Personality: Most, who don’t know him, consider him a quiet boy. One the Marauders have taken pity on (or used as a test subject.) Peter takes this and gleefully uses it to keep out of trouble. Pettigrew is too poor a wizard to manage that spell. It couldn’t have been him. He loves hoarding this fact over the often-assumed culprits of Remus, James, and Sirius. He doesn’t work well under pressure, like in a classroom, but get him with his friends and he’ll shine. Out in public, he’s happy to let his friends shine while he watches in the background insuring that the escape routes are open.
He’s a normal kid, not ready for the pressures of the real world. There’s no one he trusts more than his friends. He’s protective of them, always willing to use his skills to get back at those who wrong them. He tends to be more cautious than most Gryffindors, but maintains someone needs to be. He’s cunning and sly, but he only uses it for good reasons, like pranking Slytherins
Peter does have a bit of a cruel streak, but he's amongst company. He enjoys humiliating those he sees wronged him or his friends. It might not be immediate revenge, but he makes sure to take every opportunity. It's not something he'll forgive easily.
Unless it's his friends, who he's sure he'll forgive anything. He'll laugh at their misfortune as much as they do his, though he will deign to heal them. He just wishes the others would worry about what happens after not just if the prank goes well.

Beginnings
Born to Bram and Enid Pettigrew, Peter grew up in a fairly normal middle-class family. His father, a mediwizard at St. Mungo’s is a stern man with little time for his family. His mother, in turn, presses all of her focus and love onto him. She's a good mother, just overbearing and with high hopes for him to move up in society.
His mother, while no supporter of He-who-must-not-be-named, was a pureblood proud of her heritage. She’d spend time at social functions and tea parties of other elites, and soon realized it was best not to bring Peter. For all the magic she’d seen him do at home, he could never show off to her friends. Instead, he was taken by his father to St. Mungo’s and left to wander while his father completed his shift.
He was lucky to meet a friend, Dorcas Meadowes, shortly after to join in adventures and exploration of the hospital. The two of them bonded over reading, at first anything, but soon they searched for healing texts in their parents’ libraries to share.
The two stayed together throughout their childhood and even Hogwarts didn’t break their friendship. It did make room for others though. Peter found himself rooming with three other boys, strangers. He was shy at first, overwhelmed by the bond Sirius and James immediately had. It was only when he pranked James back that their friendship grew.
Peter was initially terrified of Remus’s furry little problem but recognized the logic of his safety the rest of the month. When the suggestion of animagi was discussed he jumped on the idea, even if Transfiguration was one of his worst subjects. Thankfully it was James’ best, and they managed. Becoming a rat was a surprise. But he eventually found that it was perfect for him. Now he uses the form all the time; he's probably a rat 30% of the time. He’s explored more of Hogwarts than any of the others, due to his small size. And he can get inside information by sneaking into meetings.
Most of the teachers have given up on him. Poor Peter, they say, well within hearing. Only Poppy Pomfrey gives him any notice. She’s realized his inability to act when attention is on him, freezing like a scared mouse, and therefore she pays most of her focus on Dorcas and approves his work afterward. He adores her.

His mother, Eileen Prince lowered herself to marry a muggle, Tobias Snape. She was an heiress to a pureblood family known for potions, while he was an industrial worker from Cokeworth. If there were happy times, Severus wasn’t there for them. Factory work was intermittent, more off than on for the alcoholic. He forbade magic in his house, but if it wasn’t for Eileen’s transfiguration skills, there wouldn’t be money for food. She did sell “herbal remedies” to the local wives, to make some money of her own. She felt using the fake money too much would cause problems.
Severus was never what his father wanted. He cared naught for football, instead finding solace in ‘pansy’ things like reading or magic. His slender build (more from his lack of meals than genetics) wasn’t able to take on the brute strength factory work had given his father, but he’d learned early on how to take hits, and how to pull his attention from his mother.
His mother was his whole world when he was younger. She taught him magic, the secrets of potions that all Princes knew, and kept him safe from his father’s rage. At least until Severus was no longer able to just hide. He learned the ways of survival early on, guaranteeing his spot in Slytherin like his mother before him.
He was 9 when his world gained color. He remembered watching her for days. This fellow witch, her magic immediately obvious. Her useless sister spotted him one day when he drew too close to the warmth she let out. But it was for the best. Suddenly he was in her life. Lily was taking him on adventures throughout the neighborhoods. While he told her about the magical world she’d soon enter.
They became best friends. Friends that lasted through the split into rival houses. Friends that lasted through the muggleborn/pureblood divide. Friends that he ruined. Fifth year. His worst year. When everything went wrong. Like a fool, he’d rushed after Black’s hint, thinking himself clever for figuring it out. He’d gone and nearly died for it. And no one cared. Even Lily couldn’t because Dumbledore made him swear to silence. And nothing happened to those Marauders. Those monsters.
He’d been so angry. Thankfully Lucius had been there to direct that anger into curses and potions. He would have exploded if he hadn’t had that outlet. But still, he’d spent so much time around them. So pleased to finally be accepted by the purebloods that when he was being humiliated in front of Lily he’d lashed out at her. With that word. One word. And years of friendship, best friends, was over.
He’d begged and pleaded, uncaring that he was humiliating himself to forgive him, but she refused. She must have been wanting to leave him for ages but was too much of a coward to just do it. That summer she’d ignored him, leaving him at the mercy of his father until Lucius invited him to his manor. The Death Eaters appreciated his skills. They learned that despite his dirty blood he was worthy. He hadn’t bothered returning home instead returning to Lucius’s manor, where he could work with almost unlimited supplies.
But no matter how hard he pretends, he still loves Lily as a sister. He's trying to cut that part out of himself. He's learning occlumency quickly and plans to use it to close that part of himself off.
