  • Always down to write anything. As a mercenary I am here to challenge myself while helping anyone in need of writing partner. I seek a challenge! Challenge me!!
Dude, I feel so sorry for you. XD My SO literally has been talking about these issues for a while and I'm glad I found someone like-minded in that department. And I'm the same way. XD

However, I do want to say that while I love making characters more than plot or environment, I do try my best to incorporate all three and I tend to shift from making the plot around the character, to writing for the character to get started, to then writing about the character because the plot challenges them in some way that it becomes largely unfair. XD I like torturing them.

Character death of a friend is fun. Used to hate it, now I don't. Just as long as it fits the plot.

And I think that makes for a great backdrop. Now all you need is a smaller scale plot, or develop the one going on in the heavens a little more

Yea, I need to figure out the deity's personalities, goals, and perspectives of each other, then I gotta add the continents and geography, add some society and other stuff (which we can add along the way) and then we can find a plot. XD

    Keep me in the loop!
why do so many writers struggle in RP when their characters are met with conflict of any kind posed by their writing partners?

I'm afraid I have to agree with you 100% and it's a shame. Idk, maybe I just see the limitation of control as an opportunity for more challenging writing. That may have tondo though with how little stock i put into personal investment into characters rather than crafting a collaborative story

(Second part of the answer, internet died before and then I had a visit to the dentist, so sorry about the delay)

Another thing that often happens is just poor character design. This happens most frequently with newer players or players that are generally unconcerned with making a character that is functional within a narrative with their own skills. A specific kind of bad design- the kind designer with only an ideal image in mind and that therefore makes that image the character’s identity (note: I don’t mean a picture, but rather the idealized version of what the player wants the character to be. For instance, a player that makes a character to be the most beautiful center of attention, but fails to account for the fact that other people’s characters aren’t bound to fawn over their character or even find them “beautiful”). When confronted, these idealized characters often don’t stand up to scrutiny on their own fields, which can very well threaten their whole point for that player.

This kind of thing becomes even more common if the RP’s plot/concept is inherently competitive,as the fear of being “useless” can often turn into a pissing contest.

Certainly. There is this whole theory about how people choose avatars to represent themselves online and specifically kn games and how they either have a collaborative relationship with this avatars (to accomplish a task together or the avatar is just a tool in a set of other tools) OR they are a mask to fall into and embody. Escapist power fantasies of idealized characters are the version we see in RPs. And like you said, moreso by newer writers who aren't looking to be challenged, but rather to flex their fantasy muscles. I just think that RPs wouldn't just be more interesting, but also have more longevity if writers were more cognitive of some of those basic literary techniques. But thats like saying "don't write unless you know how to write!" And I don't want to say that. My complaint is Moreno a reaction to that sort of undeveloped technique and the ones that refuse to grow past it. To the writers who care more about their characters than the stories they decide to inser themselves into. Its a damn shame.
characters are so important to people. Am I the only one who honestly couldn't care less?

Also I commend you Daisie for writing your plot and environments to supplement your characters. I am not condemning the writing of character, but trying to bring to awareness that many writers only write for them rather than about them. They exist and its not good writing. I find it heartbreaking an annoying.

Well, I don't blame them at all, honestly. :) Most of us are inspired to write our own characters thanks to the wonderful and admirable characters produced by TV shows, books, or other works. Most people originally come to RP because they've seen a character they've fallen in love with elsewhere, and that has inspired them to strive to make their own beautiful work... Which takes time to master.

You're right. Perhaps my opinion is a bit harsh, but It is difficult to overlook these things after one has been writing for so long. For me this is something to get off my chest and I don't see this trend ending anytime soon. It is been the most popular way of writing since the late 20th century. I don't see it going away anytime soon, however there have been many upsets that are remarkably wonderful to enjoy, even on this website.
It's so much fun putting on so many different hats. I don't really like making RP's as much as I like helping give a person's story color with my storytelling. I'll play whatever you want!

"Finally, I've made it." I stuff my Beretta in my underwear and cowboy walk my way over to the Lycan trick, trying to forget I forgot my wallet in the car.
