Mason Ostergard
"Who's asking?"Name - Mason Emmanuel Ostergard
Nicknames - Em, M
Age - 21
Sexuality - Bisexual, with a slight preference for men. Not much experience with any gender, though.
Occupation - College student
Major - Undecided
"What are you looking at?"Hair color - gray/silver
Eye color - brown
Height - 6’2”
Build - athletic
Body mods - no tattoos. His left ear is pierced. He has some scars, but they’re usually covered by his clothes.
Description - Mason’s tall and broad-shouldered. His hair is dyed a silvery gray, although his eyebrows don't match -- they're dark brown. His eyes are an unremarkable shade of brown, but they're set deep in his face, and there's an intensity to them. His face has sharp angles, with high cheekbones and a square jaw. From certain angles he would be handsome, if he could get his attitude together. Mason’s whole image projects an air of “fuck off”. His posture is usually very stiff and closed-off.
Noticeable features - his unusual hair color, his hostile default facial expression.
"Look, whatever you heard, I'm sure it's not true."Power - dark energy. Mason doesn’t have a good name for it. He doesn’t like to think about it. When Mason channels dark energy -- or, more accurately, allows it to get out -- the energy flows out of him, creating a swirling, dark cloud. The swirls coalesce into something vaguely tentacle-like, tendrils of shadow that become corporeal or dissolve at Mason’s command. The energy makes a sinister whispering sound -- if you listen closely, you can hear voices speaking in an infernal language. When he channels it, darkness swirls around him, and his eyes turn red. It’s very sinister-looking.
Mason can control when he channels his dark energy, to an extent. When he's upset, angry, or threatened, it becomes much harder to keep from channeling it. The energy has a further negative affect on his psyche -- it wants to get out, wants to hurt. Mason gets a sense of sick satisfaction from using his power that terrifies him.
Abilities - energy tendrils. Please don’t call them tentacles, Mason hates that. This is the primary way that Mason uses his power. He can manifest and control up to ten individual tendrils. They have a max range of roughly thirty feet. They require energy to maintain and control, and the more tendrils he’s controlling, and the further they’re going, the harder it is. They have the strength of a normal human arm, although if he uses multiple at once that strength increases. Mason can dissolve or make them incorporeal at will. If the tendrils are hit or damaged, Mason doesn’t feel it, but if one is severed it causes him a sharp, internal pain.
Tough - Mason can ignore a lot of discomfort if he chooses to. He's not sensitive to fatigue or cold weather. When he sets his mind to something, he almost always sees it through.
Loyal - Mason's not in a position to put this trait to use very often, but he's very loyal to the people he likes. Family, close friends, and people he respects earn Mason's unwavering support. However, it takes Mason a long time to reach this stage with people. He doesn't like to get close to people.
Intelligent - he downplays it, but Mason's a smart person. He's perceptive and good at putting things together. He has a good memory. This does not at all translate into emotional intelligence.
Standoffish - Mason doesn't particularly care if he's rude, as long as people leave him alone. He's very worried about accidentally -- or intentionally -- hurting the people around him with his powers, so he does his best to make sure that no one wants to get close to him.
Guarded - Mason doesn't trust easily, and he keeps his thoughts and feelings to himself. He doesn't want to seem like he doesn't know what he's doing, but he has no idea what he's doing, and his solution to that conundrum is to not tell anybody anything.
Dramatic - Mason gets very wrapped up in his power and his problems, probably more than he needs to. He has a tendency to take things, and himself, too seriously.
Likes - movies, the rain, being alone, arcades, soup and hot drinks
Dislikes - his powers, being surprised, hot weather, crowds, tomatoes
Trivia:
Mason’s kind of a movie buff. Whether it’s the old classics or modern cinema, he’s into it. It’s a hobby he can pursue solo, so he spends a fair amount of time watching films on his own.
He does not know how to swim.
He secretly really wants a pet of some kind.
"This part's not interesting."Mason grew up in a single parent household. His father left when he was 4, leaving his mother to raise Mason and his sister alone. Mason's sister, Elsbeth, is four years older than he is. She did a lot of work caring for Mason, since their mother was busy working. The siblings are very close. Elsbeth is quick to call Mason out on his dramatics, and she's one of the few people who can get away with it.
Mason played basketball through high school. He was pretty good -- his school made it to the regional championship. Unfortunately his power manifests when Mason gets angry or worked up, and in a competitive sport like basketball that power was brought out on the court more than once. He had to quit the team before the championships. They lost, and Mason hasn’t played since.
