the sore back of his head. He wasn't a football expert, but it was better than cussing out a child and being throttled by the dad.

Hunter had been quiet since meeting the whole group, it had been difficult for him, he didn’t know these people, but he was going on some massive road trip with all of them. He was wary of everyone around, but it seemed like the guy named Colby seemed to be the male in charge and the blonde girl Ash, seemed to also be in charge. He had already decided to not anger the blonde but also to just not really talk to anyone while in the RV. It was hard for him to know what to do and everyone seemed to be tense and he had no idea who to ask as to why everyone seemed so tense. He felt like a fly on the wall except he was quite a bit larger than a fly and no one was trying to kill him yet. Everyone seemed concerned about Beck, but she seemed okay enough in his eyes. He could be wrong but if she had wanted any of them dead, she would’ve done it by now and she hadn’t so she was okay in his eyes and she was just as new as him, he just didn’t know how to talk with any of these new people.

He wasn’t sure how long they had been in the RV before they stopped, and he was relieved to finally get off of the RV. He could see Ash and Colby had gone off on their own and he just sat off on his own for a second. He wasn’t sad he was more so lost as to what he had agreed to, lost as to where they were going, and he had left. His phone had still been blown up by his mom, but he couldn’t bring himself to answer the phone. He just kept looking at the screen. He left and now what could he do? It was hard having no friends in this situation and having no idea how to handle being kicked from the house by the group of people that were supposed to love always. So now he was with the van of misfits and he wasn’t sure if he could make them his new family even if he wanted to.

Bella wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of letting two complete strangers join them on the road trip. Realistically, most of the people that were on the trip were almost strangers to Bella and she certainly wasn't close with any of them, but at least they all came from the same place! Beck made her nervous with her hollow gaze and bizarre demeanor. Bella really tried not to judge her, clearly the girl had been through some shit that had caused her to get away from wherever she was that day in the cornfield, but she couldn't help but feel like Beck was going to stab her in her sleep. Hunter, on the other hand, seemed like an okay guy, though no one really knew him. She thought the boys were insane for picking him up along the way. How does a group go to get gas and come back with a stray? Of course, they hadn't done much better with Beck.

The trip to Chicago seemed tense to Bella. The already populated RV was struggling to accommodate the two extra bodies they had picked up. Bella's motion sickness had kicked in a few times, making her absolutely miserable and likely not fun to be around. She couldn't hang out with Ash or Maisie with the lack of room in the RV so she kept mostly to herself, listening to music and trying to teach herself how to knit. When the RV pulled up to the beach, Bella was more than happy to get out of there as quickly as possible.

The beach was beautiful and the water seemed so inviting. There was a beach by her house back in France that Bella used to go to all the time with her father and sister, the very beach where she learned how to swim, where she had her first date, and where she had her first kiss. She always loved the water, it was calming and an amazing way to blow off steam which she definitely needed after being cooped up in the RV for so long.

Bella got changed into her bathing suit, keeping on a pair of jean shorts and a loose shawl hanging over her shoulders, and stepped out of the RV. She took a deep breath, the sweet fresh air filling her lungs and flowing through her like an instant boost of happiness. Bella swung the door closed behind her, rocking on the balls of her feet and stretching out her arms, her joints cracking in protest. Ash and Colby were already making their way to the water, Stu and Maisie were planning a supply run, and Hunter looked rather concerned as he gazed down at the phone screen in front of him.

Walking over to him, Bella hugged her shawl closed across her chest to combat the chill that had begun running through her, and she cleared her throat gently, not wanting to scare the guy.

"Hey, is everything okay? You look kind of upset," Bella asked. "I mean, I'd be upset too if I had to share a sleeping spot with Stu."

Ah yes, the beach.

Noah absolutely loved the sensation of feeling weightless and floating in a large body of water more commonly known as swimming. Just chilling in the warm and intense sun rays on a beach somewhere was also a big plus, and it really didn't matter if he was surrounded by people or not because when on a beach, one should focus on themselves the most. Well, sure, it can get quite boring after a while and playing games in the water is always a fun activity, so Noah kind of hoped the others would be up for hanging out with him, seeing he hadn't really been in the best mood in the last couple of days. After all, he didn't want to be the weirdo playing games by himself.

He didn't care about being seen naked, but because he didn't want to make others uncomfortable, he had gone to the small bathroom in the RV to put his swimming trunks on. He had also applied a very large amount of sunscreen because like most pale white boys, the sun would scorch his skin if he was in it for longer than a few minutes without sunscreen. This meant that the white sunscreen had made him look even paler than he usually looked. For reference, we are talking Edward Cullen meets James Charles' FlashBack Mary. All in all, it was bad, but Noah couldn't care less about looking like Casper the Gay Ghost because all this ghost wanted to do was swimming.

Exiting the tiny bathroom, a sock somehow fell on Noah's face. He wanted to get angry, but he just sighed, defeated. He had no idea where the little British nuisance got all of these socks, but he couldn't handle them anymore. There were just so many.

"Begone, sock!" He exclaimed, or actually said in a normal tone of voice, trying to make it sound like he was exclaiming it, before curling the sock into a ball and throwing it outside through one of the open windows. Yeah, sure, littering and all that, but you don't know how good that felt. Seeing Stu had so many socks, Noah would probably be repeating that action at least 17 more times.

Ash
Sassy Head Tilt.gif

The mention of the beach and that day brought a smile to Ash's face. Colby and Ash had arrived earlier than her other friends, and that's when the whole sand castle massacre had occurred. Ash remembered being upset about it at first -- all of that hard work just to be destroyed by Colby's ridiculous allergies. However, her other friends had arrived shortly after that, and the day had turned around. And of course, more sandcastles had been built.

Grace and Ryder. That's who had shown up later.

"Yeah, it was fun." She murmured quietly, distracted by her own thoughts for a moment. "You know, the last time I went swimming was with Ryder. Well, not with Ryder. He threw me in the water beginning of junior year." A smile flickered across her face for a moment at the memory. Last summer, Ash had been stuck in the hospital. By time she was actually free from the hospital, the weather had already started to turn cooler, and Ash had been too depressed to even get out of bed.

Her thoughts were swirling, cascading, making her start to withdraw into herself.

The football that hit Colby in the back of the head was almost a blessing.

She flinched away from him when the ball hit the back of his head. Ash cast an angry glare at whoever had thrown the ball, only to see a young girl with her father, and the look of anger died from her face. She couldn't be mad at a child. "Be more careful next time," she suggested, picking up the ball and tossing it back to the girl before her attention turned to Colby.

"Wow, the world is really out to get you." Ash joked with a playful grin. She peered at the back of his head, checking for injury, but Colby was fine. Well, other than maybe his pride.

And then, karma struck in the form of a sock.

Ash turned around to see what had hit her, and her gaze fell on one of Stu's many disgusting socks. Her glare turned towards the RV, and landed on the only guy still inside the gross camper. Noah.

"What the hell, Noah?" She yelled, picking up the gross sock between two fingers and holding it up, her blue eyes staring daggers before she threw the sock back at the RV.

Noah said 'Begone, sock!', with the obvious intention of getting rid of the already mentioned smelly sock of a certain British lad, but he certainly didn't expect the sock to return back into the RV from the same direction he threw it at. He didn't expect the thing to return at all. What really surprised him, though, was that the sock spoke. Was it possible that Stu's odious feet sweat was actually radioactive and that it created a mutant sock that could speak? After all, he was British, so that possibility couldn't have been ruled out.

Oddly enough, the sock had a tone of voice that sounded exactly like it belonged to everybody's favorite blonde, the Westbrook princess and honorable drug addict, Ashton West. Looking at the direction he threw the sock, his brown orbs called eyeballs stumbled upon a pair of blue ones, looking sharply at him. He wasn't afraid of Ash, but her stare did kind of make him feel some kind of a rush, but not a sexual one Colby or another straight dude would probably feel in Noah's situation. This rush was an adrenaline one. He could never feel anything sexual towards a girl. Never ever. Girls were, and will always be a big no-no.

Now, Noah wasn't going to be like Colby or Stu and be scared of Ash's stare. She couldn't do anything to him and her stare didn't have anything behind her.

He exited the RV, only in his swimming trunks and nothing else. He had a plan already forming inside the hollow shell he usually referred to as his head.

As he made his way to Ash and Colby, Noah didn't really look around him, but there were presumably some girls looking his way. Probably not as many as Colby attracted with his sculpted abs, but like it was already mentioned, Noah couldn't care less about thirsty girls.

"I wasn't aiming for you. I'm like so sorry, but..." Noah had pretended to be genuine in his fake apology to Ash, but while thinking about what he was about to do and about Ash's reaction to his action, he couldn't keep a straight face. He was such a sucker for pranks.

"...not as sorry as you'll be for throwing it back." Noah used to do track, and just like that, he crouched down just enough to grab a hold of Ash's floral blue towel. He had already noticed that there was a small wooden pier children were jumping from into the lake, so as soon as the side of the towel was firmly in his fist, Noah made a run for it.

While running, he ruffled Ash's towel into a little ball and held it with both of his hands, laying it on his chest. It was kind of sandy, but it would all wash off.

"Cannonball!" He exclaimed a few moments before he reached the end of the pier. Having a running start, he had time mid-air to put his legs to his chest, trapping the towel. After that, he wrapped his hands around his legs to do a proper cannonball.

It looked majestic.

And then...

...death.

Colby brushed the sand off his shorts and chest after standing up again. “I think Stu’s Stu-ness is contagious,” he muttered. He definitely felt a bruise starting to form, and it wasn’t just on his head. Maybe this was just the universe’s way of telling him not to lie to Ash again.

Before he could retort that she probably had deserved being thrown in the water by Ryder, Ash was struck by a sock ball. That sudden turn of event was such a knee-slapper – literally, Colby slapped his knee once and tried not to keel over from laughing.

“Look at that, they’re flying now,” he said, hardly containing his chortle. Ash couldn’t be the only one to enjoy the expense of other people getting hit by random projectiles.

Then, Colby watched Noah snatch Ash’s towel and make a dramatic jump into the water. Well, that was confusing and random. Why steal a silly towel and run off? It wasn’t like him or Ash was near to get caught in the splash zone of Noah’s cannonball. Then again, it wasn’t Colby’s towel that was stolen.

“You think he’s still alive down there?”

She sent a cold glare in Colby's direction as he started laughing. Getting hit with her little not-brother's sweaty sock was not funny. Well, it hadn't been that funny for her, and oh, she would remember this.

Her attention could only stay on Colby for so long when Westbrook's own gay ghost came out of the RV. Was he offering her apologies? Ash was suspicious, because Noah was kind of a dick, and he didn't apologize. Which meant that he had something up his sleeve, he was planning something, and she was on guard.

And then Noah grabbed her towel and was taking off for the water, and Ash's jaw dropped open. There was nothing she could do but watch as he took off down the pier and cannonballed into the water, with her towel. "Noah!" She yelled after him, but it was useless. With a huff, Ash grabbed Colby's hand and dragged him after her.

They walked up onto the pier, heading to the end before she finally let go of Colby's hand. Noah still hadn't come up, and Ash could only imagine why he could hold his breath for so long.

She crouched down by the edge of the pier, reaching down to feel the water and was met with ice cold. Yeah. There was no way that she was going in there for her towel.

Ash stood back up, stepping back to stand beside Colby when he asked if Noah was still alive. "Yeah... you know, maybe you should go check on him." And then she shoved her hands into him with all of the might that her little body had and pushed him into the ice cold water.

Now that was funny, and Ash couldn't contain her laughter.

Ash didn’t have to drag him like a man-child; Colby could’ve done that himself. But whatever. He just went along with her instead of pulling away. In retrospect, he probably should have.

Colby looked over the pier while Ash touched the somewhat chilly water. Well, he didn’t really think it was that cold. It was summer in Chicago, after all. Still, it kind of sucks to have a soaked towel now. He scooted closer to the edge to get a better view of the water, but still couldn’t see Noah. Maybe he dived and swam to the other side. Part of Colby suspected their dark-haired friend would sneak up behind them and pushed the duo in the water.

What he didn’t expect was Ash to do just that. How was he supposed to suspect his own best friend to do something so evil to him? Colby was about to reply to Ash that he didn’t want to. But before he could step back a sudden force caught him off guard, and he ungracefully nosedived into the lake. Yep, the water was indeed cold.

“You devious little blondie!” Colby coughed after quickly resurfacing, pushing back his soaked hair, and glared at Ash above him. “Oh, you are so gonna get it for that,” he said and began splashing water at her.

Being in the sun, even for that short amount of time, Noah's body temperature rose. In addition to that, everybody knows physical activity, for example, running with a certain blonde's towel in your hands, can also make your muscle temperature rise.

It's never a good idea to suddenly immerse yourself in a large body of water because of the temperature difference, but since it was summer, Noah hadn't expected the lake to be anything short of lukewarm. Even little kids were jumping and splashing each other with the water, so it must have been at least a little bit warm, right? Wrong. This wasn't just any lake, it was lake Michigan and it was much less than lukewarm, but of course, the kids who were splashing each other with the water had probably gotten used to it seeing they probably lived close to the lake.

Noah, obviously, didn't know this. He was the type of person who absolutely couldn't stand cold water. His showers had to be extremely warm or he simply wouldn't take the shower. Sure, if he absolutely needed to shower, he would, but he wouldn't enjoy it, not even a little bit. He didn't even like to drink his water if it wasn't at least room temperature.

At first, the water was extremely hot, burning even, but then Noah's senses got their shit together, and he realized he had immersed himself in cold water.

The shock was strong enough for him to let go of the towel and just sink for a few seconds before becoming aware of his surroundings. Even though his bones started hurting from the water being too cold, Noah could actually say that this actually felt just a little tiny teensy bit nice. He continued to slowly sink, enjoying the feeling of his muscles tensing up and his bones hurting as well as the feeling of just being weightless and simply letting go of his problems for just a few seconds.

Soon enough, he noticed that he didn't have Ash's towel in his grasp, but it was blue and floral, so he wouldn't have much of a problem locating it.

After diving around for a few seconds, he had noticed the towel had sunk to the bottom, and next to it, the biggest fish he had ever seen. It was also the ugliest and scariest thing he had ever seen. There was literally no way he would be going down to get it because he didn't feel like dying yet, and also, he didn't have a lot of oxygen left in his lungs, like almost none.

Quickly swimming to the surface, mostly because of not having enough oxygen, but also because of fear the fish caused him to feel. Ew.

He had emerged to the surface, seeing Colby in the lake, splashing Ash.

She hopped back as Colby splashed her with water, letting out a small and rather embarrassing squeal. "No, that's cold!" Ash whined and stepped farther back from the edge of the water, her arms crossed over her chest. "And I'm not going in and you can't make me." She said with a smirk. She figured if Colby tried to climb out to get her, she would have a running head start.

It would be fine.

Noah finally resurfaced, although without one blue towel. "Did you lose my towel?" She asked, looking at him. How in the hell did you lose a towel when you jumped into the water?

Well, she understood how, but god damn it.

“Don’t tempt me, West. I wasn’t thinking about doing that ‘til you mentioned it.”

Colby had taken cold showers sometimes – because washing hair under steaming hot water is actually not a good idea – and once tried an ice bath after a workout. But being in the frigid water for this long was not his cup of tea, even if it was summer.

After one last water toss at Ash’s direction, Colby swam towards a ladder closeby and climbed up. He sat on the pier, his feet hanging off the edge, and rubbed his arms for warmth. He could feel nearly every muscle in his body contracting through the shiver. Damn Noah for stealing and losing Ash’s towel in the lake.

“D-dammit, Noah! we could’ve used that towel,” Colby exclaimed with a slight stutter that he barely managed to restrain. “You think playing that chicken game is out of the question?” he asked Ash.

Noah had heard Ash questioning him about her blue towel, which he clearly lost due to the awful and surprisingly large fish at the bottom of the ice-cold lake, but he couldn't let out a single word at the moment. He had just resurfaced, and he didn't have any oxygen in his lungs. With most of his muscles tensing up but also relaxing at the same time and his bones hurting, he could barely keep himself on the surface of the stupidly cold lake.

Colby climbed back up onto the pier, and it was time for Noah to do the same. He did a swimmy swim towards the ladder on the side of the pier before holding onto it for a few seconds and then, eventually, he climbed up. His everything hurt, but as soon as he was out of the water, he wanted to go back in. Probably all those happy memories of swimming he did with his dad every summer, but obviously not this summer.

Colby mentioning his name brought Noah back from his head and him thinking about his dad. Luckily, he wasn't sad yet, and that meant he wasn't grumpy either.

Colby and Ash were yapping and complaining about him throwing the towel, but it was very fun to do that cannonball into the lake, even though the water was cold. At one point he even felt like he was flying.

"The towel belongs to her now," Noah said, serious, without much expression evident on his face. When he said 'her', he was obviously referring to the big booty fish on the bottom of the lake, but it wasn't like Ash or Colby knew that.

"And, instead of complaining..." His face was now featuring a smirky smile. "Why don't you go look for it?"

He said before pushing both Ash and Colby into the cold lake. It was only fair.

Hunter had been slightly startled when Bella had walked over to him. He quickly turned his phone over and put it away he didn’t feel quite comfortable talking about what had happened at least not with someone he barely knew. Bella seemed really sweet and Hunter figured she would listen, but he still hadn’t fully processed everything going on. He didn’t want to lie to this girl he wanted to make sure no one on the trip came to hate him because then he would be back on his own figuring out how to escape. Instead Hunter shrugged, “I’ve been better. It’s not Stu, though his socks are disgusting. I want to burn every sock he owns.” Hunter gave a small chuckle. Really no one in the group was bad the socks were annoying especially when he woke up next to one. The cramped space though not ideal didn’t really upset Hunter, but he hadn’t actually told anyone that he was bisexual, he hadn’t discussed anything about himself with anyone. No one had asked why he was leaving; no one had questioned anything about him, and he was relieved. He could take time to process and then when he felt comfortable maybe he would tell everyone he had met.

He gave a soft smile to Bella, “I’m sorry, if I ruined any plans that you all had. I didn’t mean to intrude. I never did give a proper introduction, but I’m Hunter and it’s really nice to meet you, Bella. Right?” he wanted to make sure he had been paying close enough attention when everyone spoke because he really hadn’t introduced himself to anyone and that meant his first impression probably hadn’t been the best impression. So he was hoping maybe at least he could try and make a better second impression at least with one person.
