Oberan

Prince of Faeries
Hello and welcome to my requiem for reveries, a repository of plots and stories I'm looking for. If you see one that strikes your fancy, please PM me!

About Me

Pleasure to meet you, my name is Oberan. I've been play-by-post roleplaying for over a decade, but have just recently come back after a short hiatus away from forums. I'm a male in my late twenties, and I work full time as a librarian. If you want to know any more than that, feel free to ask!

My Roleplaying
I'm a somewhat busy person most of the time, and so I'm not always available. My IC posts tend to be 2-5 paragraphs long, depending on my partner's post length, and come about once a week. I may post more or less depending on my schedule and motivation, but I'll always be clear on what to expect! I also strive to have proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Below is an example of my writing.

The raucous sound of newly minted adventurers carried throughout the guild hall, as warriors and mages alike congregated together to form parties and share stories. Their cajoling laughs created a warm and inviting atmosphere for those peering in from outside. Among those inside stood a lone, dazed knight. His sword was rusted and his armor was dull, but his eyes shone brighter than the halo of golden hair atop his head. He wore his freshly obtained adventurer’s badge with pride, only available to players who’d mastered the basics of the game.

Atlas’s eyes roamed around the room at a rapid pace, trying to take it all in at once. Moongate was his first ever VRMMO, and the quality of the game was absolutely stunning. Something like this was easily going to become an addiction for him, he could already tell. If he didn’t know for a fact that this was a video game, he didn’t think he’d ever be able to tell. The sun warmed his skin, music tickled his ears, a breeze tousled his hair, and the people – oh the people. They told him to move. Wait, was that right?

“Hey, idiot, are you deaf? Move out of the way.”

Atlas slowly came back to himself, no longer processing everything through the haze of excitement one usually reserved for winning the lottery. Turning his head, he came face to chest with the one he assumed was responsible for the biting remarks. Craning his neck, he first met a clean shaven clefted jaw, then pursed lips, a crooked nose, and finally perhaps the most piercing stare he’d ever seen.

“You’re holding up the line, dumbass,” the man said, taking a step closer and forcing Atlas to move back or get pushed over by the sheer volume of his aggressor.

Atlas looked to either side of man, only to be met by mixed expressions of exasperation and annoyance of those also waiting in line.

In line?

Had he not wandered away after talking with the secretary responsible for registering new adventurers? No, no, he was certain that he had. Or maybe not. It was easy to let his mind wander, and the idea of being able to finally accept missions may have gotten to his head.

Well, whether he had gotten lost in his daydreams or not, he was obviously in this group of people’s way. Atlas grinned at the man sheepishly.

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize that I’d spaced out. I’m just gonna…” he pointed towards the mission board across the room, barely visible through the throng of those perusing the available requests made by NPCs and PCs alike.

His outgoing personality clearly didn’t sway the man, who merely grimaced and said, “You do that,” before pushing Atlas out of the way. After tripping for a few feet, Atlas managed to regain his balance, but his shoulder throbbed from the rough treatment. A game like Moongate would never allow its players to actually get hurt, but that didn’t mean you felt nothing when someone or something knocked into you with enough force.

Deciding that he didn’t want to get into a fight before his adventure could even begin, Atlas made his way to the display of missions he’d pointed to earlier, tenderly rubbing his upper arm. The number of requests was unbelievable and it seemed that as soon as someone took one off the board, two more spawned in its place. He had no idea where to begin, but with so many people milling about he supposed the ones he could actually reach would have to do.

‘Collect mint herbs from the Buie Fields.

It seemed simple enough, but it wasn’t something he was particularly interested in.

‘Safely deliver a package from the Adventurer’s Guild to Amaris at the Thule Outpost, located to the east of Clares.’

Also fairly easy, but it lacked danger.

‘Eradicate the nest of Mushroom Grunts that have recently made their home in the Kuiper Forest.’

Now that’s what he was looking for. Without any hesitation, or reading the rest of the information on the sheet, he ripped it off the wall and spun in place. This was it, this was going to be his first mission. He would squeal if he were alone in his room. Unfortunately, he was not, and so he’d have to settle for subtly shaking his entire body to a tune he played in his head.

While he could probably handle some mushrooms on his own – he was a certified adventurer after all – it was always more fun to do things with other people. His eyes began searching the crowd for anyone that stood out.

‘It’s never a bad time to make a friend!’ he thought.

My Expectations
I have a few expectations in a roleplaying partner! Hopefully nothing too scary! First off is respect for each other! It's gotta be mutual, and we need to be able to communicate! For posts, I prefer partners who post the same length and frequency as I do. It keeps things balanced, and allows me to feel less guilty if a post takes longer than a few days to churn out. I also expect proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation - within reason. I also like partners who enjoy working together to further a plot, so if you're looking for someone to give you a story or play one out that's already planned I'm sadly not the one for you!

I only RP via the forum boards, and typically prefer an OOC and an IC thread, as opposed to using PMs or services such as Discord. (Although, the messaging system on here is pretty sophisticated and may work for OOC!)

Characters
I pretty much strictly play human/humanoid characters. I'm comfortable with my partners playing non-humanoid characters if the situation calls for it, as long as my character isn't romantically involved with them. I don't have a preference for character genders, I'll play both males and females, and I'm open to non-binary genders although I've yet to write a character who is. I'm also open to all types of relationships, if the plot calls for one. There's only one issue I have in regards to characters, and it's that I don't write canon individuals. So while I'm open to fanfiction settings, I always play with and as original characters.

Plots
Now we're getting to the meat of the post! I generally don't like to plan in-depth ideas, so that I can mold the story with my partner. Below are some of the general plots that I'm interested in. I'm happy to alter and expand any of them with whoever is interested! Although! I'm only looking for one or two stories right now, as I get back into the swing of things. I'll update the thread as necessary in that regard! I tend to lean more towards fantasy than any other genre, but I'm open to other possibilities. Keep in mind that the below are not necessarily romantic - in fact, I tend to prefer platonic.

I'm not sure what it is about adventuring that really gets to me. It could be my love for RPG games or D&D - but I find the thought of someone taking on quests, earning rewards, and growing stronger very appealing. I have a couple of thoughts in this regard.

First is the most straight forward. I'd love to write a story of two fledgling adventurers who take on simple quests like killing Slimes or collecting Goblin Fangs before working their way up to Dragon extermination. This type of story could be a simple one-and-done, involving the completion of a single quest - or it could be an epic adventure spanning years in the story world. I don't have any plans on how the world would work aside the fact that I prefer high fantasy - so think knights, mages, kings, etc. Fairly typical.

The second is a bit explorative in regards to storytelling. Instead of two adventurers, perhaps two employees at an adventurer's guild. Two characters in charge of posting and processing requests and completions. Handing over rewards after collecting the goods. It would involve a lot of side characters, as we'd essentially be creating the adventures behind the scenes. I haven't really fleshed this idea out much, so I don't have any concrete ideas with this. If you're interested and have some ideas to share, please reach out! I think it sounds fun, if not a bit challenging.

In the same vein of fantasy, I think it would be fun to play as two knights. We could possibly be two knights working for the same house, protecting our Lord or Lady (Or one character could be the knight and the other could be the Lord or Lady). We could also be knights of opposing houses. We frequently meet during the escort of our Lord or Lady, or perhaps even on a battlefield. Really I'm pretty open with this idea. All I really have is 'swords are cool'.

Political intrigue! Underhanded tactics! Cruel and selfish noblemen! The drama is endless in a High Court setting! Any sort of situation involving high court sounds appealing to me, but especially creating a world where the drama is intense. I'm not looking for your typical young adult romance involving an heiress and the prince. No no no, I'm thinking along the lines of a Prince and his assistant trying to work the system. Gaining new allies and thwarting enemies. Stopping assassination attempts, or even sending our own. I want to get into the real meat of fantasy politics, and I want it to be dramatic and suspenseful. That isn't to say there can't be romance in this setting (no smut) but I don't want it to be the primary focus of the story. Again, I don't have a world or characters fleshed out, so this idea is open for interpretation!

I want to sling spells and kill goblins. Any high fantasy suggestions are welcome! Sorry, this one's a bit disappointing.

That's what I have for now! Again, please PM me if you're interested in any of these plot-lines!

Updates to the post will be kept in a log down here at the bottom of the first post. Check back regularly for updates! Thanks!
