Realistic or Modern Our Weird Little Town - Paranormal Mysteries

Shannon Trevor

One Thousand Club
Hopefield.

On name and first impressions alone, the town may seem like it's the ideal slice of Americana. White picket fences, an ice cream parlor filled with local teenagers and a movie drive-in still open for business

Beneath the surface however, the town has a corrupt and seedy underbelly. Smugglers, swindlers and ner' do wells have their own agendas and if you care to look a little harder, you'll see that something isn't quite right in Hopefield.

The average citizen may even acknowledge it, every town has its share of mystery and urban legend after all, but there's something beneath Hopefield's facade that is getting harder to ignore.

Hauntings, spectres in the night, creatures in the woods and unexplained disappearances have almost become a fact of life in Hopefield.

Rachel Porter; journalist, author, would-be amateur detective and Hopefield native has a keener interest in these stories than most. A sceptic of anything remotely paranormal, she has now taken matters into her own hands and decided to get to the bottom of the Hopefield Mysteries.

Despite the abundance of villains, shady landowners, would-be ghosts, creatures and the occassional old man in a Halloween costume, this is a lighthearted rp, in the vein of the old Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew books.

I'm looking for someone to partner with Rachel in her investigations.

This is right up my alley! I've got a few ideas about who can partner up with her:
  • The recent retiree/widow who can usually be found doing the crossword at the local coffee shop. She's bored, loves puzzles and probably knows a thing or two about the rumours.
  • The grumpy librarian who's always going on about how Rachel keeps requesting access to the restricted section. He secretly enjoys seeing her around because the library is usually dead empty otherwise, and it gets a little creepy late at night.
  • The teenager with a rebellious streak who keeps skipping school to go exploring around abandoned property. She's new in town, and is dying to learn more about the secrets it keeps.
  • The famous podcaster whose target audience consists of horror heads and conspiracy nuts. He doesn't actually believe in any of the rumours either, but whatever puts bread on the table, right?
I might end up using a few (or all!) of them in the story anyway, but excited to know what you think!

I actually love all of them!

They could all work with the setting and all feel like they belong in Hopefield.

If I had to choose, I think I'd favour either the librarian or the podcaster as Rachel's partner in daring-do but it's a tough choice!

In that case, I'd love to go with the librarian -- though I'm sure the other ones will find their way to the story one way or another ;)

How would you like to start? Do you do character sheets? And where do you like to start? Public threads, private messages, perhaps a Discord server? Anything goes for me! I personally like to just jump in mostly blind and kind of just improvise as we go -- while we plan out major plot points and potential subplots in the background, of course.

Hey howdy hey, been a while! I'd be totally down for this scenario, even have a character of two that'd fit right in.

What do you have in mind?
As for a plot, no clue atm, but perhaps we could cook something up. Now on the character front, I was thinking of filling the role of someone new in town. One of the old characters I had was a bit of a city slicker, specifically one that usually wound up rolling with the wrong crowd. Accustomed to petty theft, breaking and entering, and equipped with some street smarts he'd picked up along the way, I think he'd make a valuable ally to your snoop.
