Setting;

The OVCU are based in a building near Scotland Yard; it shares the building with other units, but they are situated on the newly refurbished 4th floor with some of the latest equipment. Our characters will be spending a lot of time here!

The roleplay will be taking us everywhere - from Central London to the surrounding boroughs. As part of the roleplay, I will include a description/images of a place as and when needed in the RP thread, or if it becomes a frequent spot, I'll add it here.

The Police;
(most of this information is from Wikipedia!)

Detective Constable:
Constable is the first rank, one rank below a sergeant and five ranks below chief superintendent in all police forces in the United Kingdom.

Within the British Police all police officers are sworn in as and hold the basic powers of a constable. Upon being sworn in, each officer starts at the rank of constable and is required to undergo a two-year probationary period. Before becoming DCs, our constables wear an epaulette attached to the uniform, displaying their collar number (also called a shoulder number). Within Greater London's Metropolitan Police, all constables and sergeants display a divisional call sign, as well as an individual number.

Upon successful completion, constables can remain at their current rank, specialise in criminal investigations or one of many other specialist units (i.e. being chosen for the new unit), or apply for promotion to sergeant, the first supervisory rank.

Typical annual wage for our DCs will be around £32,000.

It is advisory that our characters will have had at least a year's experience as a DC in a different unit, just to prove themselves.
Detective Sergeant:
Within the British police, sergeant is the first supervisory rank. Sergeant is senior to the rank of constable, and junior to inspector. The rank is mostly operational, meaning that sergeants are directly concerned with day-to-day policing. Uniformed sergeants are often responsible for supervising a shift of constables and allocating duties to them.

Detective sergeants are equal in rank to their uniformed counterparts; only the prefix 'detective' identifies them as having completed at least one of the various detective training courses authorising them to conduct and/or manage investigations into serious and/or complex crime. They also provide a supervisory role.

Unlike the military and allowing for regional variations, addressing a police sergeant as "sarge" is not always seen as incorrect. Additionally in some forces (especially the Metropolitan Police) sergeants are referred to as "skippers" and again allowing for regional variations, context and expectations it is not necessarily wrong for a constable to address his/her sergeant as "skip" or "skipper".

Typical wage for our DS' will be around £40000.
Detective Chief Inspector
Detective chief inspector (DCI) is usually the minimum rank held by a senior investigating officer (SIO), who heads major investigations (e.g. murder), and a pool of these officers usually works out of force headquarters or major police stations. The senior Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer in each BCU usually also holds this rank.

Those holding the rank of DCI can be referred to as the "gaffer" by their team, though not usually to their face. Typically addressed as sir or ma'am.

Typical wage for a DCI will be around £55000.
