Fandom So Ya Want to be a Master?

Cynthia tentatively reaches for the treat but is even more alarmed by the sudden rush of company than by her own clumsiness, and quickly takes refuge between Charlie.

"Wonderful! Simply fantastic -- and look at how excited everyone is. I can see this will be a bout to remember! Let me know if I can assist, because I must say I AM eager to observe the festivities."

Noticing her Vaporeon, she sighs. "No need to worry about these young trainers-in-training, Cynthia. If anything, they'd probably love to meet you. Won't you come out?"

Cynthia doesn't budge, although she does peer at the crowd with slight curiosity.

"Alright, alright everybody off. I'm happy to be back too and glad to be seeing all your smiling faces. You've all grown a bit since the last time I saw all of you," he stated with a smile, looking around at all of them.

Remembering he had company he turned with a smile to Charlie.

"Everyone this is Charlie. This is her first time to the village so everyone be nice to her and make sure she feels welcome. And of course let's all do our best to make sure we give her a good show when it comes time for the tournament, right?"

They all screamed affirmatives with glee until they saw Cynthia.

"A Vaporeon!" one of them shouted excitedly, pointing at Cynthia who was still hiding behind Charlie.

"I got an Eevee of my own!" another one shouted. "I wanna be an Eevee trainer someday!"

In an attempt to calm them down so that Cynthia wouldn't be as startled or frightened he gestured with his hands for them all to sit.

"Guys. What have I told you all before about meeting new pokemon?"

The kids sat down on the ground and raised their hands at his question. Picking one the child stood up and spoke calmly.

"To approach carefully and always ask the trainer first for permission?"

"That's very good," Kyle confirmed. "But even if you get permission the pokemon might not feel comfortable enough around other people to want to be petted or played with by a stranger."

"You clearly give this a lot of thought. Hello everyone. Cynthia hear would probably love to meet you, but you need to be gentle. She's still new to people who treat her kindly, so if she doesn't seem super friendly it's not because she dislikes you - she just prefers to get to know people."

Cynthia sniffs the air, then slinks out from behind her trainer to one of the children and starts pawing the ground.

"Are you the Eevee trainer? I think Cynthia thinks you have one! Is she right?"

Charlie offers an appreciative look to Kyle as she awaits the child's response. Cynthia, meanwhile, keeps pawing expectantly.

"Go ahead and let Cynthia meet your Eevee big guy. Just don't bring it out right next to her let there be a little space between them to see if she wants to get any closer," Kyle instructed.

He had learned a many things over his few years as a trainer between his journies and the events here at home whenever he did take the time to return and visit.

The child did as he was told and called out his Eevee. It was an adorable little fluffy thing and it sniffed curiously at the air as it looked across the space towards Cynthia.

"Now everyone just be patient and we'll watch to see if they like each other. Patience and understanding is key when it comes to befriending pokemon."

Cynthia regards the newly released Normal-type for a moment, then takes a step closer. For a moment she pauses and turns to look at Charlie.

"Go right ahead, C. Make a friend!"

Cynthia seems to relax a bit at her trainer's voice. So much so, in fact, that she gets right up next to the other trainer's Eevee and wraps her tail around it!

"Why is it always either no hugs or only hugs for you? Well, kiddo, it looks like my little buddy likes yours quite a bit. She probably remembers being one herself - Vaporeon tend to be pretty protective by nature."

The little boy's Eevee tenses for a moment at the sudden change in proximity to Cynthia, crying out it's name once before relaxing in Cynthia's tail once it realizes that it's not being flailed about or anything. As soon as it opens its eyes and sees the Vaporeon hugging it closely the small creature smiles and happily cries its name out loud as if to say hello to you too.

Kyle watches on, noticeably relaxing a bit once he finds out how untimid Cynthia actually is and how well Charlie is dealing with all of the attention as well. He had been nervous that so much energy and attention all at once would be overwhelming for both of his guests. He approaches Charlie and whispers in her ear.

"Would you be willing to keep them distracted for a bit while I see to how the preparations for the tournament are coming along? You seem to be great with kids after all."

"Not a problem. Do what you gotta do! Cynthia and I practiced a few tricks for contests a while ago to help her get more used to people. We won't have a problem keeping them busy!"

She turns to the two snuggled Pokemon and smiles. "Alright, Cynthia, let's give them a show!"

To several cheers she tosses a hoop in the air. "C'mon, Cynthia! Give us an Aqua Ring!

Cynthia's quicker than she looks. With a sideways somersault she launches a round blast of water, catching the ring in a sort of slow moving bubble, much to everyone's delight.

"Great work! Now Swift!"

The star-shaped rays cut the ring with pinpoint accuracy, but avoid the hoop itself, meaning it falls harmlessly back into Charlie's hands. "Alright, girl. Well done. Now let's show them something else!"

The two continue to perform for their captive audience while waiting for Kyle to return.

Kyle smiled as he snuck away to check on the set-up crews. The make-shift arena was coming together nicely as he looked around. He gave a few insights about where to put things but other than that the village people seemed to have everything handled. Even some of the older kids had returned to the village to help with it and to compete.

Still with a grin on his face he returned back to the small group of kids that were watching Charlie and Cynthia intently as they were doing tricks to keep them entertained. He waited until Cynthia finished one before speaking to interrupt.

"Well the preparations are coming along great. Is everyone ready for their lesson?"

The kids all shouted with glee, still seated on the ground.

"Alright. Now who can tell me some things to keep in mind when getting involved in a battle?"

One of the kids piped up "the setting, the weather, and the number of enemies?"

"All very good answers but did anyone think of keeping in mind the type of pokemon that the other trainer brings out? Type advantages can be the deciding factor whether or not you win a battle. For example, can anyone tell me what types of pokemon have an advantage over electric and flying pokemon but are weak to water and grass types?"

Charlie smiles as she listens. Cynthia stops and goes back to her placid pose and expression, but a slight purring indicates she's in a very good mood from all the accolades she received.

"Oh, good one. Some folks don't learn that unless they're in school. Do you have a Pokemon academy here?" she keeps her voice low, not wanting to distract the kids from answering Kyle. A glint in her eyes indicates she wouldn't mind answering herself, but she knows better than to show off that much.

Smiling back at her Kyle nods from side to side.

"Small town. No academy. Hence why they love it when I come home. Teach them something new almost every time after I learn it the hard way," he whispers back to her.

The kids all start shouting out pokemon types at random. He holds up his palm to them as soon as he hears the correct answer, signifying they can stop.

"Who said rock and ground?" he called out to the class.

A little girl raised her hand from the middle of the group.

"Good job. You got it right! Due to their hard and tough nature rock and ground types have an advantage over flying types and completely nullify electric type attacks. That means that electric attacks do absolutely no damage to them at all. But if you think about nature what shapes the rocks we see around us? Even the really large ones? Water is the answer. Sure it takes time in nature but if a rock or ground type gets hit with a water or grass type attack it will be super effective and do a lot of damage. Can anyone else give me another example of a type advantage?"

"I'll add this, if Kyle doesn't mind. Can you tell me a Pokemon that is super-effective against psychic types, but is also weak to them? I have a prize for anyone who can."

Cynthia has gone back to the Eevee from earlier and is having some kind of quiet conversation with it of her own.

"She really is friendly, given enough time. Kind of like some people I know."

The kids simply hmmmed and huhed at his question so when Charlie gave them an alternate question they were eager to jump on it. Finally one yelled "Ghost types" anxiously hoping it was the correct answer.

Kyle smiled expectantly and the kids stared at her as well waiting to see if their friend was correct. He kept his eyes darting back to Cynthia and Eevee has they had their cute conversation back and forth.

"Oh, so close, but I was actually looking for a specific example like Gastly. Many ghost types can be weak against psychic types, but that's because they are also poison types! I still think your effort warrants a little something though!"

She reaches into her bag and pulls out an absorb bulb, then hands it to the guesser.

"Well then, what's next, Kyle?"

Kyle turned to the kids.

"Remember all you've learned today guys. Always keep in mind pokemon types when entering a battle and study the type advantages so that you can always have a slight edge when you can get one. Class dismissed for today."

With that he shooed them away and they all ran to their parents to share what they had learned. By this time the set up was nearly done and they were almost ready to get things underway. Kyle turned to Charlie with a smile.

"There's a small restaurant here in town. Would you like to get some lunch before the festivities begin?"

"I'm not opposed, but didn't we just eat? Besides, it looks like there's things to see here before the whole ceremony gets started. If you're hungry I'll be happy to accompany you, but otherwise I'm perfectly content to look around."

Cynthia watches the crowd disperse, then lets out a big yawn and glances at the humans.

"You want a break, Cynthia? Back inside, then." With a flash of light, the Vaporeon returns to her Poke Ball.

"I didn't mean right this moment silly," he replies as he approaches her with a smile. "It looks like we'll be ready to get started right around noon."

He offers her his arm.

"Would you like a locally-sourced tour guide to accompany you milady? Show you all of the sights? Besides the restaurant as well of course for later."

He pointed at everything around them.

"An entire world filled with pokemon and adventure awaits."

She laughs. "Alright, sure. I'd love to see the town. Following your lead, captain! Perhaps we'll encounter something unique!"

With a glance at her bag, she pulls out a Town Map partially covered in red marks. "And...there," she says, checking a spot on the map. "One more place I'll be seeing today. After you!"

He chuckled at her enthusiasm as he led her about the small town, pointing to each building that wasn't a family's home and describing what each one was. He arranged it so that the last thing that they would be stopping to see would be the makeshift arena for the competition.

"And this is what the townspeople have been working so hard on all morning and a little bit last night probably. This is where the competition will be held in about an hour."

Stopping he looked over towards her.

"What do you say young lady? You walk around enough to work up an appetite?"

"It's very nice. As for food, I suppose now I could go for a bite! What's good to eat around here that isn't at your inn?"

She smiles at his polite antics and checks her watch. "I'll set a timer!"

"There's a small restaurant owned by a local couple not far that has delicious, home cooked food and pastries. I always make sure to stop in whenever I make it back home and before I go to leave again."

He pointed in the direction of the small restaurant as he spoke to show her which direction they would be going.

"Sound good to you madam?"

"Sounds fantastic, but why all the honorifics? Or is this something you do for all your guests?"

She laughs at her companion good-naturedly. "Let's get some food."

"I'm simply using all of my training in hospitality to ensure that you have the best time possible," he responded, giving her a wink. "Of course it helps my inspiration that my company is so cute."

He escorts her to the restaurant, holding the door open for her.

"Ha. Right. Well then, thank you much. Do we wait for someone to seat us, or do we simply find our own seat?

"You're very welcome Charlie," he replied as he pulled out the seat for her to sit down at a table, gently pushing her in closer to the table once she sat down. "Feel free to order whatever you like."

He picked up two menus that were standing up in the stand on the one end of the table, handing her one and keeping one for himself. He looked over it a bit while attempting to figure out what he wanted to pick to eat. After only a few moments of reading however the elderly lady approached the table with a pen and notepad handy, asking them what they'd like to drink. Kyle ordered an orange soda and looked to Charlie to await her answer as to what she would like.

"Like I said, pick whatever you want. I always splurge on eating here when I come home. Then I miss the cooking here for the entirety of the trip." he announced with a chuckle.

"Well thank you kindly!" Charlie looks over the menu. "There's some good looking stuff here. A strawberry shake would be wonderful, if you please. Thanks kindly!"

She places her Poke Ball on the table. "Do you, perchance, have anything a Vaporeon would like?"

While she waits, she turns to Kyle. "You know, since we're traveling together, I might need to memorize your menu preferences."
