Futuristic Mecha sci fi roleplay interest check!

Inheritor
Hey there, thanks for dropping by. So I have a lot of time these days alone with my thoughts in the lab and I realised that I really fancied a mecha rp, most likely spurred on by me playing Titanfall 2 again recently. So I cooked a little universe up that could be our stage and filled it with enough lore to get the ball rolling, all I'm missing is a few other players to interact with. Hopefully that is where you come in. Anyway without further ado I will present what rambled thoughts I've put together so far, just keep in mind that I am going to be keeping certain bits of information from you for the sake of a little mystery.

So the year is 2042, things are going relatively well. Humanity finally got its collective asses together and managed to form two unions, the E.C.C (External colony collective) and the N.E.C (Nations of earth collaboration). The former consisted of the few planets and moons that had been colonized by humans, Luna, Mars, etc. Everyone down on Earth belonged to the N.E.C. It was through these two great superpowers that humanity managed to get a handle on climate change, new technologies blossomed and almost total peace was achieved on Earth. There were still issues of course. The one that loomed over the earth like a great shadow was population growth, so many mouths to feed and with only so much planet to go around. But with the entire world focusing on the issue things didn't look so bleak, a solution would surely be found. Whilst the miracle remedy was still being searched for other plans were put in place, families were only permitted to have two children maximum, cities began to climb into the sky instead of spreading horizontally. Food was a bigger problem, the E.C.C pioneered synthetic meats in an effort to combat the problem but it wasn't enough to completely erase it. There was worry that the peace might fail if things continued to get worse. There had always been worries like this about the outer colonies, separated as they were from the governing bodies of Earth. Terrorist groups blossomed out there like fungus. But before that could happen a new problem presented itself, a new threat the likes of which humanity had never seen in all its many long years on Earth. A portal almost a km across appeared in Russia and from within it came the beasts that would be appropriately dubbed "Demons". These Demons came in an incredible range of shapes and sizes, from those the size of a common dog to those the size of battleships. Each demon was individual in some way, one may crawl on 40 legs and have a pyramid shaped body made of reptilian flesh whilst another may almost look human in nature, albeit with a whipping tendril lined with eyes and sharp barbs in place of a head. The point is whilst always organic in nature they can take pretty much any form. The first wave in Russia consisted mostly of small Demons but due to the nature of the attack it resulted in heavy casualties. The portal disappeared shortly afterwards only to appear again, a month later in Afghanistan. This time the Demons were bigger, more lethal and destructive. It was an arduous battle but the beasts were once again dealt with. It went on like this for the best part of a year, each attack worse than the last. The E.C.C announced that it was activating what it called the "Hibernation" protocol, effective immediately. Every individual colony within the E.C.C went into complete isolation, huge blast shields forming protective cocoons around them. The E.C.C had decided they would sit out on humanities fight for survival and would instead remerge when the dust had settled. Now fighting entirely by themselves the N.E.C grew more desperate and deployed new technologies in their efforts to combat the foe. Mechs had been a useful tool to humanity ever since the 2030s but they proved invaluable in combating demons, versatile enough to deal with more than your average tank and without the huge amounts of collateral damage that bombs would cause. But they were too slow, far too difficult to pilot with conventional controls. That's where our characters come in. They are to be the operators of a new generation of mech, the most sophisticated models yet. This is all thanks to the work of C.A.M.P (Combat approved mech program) who supplied individual governments within the N.E.C with a new neural interlink system that allowed for Operators to link their minds with an all new generation of A.I, enabling them to control the mech as easily as their own bodies. It's a risky process and due to the nature of the neural link system only an incredibly small handful of people have been chosen from the population to trial the programme. Operation "Headache" was put into action, all children would take a mandatory full brain scan at birth in an effort to find eligible candidates. Now this next bit is gonna sound a little bit odd but its very important, all applicants chosen share these particular traits; 19-20 years of age, have a deceased family including a sibling and must have lost their family at a young age in an incident involving Demons. I know, very specific but that's just how it is. Anyhow the rp will be starting with the arrival of our applicants at the C.A.M.P main base of operations (An artificial island off the coast of France, freshly transported in from their civilian lives. They will begin with a little augmentation surgery (Hey you signed the forms before you came to C.A.M.P no backing out now) and then onto basic training. Given time they shall move on to Demon killing. Each mech was specialised by the applicants country of origin to best suit them, giving each one a unique look and set of abilities.

Phew I think that is most of the exposition I wanted to dump here so I'll move on to what I'm looking for in partners. As I mentioned in the title I'm looking for a max of three other roleplayers, preferably two females and another male for the sake of diversity but that isn't a deal breaker if that can't be the case. Decent grammar and length of posts is expected, at least a good quality paragraph even if you are just talking to another player. Mature themes will be explored in this roleplay so if you have a problem with that this won't be for you. Let me know if you’re interested!

Fascinating. I get some NGE vibes from this, but that's not a bad thing, since I absoutely adore NGE.

Oh NGE definitely had a hand in this, along with every other sci fi franchise I've ever seen. Titanfall, NGE, hell even Red vs Blue.

Anyway just a little more info I had a few minutes to write up, expect a few more exposition dumps over the next day or so.

Mecha classifications

A little more information on what to expect from the mecha of this universe! Despite the fact that each mech deployed by C.A.M.P has its own unique look and combat style given to it by the nation that supplies it all of them can be separated into one of three unique classifications. At their core each mech has been equipped with an A.I neural link device which connects to the machines implanted surgically in the skulls of operators to provide a near perfect symbiosis between man and machine.

Shrikes

The shrike class of mech is the smallest and lightest that is currently active in the field, making up for it’s lower than average defence and strength by being incredibly nimble. Standing at anywhere between 25 - 30 feet tall on average they still strike an imposing figure and are just as lethal as any of the other classes. Shrikes are usually deployed in either a CQB or ranged role, utilising their superior mobility to either dodge around targets or keep them pinned down from a distance.

Paladins

The standard build of mechs, a fine balance of offence and defence. Ranging in height from 30 - 40 feet paladins are a versatile platform for a variety of weapons and equipment. Pretty much any weapon you can imagine can be used with one of these, sidearms to rocket launchers.

Rooks

The largest and most well armoured mech class, rooks are hulking machines that have forgone mobility in favour of maximum firepower. Standing at anywhere between 40 - 45 feet these powerhouses are usually deployed in support roles, laying down massive amounts of fire to keep demons at bay. Whilst it is possible to equip them with pretty much anything they are the only class of mech that can be equipped with some of the heaviest weapons available at C.A.M.P including shoulder mortars and railguns.

Hmm. A mech type that sacrifices mobility for overwhelming strength and firepower?
Yes please.

I only have a few questions:

1) Can we use anime face claims?

2) Are we limited to having 1 character?

Ooh, I'd love to help with worldbuilding if you're open to that.

I only have a few questions:

2) Are we limited to having 1 character?

Anime face claims are fine, but I also accept well written descriptions!

As for the characters.... For now, no. One operator per person. I just find multiple characters get real messy really fast. However you will have control of a few NPCs! Your A.I and pit crew are specific to your mech so feel free to give each a little flair :)

Operators

You! Or at least the character you’ll be playing. operator is the name given to those who pilot mechs against the demons, the individuals who blur the line between man and machine. Older generations started as soldiers and worked their way up to becoming operators but you will be part of a new generation, one that with the help of augmentations should prove the strongest yet. Being implanted with the most complex A.I yet made has its perks, the newest generation of operators can process information much faster than ordinary humans and are more in sync with their machines. The A.I even come pre-installed with information pertaining to your expected combat role, meaning even the clumsiest person will quickly become an efficient soldier.

Due to a neural link that is maintained by their A.I implants the newest operators are able to move their mechs as if they were their own bodies, no need for manual controls. This neural link can mean that damage to the mech can be “ghosted” on to the operator, the body convinced it should be feeling pain despite a lack of physical injury. C.A.M.P insists this is an intentional motivator.

A.O.S (Armoured Operator Suit)

These technological marvels are designed to keep operators safe, not only whilst inside their metal giants but also when left out exposed on the battlefield. Constructed of a mixture of ultra light metal alloys and tough polymers over a high tech and skintight bodysuit, the A.O.S provides both safety and a tactical advantage for those equipped with it. The heads up display within the helmet provides a live stream of information such as ammo count, a rudimentary crosshair for your weapon, a motion tracker, your vital signs, compass, communication system, and much more. With the newer generations of Operators their A.O.S often mimic their mechs in terms of design, allowing them to copy the fighting style they would display inside their mechs whilst on foot.

yes i agree

How are you going to handle so many players? Currently at least seven prospects by the look of it, GM.

I'll accept characters sheets from everyone, the best of which will be granted a spot on the roleplay.

Should a particularly good one come up I may even extended the player limit.

So your policy is that a request for a submission isn't the same as full approval? Reasonable.

How are you going to manage the large numbers, if extant?

I'm unwilling to go above six total players honestly, and should it come to that I'm more than capable of being a GM for that amount.

If I get a lot of applications and have to turn people down they can at least find a little bit of solace in the fact that should somebody drop out (Or their character dies) I'll be drawing new recruits from the bios already submitted.

So what's the core story loop here? Kill Demons, maybe a big Demon shows up, back at base, repeat?

Well I suppose that is the core loop. However there will of course be other things going on, we'll be starting as fresh recruits so there will be a training portion of the roleplay, followed by the core loop with a bit of a mystery going on. There is a reason I held out of a few bits of crucial info!

Anyway this is the mock up for my mech so you guys can get a feel for what to expect and maybe start working on your own bios. I will get to work on a character bio next, but that should be a fairly simple affair so if you want to get your own one up before then be my guest.

Mech: X-700 (Fondly nicknamed Drake)

Class: Paladin

Description: Modified by the B.E.S.D (British experimental science division) X-700 has been specialised to achieve victory through superior firepower, quite literally. Equipped with a fire and heat based kit, this mech is the result of several experimental technologies coming together in unison. The most important of these is the zero point reactor that keeps X-700 running, an unique powersource that draws its energy from another dimension. Now this has its advantages, a reactor like this never has to be replaced unless damaged and gives off more energy than any one mech could ever need. The main drawback is that it’s hot. Really hot. So hot in fact that if installed in any normal mech it would destroy it, melting it’s internals from the inside out. So the lovely madmen at the B.E.S.D decided it would pair perfectly with their newest alloy, the creatively named A-11. A- 11 is strong but not too heavy that it wouldn’t be viable for mech construction. It’s most important feature is that it retains its structural integrity at incredibly high temperatures, allowing it to be used in tandem with the zero point reactor. Heat is purposely funneled through the mech so that the longer it operates the hotter it’s outer armour becomes, rendering it too hot to handle for any demons that get too close. Aesthetically X-700 takes themes from two of Britain’s most combat heavy eras, WWll and ye ole days of knights in shining armour. Painted a dark military green and standing at 37 feet, “Drake” is an intimidating sight. Humanoid in shape it has a red visor is fitted into the head of the mech, with a more traditional metal visor that can slot down over it for additional protection in battle. A classic warpaint design sits proudly over the chest of the mech, the draconic maw and eyes motif that can be found on many WWll era planes. These rows of teeth are strategically set so that when the armour around X-700’s reactor opens up it looks as if the mouth itself has opened.

Weapons/ equipment: X-700 is usually equipped with the Horizon arms type 48 , a fully automatic 60mm chain that fires 3 inch slugs. The type 48 is belt fed and has a capacity of 150 rounds.

Two wrist mounted flamethrowers allow the mech to dish out two huge jets of fire, perfect for area denial and clearing out hordes of smaller foes.

A huge knife is hidden in the right shoulder pauldron of X-700, constructed using A- 11 so that it may be superheated. This comes in useful when a demon is covered in any kind of armour plating, allowing it to burn through with relative ease.

Should its zero point reactor overheat it can be exposed to form an intense heat based weapon, although doing so also puts the mech at great risk.

Other abilities include frag grenades, a “Flame cloak” and extra thick plating on the knuckles, allowing for a brawler piloting style if unarmed.

I was planning on making my mech based around energy weapons (plasma cannons, lasers, etc.), so what kind of energy weapons are available to be used?

I'm not too concerned about the specific details (You can deal with that yourself) but yeah rudimentary plasma and laser weapons are up for grabs.

Designation: M-114B “Abrams”

M-114B is the result of a combined effort of the United States and Japan, via the Joint Special Research Task Force. This massive mech stands at 45 feet, with bulky armor making it seem bigger than it really is.
The sole purpose of this mech is to deliver overwhelming damage at close to medium range. It’s armor was designed to take as much damage as possible without failing, and is made of a composite that can absorb kinetic energy and add it to the mech’s power reserves. The design of the armor is also very specific, with bulky armor plating over a second set with a lower profile.
The mech’s aesthetic is semi-organic in nature, with the lower set of armor being more organic in design, fitting a human silhouette. The outer set doesn’t cover the entire mech, usually not covering the joints. The mech’s head is built into the lower armor, and it has two visors, both of which glow purple when the mech is active. The lower armor is painted matte black and the upper armor a dull gray. It also has several logos painted on: the US and Japanese flags, and the seal of the JSRTF.

Weaponry: M-114B is focused on energy weapons, and it utilizes both its composite armor and onboard reactor to wield a large variety. It’s main weapon is a Lockheed Mitoma plasma cannon, which tends to overheat after periods of extended use. It also uses a dual-use assault rifle, capable of firing standard rounds and laser bursts. Finally, it is equipped with a forearm mounted plasma launcher and a shoulder-mounted railgun. M-114B’s design also allows for use of other energy weapons, allowing it to be equipped with new energy weapons.

This is just preliminary, I'll probably add more later.
