Its a comfort to know I'm not alone in my seemingly inflammatory feelings about monolithic character writing. I think your approach is great! Its a fantastic evolution. I was never a good writer when I wanted to make comics. All I could do was draw, but just like anything else you have to practice your craft. I suppose while maybe it is self masturbatory I do feel that that education has left me a bit jaded when it comes to this long time teenage pass time that is RPing

Yea, I've been practicing this craft for 9 years since I was 13. It sucks to know and be a part of RPs that feel like a slice-of-life RP within a fantastical utopia of "no one is butthurt" but I also hate seeing no "normal" characters. Characters that are just your average everyday person. While I don't mind a few tragic backstories here and there or having a mystical macguffin device when appropriate, make the personality and behaviors of the person realistic. I absolutely hate it when a character has a tragic backstory and then they do the thing that caused their tragic backstory, my character questions them, and then the player gets butthurt because "since it was done to them, they have a reason to do it to others and everybody should be okay with it."

BICH no XD

Nail on the head. 1millon points to gryffindor!

Fabulous characters in a dystopia story about people hurt off screen, no one with speaking roles die and yet everything sucks. But thats about it. So what do? Don't break out the magnifine glass on someone's characters. They're suppose to be Byronic, brooding super persons with a chip on their shoulder, a troubled past and nothing to loose. Dont question it

But thats different. In a world where every moral idea is grey at best and dehumanizing at worst breed characters like that. But they don't have any bearance in a setting with hardly any conflict, especially when the player doesn't perpetuate it to allow their character to grow and make those decisions or even tell me that this direction was okay to begin with. But if people don't want character death to happen or let them struggle when they have other characters to back them up, then whats the point of playing a game?

And my character at the time was a very "just" person. Seeing their "friend" do that to someone was like a slap in the face, so my character asked them what gives and the player got mad that I questioned their character's motives. XD even though it wasn't technically me, it was my character. I already knew why they do that, and the thought process was flawed. If they went about it and talked as their character instead of being butthurt about it and talking to me personally about it, I would have been more than fine.

I have made broody characters before and they are kind of hard to write for due to the flawed thought processes and aloof personality. I can still do it, but its difficult to do it when there is a thin line between acceptable and badass to very unlikable character that doesn't seem to be redeemable due to the actions and thought processes mentioned.

Sorry for the rant. XD My brain took your post as literal as can be, and not sarcastic which I assumed some of that was sarcasm. I just have had... lots of experiences with this kind of shit and it bothers the absolute fuck out of me that it happens. Had a guy in another site tried to join an RP and their character had motives and a path that could lead them towards becoming a villain than a hero in a My Hero Academia setting (due to having no quirk, his family hating him and probably abusing/neglecting him, and his uncle exploiting his anger to do "good"). Since he also had no quirk and gadgets that aren't necessary (like how the navel laser belt for a canon character was necessary or else there'd be lots of beams firing off) and are only used for combat, he wouldn't be able to enter the school if there are many better qualified people. And he also had the personality that kept him from actually saving anyone to get thr "secret" points. The problem was his gadgets are all smoke related, so I feel like just giving the guy a Smoke Quirk would have been better than oversaturating the guy with gadgets he realistically wouldn't enter a high school program with. And this guy was 16 and said to master three martial arts and have a lot of physical qualities kids that age have a hard time getting, especially when there is no good teacher that isn't a mechanic.

This was mainly what I was talking about. XD Sorry this was so long.

Plus, his character's personality wasn't befitting of a kid who was neglected and abused for most of his young life, so I went on an entire rant about it to him about how unrealistic and hurtful his character was and that there was no realistic way to redeem this character, making those who relate to his character upset. And that if he wanted to go through an abusive backstory, check survivors and people who have made stories about their experiences before writing something that could end up triggering someone, especially when I have someone who I love dearly be abused and manipulated his entire life.

I seemed to have hit the 2,000 character limit. Twice. Good lord. XD

But anyway, I do want to RP with you. I am currently in the works of a non-fandom world, but it is literally bare bones if you can even call it that XD

#1 that whole thing was so hilarious only because of how absurd the situation was. At the same time very sad that its a true story. Nevertheless what can you with younger, newer writers? That was a situation bound to happen. I've had plenty of experience with players like that and the factnofnthe matter is that they're in it for the power fantasy, not the story craft. I have an especially "broody" character who i feel i have gone out of my way to balance despite their inherently overpowered abilities that I wrote back a while ago. While I still enjoy the the thought of them the fact of the matter is that a character like that needs to get back in the lab and be reassessed, full stop. And players need to reassess their priorities as well. Im not saying don't be emotional, dont get attached. Im saying don't let it get in the way of something wonderful that can only happen if you could only let go.

Non-fandoms are my favorite! Feel free to message me and hit me with it any time!

Hehehe when I meant barebones, I meant it as an overexaggeration. XD there isn't a whole lot, but I was making a world about dragons (because dragons are my favorite creatures) but there are also humanoid creatures similar to what you'd see in DnD, but they are mostly monstrous humanoids and then there are some mythological creatures. XD like a supernatural world where I was going to say a haven, but it definitely isn't. It is rife with conflict and most creatures don't live half their expected lifespans due to this. They breed quickly and young just to keep their lineage going without killing each other. The pantheon of gods are true dragons while those on the planet are made somewhat in their image. The dragons come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and power, but they are usually killed before they have a chance to get to early adulthood due to them harboring the personalities and goals of the dragon deity's constellation they were born under.

Be wary that this is my sixth revision of how this world works. XD

Sounds interesting. If I'm understanding correctly. A world with a Draconic pantheon and civilization similar to a warring states period that are killing each other in their diety's likeness because "Deus Valt, Infidels!" Am I right?
Merciless Medic
Merciless Medic
Sounds about right. XD we have in the pantheon the god of war and passion, goddess of lust and fertility, goddess of justice and neutrality, god of darkness and ideals, god of light and truth, goddess of famine and prosperity, and goddess of peace and harmony. I think I have more.

I was trying to develop a language as well but it isn't working XD there is a god of gods who created the universe and the pantheon to create a world of their own. However, due to conflicting ideas and goals, they ended up creating a world filled with suffering.

Thats literally all I have. XD
