Please note that dates may be a little off. The Odyssey class starship only recently became canon as the Enterprise F commissioned in 2409. The fansite has a production start date of 2391. I am going to split the difference and go with 2400 for the first Odyssey class. The Athena-A was a Sovereign class prototype built in 2385 referred to as the Sojourner class.

NOTE: Please ignore any references to specific characters in the links. They are to Starbase 118, a fansite. But they have the best deck plans and specs I have found anywhere.

Take a look at Core Curriculum for an idea of the knowledge EVERY officer in Starfleet should have. Bear in mind that this doesn't apply to Enlisted personnel.

RANKS

Note: The highest rank assigned to the ship is Captain.
All Main Characters should be Officers.

Enlisted
Enlisted personnel generally attend Basic Training, a technical school for their job specialty, and Starship Orientation. This is NOT the Academy. This whole series generally lasts no more than a year. A few programs may last a little longer.

Crewman Recruit (CR) - Boot Camp
Crewman Apprentice (CA) - OJT Period (up to 30 day, may be skipped based on experience)
Crewman (CMN)
Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO3)
Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2)
Petty Officer 1st Class (PO10
Chief Petty Officer (CPO)
Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO)
Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO)

Cadet ranks
Cadet ranks were held by those attending Starfleet Academy during their training to become commissioned officers. Minimum age to apply to the academy is 16. The selection criteria is variable - extremely tough for humans. Some allowances are made for newer Federation member worlds. Members of non Federation worlds require a sponsor. (Example would be Nog, a Ferengi, sponsored by Sisco. Imagine the universe in which Nog made it in on the first try and Wesley Crusher did not.)

Cadet 1st class
Cadets of this rank were fourth-year students at Starfleet Academy. After graduation, these cadets were granted the rank of ensign.
Cadet 2nd class
Cadets of this rank were third-year students at Starfleet Academy.
Cadet 3rd class
Cadets of this rank were second-year students at Starfleet Academy.
Cadet 4th class
Cadets of this rank were first-year students at Starfleet Academy.

Officers
All officers must graduate from Starfleet Academy, typically a 4 year program.

Ensign (ENS)
The most junior officer rank. It was the rank bestowed on newly-commissioned officers when they graduated from Starfleet Academy. Ensigns who had distinguished themselves in their academy class or on duty could be posted as a senior bridge officer. A typical officer spent approximately three years at the rank of ensign.

Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG)
The officer rank immediately above ensign, and below lieutenant. It was also the rank bestowed on medical doctors and counselors (but not nurses) upon completion of their studies and training at Starfleet Medical Academy or elsewhere.

Lieutenant (Lt)
The officer rank immediately above lieutenant junior grade, and below lieutenant commander. Some advanced Starfleet training programs, such as Advanced Tactical Training, commissioned their graduates at this rank.

Lieutenant Commander (LTCD)
The officer rank immediately above lieutenant, and below commander. Officers with this rank could serve as the executive officer of smaller vessels. In some cases, a lieutenant commander could also serve as the commanding officer of a smaller vessel, such as the USS Defiant.

Commander (CDR)
The officer rank immediately above lieutenant commander, and below captain. Typical assignments at this rank included executive officer of larger vessels, space station commander. The rank of commander was also available to chief medical officers and ship counselors who passed the Bridge Officer's Test.

Captain (Capt)
The most senior regular officer rank below flag officer, it was most often held by starship and starbase commanders. Captains could also serve as administrative adjutants beneath admirals. In rare circumstances, officers with the rank of captain held other positions aboard a starship, such as "Captain of Engineering" Montgomery Scott aboard the USS Excelsior, and later Scott and Spock aboard the Enterprise-A. Phillipa Louvois held the rank of captain while working as a prosecutor under the office of the Judge Advocate General at Starbase 173.

Fleet Captain
Fleet captain was a title bestowed on senior Starfleet captains. It was a rare distinction, held by particularly distinguished captains. The title of fleet captain was held by former Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike in the year 2266. (Not even Kirk achieved this title. Most skip this rank.)

Flag Officers
Admirals in Starfleet were described as the flag officers, a term held over from naval tradition. These ranks constituted the highest authorities of Starfleet Command. These officers are never assigned to a starship permanently, but may post to one for a specific mission or use a starship as a taxi.

Commodore (CDRE)

Rear Admiral (RADM)

Vice Admiral (VADM)

Admiral (Adm)

Fleet Admiral (FADM)

Positions

Ship's Captain - The ships commanding officer

Executive Officer - The executive officer is the billet of the officer who is second-in-command. An XO is responsible to the captain for all ship's work, drills, exercises, personnel organization, and the policing and inspection of the ship. When the ship goes to action stations, the XO confirms that the ship actually is ready for combat and reports this to the captain. (Note: In the US Navy, the XO's own action station is in a separate part of the ship from that of the Captain, so that a single hit will not likely incapacitate both officers.) The Captain may lay out a game plan, so to speak, and give an order to the Exec to carry it out, and then the Exec gives all the detailed orders to the crew to make it happen. The Exec does crew evaluations with the ship's counselor, and the job really seems to be a way to allow a promising officer to understudy with a seasoned captain pending becoming a captain themselves. Ships in the TOS era were smaller and typically needed to combine this with a secondary role. This role is also known as First Officer or Number One.

Operations (Ops) - Resource management, including human resources. This included the Science department, and if there is still a Chief Science Officer, he/she/it no longer has a station on the bridge, but apparently relays information to the Ops officer, like many other departments do. (When Data's hands were moving across the controls on his station, he may have been rerouting power from phasers to shields while directing the Science department to focus sensors on specific points of interest in the area - such as an enemy vessel - while also filling out a requisition order to Starfleet for more Cardassian hair gel in response to a message from Mr. Mott, while ALSO sending a request to Chief O'Brien to have someone from his team look at a malfunctioning 'fresher in Crewman Hall's quarters.) May also double as Second Officer.

Flight Controller (Conn) - The flight control officer, also known as conn officer, or simply conn/helm has the duty of piloting the vessel. This position combines the roles of the navigator and helmsman used previously. The FCO must be knowledgeable in atmospheric craft, subspace field geometry, complex mathematics, space sciences, astrogation, system operation of the flight console, and systems repairs at the level of a technician. The term "conn" is also used to refer to the flight control station itself.

Counselor - The counselor is responsible for the mental well-being of the crew and civilian staff. The position is considered vital enough that it warrants inclusion in the senior staff. The Counselor also has a diplomatic role, advising the Captain in first contacts and other situations. As with the chief medical officer, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crewmembers of duty if he or she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively, including the Captain. At the Captain's discretion, the Counselor may be allowed to wear something other than their normal Starfleet uniform.

Now for two positions that are most misunderstood. Tactical Officer and Security Chief. Here is why: Security chiefs frequently double as tactical officers on smaller ships, though the two roles were not required to be filled by the same person. On a large ship or starbase the roles are separated.

Tactical Officer - The tactical officer is stationed at the tactical station. The tactical officer's job is to maintain weapon and shield readiness along with executing firing solutions. These solutions could range from a low intensity phaser beam or to plot a torpedo firing pattern.

Security Chief - Also known as chief of security, the Security Chief is in charge of security aboard a starship or starbase and reports to the chief tactical officer. The security chief is responsible for initiating shipboard security alerts and conducting personnel reviews.

Abduction of Bangs to Kimera
Bangs, TX, population 872. It is the wake of the US Civil War. Now Bangs wasn’t some boom town. It was just one of those small towns that was built along the railroad with a pit stop for mail delivery and the occasional passenger.

In the Autumn of 1872 in the wee hours of the morning (0238 hrs), Bangs, TX experienced something the town had never felt before - an earthquake. It was hardly a major quake, but enough to rouse the populace and scare some of them into thinking the world had come to an end. The train making a layover for repairs was unharmed. Telegraph lines were suddenly cut off. A number of windows cracked or broke. (The big mirror at the saloon survived unharmed - practically a miracle. (It had been broken so many times that the owner had 8 replacements close by - also unharmed.) A number of shelves in stores toppled over. Horses panicked. Dogs barked. Some of the livestock at the stockade that had been driven into town for sale broke the fencing and stampeded. The once clear night sky was suddenly cloudy and rain began to pour.

The town of Bangs soon discovered they weren't in Texas anymore, but in a strange land. At precisely 5 miles from the center of town (as measured from the telegraph post) the land suddenly changed into a jungle. Most folk had a tough time grasping the idea of being in an alien world. But that is precisely what had happened. A circle of the Earth some 10 miles across had literally been ice cream scooped out and transplanted onto a new planet. And the town soon learned that they were not alone.

The new world, Kimera, was Earth-like, but primitive, with giant insects, rodents and even reptiles - though nothing Jurassic like a T-Rex. The local climate was much like Equatorial Africa. Some of the plants were quite carnivorous, though very few got large enough to eat a dog or small child. Perhaps the worst predators were a species similar to small raptors about 4 feet tall fully grown. Kimera soon proved to be home to several sapient species, each brought to Kimera in a similar fashion over many years.

Kimera was an experimental zoo created by a species similar in advancement to the Lactrans. They had wanted to see how various species would interact, but they found that their zoo was dying off as the various species fought. All they could think to do was try adding more specimens - or destroy the experiment and start over. They foresaw that these species would destroy their galaxy if they couldn’t interact safely.

Kasey and a few of her friends managed to forge a peace among the various species. She became known as the Great Healer. Her closest friend became the Peacemaker (which was funny as Josey Smith carried a pair of Colt Peacemakers).

Kimera as a Federation Protectorate
Kimera finally achieved a fully integrated government in 2172. They achieved early spaceflight in 2269. They have been a Federation Protectorate since 2273. And in 2370 they made their first warp test run. Most of their research has been in planetology and xenoxoology. They live in harmony with their planet. The races are not fully integrated, but they have the freedom to access all of the benefits of their world. Some merely choose to eschew technology. This subject is reviewed annually and individuals may not be forbidden from leaving.

It was Kasey Jones herself who sent the first message to Earth. She became the first Kimeran ambassador to the Federation in 2272.

Kimera is home to several races, the most predominant being Ankhyri, Kree, and Onaran, as well as the LGM (Greys).
