Cain Hawkins
-The Scarecrow-

cain_hawkins-png.484936

Cain was stirred from his task as a howl echoed through the walls of the building he found himself in, the suddenness of it all causing him to drop his radio to the floor just as Lacily's voice came through; questioning whether or not they had heard the sound as well. In swift response, Si-Woo had issued the order to fall back to the meeting point, an order that Cain had no qualms with as he hastily made his way out of the door, a few articles of clothing tucked away under one of his arms as he began to increase his pace down the road.

He didn't quite fancy being caught out alone in this underground cavern; isolated from the rest of the agents and a potential easy target for whatever or whomever it was that had summoned such an ominous howl. Thankfully however, it wasn't that long before he found himself near the rendezvous point, the sight of several other agents gathering there causing him to relax somewhat; there was after all strength in numbers and more was always better than 1.

At Si-woo's command, Cain had dropped what he had gathered and turned to face the cavern once more, his eyes scanning the sights before him as he tried to identify the source of the noise; a second howl much closer than before reverberating against the ancient ruins they had just come from. Cain gulped; his body tensed as he began to circulate the mana coursing through his body in preparation for what was to come next.

*Bang*

Cain's head darted towards the direction he had heard the shot from; a trail of smoke rising fro the tip of Si-woo's gun as he released a shot towards the direction of Agent Lacily and her team; a pack of lizard like creatures in hot pursuit. That however was not what caused Cain to falter in his reaction time; instead it was the sight of a large 9 ft tall tentacled monster of nightmare springing forth from where Agent Quinn had been standing only a few moments ago.

"What the actual fuck is that?!" exclaimed the scarecrow; taking a step back as this alien creature took to the battle; its large tentacles swiping and stabbing away at the reptillians. In response to this, several of the other agents had began to fight back in their own way; the demoness's almost primal fighting style as she clawed the creatures neck out; Jasper's explosive attack with his blade. Even Maia's snakes seemed keen to attack.

More shocked at his fellow agent's own battle prowess; it took a while for Cain to gather the required mana in his right palm; a small opening appearing in the center as dark energy began to seep out from within him; the viscous substance slowly taking the shape of large crows that flew towards the remaining lizard like creatures; these phantasmal creatures swarming the large beasts en masse and halting their movements as they pecked away at their exterior.

The attack itself was not meant to kill, merely distract the approaching beasts as the rest of the team took center stage.

xaira_werveyn-png.484944
Xaira found herself turning away from the mage in sheer embarrassment for a moment as Jasper’s every provocative word caused her heart to beat a little faster (especially when he called her ‘my little Dragoness’). The blush he was referring to only deepening in coloration; clearly, the exactly response he’d wanted out of her. When she finally regained her composure to a degree her tone was she half-met his eyes, finding herself breaking said eye contact out of the sheer intensity and embarrassment of the moment. In the fleeting moment her eyes met JT’s, however, they conveyed a deep attraction.

“Ah, umm… w-we need to focus on getting the hell out of here,” she said. “Afterwards, though… if there’s any way to make you blush for payback, I’ll find it.” She said, managing a coy smirk at the mage for emphasis despite her embarrassment. It was then that sang was very timely with her understandably venomous interjection. At the very least, Xaira had absolutely no doubt in her mind that she wished to pursue more than a professional and friendly relation to Jasper, and that perhaps it was mutual. Although, granted, Sang and likely others had already picked up on the tension between them just the same. Xaira was rather inept at being subtle when it came to advances due to her impulsivity, and while Jasper seemed certain capable of being subtle about the same, it seemed rather clear to Xaira that he didn’t wish to be, especially in this moment.

“Uuuuh, thanks, Sang, I think, and uh, S-sorry..” Was all she could muster in response, feeling even more flustered because of this, if that was at all possible. The Demoness’s added remark that they should “just kiss and get on with it” felt like a final blow to her composure and left her silently running for now, face flushing so hot she honestly felt that all this exercise might end up catching her on fire somehow. Thankfully, that didn't last for too long. A few moments later, she was scanning her environs in a focused manner, and decided upon a course of action: intercept as many of them coming for other agents as she could. Sang and Jasper had refocused as well, after all, and reminding herself that her being focused and ready to respond, react or take action at any moment could well be life-threatening for the entire team further fueled her building resolve.

Thankfully, even the sheer magnitude of the Dragoness’ embarrassment in response to the interaction couldn't keep her from switching gears and focusing wholly on getting everyone out of here in one piece if at all possible. Xaira looked to JT as his order for her to survey the area from on high came through and nodded, giving him a quick “solid copy” through her comms. With that, she lifted off the ground with one fluidly timed kick off the ground while running, flapping her wings a few times to gain momentum from the jump, looking as far ahead of the group as she could. Surveying the swarm not very far from Jasper’s position, at this point her eyes widened.

. “Holy shit… there’s practically an army already covering a pretty damn wide swath from the entrance of that cave; the biggest group of them ain’t too far out now. Brace yourselves, everyone!” He ‘d been right that they may be simply protecting their territory as well, but what if it was far more insidious than that? Something in her gut told her so, and from her experience, her gut was rarely wrong. Either way, for now, she decided to help the others escape, putting her mobility advantage to use as best she could. Jasper immediately came to mind to worry about first, since he’d made it clear he couldn’t keep up his defense for very long. From the comms, everyone else seemed to be a bit farther from them all now, or a bit more hardy in close-quarters, such as whatever Quinn had turned herself into. Besides, it was probably pretty damn clear to basically everyone at this point that Xaira’d already become rather fond of the guy. Bearing all this in mind, she found herself honing back in on his position without a second thought.

Spotting him down below, hard to miss with the sparkly staff he was wielding flashing rather visibly, “Now that I’ve determined that, how ‘bout a lift?” she said, all the while unsheathing and extending the collapsible metal bo staff she carried, gripping it in the middle with one hand, and delivering a strike toward the closest lizard in a precise, well-practiced swipe, her knees bent, following it up by carrying the motion through, her tail swiping simultaneously at others nearby. Afterward, she planted one end of the staff on the ground and used it to leverage a precise roundhouse kick before dropping back into her well-practiced stance, both hands gripping the staff. “Funnily enough, I wield a staff too, but it’s not for casting fancy spells,” she joked. “Come on, hop on my back and I’ll get us closer to the group. Just watch where you’re grabbing.” Smirking even as she kept beating back assailants, she found flirting in the face of battle rather exhilarating.

Finally, finally, things were starting to get interesting! There were so many people running around, shouting orders and shooting attacks, that it was setting off Caddy's senses something fierce. Agent Si-woo's firing gun, a magical explosion, a gorgon hissing protectively, and holy fuck did that kid just sprout tentacles? Caddy felt the corner of his mouth twitch up into his smile and his gums tingled: maybe he could get used to this whole SMITED thing.

He raised his crossbow and, as much as he wanted to start firing wildly, waited as the lizard-like creatures reared up for attacks: aiming at their soft underbellies two or three bolts at a time. Caddy's first few shots rang true, but as the chaos of tentacle monsters and magical blasts whirled around him, he was starting to lose his focus. The creatures kept bounding forward, circling around the groups, and scattering about to find their next opening. Caddy was more used to stealth hits or shoot outs: something where he could hide still behind a wall and take aim at sitting ducks in the dark. The flurry of wild battle around him, though fun, was overwhelming. Just as this realization sunk in, the familiar scent of crisp hay and a crackling fire made its way into the battle.

A flock of crows swarmed the field, their caws bouncing off the cavern walls, and started to peck away at the lizard-creatures that dominated the field. They were a fun distraction for the creatures, having not expected this sudden ambush, and they swiped back at the birds that circled them. Caddy recomposed himself, breathed deeply, and aimed once more. He loosed a bolt into the swarm and watched as it hit a monster straight in the eye: the creature letting out a yowl as it started to rear upwards and Caddy sent several more bolts straight into its stomach. As the monster fell to the ground with a thud, Caddy moved his gaze to a familiar face standing only feet away from his kill and his mouth twitched back up into a smile.

"Reunited at last!" Caddy cried out, waving his crossbow enthusiastically at Cain.
"This beats stale bread and sacks of grain any day, doesn't it!"

Brass was given a quick briefing of the situation and plan of this mission. He didn't understand much but the one thing he did know is that he had to collect things that might be important. Being a larger race he could carry more and possibly move faster. It took longer to bring him into the mission due to not knowing the facility and what some things were.

Placing his swimming gear down and making sure his SMITED logo was visible, his ears perk up to the sounds of howling, these howls came from savage creatures. Knowing the sound of trouble Brass immediately got on all fours and began to chase the sound of gunshots and the smell of blood. It was easy to find the source of the conflict from the flying figures. Quickly coming into the situation Brass shoulder chargers one of the creatures near a red woman and something he has never seen before, something horrifying but amazing. Brass pins down the creature he had previously hit and dug his jaw into the throat of the frantic creature. Brass thrusts his head up pulling some of the innards of his pinned targets throat and hops back howling for his kill.

He steps back enough to be close to his two team mates and yells "I am here, are you pack leader?". He growls and snaps at some of the creatures near by trying to keep up a menacing and savage look.

The Swarm Comes

A few moments after Mara had set down her bag on the ground something skittered anxiously inside unbeknownst to the entire party due to the very large and threatening distraction from the giant vicious lizards coming at them. As the other teams offered cover from the charging creatures to protect Lacily's team, once she reached the safety of the group she turned and pulled out her fan and swiped it so a forceful wind blasted back part of the pack since Quinn had gone to engage them. Quinn's appearance made all the team leader's stomachs churn uncomfortably when their form changed into a tentacle monstrosity. How such a thing could be the sweet naive Quinn was hard to accept.

Quinn's slashing tentacles were effective - at first, killing three - but these weren't dumb beasts. When the first three were struck down or injured grievously the rest changed their tactics keeping just out of range and snapping their jaws at the tentacles and a few successfully grabbing hold.

More joined the initial twelve and more howls called out making it hard to figure out how many were coming as they echoed. The visible part of this swarm kept coming for the agents; Mara in particular as they tried to move to go around the rest of the agents to get to her, some even completely ignoring the mortal threat of the other agents. Two focused on Sang ( Noble Scion Noble Scion ) now after she killed one of them. Three turned their attention to ( Tarmagon Tarmagon ) and circled around him growling at a distance out of reach from his staff. Around six were hellbent on trying to rip off Quinn's ( Birdsie Birdsie ) tentacles. That left... well honestly it left an army for the others to deal with as the swarm kept pushing with sheer numbers without a care to whether they lived or died.

The crows that should have slowed the swarm didn't. The pecking and amount of them did nothing to deter the swarm from their goal of tearing through the agents, though a few who happened to get in just the right spot were either swiped at or chomped on. Where the crows pecked enough to break skin the blur blood dripped from freely and soon enough the ground was speckled in the substance.

As if it had been known they were in danger a new agent appeared and charged into the fray, shredding apart one of the beasts before asking who was the leader. Si-woo fired his gun at one of the lizards charging at him and the beast went limp. "I am the one in charge here," he shouted over the chaotic growls, howls, and noise. "I don't know why you're here but good timing," he said as he fired his gun at another lizard that got to close for comfort, it's claw missing his hands by mere centimeters.

"We're retreating. There are too many of them and staying here is suicide. We're going to back up to the cavern we can through and use it as a funnel while we get the hell out of here. We're too open here and only so many can fight into the tunnel. Lacily and Xaira you are going to cover our retreat. Xaira ( DergTheDergon DergTheDergon ) use your dragonfire to push them back or burn the ones that are too close into ash. Lacily you're going to have to make a wall and Xaira when she Lacily is done with this your priority is grab Lacily and follow after us."

Si-woo barked out orders at the agents and began to usher them back. "Quinn, you'll be covering the rear of the retreat for any strays that manage to get too close."

Tags: None explicitly [/div][/div][div class=title]Maia Sarif[/div][div class=text]Ninety years of life had done little to prepare Maia Sarif for an impending horde of lizard monsters determined to tear her apart. For most of her life, she'd been a teacher, a housewife, a mother. It'd been more than a decade since her husband died, a decade since she'd begun to help SMITED out with what she could. Recently, that'd meant taking field agent training and being put into the kind of action her husband had once thrived in. Looking at the incoming monsters, it genuinely escaped her imagination how he'd lived so long.

Gun in hand, Maia relied on the long hours of training she received and fired. It was the first time she'd actually fired a gun in combat conditions. Thankfully, the monsters weren't shooting back. Unfortunately, a single pistol was unlikely to be enough to stem the tide.

She heard her team leaders order a retreat and Maia obeyed at once, backing up while taking careful shots. Single bullets were rarely enough to kill the lizards but they could certainly wound the monsters, slow them and set them up for being slaughtered by others. She knew her supply of ammunition wasn't infinite so she kept a steady head and hand, only shooting when she felt sure she wouldn't hit another agent. And for the most part, it worked surprisingly well.

At least until a pack of them broke through, heard her gun and decided to charge her. Maia squeaked in horror before rallying, firing half a dozen shots in seconds right into their faces. More tellingly, her snakes spiraled out by the scores, hissing and biting into the creatures. She groaned in pain as one lizard bit through three of her snakes, the pain of it spiraling down the length of her tendrils directly into the base of her skull. A single claw sliced open her wet suit, laying shallow furrows in her flesh. Once more, Maia was grateful that Gorgon physiology was closer to stone than human skin. And the consequence to the lizards for attacking a Gorgon were equally telling. Those her gun hadn't maimed staggered away. Two petrified before her eyes while several more collapsed and crawled into a corner to eventually shake off the venomous paralysis or die.

Maia panted as she picked up the pace, reloading her pistol on the run. She knew she left a blood trail now, knew that most of her venom had been exhausted and it'd be several hours before she had more. Hopefully her ammunition would hold out...[/div]

Jasper couldn't help but chuckle at Xaira's remarks, even as he maintained the defensive weave of his staff. Three of the damned things seemed to have decided that his presence offended them, and they had quickly determined the reach of his staff. Now they snarled and circled just beyond effective strike range.

"As much as I'd love to take you up on that," Jasper quipped, making a sudden lunge that caught one of the beasts menacing Xaira off guard. The keen edge of the blade bit deep, eliciting a squall of pain and a gush of blue blood as the beast retreated, "I think that Si-woo has another job for you."

Before Xaira could reply, the beasts menacing Jasper apparently decided that his assault on one of their brethren couldn't go unanswered. The trio abandoned their circling, rushing Jasper from three widely separated directions. Gritting his teeth, Jasper triggered his glyphs, both the ones on his staff and the ones on his body. Silver fire exploded from his eyes to race along his limbs and staff, forming a glittering edge along the already keen blade. Jasper dashed forward, his sudden burst of speed catching the creatures off guard as he aimed a vicious slash at the closest one's leg. The beast went down in a spray of blood as the hamstrung leg gave way beneath it, though it tried to pull itself ahead as Jasper danced away, delivering a nearly identical strike to its brother?sister?, Jasper didn't know or really care as he turned his attention to the third beast. Unfortunately, this one was either smarter or just faster than its companions. It leapt over Jasper's strike, and its tail lashed out, striking Jasper's shoulder with a wet thud.

Jasper cursed in equal parts pain and anger as he felt his shoulder dislocate. His left arm immediately fell away from his staff, and the creature landed, turning to finish its injured foe. Before it could deliver the fatal swipe of its claws, Jasper plunged his blade into its abdomen one handed, sending a massive surge of his dwindling energy down the haft of the staff. The creature looked at him quizzically as it began to pull itself up the blade, fighting to bring its claws into slashing range, then it stopped, opening its mouth to emit a terrific screech as its body swelled, then exploded into a steaming mass of shredded tissue and a mist of blue blood. For his part, Jasper briefly sagged to one knee before levering himself to his feet and starting to hobble towards the line of fellow agents.

"Shoulder's dislocated," he managed to gasp out. "Got maybe one last strikes worth of power. I'm not going to be much more help here."

The ex-heir to the red chief scowled at the two that had set their eyes on the strips of red oozing out of her bicep as the call for retreat rang out, which did nothing to help her temperament. She, Sang, was to retreat, and that was something that she wouldn't live down. Once a battle was begun, there was no honour in escaping, even if her foe were a number of blind mutts that had grown a bit too large feasting on each other. The very idea of it was enraging. The cuts stung, allowing others to see her quivering under the weight of the ocean was agony, and leaving a battle she had stepped into? It was suicide for what little pride she had salvaged from her time spent away from the place she still believed as her home, even if she was banished.

Although she wasn't exactly showing it, the flirting between the wizard and the dragon had also on her nerves, perhaps jealousy, but seeing others enjoying themselves just added to the kindling fury of hers and how wrong her life had gone, which had accumulated into a strange amalgamation of anger and an intense urge to kill these things before her.

The previous encounter had warned her of the claws this time, and she was more than fuelled to murder these creatures that had insulted her by even managing to touch the skin of her lineage.

she decided the fastest way of dealing with her two main problems, this creature and retreating from the rest of the horde, was to end this locking of eyes by charging the duo.

Sang bolted towards the first with nothing but malice adorning her head, mercilessly avoiding the slashing of talons and fangs by jumping with full momentum for the first of the opponent's throat. It had worked out prior, and this method seemed to work best.

Her own claws dug into the creature's neck until they pierced the very scales, and while the urge to rip out the cartilage was immense, she didn't waste any time and simply crushed it was as much strength she could without straining the wounds she had received, before leaping off the thing that was now writhing in pain, soon to die, and facing her second opponent that had just finished recovering from its previous attack.

She wanted to say something, but found that between the blood staining her hands and the rage that was contorting her face, all that was released was a barbaric growl at the creature, on par with its own inhuman rumblings.

No time was wasted as the demoness charged yet again for the adversary, this time choosing a different approach and barrelling straight into it, using her hardened forearms as a primitive shield against the creature as it attempted to devour her face, only to be met with a skull-shattering slap as she hammered the palm of her hand into the side of its head before rending a scratch across what could only be described as the thing's face, before backing off as it attempted to deal with the pain of the non-fatal wound.

Sang turned and ran towards her retreating allies, having exhausted her anger. It still bothered her that others had dealt with more, but she was too tired and both emotionally and physically fatigued from her fears and her own cuts to bother any more with the contest.

On the way, she slid down into the crevice she'd gone to before and pulled the thick book out from its hole, and continued the retreat with the other members that were each dealing with their own problems in some form or another.

Silently falling back into place, the blood-smeared woman said nothing as her footsteps fell in-tune with the Si-woo's and Maia's as her mind tried not to think about the rage-fuelled killing she had just performed.

Her mind, and face, were blank, despite the splattering of monster gore on her cheek.

As more surrounded Jasper, Xaira kept beating them back, trying to clear an opening for him to hop on, though her ears beheld Si-woo giving her an order integral to the escape of the entire team before then. “Dammit,” she mouthed, ensuring not to trigger the comms then. Of course, she was glad she was being given such an important order, but this seemed like a bad time. Upon activating his runes, however, Jasper seemed to have things covered for now, hopefully. “Be careful, JT. I’ll either come back for you or make sure someone else can, alright?” Her voice carried a tone of forcefulness with clear worry underneath. With that and a quick “roger that, closing in” over the comms in affirmative, she was (regretfully) off, flying over closer to the area Lacily was stationed in at full speed.

She found herself listening intently to the comms for any word from Jasper. No way in hell was she going to lose him this damn early. It already felt like he was a great friend bordering on something much more, and they’d practically just met. It wasn’t too far-fetched for her, though. Xaira had always felt all emotion very deeply and risking your life alongside others tended to give a rather strong boost to any bond between two people, often forging new ones. She couldn’t help but feel further regret even as she landed near Lacily and prepared to carry out her orders.

Out of the corner of her eye, Xaira caught sight of a rather large werewolf that had begun tearing through enemy lines. New agent? Wow, a lot of people had trouble getting here, she thought, though considering where they were it was certainly excusable.

Once she found Lacily, she shouted, “let’s do this, Ma’am!” While standing nearby her. Inhaling, nearby agents would notice her nostrils smoking as she lowered her stance for maximum Dragonfire flow through her humanoid form. Akin to a runner’s starting stance, she was crouched low, head forward as she took in a deep breath, The heat of the flame gathering in her throat. Just before she was about to let it loose, something gave her further pause.

Hearing Jasper over the Comms, his voice pained, report that his shoulder had been dislocated struck the Dragoness with deep fear that froze her in place. “Dammit, someone go get him! Hang in there JT,” she radioed, turning her attention back to the horde in front of her. Anyone that might’ve been seeing her face at this moment would’ve seen fear, regret, and rage on her face all within a small handful of seconds. These creatures did this to Jasper, her mind told her. The very next second, she found herself breathing more flames in a more uncontrolled manner than was wise in humanoid form, absolutely roasting any lizards in range for certain. There was an old Draconic saying that ‘anger makes one’s flames burn hotter’. She found herself darkly hoping it was true.

“Lacily. Wait until Someone's secured Agent Tiegs. Please.” Her tone was far more forceful than she intended, her gaze still leveled fiercely at all creatures within range. This request was honestly the only thing keeping her from disobeying Si-woo’s second order by abandoning Lacily to go back out there, which she also knew was unwise for a multitude of other reasons. It was clear that her lack of authority here, and most other thoughts not governed by her most pressing emotions, had utterly slipped her mind at the moment and thus she was in a rather unstable state right now. She did take some comfort in seeing Sang, Mara and Maia running this way, all injured but likely able to make it now due to her having burnt a swath in the horde. This sight caused her gaze to soften slightly as she looked over them, nodding her gratefulness at each of them that they were safe.

Standing up straight and wincing in pain, rubbing at her throat from the overexertion of her fire breath, she then radioed somewhat raspily. “Someone grab Tiegs, dammit!” She found herself reflexively stepping forward as she normally did before lifting off, before stopping herself once more, and anxiously listening and watching for any sign of Jasper or someone affirming plans to rescue him.

Brass's ears perk up as he listens to the voice to keep in his mind who is the pack leader of the crew. Snapping at the creatures he slashes at their legs to some what stun or immobilize them. He figures they depend on being quadruped to move around quickly. Of course this is something he assumes and is leaning on the fact that none of them have stood up yet. His ears perk up once again to the word fire, his heart begins to beat more than normal and his mind begins to race to the idea of fire. The only things that sunk into his mind was "retreat" and "fire". He turns his head to see the rest of the group began to back up and this was his cue to back up and run as well. Especially if fire was about to be involved.

Following the others who where the furthest away he could smell the scent of blood towards the group, it was a red trail and large splatters of blue, unsure of who's it was he quickly looked at each of his team mates to see if any where too injured to run.

Out of the blue in his mind he realized he is going to go back to base empty handed. Lightly panicking due to failing and the word fire being thrown around. He pulls out a container and scoops the remains of the splattered creature. He quickly stored the container in his bag and begins to run on all fours. Only to realize hes faster than the group and almost runs past everyone. "pack is slow, can carry one hurt but only one trip. Brass tried of long run".

Jasper heard Xaira's increasingly concerned calls over the radio, but for the moment he wasn't going to slow down to reassure the dragoness, since it would have involved slowing down enough to reach across his body to grab the radio slung for left-handed use. Keeping a firm grip on his staff with his right hand, Jasper put his head down and concentrated on moving from a limping walk to a full out run before the energy he had infused into his glyphs faded completely. Fortunately for him, speed was one of the longer lasting effects, and he put it to good use, ignoring his shoulder. After a few steps though, he had to capture his left arm between his staff and his body to prevent the shock of every step from blacking him out. He managed to outdistance the creatures, who seemed to be having second thoughts thanks to the rather impressive amount of firepower, and he had to chuckle through the pain at his mental pun, Xaira had laid down.

Jasper felt the energy ebb from his glyphs just as he drew even with the line of retreating agents, and slowed to a fast walk, then stopped altogether. He had to have some help with his shoulder before he went any further. Slipping his staff into its sheath, he reached across his body for his radio.

"Agent Tiegs has grabbed himself dammit," he sent, though he was sure his voice betrayed the pain he was in. "Your little fireworks display made it possible for me to reach the line. For now, get yourself and Agent Lacily back in one piece. We don't want Si-woo to get into a bad mood."

Cutting the transmission, Jasper looked around. Sang seemed, odd but functional. There was a new, shifter? in the little group, who seemed to be rather competently dispatching the beasts. Maia seemed a little the worse for wear, actually looking like a few of her snakes had been ripped from her scalp, but her pistol was up and her look determined. Quinn was still the tentacled monstrosity he/she/it? had transformed into, but wasn't having things all her own way. The beasts seemed to be at least making life difficult for the changeling monster, latching onto extended tentacles and trying to pull them loose. Si-woo was barking orders when he wasn't firing into the mob of creatures with good effect, and Jasper made a snap decision. He wasn't going to be able to run much more, and definitely not swim out of here until his shoulder was at least popped back into place. Placing himself behind Si-woo, Jasper quickly reviewed the emergency field aid course, then dropped his left arm down beside his body. Reaching down with his right hand, he slowly raised his left arm, rotating the elbow out and back as he lifted. He kept the motion smooth, despite the flare of pain it caused to flash through his shoulder. He was gasping with pain when he finally got his left hand onto his left shoulder, and had to pause for a moment before continuing the motion, pulling his left hand over behind his neck like he was trying to grab his right shoulder.

"Si-woo," Jasper said through clenched teeth, "If you could gently move my elbow up and back slightly, we should be able to reset my shoulder."

The senior agent turned and shot Jasper an exasperated look, even as his non-shooting hand reached out, grasping Jasper's arm just above the elbow. Despite the chaos swirling around them, his grasp was surprisingly gentle as he eased the arm up and back. There was a sharp snapping sensation as the shoulder joint slipped back into the proper position, causing Jasper to cry out in pain, then relief. For his part, Si-woo merely nodded to Jasper, then returned his full attention to the battle raging around them. Jasper sagged for a moment, then slipped his left hand through the strap holding his staff sheath to his back. That would have to do for a sling until they could get somewhere a little less, exciting. Unsealing his holster, Jasper pulled his seldom used pistol and flicked off the safety. He wasn't the worlds best shot, but these things were big and close and he could guarantee that he wouldn't hit one of his fellow agents, so he'd just have to do the best he could.

Calliea lost herself in the chaos. She fought back as the monsters surrounded the team. She fought with her bo, sweat pouring down her face. She had kept close to Mara. For some reason those things wanted her the most so she was making sure none of them came close to them. Soon she was far enough where they weren't on her ass. Their voices were overwhelming her as she was fighting them. It was all their voices at once, they were angry but she still couldn't understand them. She had monster guts and blood on her. She knew that they needed to keep moving, at least keep up with Agent Lacily and the others. She folded up her bo throwing it in her pack and then grabbing her bow. She began to help others with keeping the monsters off their back. Missing quite a few as she was running. She didn't notice due to the adrenaline going through her system but the monster had grabbed her a couple times. Leaving deep gashes. She was too focused on keeping those monsters off her ass. She got to a point where she could aim and shoot.

She breathed in and bent down into a position. Calliea then started to aim and fire keeping the monsters off of agents trying to make it to them. She didn't have much longer before she ran out of arrows. "I'm low on arrows. " She mutters to herself as she grabs another one. Well, this mission has gone completely to shit.

Cain Hawkins
-The Scarecrow-

cain_hawkins-png.484936

"I'd rather stale bread and sacks of grain anyday" replied Cain, conjuring more Crows from the base of his palm. His expression unchanging as ever as he remained focus on the problem ahead of him. "Concentrate on the beasts, this isn't a game.. despite what my body is capable off, I doubt many of the others would enjoy being injured whilst you toyed around" Cain was feeling a bit of strain from within his inanimate body; a faint red glow emanating from where the ruby resided as magic coursed through it. His body would have been heaving in exhaustion from the strain; the act of creating the shadows rather then manipulating the pre-existing ones was far more taxing on his reserves.

With the command to retreat issued, Cain maintained as many of the crows as possible as some of the others began to return to the cavern; Cain only deciding to move towards the end. Whilst not part of the command, his bodies construct generally meant that he'd feel no pain from physical attacks. That being said, he was highly flammable and saw no need to risk being set ablaze as Xaira spewed her dragonic flames. As the last crow 'died', Cain found himself following after the others into the Cavern; the darkness that encompassed the entirety of this cave making him feel somewhat at ease despite their ordeal.

He could work with the shadows in here.

"Yeah, man. I missed you too." Caddy deadpanned to Cain, mostly as a joke, and fired a few more bolts behind them in their retreat. The thought of running away made the man's blood boil, but with the chaos circling around them he didn't blame Si-Woo for making the call. Everyone looked tired, beat as hell, and Caddy's feet kept moving even though his brain kept telling him to keep fighting.

"I'm low on arrows." he hears suddenly, barely above a whisper, and turns his head to see a bloodied woman with a bow drawn. Caddy was amazed to see that she was still standing and fending off the others. As far away as she was from the pack and as well as she was keeping herself up, it left a bad taste in Caddy's mouth to leave someone in her state behind while he was running off without even a nick on his body.
"I'll catch up." He mutters to Cain, patting the being's back as he started to make a mad dash towards the woman's direction.

"Hi! I'm back-up! But everyone just calls me Caddy!" He shouts over the roar of beasts and gunfire, sliding in about five feet next to her. Now closer he can see the fine point of her ears and smiles. The last time he had talked to an elf was with a knife to his throat and significantly less clothes on.
"I got enough ammo to at least distract them. You though", he motions down to her injuries, "should go get that checked out."
He smiles at her, jerks his head the direction of the rest of the retreat, and starts firing at the onslaught of lizard-creatures.

The Retreat

When Sang had bitch slapped one of the lizard creatures and then turned to catch up to the retreating group, one of the beasts took advantage of this attack of opportunity as it charged towards her and chomped down mercilessly on one of her legs. Much like an alligator or crocodile it began to viciously try to rip flesh from bone by shaking it's head and body wildly and engaging as what was called death roll. The scent of Sang's blood in the air caused more of the lizard pack to turn their attention towards her, causing around six of the closest to her to go into a mad frenzy. ( Noble Scion Noble Scion )

As Xaira faced the horde in preparation of using her dragon fire Lacily and Si-Woo covered her as best as they could to prevent any from getting close enough to maul her. "Agent Xaira focus on the task! You're getting too emotional which helps no one!" Si-woo shouted over the comms. Agents always had their lives on the line and if they had to sacrifice one to save the rest it was protocol to save the larger number if it was an unavoidable outcome. If Xaira remained distracted over one agent she was putting not only herself but the entire team at risk of being lizard food.

Thankfully Jasper managed to drag himself to the protection of the group as Xaira barbecued the beasts making the area stink of burning flesh and smoke. When he reached them and asked Si-Woo to help with his shoulder the veteran age moved fast because right now they didn't have the time to dally. He made quick work of helping Jasper and then got the attention of the bestial agent who had arrived late to the party.

"You," he said pointing at Brass ( Thatguynameded Thatguynameded ), "You're going to be Agent Tiegs partner. He falls, you carry his ass out of here." Brass had said he could carry at least one person and so not he was going to be responsible for Jasper if he was unable to continue on his own. Si-woo raised his gun once again and went to shoot but heard and empty click as he had run out of ammo. "Shit!" He quickly released to clip and grabbed another to shove into the gun and shot a fire at the lizard gnawing on Sang's leg. "Actually Brass, you'll have to focus on Agent Red, Jasper can at least walk on his own. Also, get the rest of those things off her ass!"

Over the overwhelming commotion that Calliea heard from the lizard there was the smallest voice that sounded very close, as though it was coming from Mara. "Scary! Scary bad big things! You woke them up being so noisy! Now making more noise!" It's voice was none of the agents in the team but whoever or whatever it was, it was very scared and upset. ( r e i r e i )

Lacily had waited till Xaira had used her dragonbreath to create a larger gap between themselves and the majority of the horde, using the small window of time to first make the ground slick with ice with a magical trap to spike whoever stepped onto it. She created a dome of ice which took quite a bit out of her magically to produce something of that size, scale, and thickness. She wasn't sure how long it would hold and she wasn't going to stick around to find out. "Let's get out of here," she said Xaira as she turned to stagger after the group. "I need to get to the entrance of the cavern to seal it and buy us more time."

Once Lacily and Xaira made it to the cavern entrance that had opened up to the city Lacily paused and saw the lizards crashing through the ice. They had been throwing themselves at it madly causing blue blood to splatter onto the sections where they had slammed their bodies into it. She used the last of her magic to seal the cavern tunnel with as thick of an ice wall as she could. She completed it just as the first lizard slammed head first into it caused a loud and sickening crack, but the ice held firm.

Lacily's legs gave out then and her body felt shaky as though one would feel when their blood sugar levels were unstable. "A little help," she gasped out as she struggled to stand back up.

"Get to the supply point, put on your diving gear as quickly as you can. If you have to abandon items to do so, do it. No scroll is worth your life. Go!" Si-woo barked out the orders and waited for his team to run their asses back to the point of the cavern system where they had emerged from the water. He didn't know if these things could swim and he didn't want to find out. He knew what he was going to have to do when they reached the supply crates.

"When you hit the water, you swim for your lives. I'll have to set a timer on the mines and close this place up or risk having those things swim after us which gives us no chance of survival."

Mara tried her best to stay out of the way of their assailants. For the most part it was effective, being able to safely grab her bag and prepare to depart.

Once they were inside the cavern with the entrance sealed (for now) she took a few breaths and made sure to secure her pack after having rummaged through it. Next time she went exploring ancient ruins she had to make sure she was armed. Being forgetful thankfully didn’t have much of an impact, but agents were still wounded. How were they expected to swim to the surface?

“Who do I need to assist?” She asked to no one in particular. Mara’s voice was taught but level, her eyes shifting from Lacily to Sang and Jasper while awaiting a response.

Quinn-Johnson.png
Kqyhnn did not step back, and did not yield any territory. These were lesser predators, lesser creatures. Unintelligent, not made from the same elder cells of Yog-Sothoth that gave beginning to the spawn of the stars - they had zero potential as celestials, and even less potential to make a society or civilization. At least in that regard, humans were superior. These lizards weren't even fit to be servitors, truth be told.

Seeing six of them target its tentacles, the black eldritch horror took on a 'carrot on a stick' tactic, strategically luring in a creature with one tendril by putting it close, almost within reach, like a sweet nectar of victory you could almost taste, only to then attack from behind with another, aiming for the throat, spine, or other important places. A killer instinct guided the tentacles' aim, honed and passed on after thousands of years of experience, and yet intelligent and aware of anatomy and the workings of organisms - for the spawn of Nyarlathotep were creatures who interacted with the universe on a level that most others of their kind did not.

The tentacles were an eldritch tool, sort of. They were the result of subconscious genetic self-engineering, with selected traits being passed on to spawn. This was why a Great Old one could produce spawn that differed vastly from themselves. The tentacles could be created from repurposed biomatter in seconds with ease, and manipulated just as much - the regenerative factor made sure of those. There was an arbitrary limit to their length and number, though, in the form of the processing power it took to deftly manipulate all of them.

Still, Kqyhnn kept fighting.

Its frenzy was accentuated by a freckling smell of the salty-sweet fragrance, with the characteristic chemical taste of iron. Blood.

In this state, its organism wasn't optimized for human interaction. The language faculties in the neurons were repurposed for multitasking, combat, and regeneration, and the body itself was made more with aquatic movement in mind. But among the various voices, it made out some basic facts - the red woman was hurt, and the strong man was hurt, too, but in another way.

Someone called its name and barked an order - cover the rear of the retreat, pick off any strays. New direction for its pre-existing function.

The black-brown nightmarish thing's body paused - though the tentacles kept doing what they were doing as if ruled by a separate nervous system - and a swarm of eyes sprouted on its left side to inspect the smell of blood. The eyes were terrifying, inhuman; yellow scleras, with black pupils shaped like hourglasses. Either the pupils were the same as irises, or there were no irises.

The eyes spied on what was happening. They saw a pack of creatures converging on the Red one and attacking it. Sang, was its name, Kqyhnn thought. Though someone else was already moving into rescue, the smell of her blood invigorated the creatures nearby.

Why did mortals - or in this case, demons, Kqyhnn guessed? - have to be this delicate? Kqyhnn's tentacles snapped back into its body, momentarily. The nightmarish fiend went from immobile artillery to speeding tank in seconds, ramming into one of the lizards (preferably the one assaulting the demon woman's leg,) and standing above 'Sang' to act as an organic shield.

These creatures were primitive, with only claws and teeth to attack. No magic, no chemicals, no fire: no threat. They could tear away flesh, crack bone, and Kqyhnn would recuperate with ease, but the same could not be said for 'Sang.'

Brass changed his direction to make his way to Tiegs, not knowing who he was, he made his way to to the man who was not bleeding but in pain. Then the scent of even more blood filled the air, not of the creatures but of one of the team mates. New orders where shouted to him and he knew the red woman was the subject of this new order. Running on all fours he quickly makes it to the red woman, the monster with tentacles seemed to have rushed over to play defense while brass recovers her. He empty's his large back pack except for that one water proof container holing the blood and guts of a creature.

With both of his hands, he grabs Sang and shoves her into his back pack. She didn't fit and only reached up to her knees but it roughly imitated a saddle. He tenses his arms and says "Hold on red woman, grab fur". Then begins to to run on all fours, he chose not to sprint because he believes he needs to keep up his strength. Running with the same speed of everyone he kept an eye out for an opportunity to impress the new pack and current pack leader.

Ears twitch to a weak voice calling for help he slides to a stop and turns around and rushes to the aid of the woman with white hair. He grabs Lacily and lays her across his shoulders. "red woman, hold her down", then bass stands still for a second and begins to breath heavier. Brass closes his eyes and his fur begins to rise up. He attempts to tap what little animal instincts he has in order to push himself to the max limit. He slams his fists on the ground and give a powerful howl that echos throughout the entire cavern. He has 10 minutes before exhaustion kicks in and passes out. Then he leans forward and Sprints towards the supply point. Sprinting past everyone and ignoring everyone and anything, the only thing that can stop him is the water.

Leaving everyone behind, makes it to the supply point with not sure what to do next, but it has to happen fast before he blacks out.

Calliea was about to reply to Caddy when she heard the voice. She held up her hand, closing her eyes trying to distinguish where that voice was coming from. She blocked out the rest of the voices from the lizards coming out them. And she heard the tiny ass voice coming from Mara's bag. "Mara....there's something near you." She shouted, raising up immediately. She ignored the pain as usual and quickly walks to the group that was ahead with Mara. "Ma'am there's a thing speaking...and it is speaking a language I can understand. It's coming from Ms. Mara." She again closed her eyes listening to the thing speak.

As she listens, she speaks on what it was saying "Scary! Scary bad big things! You woke them up being so noisy! Now making more noise!" She opened her eyes. Calliea then turned back to Caddy and said "Can you keep those monsters at bay while we figure out what the hell did she bring out from that cave?" She sighed as she looked at him "At least distract them for a bit. " She said all this while bleeding from multiple spots. This is what her father was truly afraid of, with her high endurance, and pain tolerance. She can't feel that her body is in danger. Calliea understood this, but she also knew that she was having the time of her life right now. Fighting was what she was made of.

Her instincts urged her to help the other agents but they seemed to mostly be helping themselves. If anything, she was the one creating risk for the group. She'd lost a few snakes and still bled, and she was denser than they were. Not slower, exactly, but less nimble, less able to pivot or redirect her momentum. As she ran through the caves, it was only an incremental difference but increments accumulated.

The sight of her team leader sealing the cavern with magical ice merited a sigh of relief. Not quite safety but she was somewhat less likely to die in the next minute. Seeing the dragon-woman handling Lacily, Maia moved up and held out her arms. "I can carry her. I'm already in my wetsuit. I'll help her get in hers, you focus on getting in your own diving equipment."

If the women are amenable, the Gorgon cheerfully takes up the elven team lead and says, "That's quite the trick you pulled there, ma'am. Thank you for saving us. Now, let us take care of you too."[/div]

Caddy turned his head to tell the elf to get going, but was surprised to be met with the palm of her hand: rude. She said a lot of words, strung them all together real nice, but he didn't know who or what the hell she was getting at. Voices? She can hear voices in all of this chaos? God, elves. He tries to listen to her as he keeps firing bolts: distracts one lizard from sneaking up on that sparkly wizard, halts a few that were trying to surround the werewolf and demon-woman, sends another (accidentally) whizzing past Si-Woo's head.
"Sorry, Chief!" He calls out, and bites his lip. He wasn't going to be able to keep this up for long. He thought about the canteen strapped around his back and wondered if now was the time to use it...

"Look, Legolas," Caddy bites, firing another shot past Si-Woo (albeit hitting something this time).
"I don't know who or what the fuck you're talking about, but all the elves I've ever met have pretty okay judgement. If you think you can solve whatever this is in, in your critical condition, then you have as much time as I have bolts." He fires another shot, misses, curses under his breath and turns to look at her, wonders why she's still standing there, and grimaces at her wounds. Goddammit.
"Get to Mara and then get the fuck out of here." Caddy nods, reloads his crossbow and gets ready to aim.
"Go."

Jasper held his fire for the most part, only taking the occasional shot as a target too tempting to pass up crossed his sights. Reloading would be a pain, even with his shoulder re-set. Si-woo seemed to think he needed a nursemaid, since he directed the new shifter to assist Jasper, but quickly changed his orders as one of the creatures savaged Sang's leg. Before Jasper could fire, Quinn, in response to more barked orders by SI-woo was just suddenly there, guarding Sang as the shifter dumped the contents of a huge pack onto the ground and then stuffed Sang bodily into it before dashing off in the direction of their egress point.

"Okay," Jasper said as he began a careful retreat, "That's definitely scoring a 10 on my wierd-shit-o-meter, and that takes a LOT."

Any further smart assed comments were cut off by a wave of magic as Lacily took advantage of Xaira's fire-blast to erect an ice wall between them and the bulk of the creatures.

"You heard the man folks!" he shouted. "Your teammates are far more important than anything else down here. Someone's moving slower than you, help em out."

A resounding 'crack!' from the ice wall as one of the creatures slammed into it made the need for haste all the more evident, and Jasper began a careful jog to the rear, keeping his eyes open for new threats.

"Quinn, quite playing and just kill the damned things on this side of the ice wall! Xaira, help make certain Lacily gets to the egress point. Let's MOVE people."

Si-woo’s orders had gone unnoticed in Xaira’s moment of panic, until she heard Jasper’s voice over the comms. His forceful yet seemingly almost joking way of telling her he was alright, even though he was clearly still in pain, caused her to smile very slightly for just a moment before a serious expression that matched the very-serious-indeed situation at hand returned to her Visage. “Copy that, JT,” she said, deep relief plain in her voice, her senses regained.

The moment that Lacily had finished with her shield, Xaira was right there beside her, the dragoness feeling rather guilty for single-mindedly worrying about Jasper so much she halted while they all were in danger. “Hang on tight, Ma’am.” She had not realized yet that she hadn’t yet donned her wetsuit, focusing for now on getting Lacily away from the stragglers. She really hoped that everyone would be able to escape with their injuries, and Mara appeared rather worse-for-wear herself. Thankfully, the Gorgon in particular seemed to be holding up well. She even offered to take Lacily from her. The Dragoness’s eyes widened a bit as the motherly Gorgon reminded her that she needed her wetsuit. She nodded Carefully allowing her to support Lacily before rushing over and donning her wetsuit. “Be ready to give her back to me, Maia. You’re injured, I’ve got her.”

As she donned her wetsuit, she caught sight of Jasper walking on his own and was relieved, find herself looking into his eyes for a moment. She felt a bit embarrassed that she’d worried so much of him earlier seeing that he was still fine on his own and knowing that she had the rest of the team to worry about as well, and a bit of blush covered her features for a moment. He inspired her to snap out of it and keep moving with his words, though, as always, and the moment she had her wetsuit on, mask and all, she went over to Maia and began to once more carefully take hold of Lacily, clearly hell-bent on getting her to safety, despite it all. God, this was a mess, she thought, glancing nervously back at the others as she made sure Lacily was suited up and ready to go. “Alright Ma’am, unless you think you can swim right now, which I doubt, hold on tight,” she said, as she prepared to take the dive while praying that everyone would make it out safely. She’d have to bet on the others still closer to the wall Lacily made being able to eradicate the stragglers, and for the wall to hold up, of course.

The Retreat 2

The lizards fells for Quinn's tentacle trap (huehue pun intended) and were easily dispatched by the terrifying creature. The attacks on the lizards who were focused on Sang was pulled by their attacker and allowed Sang to be assisted by Brass in order to get her safely out of the cavern. What wasn't expected was for Brass to shove Sang ( Noble Scion Noble Scion ) into his large back pack like an adult baby carrier, nor was he expected to assist Lacily; who he ran back and grabbed and proceeded to throw her over his shoulder like a fireman. Before Lacily can protest his actions he bolts and takes off down the cavern tunnel they had entered from and all she could do was let out a shriek of shock and grab fistfulls of fur to hang on for dear life or be thrown off the rushing Wolffolk.

Unfortunately Brass's ( Thatguynameded Thatguynameded ) plan was.... a bad one. He managed to reach where the cavern system was accessed from the water, but before he would be able to even get back into the water to swim the hours back to the surface he'd black out, which made him a new liability since he hadn't listened to Si-woo's orders or considered the time it had taken for him to even get into the city in the first place. So, when he blacked out due to pushing himself it caused Sang and Lacily to crash with him.

Thankfully since they were on his back they weren't crushed under him, but still Sang and Lacily would have to scramble off him, or in Sang's case out of his back pack. Lacily helped Sang get into her gear, but not before doing some quick first aid for the gash on her leg and the covered it with a waterproof patch to keep her from excessively bleeding out once they got into the water.

Si-woo didn't hear what Calliea ( r e i r e i ) said, only seeing her seemingly being distracted which caused him to call out. "Agent Ru we do not have time to do a bag check! Get your ass moving now! Assist Agent Sarif! Agent- "

He was cut off by the sound of something whizzing by his head followed by a 'Sorry Chief' from Caddigan. "Caddigan," he growled out, "Go with Ru and Sarif and get the fuck out of here and into the tunnels and swim your asses back to the fucking ship! Xaira help Jasper! You ignore these orders you're going to get blown up with the lizards, got it?"

(Since there were issues where posts ignored Brass grabbing Lacily, but his post was before those I've sort of had to ignore sections of posts and sort of try and get things back in order. So we're just going to skip and assume everyone is at the ocean access.)

When everyone was back at the part of the cavern system that they had entered through via the ocean there were already signs of the water rising. "Get your gear on as quick as you can. If you have to leave something behind do it, don't weight yourself down. Mara, you are going to help Maia lug the wolf, you're a merfolk and have advantage in the water. Get him in some gear as best as you can. Xaira you're helping Jasper. Calliea help Lacily. Caddigan you're with Cain, help Sang. Do not stop. I'll be behind everyone and setting a timer on explosives because I don't want to find out if those things will swim after us."

Beyond keeping all of this awful moisture off her skin, Maia was already suited up and ready to swim. The only painful part was when she had to tuck her snakes back beneath her diver's hood to shelter them from the water, as several severed heads required careful tucking, resulting in the rubber of the suit rubbing against what amounted to open wounds. It couldn't be helped, though.

At Si-Woo's orders, the Gorgon nodded and bent to haul the unconscious wolf. Thankfully, she was much stronger than a human woman would have been. Working with Mara, she helped put on a diving mask to ensure their fellow agent didn't drown on the trip back. Then she hauled him into the water with her and belted several ropes around him, tying them off with clips to the underwater propeller-driven craft. This was the nervous part for both of them; ensuring the comatose agent didn't drown and ensuring she didn't sink instead of surface.
