Fantasy The Flux: Project Reboot

The Flux Characters
So the title kinda says it all. This is a reboot of an idea that I had from last year according to my post history. I tried to do too much by myself and then life swept me from under my feet and so I had to drop the project entirely. I've been feeling guilty leaving so many players hanging like that without notice. So this is my sort of redemption and apology. Anyways enough of my self-pity here's the concept:

Flux. A powerful, mystical energy that flows throughout all living beings. Flux has been called many things in the past. Mana, Chi, Nen, Quintessence. People who possessed incredible abilities were said to manipulate and harness these mystical forces through years of training and study. A man who stands before a pile of broken spears after being stabbed by them. A wizard who entangles their foes in vines as if they were an extension of his being. An archer who manages to hit a target far beyond that of normal human's perception. These all have one thing in common. In all these stories Flux was present. The monk fortified his body, the wizard created vines to trap his foes, the archer enhanced their vision. All of these things were done with Flux.

Through countless years of study and experimentation we've been able to harness the Flux within our bodies. Though the method to do so may seem mundane by our modern standards, it is necessary in order to ensure Flux is used safely by those with the aptitude to do so. That is why we've established a specialized training facility, Gaea Academy, designed to foster the growth of such individuals. Of course one asks how do we regulate such talented individuals. Well we make them compete in a global sports phenomenon known as Flux Wars.

Flux Wars is the annual world event that the Gaea Foundation created as a way of promoting the study of Flux and also allow the showcasing of individuals who can manipulate flux. Flux Wars pits rival teams in war game scenarios with the objective of the last team standing wins. The matches that lead up to the Flux Wars are called Missions to keep with the theme. Teams are comprised of 4 members, usually one of each of the four classifications: Striker, Interceptor, Weaver, and Support. Teams are decided both by the students and by the faculty. Teams will change frequently leading up to the Flux Wars so any 4-man team that sticks together for longer than 8 missions is considered a force to be reckoned with.

This is Gaea Academy. Here at the academy our goal is the same as any of the other academies: To educate the students about Flux and to train them to use Flux to participate in the Flux Wars. All students go through a rather simple entrance exam. They appear in front of an examiner and place their hands on a device known as a Flux Orb. If they possess the potential to manipulate Flux then the Flux Orb will change shape based on the person's inherent aptitude. This aptitude is what determines which of the four Classes they fall under and generally what class is a best fit for the student.

You have already taken the entrance exam and have been sorted into your class. Now you are taking your first steps into the academy. It is here at Gaea Academy where you will live, study, and train in the ways of the Flux. You will have many instructors which you will meet in time. For now you make your way to the field where all the new students are assembling.

The Flux is a fantasy roleplay with a touch of sci-fi. We have all the modern technology we do now, but we also have things like holo-decks and wrist-mounted communication devices have replaced the cellphone are also part of the setting. I'm going for a school setting with a focus on combat sports. So the roleplay will be split between the time in school: Classes, training, socializing, etc. and then the combat sport called Flux Wars in which students will take part in "Missions" which are the term used for matches in the world to keep with the war games theme.

I will be playing mainly the Dean of the Academy as well as maybe 1 or 2 teachers. My goal for this roleplay is to get a decent amount of teachers (which I seriously lacked last time around. At least 3 or 4) and students to participate in the Flux Wars. My hope is that should something come up and I'm unable to post anything that the teachers and the group can continue to keep the fun going till I can announce a mission.

Below is a very basic rundown of each of the 4 aptitudes. These are absolutely inspired by RPG classes and teams are comprised of 4 students, generally 1 of each of the aptitudes.
Striker
Strikers are the damage dealers of a team. They can manipulate the flux to enhance their bodies to boost their strength or speed. Strikers can also generate focused beams and blasts of flux to attack their foes at range. Striker specialists can eventually manipulate flux to create weapons that help better focus their power. Strikers suffer from exhausting their flux quickly due to their constant output and may end up burning out before the mission is completed.

Weaver
Weavers are masters of the battlefield. Manipulating flux into various forms that help lock down targets and create openings for their strikers. A weavers job is to manipulate the battlefield to their team's advantage and is generally considered the brain of a team. Weaver specialists can eventually weave flux to act as traps, leaving a trace of their flux behind before it springs out at an enemy. Weavers skills tend to take a considerable amount of time to initiate and thus a weaver is easy prey if left undefended.

Interceptor
Interceptors, much like strikers, can manipulate the flux to enhance their bodies. But instead of boosting their attacking power they focus solely on defense, hardening their bodies to be able to shrug off all opposition. Interceptors are also able to generate flux barriers that help defend a wide area in front of them. Specialists can eventually manipulate the shape of their barriers or even generate an armor of flux. Interceptors must choose to either project a flux barrier or enhance their body as the situation demands it since it takes their focus to do one or the other.

Healer
Healers manipulate the flux to provide medical support for their team. They have the unique ability to infuse their flux into others to replenish their flux, provide healing to the wounded, or share their flux to further augment the strengths of their allies. It is said that those who have an aptitude for the healer role have a large capacity of flux at their disposable. Healer specialists can eventually link with their teammates to provide constant flux infusion. Though healers have the largest capacity of flux, they suffer from having to be within close proximity of their patients in order to provide flux infusion.

Interested. What are the post requirements and how often will players be expected to post?
Honestly given how close the holidays are right now I don't expect people to be posting too often till after New Years. I rarely post as is, so I figured depending on how much traction this gets I'd say maybe at least once every 2 weeks is the expected frequency I'm aiming for. Life get's tricky and all. As far as post requirements are concerned I think a paragraph or two seems reasonable with leniency given the context of a situation.

-raises hand- Interested!
Will there be a Discord OOC and will drawn FCs be accepted?
Drawn characters are fine. We had a guy use an OC and she was tops. A real spitfire she was. As far as an OOC for Discord I'm not too savvy with Discord and mainly use it for its basic functions of chatting with friends while we game. If I had someone help me create and manage it though I see no problem with creating one again.

Interested, though I’ll definitely be a bit rusty. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down for a good role play.

Rubs hands.

Alright, you caught my attention the moment you said 'Flux' and 'Magic' in the same RP.
Also weaver, but the interest in that is unrelated, really.

Anyways. Interested.

Flux sounds super duper vaguely familiar, the kind of familiar like a name just on the tip of your tongue. Did you ever run it on another board?

Unless I've got an incredibly awesome alter ego that I'm unaware of or a doppelganger than this is the only site I've run this idea. Flux is a common term though. Well common enough anyways. I just thought it would be a fun word to use other than the typical magic, mana, chi, etc.

Flux is an awesome term, however.

It also makes for good techno-magibabble.

The flux capacitator has overloaded, leading to an outbreak of Warp infection. We need all strike teams to secure the Mystic Rift-tethered engine.

Is there an OOC for this roleplay? I have some ideas for a character floating around in my head and it would be nice to discuss it with others.

Yeah I'll build one now that I feel like there's enough people interested in this project. I'll have a link set up in the first post.

Alright OOC and Character threads are up. Feel free to ask questions in the OOC and check characters by me while I set up the main thread.
