Chieftess Katara

NPC

location

Formerly her cabin, now Aang's Iceberg

Fresh snow pressed against Katara's boot. The cabin was now a bright raindrop in the distance, the wood stacked against its wall, waiting for her return. Meanwhile, there it was. The Iceberg, looming like a beacon in the midst of her seas full of troubled thoughts.

Despite the thousand things crashing against each other in her mind, Katara had composed herself relatively well throughout Boscha's speeches. Or so she thought...

The truth was, the battle inside her was not a matter of belief. It was never hard to let the fox girl speak, never hard to entertain her words, and most of all, for Katara, she could only wonder.

How long?

For how long now, have reports come in about increasing dark spirit activity? For how long now, has the taste in the salt air changed as more Southern Tribe sailors come back home with only strange tales of shadow beasts lurking in the waters to make up for their empty nets? For how long now, has it been a nations-wide sign they, the old friends and now guardians of the Avatar, have been avoiding?

Worst of all, for how much longer will this overwhelming, fluttering feeling of hope last before her mind inevitably pokes holes enough to bleed it out?

Indeed, Katara was almost ashamed of how easy it was. From the moment she saw the flash of light that she now knew had produced Boscha, it was all too easy. As Boscha had talked, all her treasured memories of their time together with Aang had suddenly reached out and embraced her. As if the fox girl's words had themselves formed a key, unlocking what Katara only let herself feel away from everyone, shared only between her and the boy she once loved, six feet deep within ice.

It all felt like a dream. A time of her life that she'd never get back, a time that could only be passed down as a bedtime story, as an Ember Island play or immortalized as pages of a newly-reformed Fire Nation history textbook. The countless hours spent atop Appa, watching Aang do that air spinning trick for the umpteenth time. Zuko in his self-admitted worst form; hair, murderous tendencies and all. Hei-Bai, Kyoshi Island, the deserts, the sandbenders and most breath-taking yet terrifyingly of all, Wan Shi Tong's Library. Teaching Aang how to waterbed, surviving King Bumi's tests, riding the Omashu mailing system, traversing the Cave of Two Lovers, saving the little village with her as their Painted Ladyโ€ฆ

Then, Katara heard her daughter speak up. The river of nostalgia began to freeze over. The dream ended, replaced by the nightmare. The nightmare of facing the echoes of genocide, of losing an air bison, of being chased incessantly from sea to sea. The nightmare of witnessing the effects of the War, watching the innocent suffer under the wrath and thumb of one nation or another, the fear of losing a sibling, a friend or a lover to the forces of dark spirits or the old Fire Nation regime, still festering out there somewhere. Worse yet, facing Azula herself, the one name that could never be spoken in front of Zuko, despite the fact that her face is worn by the little girl he had decided to take under his wing all those years ago. And worst of all, the nightmare of losing a daughter and son, a niece and nephewโ€ฆ

When Hakoda joined in, that was it. She was angry. And proud, and fearful and hopeful, all at once. How could she not be? Her and Sokka's blood ran through their veins. In a different time, a different age, Katara knew she'd have accepted to lend this spirit a hand too, no matter the danger. But that time, her time was over. And for too long in the eyes of the world, so had the time of the Avatar.

Katara closed her eyes, leaning her head against the ice.

But Aang...you know I can't just send them out on a whim. Not like Gran-Gran had to do with us, with you, with the survival of our tribe at stake.

I know Boscha claims urgency, but what proof do I have that I won't be sending my children on some wild goose chase, Aang? What proof is there that you really are where Boscha says you are?

I might be able to convince Sokka and Suki. Toph won't be as easy and neither will Zuko or Mai for their daughters, especially for Himari as heir. Jet needs to know, if he's come back. For Lon Fa's sake. The Umiak elders will need to be consulted too, scroll and all. Hakoda is my son, my heir, and spirits forbid if anything happens...

Katara!
A gasp choked out of her. Was that...did she just hear that?

"Aang?"

It couldn't have been. It was so thin, so quiet that she could have easily mistaken it for the wind, or even her own mind. She blinked, focused on the glow of Aang's arrowhead, which seemed to glow impossibly bright for a moment.

Suddenly, Katara felt the hairs on her neck rise.

Behind her, the growls were deep, dark and tortured. She could only guess, but she estimated around half a dozen. All paid attention to her, and her alone.
Katara turned around slowly. Seven pairs of teeth as sharp as knives bared back at her, belonging to seven heads erupting from a large, single, tarlike canine body. Their wide, staring eyes were a maddening shade of white, jowls dripping with raw, angry spiritual hunger.

Bai chi. Or, as the locals call them, Hundred Tooth Hounds. The name was coined generations before her birth, thanks to the start of the Hundred Year War and the conflicts since guaranteeing their place in the South Pole. But these past few years, decades even, their presence had amplified, to the point where a new phenomenon had started to appear here in the South, something Katara knew the people of Umiak called the Everstorm. Thankfully, the night held no sign of a giant, billowing shadow storm of dark spirits.
Nonetheless, this Bai chi was not alone. From the right and left of the Iceberg, others stalked around the glacier. Most were individual, others had fused into two or three groups of multiple heads, no more than four. All converged past her and the lone seven-headed Bai chi in the opposite direction, picking up a terrifying pace towards the bright raindrop in the distance.
Katara turned a deadly shade of white. No. No, no, no, the cabin. The cabin! Children!

The moment her hand left the iceberg, the attack began. The closest outer head strained out first. Jaws snapped for her arm, but the cold, cutting slice of her water tendril was too fast. No blood came out, only a spurting trail of dark ichor. But the next three heads immediately made up for the loss, splitting free from the original into their own bodies.

She was surrounded. Katara split her own tendril, managing to whip away the first two. The third leapt and buried its corrupted teeth into her flesh, a cry of pain choked out of both of them as Katara regained enough composure to reform her tendril and lash the shadowy canine to the ground. Feeling gravity starting to dissipate just as well as the dark spirit feet away, Katara reached out to steady herself against the Iceberg. Her head swirled from side to side, heart pounding.

She was cornered. Yet to her surprise, the Bai chi did not leap. Instead, what remained of them stayed just as alert and angry as she was. As if they were waiting for her to make the next move. As if they themselves ould not approach.

It's as if...they know something I don't.

Katara followed the intensity of their gazes, zeroing in on her own hand. Eyes widening, she realized the ice underneath had been glowing, brighter than she'd ever seen it.

Tears began to swell. Through blurred vision, she saw his glowing arrowhead, and for the first time since the battle with Ozai, his eyes. Frozen closed, yet she could still make out the birth of a glow shining underneath.

It was not Aang, not really. It seemed to only be the smallest spark of the Avatar within him, but Katara did not care. After years of silence, praying for a sign, for closure, here it was. Aang was not dead. She had been right to preserve him, right to believe when almost no one else did. He may not even know it, but he was protecting her.

Katara looked back at the Bai chi. The tears had died down, but despair nonetheless gripped her heart.

These were not entirely mindless beasts. They were still circled around her, but a safe distance away from any tendril she could make. They could not approach, but she could not attack, lest she was willing to sever her tie with the Iceberg. Even if she managed to kill them all with one good arm, it would not be without more injury, more Bai chi to fend off. It was a clever stalemate.

"Hakoda! Lon Fa! Zhao, Soyou, please! They're coming! Protect yourselves!"

It was useless to cry out. The deafening darkness answered her and told her this. She was simply too far away.

Katara turned towards the iceberg, her head once again leaning against it, a silent tear falling across her cheek. Protect them, Aang. Please, we need you. Protect them, give them strength. Please...

  • who let the dogs out?

Darkness was alive. Shifting, stalking, panting. The cold, tundra air curdled in their mouths. The snow gnawed at their feet. But as always, they were tireless. What were once perhaps the noble faces of seekers of truth, were now the grinning muzzles of depravity. Distended, corrupted and driven by one, terrible mind. Like moths to the flame, few became more, joined together in a ravenous, degenerate hunt for pure, spiritual energy.
It was not a giant wave of the Everstorm. Eight of them had fused into two, equal tarlike bodies, each led by their respective canine centerheads. The other five were individuals. All were no bigger than the average mortal dog. But what was important was that this split-off numbered greater than the one that was forced to fall behind before, in the icy face of Raava's charge. The scroll and its bearer had been fortunate. But not this time.

The night's silence was returned in kind. The individuals crept into action. The first two prowled at the cabin's entrance, while the remaining three leapt with deadly grace onto the roof.

Thump. Dull, heavy, but nothing that could not be shrugged off as the work of the northern wind. Claws unsheathed from their prisons, while from underneath, it was nothing but the eerie creaking and splintering of wood.

Silence. Shadow flickered across two of the cabin's windows overlooking the dining room as the last pair of canine centerheads took their positions...

If the humans were alert, perhaps the earlier noise could have raised alarm bells. If one dared, they could look out the window and there their last warning would be. Pairs of gleaming, ghostly eyes staring back, telling to stay away from the windows because---

With a blood-curdling howl, glass shattered. One centerhead Bai chi barreled in after the other. Within moments, the two centerheads were in the dining room, each of their four heads snapping and growling. Both defused instantly, melting back into eight snarling bodies. Another howl summoned the presence of the two Bai chi reinforcements guarding the entrance. Before the humans knew it, ten pairs of crazed, soulless eyes zeroed in on their prey, rearing to go...

This was it. Prepared or unprepared. Suspecting or unsuspecting, with nothing but their bending, the nearest weapon, their wits, or all three, the battle was on!

Lon Fa

location

Katara's Cabin.

interactions

Mention: Everyone || Interaction: Nomura, Spirit Doggo

Nomura's attempt at lightening Lon Fa's mood was quickly snuffed by the sounds of scraping and creaking of wood directly above the pair. Lon Fa, having already made it to the bathroom to water bend the mess into the sink and out of the floorboard, quickly looked up in confusion.

The cabin never made a noise like that. Ever. Sure, the winds certainly got brutal, especially this high up, but this wasn't wind. Bringing her gaze back down, she looked at her cousin, "As much as I would love to endlessly fire snowballs at Zhao's face, I think we-โ€

There wasn't enough time. Her stern suggestion was cut off by an animalistic cry she had never heard before. A terrible feeling nestled its way deep in Lon Fa's gut, immediately followed by the sound of glass shattering. The dining room..

The others.

Lon Fa gulped, bouncing quietly in place before speaking up, "I'm going to get weapons." She didn't have time to waste. Her cousin had seen battle before, and she respected him for it. Lon Fa knew whatever he did, it would be the right call.. Hopefully. It was for this reason that she didn't try to suggest something for Nomura to do. Instead, she secretly hoped he would follow behind her to help carry as many weapons as possible. Anything to help the group defend themselves.

With this in mind, Lon Fa swiftly made her way through the hallway, nearly skidding to a halt in front of a harmless-looking linen closet. Opening the door, she fumbled for the secret latch her mother repeatedly reminded her of every single trip they took to this very cabin.

"Do not use these weapons for anything other than hunting, and defending our home, do you understand? These are not toys.. your training with your Papa must've helped instill this."

"Yes, Mama.."

Moments that transpired so long ago echo in her mind like they happened yesterday, her hands nimbly locating the discreet latch underneath the bottom-most shelf. Putting her weight on the balls of her feet, Lon Fa was now fully squatting as the hidden door creaked open towards her.

The water bender quickly bounced up, pulling the heavy wooden door open to discover an array of her tribe's hunting weapons, as well as a few machetes and broadswords. Dust had clearly collected on most of them, but that was quickly about to change. The notion made Lon Fa almost.. giddy. It had been so long since the girl had been able to put her training into use.

Cursing under her breath, the young woman quickly realized her favorite pair of hook swords would not be found in this musty closet. Instead, her blue eyes gravitated towards one of the spears, standing tall with three others in the back of the small weapons closet. So, she decided to take three, along with two machetes, and one traditional water tribe club. They were clunky in her grasp, no doubt, but she knew her friends would need all the help they could get.

With two machetes held in one hand, and the spears held snug between her forearm and bicep of each arm, the club resided in Lon Fa's right hand. Turning around, she made eye contact with her cousin, handing him a spear and machete, leaving her with two spears, a machete, and a club. No words were spoken, but she knew that Nomura would help her.

Lon Fa didnโ€™t leave him much of an option, carefully walking towards the archway that would grant her access to the stand-off.

The sounds were extremely unsettling. Low, rumbling growls. Heavy, hot, panting. Wet glops of drool falling onto the wooden floor. Razor-sharp claws uncaringly dragging along the place her friends had just passed through merely hours ago..

Turning so that her back was pressed against the wall, she took a deep breath, before carefully peering around the side of the archway. What met Lon Faโ€™s curious gaze was not anything she had ever seen before. Boscha spoke of the dark spirits, but the teen didnโ€™t think they would arrive so soon..

Boscha. Is that who theyโ€™re after? The scroll?

Another sinking feeling. She and her brother were alone together. Lon Fa was confident in Hakodaโ€™s skill, but will he need her help anyhow?

As soon as the realization dawned on her, Lon Fa whipped her head back to face her cousin, using her now free hand to silently gesture to the bedroom across the hall. The same room that Boscha and the scroll were in.

Whether Nomura understood or not, Lon Fa decidedly turned back around, head craning out to observe the scene. Find an opening. Most of the people in the room could bend their way out of this, but Lon Fa couldnโ€™t, in good faith, not at least try to offer weapons. It seemed her friends were practically surrounded by eight, snarling beasts that wanted each of their heads. Bright blue eyes landed on the only non bender in the room.

Kameko.

Two spears, one machete, and one club were in her possession. It would be up to her to get these weapons across the room in enough time, while keeping everyone in tact. No pressure.

Her thoughts were halted by a snarl, and the sudden, fierce eye contact she and one of the dark spirits made from across the room.

From then on, everything happened in a flash. Shadows blurred as Lon Fa sprinted towards the beast, crouching to drag the weapons along the wooden floor for any lucky soul to snatch. She specifically aimed the back of the spear towards Kameko, knowing she would more likely do well with it due to its long-standing tradition in the water tribe.

Now, holding the last spear, designed with a modernized, razor-sharp metal tip, Lon Fa used her many years of combat and hunting training to her advantage:

With proper hand placement, Lon Fa jumped as high as she possibly could, bringing her spear back as she lunged after the terrifying beast. Despite her efforts, the creature was higher, mouth wide open and ready to snap at her from above. Lon Fa saw this as an opening, willing the teen to thrust her weapon down its throat. An impressive move, no doubt.

However, gravity was not on her side, and the pair eventually came back down. The force of her attack was enough for the spirit to fall onto its back, taking her with it.

Lon Fa grunted, her body screaming at her as she mustered up all of her strength to steady her footing, lodging the spear deeper into it.

โ€œAgh! Stop. MOVING!โ€ Her curls were wild, braids swaying as she fought against the rabid spirit. Her body screamed as the beast fought for its survival, claws digging into her arms, scratching and clawing with enough force to make her wonder if it had more fight left.

However, with one final shove, a whimper left the spirit before the thrashing body beneath her went limp. Standing herself up, each foot on either side of the dogโ€™s body, she panted, yanking out her spear (which was now covered in an unnervingly black goop.) Both of her arms bled, but she didnโ€™t feel much pain at all, thanks to the adrenaline coursing through her veins. They werenโ€™t deep enough to scar, but she couldnโ€™t ignore the ticklish feeling of the blood running down her arms. Lifting one up, she rolled her eyes, โ€œGreat. Add it to the list.โ€

Hakoda smiled hearing his name from Boscha and her response to him. She was really making it hard to be suspicious of her being so sweet even with his stubborn streaks with her being so sweet and there was truth in her words. "Maybe, it is certainly what i am thinking, certainly make taking their annoying habits much easier." He added half jokingly in his description of his family. He watched her for a moment, making sure she seemed comfortable and sleep before moving to leave.

He was just about to place his hand on the door before something made him pause. He didnt know what it was maybe it was too quiet, maybe it was a noise to soft or too brief that he wasnt sure he heard. Whatever it was it made the hairs on the back of his neck come on end and felt the rush of his flight or flight kick. He barely turned back around before he heard for sure, a loud cry from the other side of the window that made his blood run cold. "Boscha! Move away from the..." He went to say as his eyes finally looked ou the windo and saw a shadow creature seemed to shot towards the window and to him.

He moved to fighting stance, his lft hand moving to uncork his water skin while his right moved to bend the water in it. However it was too late. There was crash and growl as the black thing crashed though the window showering him in glass and wood followed by it barely corporeal but still weighty body, sending him back hard on his back. He groaned as pained rushed through his back and back of his head. He just barely had the presence of mind to move his right hand to were what could be described at the dark spirits neck prevening it from biting down at his neck.

Dark spirit was not detered by the faliure of its surprise attack and attempted to claw at Hokoda, he could feel his cloak became torn and soon felt it reach his skin. "Boscha... Get out of here! Find the others! " he called out as he struggled trying hard to think of away out of this predicament. He was strong but it was heavy and determined. He moved his left arm to support the right and pushed hard as he could, lifing the creature of him as far as he could, just enough to place his leg on his stomach and have enough purchase to kick hard. The creature was sending flying hard against the wall behind Hakoda, stunning it if only briefly.

"Come on, Hakoda..." He said to himself forcing himself not to rest but to force himself up back on his feet and go on the offensive. He got up not as quick as he hopped but still had the freedom to go for his water skin as the spirit also recovered and made another attempt at a leaping attack. This time Hakoda was ready, bending a tendril of water out of his water skin and sending it like a whip at the spirirts exposed under belly intirupting its attack and cutting its attack short. It cried like an injured bear-dog once again stunned.

Nomura

Location

The Cabin

Interactions

Lon Fa, Hakoda, Boscha || Mention: Everyone else, I guess.

The noise on the roof. The way it creaked and shifted. The pitter patter of padded feet. Nomura's eyes widened, slowly tuning out his cousin. It seems she caught on quickly too. For the next words that spoke out of Nomura's mouth were filled a certain trepidation as his face slowly morphed and hardened, eyes still wide with surprised.

"We're not alone."

Nomura instantly spun on the sound, shifting his feet and bringing his arms up in defense. Whatever it was had brute-forced through the windows and there were multiple of them. Feral beasts. Dogs or wolves growling and snapping at anything that moved. The hallway was somewhat safe and gave the swordsman the ability to peer towards the creatures. Dark spirits they were indeed. There had been legends and folklore, such that Nomura barely tried to remember at this point. But if they had the shape of such beasts, then they behaved as such as well.

A tactical advantage.

Nomura's ears perked up at the sound of his cousin speaking. Lon Fa was retrieving weapons. Good but how exactly? His weapons were left with his bag which sat across the other side of the cabin, and the best he had on him was a small knife strapped to his boot. He could make do with it, but there were simply too many. Perhaps if he focused on guiding them towards the hallway, the thinner space would force them to come one or two at a time. Much easier to handle and deal with there.

Nomura followed Lon Fa, not letting his sister out of his sight. His eye glowing a steady blue He watched her work, opening the closet and revealing new weapons. Of course. A hidden compartment. How could he be so blind? How could he forget? His hands outstretched and clasped the spear and machete. Nomura nodded. This would work plenty. He began to get to work. Slidding the machete into his belt before setting the spear leaning against a side of the hallway, Nomura tore off his shirt and over-shirt--his torso completely barren of any clothe--before wrapping both as much as he could around his arm before tightening it. An improvised brace, one that would be able to deal with the teeth of the dogs. Nomura had fought dogs before and fought without armor. In either case, you needed to find armor and weapons of any kind. Getting into a physical contest was a bad idea unless you had the jump on them or the upper hand.

Before his ears picked up sounds from behind. The other rooms. The same rooms where Hakoda and Boscha had gone away to.

There were sounds of banging, of struggle against the wood of the cabin. While Lon Fa went one way, Nomura went another. There were two chief ideologies that came with dealing with groups of people, teams meant to work together. Any man who falls behind gets left behind or no man gets left behind. Nomura subscribed to the latter, and there was no way his cousin Hakoda and Boscha were becoming dog food. Lon Fa would be alright for a few moments. She was with the main group, with everyone else. They needed to grab any stragglers and bring them round to the larger group. Nomura soon cupped his hands over his mouth, yelling to those in the living area.

"FREEZE THE FLOOR! THROW THE SPICES IN THEIR FACES! DISORIENT THEM! USE TIGHT SPACES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!"

Direct orders. The only advice he could send. Perhaps they could drive the dogs off by using any spices they had stored away, mess with their potentially sensitive nostrils, or, if the liquids inside the huge pot for the soup or the snow outside could be used to soak and freeze the floors. The wolves' feet would find no traction and be sitting ducks. But was there enough time? Could Lon Fa do it? Perhaps the spice strategy might be better, especially since the kitchen was so close. Any area where the group could force the dogs to fight them one on one would be good too.

No matter what, he would have to trust them to come up with a strategy. This was all he could do.

He had to help Hakoda.

Turning away and picking up his spear, Nomura sprinted, carrying the spear and keeping low before leaping forward. His shoulder braced against the door and slamming against it, shattering it wide open. His eyes darted about the room. His peripheral vision picked up on Hakoda's prone form, the blue water tribe uniform easy to pick out. Boscha a little easier to see, clad in her garments and sitting the bed. And directly in front of Nomura? The stunned creature, another one of these Bai chi. Nomura's eye turned a stark white. It glowed, like a predator in the night.

There would be no reprieve for the beast. No hesitation from Nomura. If the creature had any self-preservation instinct, it might have felt fear. For there was no fear in Nomura. Only simple purpose. He sought its destruction. Nomura ran and thrusted the spear forward, downward towards the creature's throat. He aimed for the one place to end it and end it quick. To make it bleed. To make it choke on its own black ichor.

Nomura would see it through. He had to. If he missed, if this creature got up before he could reach across the room, this would be all for naught. It would be upon him in moments.

"GET OUT AND GET TO THE HALLWAY! BOTH OF YOU! NOW!"

Nomura almost snarled. Not to them. But to the beast he sought to kill.

Kameko

Child of Sokka & Suki

location

Katara's Cabin

Kameko grumbled as she hoisted the large dirty pot up to better scrub it. Natural born scrubbing brush bender, that was her. After a few moments of angrily scrubbing, the ferocity of attacks lessened as a rhythm started up. She started to sway a little as the music in her spirit started to echo through her mind.
"Yuve yuve yu." She sang softly, finding a little peace in the tedious task before her.
It wouldn't last.
It took a moment for Kameko to register the noises from the roof, but by the time she did, the howling and crashing inside were of more immediate concern. The young non-bender exclaimed with a word her parents and aunt would be very disappointed in hearing her say as the monstrous creatures landed in the dinning area. Kameko had dreamed up plenty of monsters for good ghost stories, but the real thing was certainly more terrifying in person. One of the multi-headed spirits leveled it's malevolent eyes on the frightened teen and lunged at her. Kameko's mind was blank with fear, no thought of what to do, so her body did what came naturally. Smash. Grabbing on to the pot she had been scrubbing, she whirled around with all her might, slamming the heavy pot into one of the beast's heads with all her might. A ringing sound filled the cabin as Kameko fought to maintain her balance with the reverberating pot in her hands. The monster stumbled away, but didn't look to be down for the count.
With some semblance to coherent thought coming back to her, Kameko hefted the pot to go in for another blow when she spotted Lon Fa charging in, dragging actual weapons. Hoping this would work, Kameko lobbed the pot mostly ineffectively at the dark spirit before running to join her cousin. Dropping into a slid on her knees, she closed the last few feet to the weapons "chest" to retrieved the spear that seemed to be left for her. Her timing was off, causing her hands to miss the weapon, and for it to smack into her forehead.
"Oh come on." She growled as stood up, grasping the spear.
Leveling the spear tip out towards the attack spirits, Kameko considered her next move. Lon Fa went for an absolutely beautiful dive bomb, that ended with a possibly dead spirit. Could she do that? Probably end up with a belly flop. But guidance from on high was granted. Well...guidance from down the hall. This being one of those situation she would actually follow her brother's orders, Kameko's gaze swept the room till it landed on the spice rack. So, deal with the threat by making a mess. She could do that.
Putting her spear under her arm to better reinforce it, Kameko sprinted for the spices. She kept her spear leveled to possibly skewer any charging attacks.

Hakoda (I), Nomura (I), Yลซka (M)

"Hakoda!"

Boscha's hand stretched out, flying glass nicking at her fingertips. Her back was against the wall, as far from the window as possible.

Sleep was a distant memory now, pushed back further and further by the animalistic alarm coursing through her veins. The scroll was held tighter and tighter against her chest, as a sinking feeling pierced her stomach.

There was no doubt now. The dark spirits roaming these ice plains had imprinted themselves on her and the scroll. This ambush only proved that their strength and speed were not the only things that had increasedโ€”their level of consciousness did too. A dangerous confidence festered inside, the kind that had driven them to pierce through the veil of the Iceberg's protection.

She did not want to leave him. Not alone, facing a Bai Chi snapping at his throat. One of her first friends ever and within hours of meeting, he was already forced to fight for his life. In fact, they all were; sounds of chaos and claws emanated from nearly every corner of the cabin.

Heart torn but body nonetheless prepared, Boscha watched as Hakoda kicked the beast away. His water tendril rose from his armor of aquatic skin like a viper, snapping the creature's attack in half.

Her ears pricked, hearing Nomura many moments before he barreled in. Half-dressed but fully armed, a spear in hand and a fierce look in his eye.

Her heart pounding, Boscha took the opportunity and leapt from the bed. A breath later, shadow flickered at the corner of her eye. The sound of powerful hindlegs grinding against roof and the crunch of snow. The whistle of air, the growing snarl as it vaulted over a portal of broken glass. Boscha's long, fox claws unsheathed almost a moment too late. Midway in the air, her body half-turned, she ripped through shadow-like corpulency as it clawed for her. The rooftop Bai Chi yelped, dark ichor flowing from its eyes. The force of her hit made them both nosedive to the ground in opposite directions, rolling quickly to a stop.

Boscha got to her feet as a cough rose and let itself out, several spots promising a good bruising. The Avatar scroll in one hand, Boscha reached out her other one to Hakoda, trying her best to quickly obey Nomura's somewhat appropriately frightening order.

"Hakoda, let's goโ€”"

Boscha winced, the sliver of pain from her wrist cutting her off. She tried to redress herself, but she was sure it was too late; Hakoda must have noticed. If not one, then the other. As they scrambled out of the spare room, she frantically looked over her shoulder and spotted the rooftop Bai Chi she had temporarily immobilized. But for how long?

"Behind you, Nomuraโ€”that one is still alive! Don't forget it!"

Boscha turned back around, trying to ignore the astringent sting of the other injury, crimson trickling down her right leg. She didn't dare look down, but she could already feel a corrosive element settle in. The closest room to take refuge in was Katara's. Boscha heard the rattle of its door handle on the other side, as if someone had just lifted their hand away...

interactions: zhao || mentions: yuka

A multitude of questions were running throughout the Fire Nation heirโ€™s mind as she stood in the dining room helping Zhao set out the bedding for everyone per Kataraโ€™s orders. Her mind wandered back to her earlier conversation with Yuka, her mouth settling into a small frown as she laid the bedding out on the ground. She couldnโ€™t shake the uneasiness that had settled over her consciousness, wondering what she had done wrong to elect such a cold demeanour from her younger sister. All Himari had wanted was to help Yuka clean up and ease her worry from the prospect of an adventure to save the avatar per Boschaโ€™s words.

She racked her brain to try to find the culprit but try as she may, she simply couldnโ€™t figure out what she had done wrong this time.
Offered her help to clean Yuka up? Check.
Willingness to listen to Yukaโ€™s concerns about her going on the adventure with everyone? Also check.

Standing tall she let out a tired sigh. She supposed it didnโ€™t really matter what she had done wrong, even if Himari did manage to figure out what she had done wrong it wouldnโ€™t change anything. Yuka had been emotionally distant from her for years now, Himari reaching out a helping hand might have been too optimistic on her part.

Perfect princess and I canโ€™t get my own sister to like me..

It didnโ€™t even matter now, remembrance of Kataraโ€™s strong disagreement towards Boscha and the idea of sending them all on a search to save Aang. Himari would never say it out loud, mainly due to her inner fear of the chieftess but she would be lying if she said she didnโ€™t find Kataraโ€™s disapproval the teensy, tiniest, bit hypocritical. After all Katara, Aang, Sokka and the rest of them were all younger than most of them were now when they were off fighting in a war. The circumstances were different, sure, but the point still stood. And if Boscha was telling the truth then not sending them would likely be a huge mistake.

But of course Himari, much like the others, knew how stubborn Katara could be when she already had her mind set on something. There was no way they would be leaving on any life changing adventures anytime soon. She and Yuka would be back in the Fire Nation before Himari knew what hit her and she couldnโ€™t ignore the subtle way that pulled at her heart and disappointed her. It wasnโ€™t that she didnโ€™t want to go home, it was just..complicated.

So caught up in her own thoughts she failed to pay attention to those around her, oblivious to the banter going on between Zhao and Nomura, unaware of the fact that somehow she would get roped into their shenanigans despite playing no part in it.

The soft thump of a pillow hit the back of her head, completely pulling the princess out of her mind and away from her rambling thoughts. A look of confusion etched across her face, golden eyes looking behind her to the pillow laid on the floor and Nomuraโ€™s retreating words blaming Zhao for throwing the pillow at her.

She glanced up at Zhao, meeting his gray eyes for a moment. Did he want to have a pillow fight? She held the pillow in her hand weighing her options.

Himari could scold him for being childish, that Auntie Katara had left them in charge of setting up bedding, not using the bedding for children's sleepover activities. That would be the mature thing to do.

Or

She could allow herself the opportunity to have some much needed fun.

Her lips tilted up in a smirk as she made her decision. Gripping the pillow tight in one hand she reared her hand back, building momentum, before she chucked the pillow towards Zhao aiming for his face.

Nomura (M), Himari (I)

Who knew a lifetime of catching fish could gift someone such solid reflexes? Luckily, when it came to his nimble opponent, it was not all that surprising for Zhao. In his hand, a second pillow had lain in the ready, to avenge his fallen brother and to cushion what was sure to be Nomura's swift answer.

But no such attack came.

This time, the surprise was clear. Pulling a face, Zhao playfully threw the second pillow anyway. He watched it intentionally fly a few hairs off Nomura's retreating head, before turning to the Northern Water Tribe boy's true target all along: Himari.

His first instinct was to check her expression. Would there be offense? Shock? Royal indignity at being forcibly drawn into such childish antics? Had she ever been in a pillow fight? With the fall of the militaristic old regime, pillow-fighting must have surely made a comeback in the home of the Fire Nation royal family. Or was it too much to assume royal dogs could be taught new tricks?

Unfortunately, the Earth Kingdom wrestler would only be spared a moment to meet the princess' ember eyes before a cushion of white zeroed in on his face. Chuckling in pleasant surprise, Zhao only succeeded in turning halfway, recoiling as his defending arm rose to bear the brunt of the impact.

The pillow fell to the ground, while his hands were up in surrender. A glance over at the dining table told Zhao that perhaps a truce would be beneficial. Merciful, even to the other pair trying to actually execute Katara's orders.

"Alright, you win, you win, Zhao has lost."

With a smile, he grabbed the pillow and made a show of placing it where it was supposed to be all along: at the head of the nearest mat.

It worked. For the next few minutes in tandem with the crackling of the hearth, he fixed up bedding again, spread blankets, fluffed pillows and put them into position. Once her back was turned however, a large blanket grew steadily downwards in Zhao's grasp. Then, with as much stealth as his big frame could muster, he crept up to Himari, the bedspread gaping wide, ready to ensnare...

Who Let The Dogs Out?

Zhao & Himari

Zhaoโ€™s immediate surrender made Himari want to chuckle, though she held it in. Perhaps he realized himself that having a pillow fight now of all times wouldnโ€™t be the smartest idea, especially with the others in the dining space actually focusing on doing their tasks. Instead the pair went back to work, setting up the bedding for everyone, and in her mind she silently called dibs on the mat furthest from the roaring fire. Her body was already naturally warm due to being a firebending, the last thing she wanted was to wake up covered in sweat from overheating.

With the last of the bedding laid out she suddenly felt a wave of tiredness, tempted to go ahead and call it a night. She was heavily considering it, the softness of the blankets practically calling to her, and she would have listened and allowed herself to succumb to her sleepiness if not for someone distracting her.

โ€œWhat the-โ€ Just before Zhao could snatch her up into the blanket Himari side stepped, watching him end up where she had just been. Raising an eyebrow at him she backed away, just in case he tried anything else.

โ€œYou know you're not as quiet as you think you are.โ€ She teased.

Suddenly a strange noise caught her attention and she was turning her attention elsewhere. She stared out the dining room window, wondering if she had imagined the noise. They were in the middle of the south pole, it could have easily been the wind making weird sounds but something in her told her that wasnโ€™t the case.

Himari looked at Zhao, โ€œYou heard that too right?โ€

There was almost no time to answer. Zhao had only just braced himself from Himariโ€™s side-step when suddenly, a crescendo of broken glass sang across the room. In a fraction of a minute, a burgeon of teeth, claw and shadow poured in like an ocean wave, threatening to swallow Zukoโ€™s daughter whole.

โ€œHimari!โ€

Like a lifeline against the snapping jaws of the dark sea, Zhao shot his arm out and found hers. The force of his pull saved her by a hair, sending her to safety behind him. Moments later, the two multi-headed creatures melted into ten. The chorus of warped, deep snarls erupting from their throats joined the crackling of the hearth.

Stillness gripped the room. Prey and predator each locked eyes. Zhao's feet and legs sealed themselves into stance since yesterday, aching for the power of the earth to course through his veins. But they would find no relief; the earth was packed under miles of ice. To add insult to injury, there was no signature chained dual-blade, no carry-on dagger, no throwing stars for him to metalbend to his side. Why would there have been? All of his usual weaponry had stayed in Umiak. Heโ€™d left them there, in honor of Kataraโ€™s long-standing wish that there be no instruments of war in the presence of the Avatar.

Katara!

The worry and realization packed itself into a single lurch of the heart. Because that was all his body could afford to spare for the Chieftess. The rest was frustratingly split seven different ways, wrestling the urge to bound after the beasts before they could reach the rest. One charged for the kitchen, another for the dining table, two for the hall andโ€”

There was barely time to look. Raging shadow fell over him like an executionerโ€™s ax. The blanket rose and gaped wide a second time, managing to ensnare and smother the dark spiritโ€™s blazing silhouette.

Bloody badgermole, this thing isโ€ฆ.!

It was ferocious. Ten times more rabid, ten times more savage and bloodthirsty than any beast he had ever witnessed. Gravity beckoned them into its bludgeoning embrace, but Zhao knew that if he answered its call, the snarling, vicious jaws of this dark creature would have him in no time at all.

For the next few pulsating, chaotic moments, it was a battle of balance and control to keep it contained within thick cloth. Despite the force of the creatureโ€™s initial charge, experience in the ring reassured the White Wolverine that its weight was nothing he had not faced countless times before. The opportunity coursed through his veins, bringing to life the stance his body had already prepared. In a space of a breath, one foot stepped out diagonally, while the inner shoulder dipped low, taking upon itself the full weight of the flailing, convulsing mass. The rest of his body followed suit; his inner hip in place, the creature was flung over and slammed into the ground in one, rotating, fluid, familiar motion of strength.

Breathless, a litany of growls and grunts drew his attention away. Littering the floor were a sprawl of weapons Lon Fa had left in her wake. Nomura's shirtless spice idea rang across the room, reminding him of who had been in charge of clearing the food away. To his relief, Kameko had indeed emerged from the kitchen and was retreating back into it, a proper spear now cradled under her arm. Yลซka was nowhere to be found. Instead of frustration, Zhao found her apparent absence to be a source of cold comfort. Royally rich in all but her father's new form of firebending, Azula's daughter most likely was where she was most useful: locked up in a room somewhere. If these savage, wraithlike creatures still managed to get to her...well. What else would there be to say? To him, it was simple. She shouldn't have locked herself in.

Her sister, on the other hand, faced a different situation entirely. Zhao felt his earthbending itch reflect her firebending one, both constrained by the environment around them. Any moment now, the dark spirit staring her down would attack and she would be virtually defenseless. Zhao spied the closest weapon to her, which really wasn't that close at all: a wooden club.

His long leg lurched forward, but no kick ever came out of it. Because right then, coarse, corrupted claws latched onto the broad of his back.

"What the---why, you damn, dirty, dirt-pushing---!"

The rest was lost to a stiff groan. Shoots of pain burgeoned across his body like wild poison ivy. It was a rookie mistake, turning one's back on an opponent like that. Was the White Wolverine truly losing his touch? Well no, quite the opposite really. His sense of touch clearly was still as sharp as ever; as sharp as the creature's talons now sinking into his Earth Kingdom robe, prodding painfully into the flesh around his shoulder blades.

Twisting around didn't help. Neither did the idea of waving his arms back to get it off; the spirit was a snapper. Panic rose but Zhao flattened it, eyes wide with challenge and mind racing for a way out. At his very core clawed the urge to break off a piece of earth and just send it hurling towards the spirit like a hundred-pound piece of chocolate. But as an earthbender miles away from any earth---wood would have to do.

So, with a bit of a war cry and a glance over the shoulder, Zhao bolted backwards. The hearth's flames fluttered as the mutt slammed against its wall with a resounding thud.

Claws loosened. The stunned body went limp, a rare silence filling the air. Zhao felt relief flood into his heart.

That is, until he heard the beginnings of a snarl...

The deafening sound of glass shattering behind her caused Himari to swivel on her feet in a panic, her eyes watching as a dark substance began pouring in through the window filled with teeth, and claws. It wasnโ€™t like anything she had seen before, and in her shock she almost allowed herself to be swallowed by this animalistic creature if not for Zhao pulling her away to safety.

She stood behind him now, silently reminding herself to thank him once they were in the clear. Eyes watched as the large creature split apart, breaking off into multiple smaller wolf-like animals, a handful of them running off to different parts of the cabin. She worried for the otherโ€™s that didnโ€™t have any warning of the danger heading their way, but first she had to worry about the danger that was right in front of her, showing its ugly head and baring razor sharp teeth.

What are they? Why are they here of all places?

Could it be the scroll, or Boscha that they were after? And if that was the case then why?

She didn't have time to think and come up with any logical answers, the deep growling and predatory stare of one of the beasts honing in on her forcing her into action. Instinctively she took on a defensive stance, her feet sliding against the floor, and her hands raising into position on both of her sides ready to attack. Moments felt like minutes as she and the beast stared off against one another.

Realistically the young firebender could easily take the wolf down using her bending, that she was sure of. Himari hadnโ€™t spent countless, excruciating hours honing her skills to be bested by one animal. What she wasnโ€™t sure of though, was if she could avoid causing any damage to the cabin. Best case scenario was she could bring the beast down without setting anything else on fire, but that was a big if and she didnโ€™t feel comfortable taking that chance while everyone else was still trapped inside fighting their own battles.

Her body itched to use her bending, having to suppress her natural urges in the face of danger was not her idea of a good time. A firebender being trapped in a natural fire starter was almost comical and she was sure once the situation was cleared sheโ€™d have a good laugh at the irony of it all. Vaguely she wondered if this was how Zhao felt every time they all took the trip here. No earth in sight for him to bend. Truly a shame, she thought. No bending, and she couldnโ€™t even rely on her dual swords that she always carried with her. Like the others she had forgoed bringing any weapons on the ceremonial journey out of respect for Kataraโ€™s wishes. If only she had something..

Shouts came from the hallway and suddenly Lon fa appeared, tossing weapons in for them to use. Finally a saving grace!

Himari took a quick glance over towards the different weapons that had been provided, a machete, a club, and a spear. Ideally the spear or the machete would have been the most ideal but both were too far away for her to reach, she would have been pounced on by the feral beast before she could get to either. That left the wooden club as her only choice.

A shout of pain from Zhao took her own wolfโ€™s attention span off of her for a mere moment, but a moment was all Himari needed. As soon as the beastโ€™s dark eyes were off of her she bolted. She ran as quickly as she could, hearing the animal running behind her. She slid to her knees, her hands grabbing ahold of the club and lifting it. The shadow of the beast loomed over her, teeth and claws threatening to tear her apart in seconds. Himari was quicker. She lifted the club, swinging it behind her, turning her upper body to follow suit and gain as much momentum as possible. With as much force as she could muster she swung the club, connecting it to the side of the beastโ€™s jaw. An assortment of whimpers fell out of its mouth as it slid against the floor, seemingly defeated.

Dropping the club to her feet she averted her attention to Zhao who was still struggling against his own opponent. From her position she could see that the creature had lodged itself onto his back. She wouldnโ€™t make it in enough time to help tear the beast away before it managed to injure Zhao any further.

โ€œZHAO, DUCK!โ€

Deciding to let go of her previous hesitation in order to help a friend, Himari waited for Zhao to follow her orders and once the mangy beast was in her sight she raised her hands. As long as she kept her fire relatively small and focused solely on the beast at hand things would go smoothly and the cabin wouldnโ€™t go up in flames, right? There was no time to chance that theory either way and she threw a quick punch, sending the ball of fire straight for the beast and effectively knocking it off Zhao's back.

There was no time for victory, however, when Himari had failed to completely eliminate her own personal threat. She heard it before she saw it, deep vengeful growls filling her ears and informing her that her fight still wasnโ€™t over. Her hand snatched the club back into her grasp, ready to swing on the creature threatening her again. Unfortunately for her this time she was too slow.

The beast was on her faster than she could move, launching itself at her, the force of its heavyweight sending them both backwards and himari was pressed onto her back with nowhere to go.

Spirits, why wonโ€™t this thing just die already?!

Club still in hand, she waited for the beast to open its mouth wide ready to bite down at her, and once it did Himari shoved the club straight in between its jaws, effectively stopping it.

He didn't have to be told twice. The first moment he was up, the next, gone. Hands covering his head, Zhao felt the heat of the fireball arch across his spine, landing what sounded like a final blow. Peeking from under the cover of his arms, he let the dark spirit slope to the ground, eyes wide with morbid wonder.

It began to dissipate eerily, like smoke rising off a burning field. Starting from the hind legs, and then it was everywhere. Zhao felt a twinge, as if his body was finally taking the opportunity to let his disbelief trickle in. To acknowledge the absurdity; the absurdity of this fight, this day, this trip, of the very truth in the little fox girl's warning. No, it was no longer a simple warning. If nothing else, Zhao was sure of that.

But truth or no truth, the absurdity did not end there. Feet away lay Himari, trapped between the floor and a fearsome dark spirit. All that stood between her and the jaws of death, both in the physical and spiritual sense, was the club.

And so was the machete.

Now, this was no spoon. This was no throwing star, this was no small dagger. As prodigious as his progress was these past three years with metalbending under Master Toph, to move a weapon as large as this one, with such a need for accuracy, required at least one thing he could not afford at the moment: the preparation of a proper stance. But half a stance?

Still hunched over, Zhao focused his attention and managed to beckon the metal blade farther away to lift. Then, with near-perfect sharpness and alignment instilled in him by Master Toph as he could muster, his right arm and palm became the blade, swiftly cutting the air in a diagonal fashion. His left arm struck further down, to try and make up for the power his legs could not give.

In the space of a breath, the machete sang. And at the end of its song, hung Himari's dark spirit. Limp and dissipating, the blade lodged firmly into the opposing wall.

Zhao let out a pent-up breath. He looked over to Himari. One part with relief, yes, at the prospect of the Fire Nation heir being safe and not being a spirit's dinner. But more importantly, she was genuinely impressive. Her control with fire was near flawless, a testament to Zuko's own reformed legacy with firebending. She truly was her father's daughter.

"We...make...a great team," Zhao said breathlessly as he moved to her, offering a helping hand back up. He meant it. The thought of their surprising synergy during the fight had left its markโ€ฆ

His gaze wandered over to the side, drawn to none other than Lon Fa, who presided over her own impressive victory. The big smile he didn't realise he had on his face faltered, eyes zeroing in on the blood trickling down her arms.

"Lon Fa, your armsโ€”"

Zhao stopped mid-sentence, feeling the blood well up on his own back. Something about the cuts, though they were not fatal by any means, did not feel right. But there was no time, no will to dwell on it, there was still Kameko to worry about. He hoped Lon Fa, who already saw him as a hypocrite for a whole litany of other things, did not notice the pain in his own expression.

Hakoda bent the tendril over him and solidified it into a sharp spear ice ready to deal the final blow on the dark spirit. However he didnt need to as Nomura interjected, finishing the spirit off with one strike of his spear. Hakoda admittedly felt a bit of jealous annoyance at his kill being stolen after all the effort and wounding. Still it disappeared quickly, as his cooler head prevailed and the larger more important issue of them being attack took over. Namura being here meant the others were alert of the danger and ready. A relief to his worries"Thanks." He said if a little reluctantly before turning to look at the status of Broscha, hearing her deal with one of the spirits and returning to his side. He was admittedly impressed, though it shouldnt be a surprise he was at the fact she could defend herself.

He bended the ice spear back into water and sent to the broken window and froze it shut. However there was another dark spirit to consider but looking at Namora indicated that it was his to deal with alone. Hakoda would consider it foolishness but he knew namura was capable enough and there was Boscha and the others that might be in need for more help especially as he was hearing a closer commotion aside. "Dont be too proud to call for help if you need it." He said simply to Nomura, not showing any doubt but reminding him there was always help if the worst would happen, before feeling Boscha hand on his.

"Yeah lets." He said to Boscha before giving Nomura a conformative look before moving to leave, steeping out of the spare room and looked aorund for the source of fighting he had heard earlier. He could hear fighting nearby in the main hall but he was sure that there was something on closer. He stepped down the hallway carefully before he noticed something in the corner of her eyes. Light through a keyhole going suddenly dark. He wasnt sure he actually saw it but he descided to take the risk. "Hey is anyone is there? It safe for the moment. " He called out to the door. "I have Boscha with me, we need to help the others as well. We need all hands on deck for this."

โ€œLon Fa, your arms-โ€

Ah, yes. Her arms. The reminder of her cuts triggered her brain to remember the stinging pain, the drying blood on her toned arms. The throbbing of her unchecked nose that came and went. It turns out that adrenaline is only a good pain killer for so long. Zhao seemed to know the feeling, as the waterbenderโ€™s eyes immediately caught the pained look in her past lover's eyes. Despite the pain she felt, the teen was nowhere near tapped out, and she sure as hell wasnโ€™t going to start acting like it. Not when her cousins were still fighting on their own.

So, Lon Fa simply grinned, โ€œOh, this?โ€ Holding up her left arm, she let out a chuckle, spinning the spear she claimed in her right hand, โ€œIโ€™m fine, tough guy.โ€ She winked, hoping her lighthearted response would be enough for him to be reassured. โ€œItโ€™ll take more than an angry spirit dog to knock me down. You, on the other hand..โ€

As the girl spoke, she made her way behind the much, much taller earthbender, and winced. His blood had begun to bleed through the fabric of his shirt, and Lon Fa could only wonder how much worse the cuts looked underneath. โ€œLooks like youโ€™ll be getting some lovely scars to show off to your suitors when you get home..โ€ Backhanded? Possibly. It slipped out, her tongue moving faster than her mind. Her tone remained playful nonetheless, as Lon Fa eventually looked over to Himari.

Lon Fa never talked to the Princess very often. She seemed to be quite the goody-two-shoes, so to see the young woman use her fire bending inside of the Chieftessโ€™ cabin, was a bit of a shock to Lon Fa. It was for this reason that she eventually erupted into some more tired laughter, โ€œGotta hand it to you, that bending was kick ass.. Thanks for not ruining the family cabin.โ€

Kameko

Katara's Cabin

Charging into the kitchen, Kameko leveled her spear at the dark spirit she clocked with the pot, but it remained immobile. Probably not dead, but stunned.
"Spirits can be stunned, who knew?" She breathed before glancing around again.
Didn't seem to be any others here, so she might have time to get some supplies. A quick dash brought her to the spice rack. They were in breakable containers, so that was a saving. A strong throw would likely be enough to see them shatter. She grabbed the spices she personally knew stung like boar-q-pine's quill if they got in the eye, sticking some in what lose fold of clothing she had. There was something on the back of her mind that she was ignoring to focus on her current task that came in cold, sharp focus as she heard a growl behind her.
An unfinished job always comes back to haunt you.
Kameko whirled around trying to bring her spear up as the dark spirit leapt at her. She managed to bring the weapon up in a block, but didn't have the stance for the full weight of the monster's leap. Both went down, the teen on bottom with very angry spirit on top. The shaft of the spear was under the Bai Chi's chins, giving Kameko a reprieve from its snapping jaws. It was taking all her strength to keep it at bey, and the rest of its weight was keeping her pinned. Weren't spirits suppose to be ethereal? Maybe she could get on of the spice bottles, she could distract it..
A slight shift in her grip to try to go for the spices was enough to have the Bai chi to get close to biting off Kameko's nose, forcing her to turn her head as she redoubled her efforts to hold it up. Panic gripped her as she realized that unless something else happened, she was as good as dead.

Bold words, but then again so was she.

One part wild seawater and two parts grit, there was little doubt that Lon Fa would keep right on swinging that spear, bleeding arms be damned.

Zhao caught her wink, his face a net of momentary perplexity. In the heat of battle, it seemed the cold confusion he had felt from her when she last looked at him had melted away now. In its place, a veneer of light-heartedness, topped off by a very banal but lovable nickname.

A corner of his mouth lifted slightly, almost in wonder at how Lon Fa could make it sound like it was just the two of them in the room. As if all this was nothing more than just another one of their sparring sessions, where---energy, thirst and hunger permitting---either one was bound to end up tangled in the arms and lips of the other...

A blink. Lon Fa was behind him now. Turning his head halfway, he felt her eyes roaming, chin raised as she took her turn to examine the broad of his injured back. Her point, wrapped swiftly under the cover of playfulness, was hard to miss. It was the worst part of an old flame---they always knew your flaws too well.

"Fine additions for sure," he nodded, reflecting her flippant tone with one of his own. He turned to face her more, as if his slashed back was no longer of importance. "Zhao's girls and fans alike will certainly be thrilled to hear the story behind them."
The words felt like an act, but it was an act that lived and breathed through him. For a moment, the desire to tell her the truth was overwhelming. What had happened before she left had stayed that way; no matter who it was since then, first base had stayed first base, if it even went that far. But it had made no difference to Lon Fa then, so no matter his hopes, it made no difference now.

At the mention of Himari's bending abilities, Zhao felt the surge of admiration return. "A killer throwing arm too," he added, still a little breathless. "The White Wolverine really does owe you one, Princess."

Moments into finishing his sentence, a crash reverberated from the kitchen. Zhao's eyes widened as he rapidly turned around, the corrupting cuts on his back burning in protest.

"Kameko---"

A few steps forward and all his nonchalance about his injury came to bite him. He stumbled, visibly in pain.

Yลซka

Yลซka tried to think of something - anything, to both keep her mind off of the fierce fight that had just concluded with the mystifying beast, and also to calm her nerves down as well.

However, much to her frustration, one of the things she did not learn was curbing the adrenaline rush and emotional high that inevitably came after an intense battle. Instead, these episodes were usually followed by doing...certain activities that normally helped in quelling this feeling.

Not only was she confined to this small area, but she was also surrounded by people who, at least to her, would not be privy to the traditional arts that she beheld.

Still, what could she do? Her options were limited, and the last thing she wanted to do was step outside and unnecessarily expose herself to even more danger.

If only...

"...anyone is there?"

The voice barely reached her ears, the dull timbre barely registering her mind. Her eyes scanned the room, it was still empty. Was she losing her mind? What was happening to her? Why was she still here? Let's go out and have more fun.

they left...

"...safe for the moment."

The voice sounded familiar, but then again, it would be so easy to just snap her fingers and burn everything to the ground, right? And if she did do this then maybe they would finally just leave...

her alone...

"...Boscha with me...help the others...need all hands...for this."

Yลซka took a deep, shaky breath, finding it quite difficult to find a sense of balance within herself. She forced herself to slowly count to ten before she was finally able to recognize the person's voice from beyond the door.

It was Hakoda.

Yes, Hakoda, the elder and more sensible child of Katara.

Despite their recent interactions, or lack thereof, the two had a surprisingly cordial understanding with each other. While it did start as something of an obligatory courtesy act, it slowly grew into that of where they respected one another.

She dare say that out of the entire group, Hakoda would be one of the rare few that she would allow to have her back.

While the obvious thing to do here was open the door and go through the flow of the proceeding events, nothing was ever simple with her. The issue was that her nerves were still frayed, which would result in a not-so pleasant tone being set. This was something that she wanted to avoid with Katara's eldest. Looking around the room again, she found something that would serve as the temporary solution.

Yลซka winced as she placed a hand on her ribs, the scratch that was induced by the canine had dried by now. Letting out a sigh, she made sure to tie the sash around her delicate black robe before walking over to the window and opening it. Feeling the cold breeze sweep through the room, the chill was enough to give her an excuse to act a bit stiff and hostile.

["It's open..."] Yลซka began to say in the Fire Nation tongue before shaking her head. Gracefully sitting down on one of the cushions, she then calmly called out, "Enter."

Once the door was open, Boscha wasted no time.
She slipped inside, but not before glancing back at Hakoda. One look and it was clear; he needed to go back to his cousin's side. The scroll pressed against her chest, Boscha gave him a rapid nod. Her eyes assured, but her long ears were low and turning inward, betraying her anxiousness for his safety.

"Go, go, we'll be alright!"

The door closed shut. A moment later, the chain was figured out and put swiftly into its latch. Boscha turned around. Behind her, sat one of the Fire Nation princesses, as graceful and poised as a swan. The giant earthbender's voice echoed once more as the fox girl remembered her name.

Yลซka.

The daughter of Azula. Such a connection, such a legacy could strike fear in some, and awe in others. Boscha was in neither category. Coming from a world of archives and scrolls, she could only look and see the girl before her as a mysterious book, whose secrets yearned to be treasured.

Before a word could come out, a shiver took hold of Boscha. It was here that she realized that the room's warmth was invaded by the frostbitten airs of the outside. Glancing back at the princess, it seemed she, too suffered. Coldness radiated from her in a way that only those infinitely more familiar with the nuances of human body language could catch on. The oblivious fox girl quickly rushed over to the window, eyes drawn to the last fumes of an almost nonexistent Bai Chi on the ground. Boscha arched her neck out further, head swiveling side from side for the stoic, feminine shape of Lon Fa and Hakoda's mother. To no avail. Silence greeted her and her night vision produced no more opponents hidden in the darkness, which was a small comfort. Taking one last look at the Bai Chi before grabbing hold of both shutters, the warmth was invited back in and preserved.

"That's better," murmured Boscha, latching them shut with a sigh. Without the background noise of wind and thick, logged walls muffling the rest of the action in the cabin, a silence settled in the room. Careful of her slightly fractured wrist and the scroll, the fox girl turned and found herself yet again at a loss for words. So instead, a very rapid, clumsy yet well-meaning curtsy (?) substituted for a greeting. A sheet was peeled off the Chieftess' bed, joining the exiled spirit and her haste towards Yลซka.

Settling herself upon a neighboring cushion and the blanket around them, Boscha could not help but wonder. Upon defeating that dark spirit, how long had the princess been in here? Just as she finished the thought, something caught her attention. Or more accurately, her nose---

"Are you alright? How long have you been in here? Have you seen your sister? Is that blood? Oh no, are you bleeding as well?"

With each alert inquiry, whatever notion Boscha had regarding human royal decorum and personal space quickly eroded. The fox girl's nose twitched in tandem with her head movements, fluttering very, very closely around Yลซka to pinpoint the source injury. Her own dried, corrupting sliver of a gash on her leg becoming more and more visible.

Lon Fa

location

Katara's Cabin.

interactions

Interaction: Zhao, Himari, Kameko

The thunderous crash that broke through alerted Zhao enough to get him moving, prompting Lon Fa to hold her free hand out, resting on his shoulder. โ€œDonโ€™t be stupid. Iโ€™ve got this.โ€ Her words were brash, but they came from a place of love. The last thing Zhao needed to do was join a fight and hurt himself even more. Concern for her ex was evident in her blue eyes as their gaze shifted to Himari, โ€œGet him somewhere safe. You both need to patch up, before they find you again.โ€

Lon Fa did not give the pair any time to retaliate, quickly turning around and approaching the kitchen. She spun the bloodied spear in her hand as the beastโ€™s growls grew louder and louder. The waterbender cursed to herself mentally, hating the open-concept of this cabin for its lack of hiding spaces. Stunning these beasts is a great way to get a one-up on them.

The archway that led into the kitchen and dining area was quite vast, making the visual of her younger cousin pinned to the ground clear as day. A shadowy, growling figure nearly cloaked the nonbender, making the spear she had obtained hidden. To Lon Fa, Kameko was defenseless and at the mercy of a dark spirit. Strategy flew out the window.

โ€œGet off of her!โ€ Lon Fa screamed out again, raising her spear and charging at it. Despite the loudness in her voice, the beast had its eyes planted on her younger cousin, who was so close to meeting her end. Scratched-up arms rose once more and fell, lodging the spear into the beastโ€™s back with both hands.

The noise that came after was unnerving. A strange mix of a howl, groan, and whimper that almost tried to echo the sounds of a dog boomed throughout the kitchen. Hearing these noises, Lon Fa yanked the spear out of the dogโ€™s back with a grunt, and carelessly kicked it off of a panting Kameko.

Blue eyes were wide as they inspected the younger girlโ€™s features, โ€œKameko! Thank god!โ€ Lon Fa dropped her (now black) spear, crouching down to check on Kameko. Tears welled up in her eyes, a mix of relief and the momentary grief that passed through her. โ€œAre you okay? Are you hurt?โ€ She breathlessly laughed, โ€œOh, you idiot! You scared me-โ€

The sound of claws scratching the wooden floors interrupted her, willing the waterbender to remember that there was still a fight to be had.

These spirits really donโ€™t know when to quit, do they?

Lon Fa picked herself back up, swiping up her spear and readying herself into a proper fighting stance. It didnโ€™t take long for the dark spirit to charge at her and her cousin, as expected.

Without a second thought, Lon Fa began to bend at the knees, nearly bouncing before launching herself into the air again. This time, spinning her body and extending her leg so that the top of her foot hit the dog square in the face.

The mere force of surprise alone made the spirit stumble, and the strength of her kick made it fall onto the ground once more, leaving Lon Fa open for another kill for the night. The young fighter, still holding onto her spear, drove it into the writhing spiritโ€™s neck, using the gravity of her fall to strengthen the blow.

Her lungs were burning now, arms searing from the split skin and sheer strength she had to use to withstand the fight. However, despite her heaving, she did not release her hold of the dark spirit until it stopped moving. Even then, she simply left the spear inside the dogโ€™s neck, and rolled herself off of the foul beast.

The pain began to come back even more now. Her nose was throbbing, still sprained from earlier that same night. Arms coated in mostly dried blood, hands having dots of the black goo that came from the spirits. Despite the pain, she kept herself propped up, yet still sitting on the floor.

Now, it was Lon Faโ€™s turn to look up at Kameko, who was approaching her. โ€œMind helping me up?โ€ A moment of humility. A rarity when it came to Lon Fa, but it was much needed. At the rate that her adrenaline was declining, she felt like she would barely be able to hold herself up.

Kameko

Child of Sokka & Suki

location

Katara's Cabin

Kameko's mind was racing as her weary arms strained to keep the beast at bay. She was trying to move her legs so maybe she could push kick the dark spirit off of her, but there wasn't really room between their bodies to get her feet planted properly. When it felt like her arms couldn't hold out anymore, she heard the sweet sound of Lon Fa's voice.
"Get off of her!"
The force of Lon Fa's blow caused Kameko's arms to buckle, but the dark spirit was no longer concerned with her as its head reared back. It seemed to be limp as it was kicked off Kameko. The younger non-bender panted as relief, shame, and the after affects of terror washed through her system. She lay there wide eyed as Lon Fa checked on her.
"Great. Had to have your cousin save your butt. Am I actually going to be useful on this mission, or a liability?" Kameko thought.
Trying to ignore the doubts welling up insider her, she tried to answer Lon Fa's questions. Despite the desperate situation she was in, she had come out relatively unscathed.
"I'm fine, just-" the teen began, but the dark spirit wasn't done.
With grace and determination Kameko wished she had, Lon Fa finished off the dark spirit. The self disappointment grew a little as she pushed herself up. Those thoughts were at least partly silenced when Lon Fa asked for help. Kameko took stock of her cousin's condition then rushed to her side.
"I gotcha." She said, grabbing one of Lon Fa's arms and putting it around the back of her neck to help carry her weight. "Your mom will be able to heal you up just fine when she gets back."
