All things lost in the shadows
The world has become something of a strange place- governed by fear, suspicion, and betrayal. What caused everyone to fall into such a mind set? Well no one is quite sure when it started, but one day a baby was born with a word etched onto the inside of its forearm. There's much debate on what the word was, a number of different stories, but they all end the same. The word was an object, something simple like apple, car, or water, and the baby ended up dying to whatever the object was. After that, every child was born with a word imprinted on their arm. People tried covering them, having them surgically removed or burnt off, but they always came back. These things were the causes of everyone's death.
With the sudden wide spread weakness, people were easily tempted to take control of others- using them for their bidding or simply getting them out of the way. A greater exposure to the object led to a increased likelihood of dying. No one could be killed by anything but their object. They weren't invincible, but instead it was like some kind of luck. If someone tried shooting you the gun would malfunction, or if you were falling to your death you would land in just the right way to survive it. People became very protective of their words, keeping them hidden and steering clear of whatever the thing was. This was the starting point of everyone's distrust. Was there any way for society to reform itself? Was everyone forced to live a life in isolation?
