Finished [Isekai Hell] The Manhunt

saxon

One Thousand Club
Hello, everyone, this RP is set in the world of Isekai Hell; you can find information about the world here.

This Rp follows several characters as they are on a manhunt. A man in the village was seen entering and leaving and old ladies residence, though he seems to have skipped town. With the trail being lost in the Great Forest. The guild has been hired to look into the matter.

Setting:
Locations: Heinmark, Ryke
Time of Day: 2100
Weather: The moon is covered with clouds as rain is pouring down on the village and due to the clouds there is very little moonlight tonight.

Notes: Please link your character Sheet in your first post and any point boosters. 3-4 Day rounds can always put a new round up earlier if everyone posts sooner than expected.

Azusa looked up at the sky as she pulled her rain jacket tighter to avoid getting wet from the downpour. Letting out a sigh she walked into the tavern where the guild request had told them to meet the mayor of the town. Though she hadn't expected it to be in such a remote area nor did she expect the town's size to be this large. The town of Heinmark was nestled at the edge of the Great Forest, often considered a frontier in Ryke due to the vastness of the forest, and with how little of it was actually explored it only added to the effect. The two in question were known for their lumber production and the large church that sat atop a nearby mountain that was deemed a pilgrimage site to those in the area.

The only lights that lit up the town were the torches that were coming out of the windows of buildings. Rain in this part of the year wasn't uncommon but, the downpour was strange, though it only added to the mood as the forest sat only 50 yards from the town's edge. Guards were regularly patrolling the town to ensure nothing was sneaking in. Currently, most of the shops were closed and posters were put up every so often detailing the individual the guild had been requested to find.

Walking into the tavern, Azusa pulled her hood down, scanning the room as many of the patrons didn't notice her walk in. To which she let out a small sigh walking up to the barkeep. "Im looking for the mayor, I was told by the guild to meet him here," Azusa stated as she took a seat at the bar. The barkeep was an Elf with long blonde hair and green eyes who turned around revealing he was drying a mug with a rag. He leaned forward on the counter as he seemed to be sizing her up.

"Well the mayor hasn't arrived yet but I was told to send any of the adventurer guild members to the room over there," The barkeep stated as he pointed toward a door that was opened that seemed to be a private room. From where she stood there was a table and several chairs in the room along with a few windows she could see from where she stood. The tavern was loud and warm thanks to several fire places that were set up around the room. She simply nodded her head before walking toward the room.

Upon entering the room there was a long table, with several chairs as she had seen before, however, on this table was a map and some food had been placed out and there was a keg at the back wall. No doubt the mayor was trying to be hospitable though she did find it weird that the mayor wasn't around yet. I do wonder what is going to happen here, though the information we were given wasn't all that great to start with. Hopefully, the town has gotten more information figured out. She thought to herself before sitting down on one of the chairs and waiting for the others.

Benji, hood up and ears protesting the futility of his coat against the rain, trudged into the tavern in the remote town of Heinmark. Surveying the dimly lit town with its guards on patrol and rain pouring down, he found solace in the tavern's relative quietness.

Approaching the barkeep, a tall Elf with green eyes, Benji cut to the chase. "Good evening. I'm here for the mayor's request," he stated bluntly, taking a seat and trying to blend into the background, which wasn't hard considering how unnoticed he seemed to be.

Directed to a private room, Benji found a map, food spread out, and a conspicuous absence of the mayor. His eyebrows rose in mild suspicion at the absence of the town's head honcho. Spotting another figure in the room, a young woman likely there for the same gig, Benji offered a half-wave and an introduction. "Evening, miss. Name's Benji." With the lure of free food too good to resist, he settled in, depositing his broadsword beside him. "You're here for the mayor too?" he asked, already reaching for some of the offered snacks. Free food was a language he spoke fluently.

No, this couldn’t be right. He must’ve gotten turned around somewhere. Todd stared at the town that had appeared out of the rain before him, and scratched the top of his head. Then he glanced back at the forest behind him. Was this even the same forest he’d entered? Honestly, this was why people should avoid doing anything that involved dealing with Fae. The Kushtaka had no idea where he was! He was pretty sure it wasn’t just due to a poor sense of direction on his part, too!

He was pretty sure it hadn’t been raining when he’d entered the forest, but it was really coming down now. His fur was somewhat water repellent, but his clothing was not, not to mention his powder supply. Of course, black powder was something he could make more of, but why make extra work for himself if he could avoid it? So, he hustled towards the town, kicking up water with every errant footfall. First thing first, he had to find a tavern, get some warm food in him, and figure out just where it was he’d ended up!

Upon arriving at the town proper, Todd found the best word he could use to describe the atmosphere of the place was ‘oppressive,’ and that wasn’t just because of the buckets of rain. The guards were out in force, with tension thick enough to be cut with a knife. And upon stopping under an awning to catch is breath and shake some of the excess water out of his fur, is eyes settled upon the source of it all. There on the wall was a wanted poster for a murderer on the run. What a fine mess that was! What a sad thing for the poor murdered woman’s family. He probably shouldn’t get involved, he was new to the area and wanted to get back to Nan Gau as quickly as possible…

But he had skills that could be of use in the situation. And if he could be of help, he’d never forgive himself for walking away. At the very least, the Kushtaka could at least offer his services, and if they didn’t need his assistance, so be it. He found the tavern without extreme difficulty – with the streets mostly dark aside from the torchlight cast from windows, it was simply a matter of finding one of the more lit up buildings – and, after shaking the water from his fur and wringing out his clothes as best he could, Todd let himself in.

The mood inside the tavern was, suffice to say, very different from the one outside. Warm and inviting, the Kushtaka immediately found his spirits rising with the promise of good food and good company. Still, he wasn’t here to have a good time, and after scanning the room once or twice he noticed a private area off to the side where a few adventure-y looking types seemed to be gathering. That seemed as good a place as any! So, he stepped over to the doorway, and gave it a knock to announce his presence.

“Howdy!” he said, with his most pleasant grin, “got room for one more?”

Valen scowled from under hood his hood as he swiftly made his way into cover, just right outside the tavern. He gave a huff and wiped at his face, sending a spray of water to the ground. He dug his hand into a backpocket and pulled out a rumpled, folded piece of paper. Unfuring it carefully as not to soak it, he read it over quickly. He looked up form the peice of paper and then at the tavern door, slightly leaning out of cover to see the sign that said the name of the tavern. "Right spot it seems." He grinned and ran a hand through his hair before looking down at his muddy boots. He kicked them against the doorframe of the tavern before making his way in.

He shivered at the warm air, and the sound of people talking and resting was a welcome sound. He slinked his way though, and made his way to the counter. He lowered his hood and just gave a friendly smile to the barkeep, and was soon directed to the room as well. Already a few have gathered, looks like he was late. Yet he just grinned and said right after "How about two more hmm? The more the merrier." He made his way into the room, and said "Though that also means less the cut of pay sometimes...hmmm." He hummed as he beelined for the keg and helped himself to the contents..grabbing a tankard and pouring it for himself.

"So which one of you is the Mayor?"

The door swung open. A dark-clothed man stepped forward and moved on, leaving it to close behind him. Plop, plop, plo-plop! A wet and freezing crested gecko just barely made it through. The shift in body temperature would've killed him in his old life. Yet as of right now, he only felt inconvenienced. It wasn't the only thing that differed from his previous life. His senses beyond a baseline dark vision were stripped. His claws no longer could grip to bark for as long as they once could. He felt like the things he should have been able to see were reduced, his sense of smell whittled to little more than a human's. The only thing that had changed him the most was his sapience, nowadays fueled by a dopamine intake not being met by gecko activities. He had been traveling on and off aimlessly trying to sate his lust for adventure, but the rain went on for any longer, and with his latest ride already having moved on to another town, he might just have to stay until morning.

Already having had his fill of flies and grubs from outside, he was planning to crawl his way up to the rafters for a spot to rest. But that was before he took a good look at the man ahead of him, beyond the boots laced with mud and gunk. His body language radiated with that energy Quiel was yearning for. Although the man spoke in the same gibberish most others did, if he was doing what he thought he was doing the gecko was going to follow along the best he could. Clueless to the situation, Quiel scuttled up the door frame of the room that housed a very long table, where the man with the hood moved on to the keg and was about to tank a hefty chug of whatever was in there. A human, an elf, and two beastmen were present as well, seeming perfectly suited to handle just about anything! All too eagerly, he leaped from the side of the door frame and belly-flopped onto the back of a vacant chair, readjusting his grip as the sting subsided.

Azusa looked up as she heard footsteps approach the room, seeing Benji enter the room and the fact the man was shirtless. She can to the assumption that this man wasn't the mayor or at least she hoped that wasn't the case. Before she could actually speak several others walked into the room, though they all seemed to be adventurers as they all asked if someone in the room before them was the mayor. She was just about to speak when an old man with a cane walked into the room. The old man shut the door behind him and took a seat without speaking a word.

Dispite the looks of the man with his cane, he didn't seem to move like he needed it. The man had short grey hair, though his eyes seemed closed, though once again his movements gave away that there was something more to it. "Please, everyone take a seat, I'm the mayor of this village, Karl Vans," Karl introduced herself as he motioned to the other chairs for the others to sit down and start to eat the food.

"There was a murder in the village a few days ago, and we put in a request to hunt him down. The man in question is Stanley Grenblum, he was seen entering and leaving the house of an old lady. When some of the neighbors hadn't heard or seen from the old lady they found her with a knife in her chest...To think such a thing could happen in the village is absurd. So, your job is simple find him and bring him back dead or alive," As karl said dead or alive his sky blue eyes were visible for the first time.

There was a sense of tension in the room that was thicker than the rest of the village so much that you would need something extremely sharp to cut through it. That was when the tapping sound started to happen as he was simply tapping the cane against the ground. "The guards saw him running into the forest and we have tracked him down to a river region of the forest but we don't have the skills needed nor do we have the time to send people in that far," Karl explained.

Before Benji could wrangle a response from Azusa, a parade of newcomers flooded the room, all waiting to meet the elusive mayor. Only one, a timid girl named Mallory, introduced herself. Benji, never one to judge a book by its cover, offered her a casual wave, suspecting a hidden fierceness behind her shy demeanor. As for the rest, names seemed like an issue for another time. "I'll get those names later," he thought to himself, continuing his pursuit of a hefty leg of meat. Some newcomers appeared quite eccentric, but Benji figured they probably viewed him the same way.

While the others fired off questions, Benji decided to prioritize stuffing his face – an essential task, he reasoned, leaving the finer details to more talkative types.

Mid-chew, an old man with a cane strolled in, shutting the door behind him before taking a seat without uttering a word. Despite the old man's facade, his movements hinted at something more beneath the surface.

"Please, everyone take a seat," announced Karl Vans, the supposedly elderly mayor who moved far sprightlier than expected, motioning for them to partake in the food spread.

"A murder, eh?" Benji mused inwardly, washing down his last bite. Time for business. The mission seemed straightforward, but he knew better than to let his guard down, especially for grandmother killers. While Benji hadn't taken a life, dealing with a murderer might make it easier. Assured by the legitimacy of the task – a mayor's word and all that jazz – and with a belly full of resolve, he readied himself once the others finished their inquiries. No need to be pushy; that'd just be rude, he figured.

He wasn’t the last through the door, and, when the Mayor entered and requested they all find seats, the Kushtaka was quick to comply. He mentally reminded himself to act like he was meant to be here, not draw attention to himself by acting nervous or like he didn’t belong. By the sound of it, they’d already identified their killer, so this was going to be more manhunt and less investigation. Still, Todd figured his skills were still broadly applicable, especially if they were going to have to go swimming to chase after him!

“Hopin’ none of you mind to me objectin’ to the ‘dead’ part,” Todd said, glancing up and down the table at the others. “Killer or not, man deserves his day in front of the judge same as any other.”

(Just wanted to say that the individual I was referring to last post was Valen. Quiel doesn't have a companion yet.)

Still gripping on the back of an empty chair, Quiel turned to see an old man walking into the room. Though Quiel hadn't noticed how his cane didn't quite sync with his walk, the gecko judged that he must have been the leader of the group given his attire and the sudden silence in the room.

Nearly all of his words apart from "Vans" went over Quiel's head. The elf's sincere voice also added some context, but for the most part, Quiel was still going into this completely blind. Despite the language barrier, the air and the conviction in the old man's eyes were a dead giveaway to the gravity of the situation. Hopefully, he hadn't just barged into some funeral reception.

A bit of noise was buzzing around the room after the man spoke. Nearly everyone had pitched in the conversation as the cane tapped on the ground. It only added to the charged atmosphere, but the voices of the others converted some of Quiel's tension into anticipation.
