Viewpoint Do you ever play the opposite gender? Do you prefer it?

It is more of a psychological thing, and before I go further, I (as a full fledged male) started RPing a male alongside my RP debut when I was about 9 or so, the type of clueless half metagaming half OOC in IC type of RP where people try to avoid you like the plague but you don't even realize it since you're having fun simply writing stuff in your own world, you'd be just fine RPing with yourself at this point, it doesn't matter, everything shines like a golden jewel to you even the kind of RP you'd look back now and think to yourself "Did this really happen?".

As I grew more proficient, which also led me to learning about anime which quickly peaked my interest, I grew to prefere playing a female due to personal respect for the gender (I am no feminist, but I respect a female who makes herself respected (duh?)), i'd find it even hard after one year, to play a male, and yes that included more sexual content as well, I find it more enlightening than shamefull since it implied I'd have the ability to create believable to realistic content from a gender that is not mine, implying I had the knowledge/imagination to do so.

A few years later and I've been playing exclusively male, having realized that while I enjoyed the female RP, I deviated from who I really was, I grew accustomed to it to the point that if I suddently became a female IRL I'd feel like nothing changed, which didn't bother me but it made me think a little bit, until the point I realized that I had done enough as a female character to test my abilities in doing unconventional things, which led me to return to my own gender and stick to it, now not even really considering playing a female due to being comfortable with what I have.

After playing a female character for a long while and then returning to the male side for the rest of my RP career (which now spans 9 years, nothing to brag about, but simply a statement) I've come to realize it is likely for a young shy/introverted/unsecure male to play a female due to his own (pardon the word) weakness making him see himself closer to a shy woman rather than a shy man, to him most men are the kind of "alpha" thing he sees himself way bellow to.

While it is more rare to find females RPing males because it implies (generally) that the female has more of a masculine-like mindset, implying, a form of ambition, desire to build something of your own and usually, on your own, or just the idea of being physicaly equal to males for the sake of challenging them to see who can build something better.

Now, all of this is my theorizing and from my own experience, not everyone falls bellow that category, but a good amount of people I've interacted with used to or still do.

So as to the question, yes I prefere the opposite gender due to personal respect but I prefere playing my own because it allows me to express my true worth and qualities more, not to be sexist, but it is what I feel.

Although female in real life I find writing for a female boring. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I'm suuuuper up for it but I feel playing as a man it's more...adventurous. I don't know why, i just prefer playing as a man rather than a female, more to work with i guess.

I mean I've heard write about what you know, so that always makes me feel more comfortable as a girl but I'm currently in a a couple of role plays that I rather play just male or both female and male. The male scientist x Fairy. Male guard soldier and Angle princess x Demon prince and female maid and I honestly don't mind doing either,

As a writer, I usually gravitate toward male characters even as a female. I think I have a similar reasoning to someone else in this thread. Female characters are hard to get right because of how they are harshly judged by audiences. I do sometimes write LGBT females, but when it comes to RP I usually stick to males. :ghost: I would really like to start writing more female characters though.

i cannot write a female character for the life of me. i have 2 whole characters lmao because my character creation process is so in depth that i cannot pull em outta my ass....nd i just...cant write women...

I do play the opposite gender. And there are times I prefer it and others when it I don't, and even other times I have no preference. It all depends on the plot and the character for me anyway.

I'm a big gay, so I don't play women for any sort of romance, as I'm sure quite a few people do, but in the end they're half the population, and can make for very interesting characters with different outlooks and dynamics. It'd be a shame to never explore that side of roleplay and writing.

I almost always play the opposite gender, because I'm lowkey trans but indifferent enough to not be that bothered by it too much.

I have written some stellar ladies, and can do so quite adeptly, but this is escapism and storytelling. Best to make someone unlike yourself, yes? It also helps you grow as a writer, I think.

I prefer playing the opposite gender. I think it's just because playing females, most expect the character to either be super girly and ditsy or super macho and I always find myself falling into the trend. Men are just easier to play for me.

Back when I started RPing, I generally picked my opposite--male. For various reasons that frankly don't matter anymore. XD Now I'm balanced between the two, though the ratio does favor female because of certain story aspects that have happened in recent years.

Really, people just intrigue me, so I have no qualms having male or female muses. I feel as if I have a good handle on both.

kinda partial to rping girls, and generally find it a lotta more fun. just need a bit more practice playing dudes and other genders i suppose

I definitely roleplay males more often. However, I enjoy playing female side characters if we are doubling up.

When I first started roleplaying I was quite young, and played almost exclusively male characters (despite being female OOC) because I absolutely refused to get trapped in the damsel. I wanted to be the hero, or the bad guy, or someone otherwise equally bad***, and genuinely believed I had to play a male character to be allowed to do that.
It's about a 50/50 split now, and I still refuse to play damsels. It just somehow took a while to knock the idea that the guy had to be the strong powerful one out of my head.

I don’t remember if I mentioned this before but I have zero preference in gender.

However I hate art for males. I think art all looks gross and male actors look too stylized. So whenever I have to use a visual medium of some sort I will always play a female.

But with just written descriptions I will play either gender equally.

Female who almost entirely RPs girls (or 3000 year old female spirits, or female dragons, or.... you get the idea), but I do enjoy playing male characters a lot - it's just that the vast majority of my ideas end up being female. When a dude worth playing comes up hell yeah I'll play them out though. I love 'em both.

I'm a female, and we're bitchy as hell. Therefore, I like to create male characters. I struggle so much with female characters for some reason.

I play both, but playing males is especially fun for me. I just don't do it all that often in rp, because I'm always a little shy and worried I don't play them right. But when I write for myself, alone, I love to write male characters.

I dabble in both. It has nothing to do with myself psychologically or biologically. I simply just use either gender that would better fit or support a story. That and I believe that writing on both ends improves writing and perspective.

I wouldn't worry about it. Characters are fictional people they can literally be anyone/anything we want. As long as you are consistent to the character you created you can't go wrong.

(When I say consistent I mean don't say your character is super shy and then have them throwing house parties every weekend and hanging out in large crowds.)

Yeah, I guess you're right. That makes sense. Well.. I plan on daring to rp male characters more often in the future.
