Saint Valentineโs College, Ithaca, New York. Established in 1895. Student body of one thousand. Co-ed. Specializing in the liberal and performing arts. Highly selective.
Saint Valโs is in a league of its own. It has the prestige and resources of any of the Ivy Leagues or Seven Sisters, but it has remained distinctly mysterious and off the grid. Tucked away in picturesque upstate New York, the grounds resemble something out of a romanticized academy movie: dorms are modest cottages with fireplaces and porches, students take their courses in looming gothic style spires, and church bells ring on the hour, every hour.
It feels like an incredibly rich place โ and it is, with about half of its students not receiving any need-based financial aid. Although recent student protests put pressure on the administration to begin admitting a higher proportion of students from diverse backgrounds (as in, not in the top 1%), Saint Valโs still doesnโt cater to them: this era of the collegeโs history is defined by its struggle with maintaining a diverse community without inclusion.
But anyway. Why did you choose Saint Valโs? You came here to read and write, to draw conclusions and extract new meaning from centuries old texts. You came here to learn ancient languages and translate them accurately, breathing new life into Plato and Socrates. You came here to sing and dance and perform at the highest possible level. Saint Valโs faculty are incredible and are consistently ranked as the best educators in the countryโthat much is undeniable.
Every place such as this has its wealth of secrets. The premier secret society at Saint Valentineโs College is the esteemed Love Club (a play off the Universityโs patron saint). Itโs not really clear to outsiders what the club actually does or what extra resources they have access to, but the members are undoubtedly the best students Saint Valโs has to offer: up and coming poets, published authors, brilliant researchers, competitive athletes and dancers, department award recipients, prestigious fellowship winners. An invitation to join is a formal acknowledgement of your excellence, and one of the most sought after accomplishments for a majority of students.
The illusion of perfection is shattered at exactly 2:17 A.M., September 6th.
A long standing tradition of the campus is a welcome back party (called the School's In Party), held by the Love Club on the first weekend of the semester. While their events are notorious for being invite-only, this celebration's invitation is extended to the entirety of the student body. This year, enjoying some uncharacteristically warm weather, the event was held in the campus' swimming facility. It wasn't until screams broke through the blaring music that a Love Club member was found dead, floating face down in the water.

The local news article reads: Jordan Ezekiel Young, twenty two, was found deceased in the campus' swimming pool at approximately 2 in the morning. Allegedly, the manner of death has been ruled an accidental drowning, as a large party to celebrate the beginning of semester was happening in the meantime. He was an extremely well known and loved student, and a prominent athlete of the school's lacrosse team. Our condolences go out to his family during this troubling time.
And so the chaos begins.

The Love Club - The Love Club is supposedly as old as the school itself. The original mission of the club hasnโt changed much since its inception: seek out the most promising students in each class year, bring them together, and ensure their success at Saint Valentineโs and beyond. Events have included, but are certainly not limited to: career workshops, resume writing, social outings and community building retreats, and alumni networking. No one really knows who administrates the Love Club behind the scenes, but a popular theory suggests they might be on the Saint Valentineโs Board of Trustees. (Where else could that kind of money come from?)
Itโs an atypical secret societyโalthough membership is highly coveted and generally accepted as prestigious, the Love Club isnโt much of a secret. Members of the club are permitted to disclose that they are members, but thatโs about all they can do. More specifically, a member cannot confirm or deny the identities of other member, and the date/time/location of club-only events is to be kept between members only. Unless one of these essential rules was for some reason broken on good faith, the only penalty for violating the secrecy of the Love Club is removal.
Also unlike other secret societies, the Love Club is quite active in the Saint Valโs student body, occupying a role somewhat adjacent to student government: the club is well known for sponsoring events with better free food and swag than the student elected officials could ever hope to afford, including the very popular off campus events known for their looser rules (ex: the annual Schoolโs In party). Most students hold positive opinions of the Love Club, although some struggle to accept the mysteriousness of it more than others do.
The Plot - If you recognize the name or general premise of this roleplay, you have a keen eye: this is the original Love Club roleplay you may have seen on this site in the past. It just grew up and went to college.
(In all seriousness, we thought a college setting would be better suited to explore the themes we wanted to without involving fictional minors. Why set something in high school if we wonโt accept members under eighteen years old anyway?)
This is a murder mystery roleplay. However, once the cast has been decided, one of the characters will be randomly chosen to be the murderer. The only people who will know the murdererโs identity will be their corresponding writer and @venusโit is up to the rest of the cast to find out who the killer is with the facts provided.
Speaking of facts providedโthe gmโs will periodically release items that will help move the mystery along (examples: mysterious keys, social media passwords, chance encounters with NPCs, etc.), and these items will be assigned to certain characters to interact with based on their history, strengths (or weaknesses), or affiliations. This will give each cast member a unique opportunity to directly advance the story and solve the mystery!
Our hope is to create a highly collaborative story where suspicions between characters remain high (until proven otherwise, of course). We appreciate you supporting this concept with your interest!

. | It shouldn't be a surprise that the most public figure in the altogether elusive Love Club is undergoing serious investigations. After all, they ultimately decide which events do and don't happen, double check guest lists, and ensure everyone's safety and wellbeing at said events. Was something done deliberately to harm the deceased, or was a blind eye purposefully turned?
THE BEST FRIEND. Status: Open. | The individual likely met with the most sympathy, the Best Friend was just as the role name implies - the deceased's closest friend and confidant, and their close relationship was well known by the entire school and club. It seemed that their bond was unbreakable, but their friendship wasn't as perfect as it seemed on the surface. Not to mention the fact that they were one of the last ones seen with the deceased before their untimely death.
THE MORTAL ENEMY. Status: claimed by

. | It was no secret that the Mortal Enemy and the deceased weren't on the best of terms. While a mutual respect existed between the two (at least, from what their friends and club members saw), the two considered each other competition academically and socially. Sure, they were both stars of the Love Club, but the animosity between the two ran deep, stemming from a complicated history.
THE EX LOVER. Status: Open. | What pain it must be to have a heart broken not once, but now twice. Having recently gone through a rather public and scandalous breakup, the Ex Lover is another individual in the Love Club now being scrutinized as a suspect. After all, the ex is always the one responsible for the crime in the court of public opinion.
THE ROOMMATE. Status: Open. | Roommates have the unique opportunity to see what someone is like behind closed doors, when supposedly no one is looing. The Roommate shared a dorm with the deceased for some amount of time, and consequently had more insight into who they were away from the pressures of the Love Club. Was this relationship as picture perfect as it seemed?
THE MENTEE. Status: Open. | One of the newest members of the club, the Mentee considered the deceased a mentor-like figure. The deceased took the Mentee under their wing, intending to share insider advice to managing the responsibilities of the Love Club and the academic demands of a place like Saint Val's. Could this relationship have had a dark, envious side?
THE REJECT. Status: Open. | Once a prominent member of the Love Club, the Reject has experienced social suicide after being removed from the club. What happened? Only club members know, though rumors have flown around for weeks following their removal and new status as an outcast. The only fact that is certain is that it involved a falling out with the deceased.
THE TEAMMATE. Status: Open. | While Saint Val's is known prominently for it's liberal arts programs, its lacrosse team is award winning and placed highly in national championships. It's one thing to be friends, but friendship forged through comradery and teamwork is something else entirely. The deceased was the star of the lacrosse team, and the Teammate had lived in his shadow for far too long.
THE SECRET ADMIRER. Status: Open. | In contrast to an existing relationship having happened between the deceased and the Ex Lover, there was never anything that happened between the deceased and the Secret Admirer. It wasn't until their tragic death that their love for Jordi was made public, thus pulling them into the suspect pool as well. However, most know that it was just that - an unrequited crush. Did their affections go any deeper than that?
THE SIBLING. Status: Open. | The pain of losing a brother is unparalleled; while the Sibling mourns, they too are being investigated as a suspect. There is no question that the deceased's fame and popularity cast a rather large shadow on their sibling, even if it wasn't intentional. Jealousy can ruin all relationships, even those of blood and family. Picture perfect on the outside, but what was their relationship truly like?

As you can already tell, the Love Club is a dark academia, college focused murder mystery plot, and we're hoping to make this as fun and engaging as we can to give y'all a vexing mystery to solve. 1. Follow all RP Nation site rules. Harassment or bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This roleplay is strictly 18+, and will explore themes of violence, drug usage, murder, and more. Trigger and content warnings will be used to ensure the wellbeing of those who need them.
2. Consider this a "lazy-lit" level roleplay; we expect engaging and creative writing, multi-paragraph replies with correct grammar and spelling, but length can vary from 300 to 500 words depending on the context of the scene. No one liners or effortless replies will be tolerated.
3. We expect all accepted members to post in character at least once a week. We will also be using the platform Discord to plot, discuss character relationships, and brainstorm together, with the goal of building a fun and uplifting creative community.
