The western territories were to be the next great adventure of mankind. As some settled comfortably in the east, those with ambition and a fire under their saddles to explore the untouched wilds of God’s country set their eyes on the rolling mountains, dense forests, and rolling rivers of the west.
There was gold and silver in those hills, there to be seized by those with the gumption to pan a river or drive a shaft. A man could build something for himself and his own with his two hands without Uncle Sam pilfering his pocket. The Dakota territories saw their fair share of westward pioneers, looking to carve a slice of the American pie for themselves. We’ve heard the tales of Yankton and Deadwood. But there is another town in the black hills that goes unmentioned in the history books.
This is Coldwater. A rough and ready mining camp slowly growing as all sorts seek to make their mark on the new frontier. But while they hunt the hills for shafts of precious metal, something wicked is brewing in the shadows between the tangled pines.
⥈
On a midsummer night under the watchful eye of the full moon, Elmo Crane, a local trapper camping in the foothills near the town flees for his life through the trees.
The beasts that pursue him fly through the woods on two legs, fangs bared, claws outstretched. Howls fill the night.
Elmo’s old heart races. If there is a shred of mercy in the world, the old organ, battered with years of bacon lard and whiskey will give out before the things in the woods overtake him.
The black hills of the Dakota territory are without mercy.
Elmo’s wail of terror and pain mingles with the unearthly howls that fill the night.
In the town of Coldwater, the residents, new arrivals and old hands alike, sleep fitfully beneath the full moon.
⥈
You are a resident of Coldwater, here in search of fortune, fame, infamy, or a fresh start. But when Elmo’s ravaged body is hauled back to town, your hopes and dreams become entangled in terror.
What will you and your fellow townsfolk do in the face of the monsters that lurk among the pine woods and craggy hills outside of the safety of the town limits?
This RP will involve investigation of the threat that hangs over the town. Discovering the origins of the creatures that hunt in the night are the key to stopping their reign of terror.
All the while, life goes on. There is room for friendship, conflict, perhaps even romance in Coldwater.
If you are brave enough to face the wilds of the untamed west, and the terror that lurks in the black hills, read on.

"Love thy neighbor, but don't trust him..."
Coldwater
⥈
The town of Coldwater began as a mining camp when traces of silver and gold were found in the nearby hills. Named for the chill water of the creeks that run out of the nearby mountains, Coldwater has grown from a tent-camp into a one street town, with new arrivals, new homes, and new businesses popping up week by week. Law is meagre, a solitary Sheriff and his deputies being all that stands between the rough and rowdy town and the total lawlessness of the frontier. Rumor has it that Dakota may be applying to the Union for statehood, but until such time, Coldwater is on its own.
Players may define what businesses exist in the town, but are encouraged to remember, Coldwater is small, there's only room for one saloon.
Angus McTeague
⥈
Angus McTeague is the patriarch of the McTeague family, an unusual brood that live in a solitary homestead deep in the woods outside of Coldwater. The McTeagues are know to be furtive, even hostile when strangers approach their land, and they are only seen in town once every few months when they come to trade furs for basic supplies. Most believe them to be religious zealots, half crazy, or both. Rumors of darker doings have been spread around, but none that have been substantiated.
Beulah McTeague
⥈
Almost no one in Coldwater has laid eyes on Angus' wife, Beulah McTeague. A quiet, plain, shrewish woman who keeps the McTeague homestead while her husband and two sons manage the trapping, hunting, and trading. Those who have seen her noted that there was an uncanny resemblance between Beulah and her husband, fostering the uncharitable rumor that there may be an issue of shared parentage between them. It would certainly explain the sorry appearance of the two McTeague sons.
Isaiah McTeague
⥈
Isaiah McTeague is the baby of the McTeague family. At least he is the youngest offspring that anyone in the town is aware of. Some have whispered that there may be a whole passle of younger McTeague children at the secluded homestead, and if any of them are half as ugly as Lyle, they must be a sorry sight indeed. Lyle is feared by every honest woman in Coldwater, and most of the men give him a wide berth when he comes to town. As far as anyone can remember he has never said a word to man, woman, or child outside of his own family, but the hungry look in his eyes speaks volumes.
Lyle McTeague
⥈
Lyle McTeague is the eldest son of Angus and Beulah. Unlike his brother, Lyle has once or twice wandered down into town to avail himself of the saloon and an accommodating whore, but he is hard pressed to find a lady of ill-repute in the town willing to tolerate the stink of his unwashed beard or the wolfish grin that always plays across his face.

Coldwater draws people from all walks of life. Entrepreneurs looking to add to their fortunes, young men and women seeking adventure, families looking for a new start, everyone should have a reason to come to Coldwater and something that keeps them here despite the dangers of the frontier and the evil in the woods. Not everyone in town is going to be a badass gunslinger. A town like Coldwater would have Saloon keepers, madams and whores, veterans, black smiths, prospectors, preachers, gamblers, farmers, trappers, trailguides, and countless others. Nothing says any of those people couldn't pick up a gun and be a crack shot, but really think about what will give the town character and texture.
While the main antagonists of this story will be the McTeague family, who have become werewolves, this is not going to be a world where there is a lot of knowledge about werewolves. there are no supernatural investigators, no werewolf hunters, just townsfolk trying to learn how to survive before its too late. Feel free to roll multiple characters if you want to play one of the victims of the McTeagues. I'm even okay with you playing a werewolf, as long as we can all agree that, in this world, there are no good or kind werewolves.
⥈
I'll be playing the town Sheriff, and my job will be to try an maintain a certain amount of order, but the west is called wild for a reason. Feel free to inject additional conflict to the plot, but be aware if things get out of hand I may have to toss you in jail for the night. I can take on one or two deputies depending on how many people join the RP.
⥈
If you want to run a business in the town there are two requirements. 1. Try not to start the same business as another player, we can't have a whole town full of saloons, and 2. Do a little research beforehand about whether a tiny mining town in the old west would have the kind of business you want to start. Yes there are going to be werewolves in this RP, but other than that I would love for it to have a certain degree of realism. The HBO show Deadwood is my main inspiration for Coldwater, so if you've seen that, you know the kind of feel I'm looking for.

⥈ An outlaw in hiding
