What's this about?

It's very closely based on a story I'm currently developing and preparing to write and hopefully one day publish as a novel! I've tried getting this RP off the ground several times, and one of them way back in the day (like 2014 ish) actually went pretty far before fizzling out due to life getting in the way of literally everyone, including me. I've got another version going with some friends here as well, but it's slowed to a crawl and currently waiting to see if it will be able to proceed or if it's best to call it "dead" and move on.

But I digress!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(thanks to Chordling for reminding me this was needed cause my sleepy brain forgot)

The Story

The RP story focuses on an impending cataclysmic event foretold since ancient times across numerous races and cultures known as The Awakening, and in typical "world saving" fashion our characters will all be tied together in a quest to protect the world we all call "home."

What does The Awakening warn about?

Before "time" existed, and before the Mortal Plane had been crafted by the Gods, a Dark Entity of unknown origin descended upon the Higher Plane (the realm of the Gods). This entity took to war with the Gods and was eventually defeated and banished to the Void Between Realms where it has remained in a state of slumber ever since. But now, with the evils in the Mortal Plane becoming more prevalent and wide spread, this entity has long feasted on the darkness of the mortal heart and mind. As its strength increases, its escape from the Void Between Realms is all but inevitable.

The Awakening warns that when the Red Sun sets in the East, the Darkness will rise... And the Mortal World will end as this Entity breaches the Void and sucks all mortal life dry before renewing its war with the Gods.

So what brings our characters together?

Blood.

Specifically, ancient bloodlines dating back to the first mortals ever to side with the Gods in numerous skirmishes with the dark forces which sought to free the Dark Entity from the Void. These heroes were blessed by the Gods, and their bloodlines given a fragment of Divine Energy marking them as the Gods' Chosen. Today, their descendants are the only ones who can hear the Call of the Gods that warns of the impending release of this Dark Entity. The Call will also serve as a desperate plea from the Gods to our characters to release one of their own who slumbers in the Mortal Plane; The Dragon Goddess, Sil'Eph Niir.

Perhaps together with Sil'Eph Niir and her children, the Dragon Race, the world of mortals may yet survive this coming calamity. But only if they can wake her in time. A tall task for any mortal.

Why?

The Dragon Race were hunted by Mortals in ages past and have since taken to isolating themselves on a massive island near the center of the world now known as Dragon's Cove. To make matters worse, they've surrounded the island with powerful and ancient magic that more modern forms of humanoid magic can never touch. If we can't reach the Cove, we can't awkaen the Goddess.

And if we can't awaken Sil'Eph Niir, all hope will be forever lost... And the Mortal Plane will end when the Entity awakens.

As the Call of the Gods grows ever stronger, the time of Awakening draws nearer.

It falls to us now...

We must find a way to break the magic surrounding Dragon's Cove and beseech the mighty Dragon Race to awaken their slumbering mother and Goddess to protect this world for the sake of all mortal beings.

Fair Warning: This RP is meant for those who have the confidence and drive to push themselves to go above and beyond the average CS design, as well as be able to push themselves above and beyond when it comes to posting and satisfying all of the most important elements of storytelling along the way. For example if you would normally explain a half-breed character's background starting with "they had a human father an Elven mother who fell in love at first sight leading to childbirth within two years," that's not going to be nearly enough to survive this RP's rather brutal CS requirements. So, if you're averse to the ides of pushing yourself to create a CS that feels like it's actually for a real living being rather than just filling out the CS for the sake of getting to the RP faster, then this isn't the RP for you and it'd be wise to give it a hard pass.

So!!

The RP's highlights include, but are not limited to, the following:

1) A High-Fantasy Setting - This includes all your favorite races from games, films, tv, and novels like elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, imps, nymphs, faeries, half-animal people (called Miithi in this RP lore), and many, many more original races I've come up with as well. More information and detail will be provided if the RP gets enough interest to warrant starting it.

2) Mythological Creatures galore - If you can think of it, it's probably in this world. Dragons, Griffons, Cyclops, Chimeras, etc.

3) Magic System - There's a lot to say about this, but just know that an individual can only ever use 1 form of magic in their lifetime for various reasons. So, if you're more of a multi-dimensional magic user kind of player, this isn't the RP for you. All characters with magical capabilities will only ever be capable of using a single form of magic in their life. As with the setting and races, more info will be provided if the RP idea gets enough traction to warrant starting it.

4) Deep Character Requirements - The character sheet will be much deeper and more extensive than most you've encountered previously. So be prepared to bring your best, and give a little extra.

The best way to lead is to lead by example. So, I'm going to provide the character sheet below in the form of my own character's actual sheet so you can see who I'll be playing and what kind of depth and detail I expect from you! Preferably, you'll surpass the level of detail I've provided below. If you don't feel that you can at least match what I've presented, please give this RP a pass.

Personality: The personification of "Benevolence," Elena hasn't a single negative or aggressive bone in her body. Nor has she since birth. As a High Elf with a powerful connection to the planet, nature, and the flow of Mana in the world around her, she holds each to be sacred not just at a cultural level, but a spiritual one as well. At birth, as with all High Elves, she was exposed to a high concentration of mana to test her Magical Affinity which was revealed to be Healing Magic which perfectly suited her personality. Given her powerful connection to nature it's no surprise she easily befriends the creatures of the forest, and she holds them all very near and dear to her heart going so far as to name every single one of them and talking to them as if they were her own people and capable of speaking back. Many a times she wished she were a Nymph who had the ability to actually communicate with them as she believes they'd be far better company than the politically minded and motivated people she's usually forced into contact with.

Pre-Birth: Elena's father, Drathmiito Klefinger, is a former member of the High Elven Royal Guard stationed in the High Elven capital city of Erithia. Serving for over 10 years with nothing of significant interest taking place he began to use any and all of his spare time to wander from the palace and into the city proper where he enjoyed casually strolling around and simply watching his people going about their lives. One late Fall day he happened to pass by a newly opened flower shop and spied what he believed to be a young man working in the back, so he stopped in to inquire about the ownership of the establishment and ask whether or not Royal Guards were forbidden from entering as they were in most other establishments. When the "young man" turned around, it was not a young man at all. It was a beautiful young woman with short-cut hair, and she hadn't taken kindly at all to his "young man" call out. Having been raised with manners, he bowed fully in apology and was forgiven for the mistake. Announcing her name to be Rufia Sehlmer, the two enjoyed a rather cordial conversation thereafter before the owner finally appeared to discuss business with Drathmiito.

Weeks passed, and Drathmiito found himself seldom able to take his conversation with Rufia off his mind. When asking a friend and fellow Royal Guard about it, he was waved off and told he should have arrested her for speaking with such hostility after a simple slip of the tongue in calling her "young man." Asking a different friend and colleague the next day he was informed that the chances were high that he fancied this young lady if she was truly on his mind so frequently. The only way to know for sure would be to go back and speak to her. But Royal Guards were forbidden from entering the building, like so many other places. Even so, he took his chance and stood outside the establishment until Rufia left for the day. Upon seeing him again she gave him a cordial bow of the head and intended to walk past, but he called to her and requested a moment of her time. Reluctantly, she agreed to speak. And after some word stumbling Drathmiito relayed that he'd had a hard time not thinking of her and asked if she would do him the honor of spending more time together. However, Rufia refused the request and informed him that she did not have any such eyes for him, nor did she ever expect to. With that, she went home and requested that Drathmiito not return to bother her again.

Years passed, and Drathmiito committed himself to work above romance or any such thoughts thereto. It wasn't long before an invasion of Erithia by a neighboring faction of Dark Elves ensued, drawing the Royal Guards into the conflict when they breached the city limits and began attacking the people. Drathmiito, along with his comrades, rushed to the city's defense fighting valiantly and viciously to protect their people. Drathmiito reached the main square where the enemies had gathered in the greatest numbers and fought like a demon striking them down one by one and managed to keep a number of innocent bystanders who hadn't managed to escape the area safe during the attack. Eventually he was overwhelmed and left for dead with several deep lacerations on his back. A combination of shock and blood loss caused him to black out, and when he awoke he heard the distinct comfort of silence. But he also felt something else that was comforting. A hand on his forehead. It was small and delicate. It must have been female. And sure enough, it was. When his eyes opened three days following the assault, he was on his stomach with his head turned sideways and he could feel the bandages wrapping his body. But that hand. He looked up and his eyes fell upon the most beautiful gleaming golden eyes he'd ever seen in his life. With long flowing hair tied back in a ponytail, those signature High Elf ears pointed slightly downwards, and an aura of benevolence he'd never encountered before, he was left speechless.

The young High Elf maiden's name was Ophamia Thurlee, and she worked as a member of the local clinic and was his nurse for most of his recovery. Not wishing to undergo the same pain as he had with Rufia he attempted to emotionally distance himself from the sudden upsurge of feelings he was experiencing. But with her kindness, gentleness, and her fondness for conversation with him he found it increasingly difficult to do so. Upon recovering and returning to duty, several weeks passed before he received a letter by carrier pigeon. It was from Ophamia. In the letter she thanked him for his bravery and service, as well as the "lovely" conversations she claimed to have enjoyed and that she would remember fondly for the rest of her life. It sounded final, as if she never expected to see him again. But those words "I will remember our chats fondly for the rest of my life," struck a nerve in Drathmiito which, against his desire to remain emotionally distanced, cracked his foundation and he found himself wandering to the clinic when his shift for the day was over. And when Ophamia emerged from the facility both of them froze momentarily before smiling and engaging in another lively conversation.

With the years passing, and the relationship between Drathmiito and Ophamia developing slowly but surely, the bumps in the road to their union after a near ten year courtship were quite strong. The biggest obstacle along the way and at nearly every turn was Ophamia's parents who held an innate distrust of the Royal Guards as they believed them to be lazy, irresponsible, and disconnected from the problems facing the commonwealth. Even with Ophamia's insistence that Drathmiito was an exception and that he'd fought valiantly to protect not only her life, but the lives of many others, and with Drathmiito showing the scars on his back from the encounter which Ophamia confirmed she'd been personally responsible for tending, it wasn't enough for Ophamia's parents. More than once it seemed that their union would be forever cut short by Ophamia's parents. But her conviction outweighed her fear in a display which caught Drathmiito off guard, to say nothing of her parents. Ophamia cut ties with her parents by renouncing her kinship with them formally through a letter signed by the local courts confirming her abandonment of the Thurlee name leaving her with only her given name of Ophamia as her identifier. Now free to pursue her heart, she and Drathmiito were married almost immediately. And within the next year their love bore their first child, a boy named Vahniir. A second child, a daughter named Mauya, was born two years later. And finally, three years after Mauya's birth, Elena was given life and brought into a happy, healthy household.

Biography: Elena was born in the year 860 to Drathmiito and Ophamia Klefinger. Tested almost immediately after birth for any Magical Affinity it was discovered that she did in fact have Magical potential, and her affinity was Healing. Given Ophamia's profession and Drathmiito's fascination with the subject, it seemed the Gods had smiled upon them in every way possible. However, nothing is ever so simple or straightforward whether the Gods intervene or not as the family would soon find out. And find out... They did... In arguably the most horrific and heartbreaking ways possible.

Elena was blessed with tremendous beauty from birth. Flowing auburn brown hair, light chocolate brown eyes, bow-shaped lips, gracefully arched eyebrows, a slender figure and an angelic facial structure with a subtle heart shape to it, she was the envy of the world for young Elven girls at the time she began attending her first educational system. But it was this beauty combined with her natural intellect which made her a target for one of the most nefarious types of people in existence, regardless of race...

When Elena came home after her first day at school, Ophamia noticed instantly from a distance before Elena set foot anywhere near the front door that something was wrong. Elena was walking with a limp and bore a thousand yard stare as she ambled up to the house. Ophamia took her inside and examined her, and the tiny smears of blood between Elena's legs were everything Ophamia needed to go to the authorities and have her teacher arrested on sight for this beyond wicked assault.

Understandably, Elena was never the same following this tragic event. With her innocence tarnished and her virtue forever stolen by a predator, she withdrew from public attention and sought home schooling for the remainder of her basic educational experience. Her mother worked tirelessly with her over the next decade and a half to help mend the scars to a point where Elena felt comfortable going outside again, and was largely successful. By age 20 Elena opted to leave home and study the art of Healing Magic at one of the most prestigious schools for the Healing Arts in the world. However, her application was denied. She attempted her second choice, and was again denied. But as they say the third time's the charm. Applying for her third choice she was finally accepted into the Sothalin Academy Of Healing where her studies in the Healing Arts began in earnest. During her time at the Academy she made many friends in her classes and even some who would become lifelong friends in the staff and teacher's ranks. Among them would be the man who would become her first husband, a human named Norman Rockwell.

Norman and Elena's relationship after marriage, however, did not last. After failing to pass the Master's Exam Norman fell into depression and became prone to alcoholic spouts of abuse, both physical and emotional. Their marriage was officially dissolved via a rather messy divorce which required Elena to file for a restraining order against her now ex-husband who refused to accept the divorce as legally binding and still considered Elena to be his wife. He was eventually arrested and placed in prison for life after attempting to murder a local security guard helping enforce the restraining order. The next year Elena passed her Master's Exam for Magic under the observation of the Global Magician's Council member, Councilman Hrathu Miil'engard. Now officially a Master Healing Mage, Elena was granted all rights and authority thereto, as well as her Master's Robes and insignia which she bore with pride on her upper left chest region.

Life as a Master Healing Mage came with a price, however, as Elena soon found out. She would regularly be contacted for her Healing abilities by multiple nations and peoples across the racial divides for requests to hire her services permanently which she had done her best to make clear was not going to happen. She would swear no allegiance to any single nation or people. She was a nomadic healer who would travel the world searching for those most in dire need of her assistance and provide the aid they sought to the best of her abilities. And for almost 300 years this worked out well for her until one fateful encounter with forbidden magic changed everything.

By this time in her life Elena had once again married, this time to a charming Miithi of the Eagle tribes named Taron. Their love bore two children, a son named Jerras and a daughter named Aalia. The couple would raise their children together for approximately 14 years before Elena's dreaded encounter. The mage she ran into was one of the Memory Magic cults who promptly erased Elena's memories as far back as he could before disappearing. By the time Elena recovered from the attack itself she remembered only her name. She didn't remember that she was a High Elf and has since referred to herself simply as an "Elf." She didn't remember her parents. She didn't remember first husband. She didn't remember her magical training or any of the skills she'd mastered. And she didn't remember her family. The faces of her loving husband and two children were complete strangers to her. Despite taking her to every Healer they could find no magical touch would undo the damage that was done. Only another Memory mage would be able to reverse it.

Out of grief and an inability to cope with the loss of her mother's memories and love, Aalia tragically committed suicide shortly before what would have been her 15th birthday. The loss of his sister and the stress of Elena's lost memories eventually drove their son to run away from home and turn to a life of crime. And even Taron himself eventually quietly filed for divorce and left Elena in the care of a local Healer in the hopes that somehow, some way, they'd find a way to return her to her former self. And he let them know that if they were successful he would be waiting for her at their old home which was now a foreign place to her.

The years passed... So many in fact that Taron and Jerras had both passed away from old age. And Elena never knew. Nor was she ever informed.

Eventually, preferring the company of animals to people, she settled into a small hut in the woods just outside of Erithia and lives a quiet life of solitude while she waits for something. She doesn't know what that something is. But she knows that it will someday find her. And when it does she has promised herself that she will be ready.

Aaaaaaand there we go!

Thank you lunch break!

So, that's about the kind of detail I would expect from anyone looking to join this RP. If you can match or surpass it, whether it's in the quality of the details or the quantity, then I'll be happy to welcome you aboard!

If not, kindly pass on the RP.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this gets any traction whatsoever, I'll be happy to start creating OOC pages with all the relevant information we'll need to get started!

Cheers!

I'm really curious to know more about what the characters would be doing in this roleplay. :)

Boop!

Updated with a bit of story information that would've been nice if I'd managed to overcome my sleepiness to include earlier. Lol!

Thanks Chordling Chordling !

I'm rather interested in this idea. I just don't know if I'm going to have enough time for it yet. But I can start piecing a CS together and see how things go if other people want to join.

Shveet!

You're more than welcome to take your time on a CS. I work a full time job so I know the time constraints of life pretty well (even though I do my best to find workarounds for them which I probably otherwise shouldn't, I'm such a bad influence). Lol.

I'd like to make my interest known here! An epic fantasy is something I've been craving for some time now, and the title reminds me of Divinity Original Sin, so there's also that!

Being that there are so many races we may play with, it'll take me a little time to come up with some character concepts. I have been yearning to play a gnoll (or something similar), which I'm curious if we can workshop that in. I know that in D&D lore, they worship Yeenoghu, an evil god, but could that be altered in some fashion?

Also a gnoll isn't a must-have, just that their cackles have been resonating within my headspace for a few days now and I want to put it into words lol.

I'll throw my hat into the ring, though I'm busy with college I often have a few hours to spare every week 😁. Now I will admit I'm not the greatest at making long extensive backstories all from the get go, I like to evolve ideas through RP or bouncing ideas back and forth, so if you're willing to be patient for me to bounce ideas of others or to let me expand the backstory as we go (I always pass changes by the GM before making changes that aren't just grammar and whatnot) I'll gladly join, if not GL with the RP and no hard feelings. Also if you let me in, I'm going to bug you a lot about lore, I'm a complete sucker for setting lore and I love getting immersed in it.
LuckyDubs LuckyDubs Ayyy I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thinking of divinity!

LuckyDubs LuckyDubs EldridSmith EldridSmith Hoyo!

Sure! I'm willing to workshop whatever kinds of characters you want so long as they fit the world of a medieval fantasy setting!

Since we're gaining a bit of interest, now up to 3 not counting myself, I'll go ahead and get started with crafting the lore and mechanics pages. They're gonna be quite extensive, so you'll have plenty to get immersed in. Lol.

Cheers!

I have linked a new Lore and Mechanics page for ya'll to the top of this thread.

Here it is for your convenience: Fantasy - Divinity Unbound: The Dragon Goddess (Lore and Mechanics)

Please give it a read through to learn a bit more about the world and the magic system, and if you have any questions feel free to throw them my way either here or in a PM.

Please don't post in the Lore/Mechanics thread itself as it exists purely for information purposes.

Cheers!

I'm wondering if you expect us to know anything our character in relationship to this setting beyond their typical name, age, address, general personality, and general background. The character I would like to write is rather young and might not have an extensive history in comparison to an elf who has lived for centuries.

For the most part you don't have to know the relationship to the setting beyond the usual suspects. Lemme give you a map of the world (which I will add to the Lore/Mechanics page since it took me forever to find the damn thing, lol)

Yellow = Humans
Teal = Elves (normal, Dark and High Elves)
Green = Nymphs, Faeries, Treants, Naiads, and Spriggans
Blue = Sirens and Merfolk (Sirens are coastal, Merfolk are out to sea or in large lakes)
Light Purple = Aerolians and Errit
Blue/Gray = Giants
Orange = Dwarves
Brown = Kobolds, Sylthii, and Harosians
Pink = Succubi
Gray/Black = Orcs
Red = Goblins and Imps (Goblins are in the mountains in the East, Imps are all the little ones scattered everywhere else)

View attachment NEW_MAP.jpg

Hopefully that gives a better idea of the world (ish). Again, you don't need to know that much about the setting so much as the mechanics on the lore/mechanics page I've attached to this thread.

So long as your character fits a medieval magical RP world, it's probably gonna be fine. I'll be sure to let you know if there's anything about your intended character that might clash with any other mechanics or elements of the lore.

I'll work on my character once my homework is done, I've got a few characters I can easily repurpose: human gambler (wild magic), a... human or humanish healer whose powers work by moving life force from one creature to another (basically I'm a healer but...) (Life magic), a goblin rogue (shadow magic), a nature dragon with a human form (nature magic), and if none of those fit I can do something entirely new.

First three sound okay.

Dragons aren't playable though. Sorry about that.

To be clear, do our characters have to be proficient in magic?

Not at all.

Magic is just a part of the world that's there for your use if you want it. Otherwise, you can have a character with no magical ability at all if you so desire.

Also, map's cool! Is there anything a bit more colorblind-friendly?

Also, map's cool! Is there anything a bit more colorblind-friendly?

Oof. Uh, I don't know. I made that map a while ago and never considered color blindness.

I could share a black and white version, or at least a version that has no borders drawn on it so you can kind of map things out separately if needed.

I'm not sure what the best course would be for altering it to suit color blindness. Sorry about that.

We can keep it as is, I just won't know exactly which race is where lol.

So to keep everyone in the loop on what I'm considering for my character: Sylthii. Can be either a sort of frontline or ambusher. If I do magic, it'd be magic circles or sealing, most likely. But sort of a big if, I like the idea of being the group's bodyguard/scout/muscle. Depends on how the group is composed.

Provided you're still looking for more players, I'm greatly interested in this idea. Given my ever-growing hunger for medieval fantasy content, and the sheer amount of depth in this world, I'd be foolish not to throw my hat in the ring. Also, that’s a solid map. Do you happen to remember what program you used to make it?
