Name: Nicias of Crete
Age: 50
Gender: Male
Height: 165cm
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Country of origin: Crete
Bio/personality:
Among the aristocratic families of Rome, owning exotic slaves are a common way of demonstrating culture and wealth. Exotic dancing girls from the far East, hulking Germanic manservants, and learned Greeks all are in high demand.
Nicias of Crete was one such slave. Sentenced to die in the arena after a short stint as a bandit in his native land, Nicias proved a capable fighter and survived long enough to be bought by a talent scout for a leading gladiator school in Rome. Though an injury ruled him out of further fighting a year later, he was able to avoid being sold off by demonstrating his abilities with medicine. In 55 AD, having served as the school medicus for over a decade, he was bought by a wealthy Roman to serve as a mentor for his son. As fate would have it, that man was Septimus Licinius Crassus, the doomed leader of Legio I Misenum, and the boy he was to mentor was his son Titus. In the absence of his father, Nicias taught Titus the masculine arts, how to fight and ride, to read and write both Greek and Latin, and his place in the world. In return for his service, and in recognition of their strong bond, Titus used his power as the man of the house to free Nicias. Just a few short years before the Empire descended into civil war, Nicias of Crete arranged to travel to Bomarzium to start the next chapter of his life.
Though his old injury can sometimes slow him down, Nicias remains a skilled fighter. As a bandit in Crete, he mastered the sling and the bow at a young age, and later in the arena he trained to fight as a hoplomachus, armed in the manner of a Hellenic warrior. He visits the arena in Bomarzium to bet on the fights and tend to the injuries of the gladiators, though he often wonders what it would be like to step back into the ring one last time…
