horrorshow
black magic and cigarettes
The Berkley children know only their way of life. A tight-knit sibling group with parents of extreme wealth, they are accustomed to their secluded luxuries in their forest-surrounded home just outside of a small town in Mississippi. What sets the Berkley children apart from others their ages is not only their lavish lifestyle in their private plantation, but the fact that they are witches, their parents are witches, their extended family are witches, and they all belong to a large coven that spread its roots all across the south years ago.
Like most wealthy families with large estates, the Berkley's have a small staff of house attendants, all of which are your common mortals. They reside in two small brick houses located on the property near the plantation, one house for the women servants, and one house for the men. The wages aren't much for the house and grounds keepers, and favoritism can easily increase or decrees each ones amount. However, in a world where many are too poor to make a living of their own, most of the attendants have no choice but to work for the Berkley's. Some of them have been around for some time, and know well that dark secrets reside within the walls of the Berkley house. Others have only recently become enslaved to the peculiar family, and don't know what lies in wait in the shadows.
In particular, three new attendants have been hired on at the estate, and given the reclusive nature of the Berkley children, they are not fond of strangers. Like always, they intend to use their witchcraft to play pranks, harmless or not so harmless, on the new staff.
The oldest Berkley child's birthday is coming up, and this year several important members of their coven are coming to their home to celebrate and welcome the child into adulthood. It is, of course, very important that they maintain a good reputation with the elders of the coven, so everything around the house must be in proper order, the children must be on their best behavior and practiced in their magic, and the attendants are responsible for making sure they house is in perfect shape, but they seem to be getting rather distracted with trying to figure out just what is going on with their new masters...
The setting is timeless, so things like phones and the internet exist, but there is also still slavery in America among less wealthy families, and a more traditional Victorian mixed with modern style to architecture and fashion. The roleplay is located in Mississippi, so a traditional southern location, but creative liberties are allowed and encouraged to build upon the world around you.
Also fun fact just because the characters are witches and humans doesn't mean the house can't be haunted, there can be ghosts and stuff if you want. Just keep it semi-realistic and don't go totally overboard.
I am aware the roles are a little detailed in some places, you are still encouraged to take full creative liberty with your role. Nothing is gender locked, ages should stay within the suggested range by each role, you are welcome to 2 roles per person but no more than that. The roleplay is not first come first serve, but you're welcome to apply with a CS (which will be posted soon) and if I react to it with a heart that means I have accepted it. Until then you may express interest in a specific role here.
Witches
Oldest Child: (OPEN)(20-23) The responsible witch, the oldest child is well practiced in their magic and rituals, they keep the family's secret well, and are preparing to learn to manage the estate and the family.
Second Oldest: (TAKEN BY: jasmyn )(18-19) Free spirited hardly defines the middle Berkley child who neither understands the family's necessity to live so secretly or why witches are looked down upon. Caught somewhere in the middle of wanting to be a witch and fit in with their siblings, and wanting to leave the estate and experience a normal life, even at the expense of excommunication from the family and loss of their portion of the inheritance. Frequently in trouble with the oldest child and the parents for fleeing the estate to explore the world of regular humans. They are less bothered by the presence of their mortal house attendants, but for the sake of appearances they assist their siblings in the torment.
Youngest: (TAKEN BY: horrorshow ) The youngest Berkley child is strangest of all, their comings and goings and activities a total mystery even to their family- rarely seen except for at mealtimes and shared studies, no one is quite sure what they're doing with their spare time. One thing is completely certain, this child would go to the grave despising mortals, and nobody knows why.
Seasoned House Attendants
The Seasoned Attendant: (OPEN)(16-24) This house attendant has been in The Berkley House for as long as they can remember. Their parents were employed by the Berkley's before their birth, racked up a considerable debt borrowing money, and died before they could pay it off. Their only child remains to tend the house and pay off their family's debt. This attendant knows the family has a secret, but also knows its best not to try to figure it out.
2: The Secret: (OPEN)(16-18)Two years goes by quickly for most, but for those with a secret it can be hauntingly slow. This house attendant was the youngest of many siblings in a poverty stricken family, a trade for a magic spell that gained them unfathomable fortune. Given to the Berkley family two years ago, they have learned from the seasoned attendant the ways of the strange house, and though they have been warned to keep to their work and mind their own business, they believe they have uncovered the dark secret of the Berkley house- and in secret have been practicing witchcraft on their own.
Newcomers
1: Fallen From Grace: (OPEN)(17-20) Previously belonging to a wealthy family of considerable social status, this newcomer was accustomed to a life of luxury. After dishonoring their family's name, their parents have sent them to work under a distant connection as a house attendant for a year. Filled with rage and rebellion, this will not be an easily learned lesson for the formerly carefree youth.
2: Born A Slave: (OPEN)(16-19) This newcomer is not new to the life of a house servant. Born to a very poor family, they were sold into slavery at a young age. They have been passed from house to house all over the world, but landed most recently in the service of the Berkley's. There is something undeniably different about their new masters, that much is clear from the first day. This attendant is very careful about prying, as they have learned the hard way in the past that they should mind their work and not their masters' personal lives.
The Sacrifice: (TAKEN BY apolla )(16-20) While not being sold into slavery or indebted to the Berkley's, this newcomer came about in a less traditional way. They had fallen in love with a former attendant of the Berkley house and maintained secret weekly meetings with them in the woods surrounding the property. Unfortunately, the Berkley's do not permit strangers on the property and therefore, the previous attendant was punished. However, desperate to let their lover experience freedom, this newcomer offered up their own services in exchange for their former flame to be released of their duties. Not here by force, this attendant is enslaved by choice, and is already planning their escape to be reunited with their other half. Little do they know, the Berkley's killed their former attendant even after the agreement was made, so as to keep their family secret safe.
Rules:
1. Mature themes allowed all remaining within the rules and guidelines of RPN
2. Literacy is required. I understand quality over quantity, but you should be giving people something to work with, maintain a fair amount of detail, and be able to keep up with what is going on. I am also hoping for fairly detailed character sheets.
3. Discord is going to be required for OOC due to this being a fairly convoluted plot with with interwoven character relationships of several varieties.
4. Drama encouraged between characters, 100% not allowed OOC.
5. I am going to shoot for a once per week minimum on posting frequency, more than that is okay, a little less than that is okay. I am extremely laid back, and you are encouraged to let me know if you're not going to be able to post for a while and we will accommodate you. Total ghosting after an extended period with no communication on your part will simply result in the game being continued without you.
6. Romance is encouraged, but be realistic!
So I am remaking this, since I never did anything with it last time, and I made it a lot different. Been sitting on this idea forever and telling myself it's a bit much for a roleplay but I'm going to try again anyway!
I'm going to use this tab for links when they're ready.
