Experiences Whats making you angry today? Rp pet peeves

The classic "Hey, let's discuss this RP you advertised for while I'm going to ask you to follow my requirements, even though they're the complete opposite of the requirements you posted in your ad."

It makes me wonder if people sometimes just skip the Rules & Requirements sections in someone's post on purpose in the hopes that the OP still will abide by their rules. I don't mean to be a pessimist, but considering it's happening a little too often... Y'know, for a platform that requires you to read in order to get anything done, people sure as hell don't read as much.

All I ask for is for people to take no more than 2 minutes to check my rules and compare them with their own, such as the post length and post frequency. It is literally impossible for me to write 6 full paragraphs at least once a day. I have a life outside of the internet that I deem more important.

For me it has to be when someone messages me about potential rp, especially if it's something I was excited to do but then completely disappears into oblivion after I message back to start ping ponging ideas.

Like um... Thanks for wasting my time, I guess? Lol

why would i join a rp where i have to compete for limited roles? if i can choose between a rp where all have to do is say "aye, aye" and participate and i'm in, or do the hard work first before probably being considered... why would i choose the latter option? different characters won't have hugely different dynamics because the gm already knows what role the character's going to fill. skill/creativity isn't objective either--how is one character "better" or "more creative" than another--so that can't be it. if it's to filter "bad" characters out, again, what's bad? if you set a standard for the sign-up, and they meet the standard, what's wrong? there's no fomo, at least for me, because rpn is pretty active with new group rps. there's no guarantee that the rp has more lasting power than those without limited spots. i'd have to be an asshole to get enjoyment from one-upping somebody else at simply getting to write posts for a character they created... is it a clique thing, to keep people you have no/bad experiences with out without having to be open about it? but i heard rpn wasn't really cliquish??

i'm not necessarily peeved, i'm just confused on how this is convenient for anyone other than a gm who can't negotiate.

I know everyone is sick of me complaining all the time. But this post is different. I promise. So here's my experience with group roleplays. When I was trying to continue my roleplay while my partner was busy, I had to try my hand in group roleplays. I felt confident in the group I had. We started and things went great for the night before we all went to sleep. But then the girl who played Tabitha had to leave Amino forever due to personal reasons. I'm like "Okay, I understand, I'll just grab myself a new one. How hard can It be?" Pretty hard. I've tried everything to get a Tabitha and nothing. So I switched to plan B, altering the plot and letting people use their characters. It stopped completely during the character selection process. At that point, we tried continuing with only two people but it fell out. That what made me angry, trying to get a replacement. What's your angry moments with group roleplays?

So I wouldn’t say these made me angry so much as frustrated.

1. Was a group I was a player in, I was among the first people to sign up and my character was one of the first to be accepted by the GM. Well some random person popped in for an afternoon and accused me of making a Mary Sue. So the GM said I had to change my entire character backstory. Keeping in mind the person who made the complaint didn’t join the roleplay or even hang out in the chat. They were around for like an hour or two at most.

2. I was GMing and someone tried to apply for my roleplay by making a over powered character with no weaknesses. I told them no you have to have weaknesses to join. So they basically said “my characters weakness is villains of comparable strength.”

I was like “no, have a nice day”.

thank you, someone said it. i've been meaning to join a grp since i joined the site and after looking at the gms' profiles i realized that, it's not really a clique, but it kinda is. i mean don't get me wrong, sometimes i do see gms accept a wide variety of users they've never interacted with (to my knowledge, i don't go out of my way to stalk them or whatever) and that's great! and it's also great to recruit your friends into the grps you create, what else are friends for if not to be creative and vibe with? but it just rubs me the wrong way when i see a bunch of people who haven't coded their posts get looked over and ignored entirely. luckily, i don't think that bbcode thing is still a prevalent issue; i mainly saw that kind of stuff on much older grps, but i think it's still worth mentioning since most of that behavior was in grps where there were limited roles.

Well, not to invalidate that issue, but some GMs can't handle too many players. My personal limit is 4. And a lot of times the limited slots allows for filtering out the writers that can meet the GM's expectations. You wouldn't want to be in a GRP where everyone's exchanging bland 1 liners that tell nothing, would you?

Having muse and nothing to reply to, lol. Seems I might need to pick up more RP's.

dude if everyone else uses fancy code, and nobody's "worse" than anyone else, i would drop the person with the code lmao. BUT i would add a rule in the first place that says "pls code" because people should know. zero drama

no i think that's also a benefit. i want to think there's a way to put a player limit as a gm without basically having to grab-bag random sign-ups and potentially waste a few peoples' time. i assume just being communicative in-general.

i guess you could tell writing experience from sign-ups? i haven't actually seen a situation where someone seemingly had far less experience writing than everyone else, but then again, that's probably because it's already a pretty competitive vibe.

Well, I personally have met players who'll write a novel for a backstory, and then when it's time to RP they can barely turn out two sentences without being told "Hey, we're gonna need a little more information than that." But I can understand the frustration.

first-come first-serve reservations i suppose? i've had this discussion before and i think that was the conclusion that amounted to previously, where the way to go was to accept applications based on writing samples so no one really loses out unless they really wanted the roleplay and didn't beat the others to it i guess ;;

and yeah! usually the writing experience in sign-ups comes up in how they describe the personality/backstories or even just the concept as a whole.
different characters won't have hugely different dynamics because the gm already knows what role the character's going to fill.
i do wanna ask what you meant by this, though, bc i can't seem to quite understand it entirely!

as for why they join,, (speaking from a loser who only joins application-based roleplays) i think most of us are relatively unfazed when being rejected + don't really bank all their hopes on it either. the pros outweigh the cons for them, i suppose, where the pros are knowing your gm will be sifting out applicants based on writing standards so you don't have a random one-liner among multi-para roleplayers or having a smaller group to write & interact with.

While we're on the subject of certain kinds of gms: GMs that cannot make their mind up about anything or remember any previous discussions.

I remember discussing with a GM in the past about an in-character course of action and the consequences of it, and last minute the GM changed her mind without telling me and wiped all the build up for a wholly unsatisfying result.

when i try to plot with someone and they just blindly agree with everything i say. like no pls we’re supposed to come up w a plot together pls stop saying ‘yes’ and ‘that’s okay’ to everything.. i feel like i’m controlling the whole plot and it just turns me off the whole rp, please give me feedback. your opinion matters too ._.

or when you come up with an fun plot that u both agree on and send a starter and they never reply </3

I've seen this in 1x1 as well. The "Oh, yeah, I forgot." Or "I thought this would be better." people who are apparently zoned out of the RP but still replying for some reason or just decide the plot plan wasn't as fun as they thought and decided to not mention it and do whatever. The first I pretty quickly shoot down by pointing out they can either wait to reply or admit they don't want to RP. The second can vary by just exactly how big a change they just pulled randomly.

I've gotten the impression from people that once discussion starts they suddenly weren't as sure they wanted to RP as they sounded. Or something turned their interest off and they just don't want to say. I had someone seem really animated until they showed me a character and compared it too some fandom thing and when I admitted I didn't know anything about the fandom thinking they would explain what exactly the similar power was it just blahed out completely.

Most of my character ideas are for cool powers and twist on archetype. When I go I have no idea where to begin lol. Like I'm working on a cool non-binary salamander ronin time-displaced Samurai Jack style into the present day, but I have no idea what to do with their personality or goals or anything.

Me being complete trash at coming up with plots. It seems to turn off almost all potential partners :(

having a thousand assignments due, opening up two day care centres, and working full time -- but still wanting to search for eight new 1x1 roleplays and 2 group roleplays that I've been craving for ages, and coding all the codes o(* ̄▽ ̄*)ブ

not to mention I spontaneously booked in for a tattoo appointment yesterday cause I was le stressed teehe

I sympathize with this greatly, I've been out of practice with RP in general, and back in my day plotting extensively beforehand wasn't really a thing so it's a thing I struggle to latch onto.

That, and when people assume you don't care for a thread because you haven't responded yet/in a while and lack the spoons to tackle it. That's my biggest gripe trying to find partners, Activity is their biggest must and there's a shortage of willing partners for low-spoon roleplayers such as myself. These people ironically do the ghosting they so claim to happen, in my own experience, even when I eventually get back to them longer than they wanted of me.

I hate it when i start a 1x1 rp with someone and after a while they ask me what fandom my character is from and i tell them its not from any fandom but is instead just a character from a book i am writing because i mostly rp for development on those characters and they say "oh well then i dont know your character" and then they never reply to me again even though throughout the rp that we had been doing for a month i had clearly explained enough about my specific character that they should know them like a sibling. So basically i dislike people who only rp fandom and don't even try to rp something original... which is much more fun in my opinion.

My second pet peeve is when you are rping with someone and they completely take control of your character as well as their own and make them do something that goes completely out of character and overall ruins the rp experience as a whole... i admit i have ghosted a few people after they did that because the only thing they really succeeded in doing was look like a complete jackass... (pardon my language... i know there are kids who reads these so i guess ill just um.... yeah... kids dont open the spoiler...

Well, for what it's worth I don't care if people respond slowly or even ghost completely. I understand since I've done it myself due to struggling with mental illness. I'm very much a "just reply when able" type of RPer.

Ugh. Several things on my mind today.
Tried another website and got several partners the first day. Con? With many partners comes the bad bunch that are not compatible with my style. Or anyone who likes a considerate partner.

1. "Are you ok with (thing I said I'm ok with in my rules)?"
YES, didn't you read my freakin' search post? It was stated right there that I'm fine with that very thing! Did you even read it?! I didn't write that stuff for it to get ignored, you know! Do you need to borrow my eyes for a second??

2. One-sided planning
I'm all for helping my partner plan their half and contributing to the plot for it, but when that's all they want to talk about... is their side... hrghh, you know I'm here, too, right? Also, my rules explicitly stated that effort should go into both halves. I'm part of this RP!! I want something out of it, too!! I'm not your writing servant! I have this happen so much to me, it's so freakin' frustrating. My desperation for RP partners causes me to take it even though it ultimately ruins the experience. Why do I do this to myself?

3. More one-sided bs
Only wanting their character to have the "get-to-know-me" spotlight. I like learning about other's OCs (I love it, actually) but all the attention. Is on them. When I try to say something, it gets ignored. C'mon, I have a character as well... I wanna talk about him...
Also-
Giving a well-written novel for their character and shitting out a sentence or two for me. Haha, thanks. Doubling at its prime.

4. Even more one-sided bs
You'll write the starter? Okay!
(They only write their character into the starter)
Achievement unlocked: Piss VXNTAS off

(Edit: fifth reason that I randomly remembered)

5. Partners that don't help set the scene, plot, or really... anything
I'm a guy who loves to plot. I really like figuring things out, and I make sure people know this by stating I am someone who wants to figure things out in my description. I don't like freeform or anything near it. So when I'm met with someone who makes absolutely no effort to help me in doing so, I find myself setting the scene for both parties with no assistance. It's... kind of annoying! Just throw me anything, please!

Honestly, all these problems could be avoided if I spoke up for myself. Sigh. Being overly polite kind of sucks.

(Part of the same edit: I re-read this for the 100th time and realize I probably came off as overly-pissy. I deal with this stuff a lot so I hope that explains all the frustration I've been harboring to then spill on this post, all over the unsuspecting users who just wanted to vent a little. oops.)

I'm not sure I understand point #4 here. I always thought starters were for setting the scene and introducing your own character and then finally having them come together in subsequent posts.

Typically in the settings I RP, all characters are present in the beginning. By only starting with theirs (and also typically beginning interactions with the canon character I'm supposed to play for them) , they're ignoring my side.
During discussion, if the RP were to introduce character by character, it would have been implemented with both sides fully aware.

Ah, you're referring to fandoms. Yea, I don't do fandoms at all. At least not with canons. I have no idea what my partner's character is going to be until they post.
