For centuries the kingdoms of Europe have been dominated by magic, every village had at least one witch, and the capital cities had entire counsels to advise the noble families on magical matters. Magical creatures inhabited every wild space between the pockets of humanity. During those golden years of magic, knights could be found fighting dragons and giants, and stories that would become famous were played out. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, and others, all lived out their stories and ever afters.

After all those ever afters, time moved as it always did. Technology advanced, and the dominance of magic fell by the wayside. An age of steam and factories came. New weapons drove knights off the battlefield. Great monster hunts drove dragons and giants to extinction. The elves and dwarves were brought out from their hidden cities into the great centers of trade. Witches were driven from the cities and towns, their magics replaced by medicine and sciences. Railways and roads linked together the disparate pockets of humanity into more modern countries. The old fairy stories eventually faded to just that; stories.

Magic, now forced to the background, became vested in scattered sources. The first was the witches, who lived on the fringes of society, still weaving their charms and curses, and serving as healers in the reaches where the modern doctors could not be found. The second was the monsters, who lurked in the darkest of forests and caves, hunting their unfortunate human prey with a resentment and savage fury. The third were in relics, artifacts which often appear in legends and fairy tales, cursed fruits, magic mirrors, and spinning wheels. These are often prized by the nobles as quick fixes to difficult problems, and daring treasure hunters make their way delving into the ruins of the magic age to find them. the more helpful the effect of the artifact, the more the nobles are willing to pay for it.

The final, and greatest source of magic left in the world is the old fairies. Living in the middle of a mystical lake, guarded by a herd of unicorns, the fairy sisters guard the oldest magic of the world. With a whim they can rewrite the laws of reality to their own whims. Thankfully their apathy protects all but the most interesting mortals from their meddling. All but one that is.

In years past, the favorite pastime of the noble humans was the hunting of the Goyl. Named in spite after the sculptures that line cathedrals, this race appears human, save for the fact that all their bodies are mode wholly of stone. These creatures lived further underground than even the dwarves, and made their way in the world by trading gems and rare metals with the more tolerant races in caves near the surface. This made them ideal targets for humans looking to plunder their riches. All this changed when the scattered Goyl tribes were united by one king, and with a united army, struck back at the surface dwelling humans. These Goyl were championed not just by an army and king, but by a Dark Fairy.

Cast out by her sisters to roam the mortal world, the Dark Fairy granted the Goyl with her magic, and cursed the soft skinned races of the world. Any wound inflicted by the claws of the Goyl caused stone to grow on the skin, and thoughts of loyalty to the king of the Goyl to grow in the mind. From this curse grew an inexhaustible supply of soldiers for the conquering of Europe. Conquering the central nations of the continent and Establishing themselves as a great and terrifying power. The year is 1851, and the world stands on a precipice.

This is the world as you know it. Be you who you may, witch, soldier, spy, inventor, hunter, Human, Elf, Dwarf, Goyl. You have been called before the Duchess of Free Bavaria. A great task lies before you, and this world and its magic will either save you or destroy you in the end as you seek your fortune.

Oh dear, I haven't even figured out a character concept. I might have to do it tomorrow, for now, I must brainstorm.
