  • LEFT BEHIND

On the floor of an unrecognizable and dilapidated barn, several strangers-- all young adults from all kinds of backgrounds-- begin to wake. Their joints ache with a dull, throbbing pain and their heads pound with grogginess and confusion. They have no idea how long they've all been asleep, but there are more pressing matters.

    Where are they?

Upon exiting the barn with the expectations of some answers, the strangers discover more questions. The overgrown grass, weeds, and the rusted pickup truck would make anyone believe the plot of land had been abandoned. However, the farmhouse appears to be in decent condition and even has a fresh coat of paint.

The inside state is also well-kept. Three floors high and yet, there isn't one speck of dust. The fridge and cabinets are filled with food that won't be expiring for a while. At least according to the calendar pasted to the fridge with a magnet agrees. Apparently, it is now August. The last anyone could recall, it had been May.

With the few possessions that had been transported with them and their memories, the strangers have next to no connection with their previous life. Despite the electricity, gas, and water functioning, there is no signal. The only television options are the collection of DVDs and VHS tapes left on the shelves of the television stand while phones won't send texts. Taking a trip into the forest that surrounds the farm won't do any good, there is nothing to find. The strangers will soon come to realize that no matter what they do, they always end up right where they started.

All seems lost and worthless. That is, until things inexplicably begin to change. Will they work together or allow things to spiral into chaos?

LEFT BEHIND

Rules
1. All RPN rules apply.

2. This group will be for advanced roleplayers only. Good grammar, punctuation, and syntax are necessary. In addition, posts are expected to be 500+ words. If you cannot confidently and comfortable comply to these expectations, this roleplay probably isn't for you.

3. Discord is necessary for out of character chatting and planning. The actual roleplay will take place on RPN, but all of the out of character discussion will take place in a Discord server.

4. This roleplay is application-based and NOT first-come, first-serve. I will be setting a deadline for character sheets and on that day, the accepted people will be sent the Discord server link in PMs.

5. Once the role play begins, please be able to post at least once a week. Real life with always come first, but this is to keep things moving along.

6. For maturity and comfort's sake, please be 16+ when applying.

About Me
Howdy! My name is Oliver! I've had this idea sloshing around inside my head for a very long time. It might sound very similar to the show The Society, which is a good reference point but not at all necessary to have seen before in order to join.

This roleplay will be character driven, but has sci-fi and mystery themes. I am looking to accept only a small group of people-- between 6-8 probably. I will be making an ooc thread, so if there are any questions go ahead and put them there or send me a pm. I look forward to seeing what kinds of characters people create!

Character Sheets
Here is a list of things to include on your character sheet. I'd love to see some diverse character. Please keep in mind I am only looking to accept between 6-8 people with one character per person.

-

PERSONA

personality:
Quiet, cautious and oddly brave for being a blind girl. It may take her a little longer to get something done, but she will find a way to make sure it happens no matter what.

Alignment:
True Neutral

Likes:
Her twin brother, jokes, puns, reading (Braille) and practicing what little martial arts she was able to learn growing up.

Dislikes:
People pitying her or acting like she's weaker than anyone else, being separated from her twin brother, being home for extended periods of time, Cake, candy of any fruit variety.

Losing her Twin, Her Parents, Guns and Spiders.

Ailments:
Complete and total blindness in both eyes - wears blindfold to keep her eyes shut to minimize additional sun damage.

Relationships:
None at the moment, but isn't against one if it pops up.

History:
Arinn had a pretty rough life as a member from the famous Nordes clan in Ireland. Her father had always been extra strict with her, despite her being born blind. It didn't stop him from putting her through rigorous education and physical training to make sure that she could take care of herself, no matter the situation she found herself in. She was raised with the constant pressure from both her Mother and Father about one day leading the family with her Twin Brother and over the years learned to deal with her life by refusing to let herself show any real emotion in front of anyone other than her brother. Though, because of this, she excelled at school and could even play most sports blind - by feeling the slight shifts in wind/air pressure around her skin or listening real closely for people's footsteps. Distancing herself from her family, she grew more attached to her twin brother, developing sort of a dependent addiction to him, always needing him close by her side in any circumstance. Being separated from him for too long takes it's toll on her psyche, eventually changing into physical symptoms resembling drug withdrawal if separated for more than two weeks.

She's not sure what she was doing prior to waking up in this strange place, but she was positive her brother was with her...only...he didn't seem to be here now. Try as she might, she just can't seem to recall anything major prior to suddenly waking up here in this strange place wearing god only knows what....hopefully her kidnapper decided to leave her in the dress she was already wearing and not change her into something else...that would be...bone chilling.

-

PERSONA

personality: Elise is fairly quiet and shy, just like any other confused young lady would be. However, her silence is not due to social anxiety, but for the lack of interaction she has had with others. Keeping to herself was how she was raised and it might always be that way. The best way to describe her is as a welcome mat, she is a huge pushover and often believes she is burden upon everyone. The slightest inconvenience could easily be taken as her fault, rendering her helpless for sticking up for herself. Although Elise is quiet, a push over and easy target, she is a pure soul. Her tragic background explains why she is the way she is, but surprisingly has not turned her bitter. She's never had a close friend, but isn't opposed to the idea of having one.

History:
(warning: mentions of death, neglect, trauma, abuse)

Despite being raised in a wealthy home, Elise had the unfortunate experience of losing her mother at birth, leaving her father a mess. He rapidly declined throughout Elise's years of growing, lashing out on her in any way he could. It was often that Elise would be caught in the crossfire of one of her father's outbursts, leading to a broken and crooked look on life. It was only after the first seven years of Elise's life that her father became more aggressive and abusive. It would range from unnecessary punishments, loss of dinner privilege, all the way to bruises and scrapes.

The only "good thing" she had in life was the ability to go to school and receive an education. Other than so, there was no such thing as friends, sleep-overs, or gossip. A few months after Elise turned 18, her father fell hard, resulting in a stroke and then soon death. Paramedics did question Elise, but nothing was to be said from her. The only thing she could say was. "I hope he doesn't go to where Mother is." Eventually after being interrogated and an autopsy report was received, it was ruled that Elise was the victim and from then on, she has been on her own.

Winston Jacobs.
dossier.
name : winston uhuru jacobs
nickname(s) : n/a
d.o.b : july 1st
age : 27
gender : cis male
sexuality : demisexual
visage.
height : 6'2" / 187 cm
weight : 188 lbs / 85 kg; muscular frame and broad shouldered
hair : black; styled as a short afro but occasionally trimmed into a crewcut fade
eyes : winston's deep-set eyes are such a dark brown they almost seem black. he's once been told his eyes look calmly intelligent
skin : dark brown
race/ethnicity : black; he doesn't know about his ancestry and doesn't feel deeply tied to it, so he's more comfortable calling himself black
misc. : his most distinguishing features are his high cheekbones, full lips, well-trimmed beard and pearly smile
face claim : broderick hunter
persona.
personality : Winston's stone-faced demeanor and big size may look a little intimidating to a stranger passing by, but he's actually a gentle soul and quite friendly. He's a very nurturing person who enjoys giving people comfort and security above all else because he believes everything has a right to grow. He shows his compassion in small unspoken ways, like giving his jacket when someone is cold or remembering how a friend prefers their coffee. But he'll offer charity to just about anyone—even complete strangers. Others' needs come before his own and oftentimes he'll stretch himself too thin by trying to take care of everyone he loves.

Winston stays calm in the face of conflict and rarely gives in to aggression, and it shows when he is not provoked by insults aimed at his person. However, he will wholeheartedly protect those who have trouble speaking for themselves even to the point of becoming overprotective. He has integrity and a strong moral compass, so he'll ultimately keep his word and conduct himself in an honorable way that adheres to rules (as long as the rules are not unjust). Winston needs the company of others every now and then, otherwise he's subjected to being alone with his thoughts and—with his history—he can be downright harsh on himself.
alignment : lawful good

dislikes : clutter, violence, riding airplanes, cold weather, fake plants, most fast-foods chains, sweet & sour combination, cats

ailments : complicated grief and mild insomnia
skills : gardening, communication, great listener, memorization, problem-solving
inventory :
gardening tote bag -
✦ small hand tools for gardening
✦ notepad and pen
✦ hydro flask
✦ seed packets for vegetables, fruits, and herbs
✦ fertilizer
pockets -
✦ leather wallet
✦ phone and portable charger
✦ engraved wedding band attached by chain
✦ a folded handwritten note
history.
background (CONTENT WARNING: mentions of drugs, violence, and suicide) : Winston was born as an only child to Tyrese and Sasha Jacobs, a devoted mother and father and a couple deeply in love. For majority of his childhood, he was raised in the ghetto of Michigan, so part of his living situation was less-than-ideal for a time. His parents were always scraping by financially, and more often than not they had to grow their own food in what little space they had for a backyard. Winston's mother taught him how to properly care for herbs, fruits, and vegetables since she learned from her father. Winston immediately loved it. At the age of eight, he started visiting the public library and borrowed informative books about perennials, flowers, trees, and exotic fruits. He dreamed of having his own botanical garden grander than life itself.

Despite not having many luxuries, the people in his neighborhood were like a second family to him and he was a happy. He got along with the other kids, stayed out of trouble, and received decent grades in school. His father, Tyrese, was tired of working two low-paying jobs just to barely have what they needed. He wanted the best for his son and hated how he couldn't provide more for him. He had the best intentions in mind when he began selling cocaine during the odd hours of the night. It wasn't a secret to Sasha, either. He stashed away the money he collected from drug deals so that the family would have the means to move out of the ghetto and have funds for a better education for Winston.

But on a deal gone bad, Tyrese was shot to death in an alleyway. Winston was only twelve years old at the time and was too shocked to grieve in the moment. On that same night, his mother packed their belongings, took the stashed money, and drove a few states away with Winston in the passenger seat. Sasha purchased a house in a safer neighborhood and they began a fresh start in a different city. A girl named Maria was one of the first people to talk to Winston when he attended the new school. Aside from being one of his best friends, she soon became his first love and she felt the same. They were high school sweethearts and the "it" couple of their graduating class.

He came to the decision that she was the woman he'd want to grow old with and proposed to her with a beautiful engagement ring, to which Maria wholeheartedly accepted. While Maria pursued a doctorate degree in biology, Winston was entirely content keeping his gardening job to ensure they could have a home and financial security for their newlywed days. Life is full of surprises though. Before they could properly plan for the wedding and set a date, Maria became pregnant with his child. Maria was frantic since the pregnancy wasn't planned; Winston was elated but nervous because he always wanted kids of his own someday. It just happened sooner than either of them expected.

Twenty-four-years-old was still a young age to become a parent, but he accepted his responsibilities in stride and stayed with Maria every step of the way. They attended parenting classes together, he catered to her every whim, and made sure he was present for the birth of his daughter—who arrived early. When Winston laid eyes on his newborn baby, he cried tears of joy. They named her Evelyn. Since she was premature, she had to be closely monitored in the NICU for any complications. Winston visited the hospital every day for long periods, worrying and praying for his child's health while also supporting Maria through her baby blues. After a few weeks, Evelyn's condition was stabilized and she was discharged. Then their new life as a family truly began.

Winston agreed to take care of Evelyn while Maria continued to stay in school for her education. It was an arrangement that worked very well for them. Though they weren't perfect parents for every obstacle, they turned out to be a balanced, tight-knit family. Most important of all, Evelyn was happy and loved. One night in particular seemed ordinary. Maria went out in the evening while Winston put Evelyn to sleep and placed her in the crib they put in their bedroom for easy monitoring. Tired from his work shift that day, he dozed off in his chair. When Maria came back, they discovered their five-month old daughter wasn't breathing.

Winston had never felt more afraid. He rushed her into the living room and tried to resuscitate her, but to no avail. Evelyn was already gone. Paramedics were called and they determined the cause of death was SIDS. When Evelyn died, so did Winston's world. He fell into a deep spiral of depression. Maria dealt with her grief differently; she grew distant and cold. She buried herself in her studies because she didn't want to accept what happened. Although she never said it out loud, he knew she blamed him for their daughter's death. Maria called off the engagement and abandoned Winston when he needed her most.

His state of mind grew worse. His mother and friends tried to console him, but no matter how much they attempted to be his emotional support or tried to convince him to seek professional help, he refused it and couldn't forgive himself. Many nights he cried himself to sleep and seldom ate. Though he couldn't have done anything to prevent what happened, he was convinced Evelyn's death was his fault. Winston's unhindered grief was what eventually led him to his breaking point. He wrote his goodbyes and swallowed a few handfuls of over-the-counter pills, hoping to overdose. But he somehow regained consciousness and found himself at a barn.

relationships -
mother: Sasha Jacobs; alive; a spiritual but progressive woman who supported Winston through everything. It's because of her that he found his belief in God and his love for gardening. They had a good relationship, but it became strained. Neither his faith nor his mother was enough to stop him from attempting suicide.
father: Tyrese Jacobs; deceased; Winston fondly remembers his father's dry sense of humor and his raspy chuckle. He still has mixed feelings about the truth behind his death, but he misses him deeply nonetheless. Many times he wished he could've asked for his advice and wished he had more moments with him.
ex-fiancée: Maria Bennet; alive; she was his first love and the mother of his child. He was ready to spend the rest of his life with her, but after the tragedy that changed them both, she no longer felt the same way. Winston's broken heart still holds onto the past because he keeps his wedding band in his pocket at all times.
daughter: Evelyn Jacobs-Bennet; deceased; his baby girl was his pride and joy. Losing her so suddenly—and so soon—was an unimaginable pain that continues to hurt him today. He would do anything to bring her back if he could and often has intrusive thoughts of his guilt. A photo of Evelyn remains in his wallet.

aaliyah was born the second child of proud and successful south african immigrants. she was raised under constant scrutiny and high expectations, and she thrived to prove herself. she was a precocious young'in who crushed on fictional detectives like sherlock holmes and hercule poirot. so enamored was she with mysteries that her parents often joked she'd murder them just to aid in the investigation. the love never left her, either. immediately after high school, she began studying to get her bachelor's in journalism and public relations. she graduated at the top of her class, and got a job at a relatively decent publication company. though her youth left her often underestimated, she attempted to prove herself through work ethic and making even the most mundane of stories seem riveting. prior to her technical disappearance, she was independently investigating a case which she hoped would truly kickstart her career.

Subject is introverted and mildly misanthropic. Typically taciturn and reticent, compares social interaction to anaerobic exercise. Unconcerned with most others’ thoughts and opinions, views those incapable of self-sufficiency unworthy of consideration. Stoic and nearly ascetic in nature, placing little value on material possessions and earthly attachments. Occasionally appears disconnected, as though apathetic or jaded. Often insensitively honest, without filter or visible empathy. Exhibits dark, deadpan humor and generally low affect.

Chuck was born and raised on his parents’ off-grid homestead in Idaho, where he was homeschooled in a general education curriculum and acquired a comprehensive working knowledge of a wide variety of subjects related to the maintenance of the family farm. They were part of a loose network of like-minded families in the area, among whose children Chuck was occasionally socialized. Though intended to be the first of many offspring, Chuck’s mother became infertile following his birth.

The daily demands of the homestead’s continued operation and his relative isolation limited his opportunities for social development, but he came to be satisfied with the life he had with his family. Chuck found fulfillment in his chores and genuine happiness in the countryside, the small pleasures of birdsong and jobs well-done proving enough for him. His relationships with his mother and father were as close and nourishing as a child could have asked for, and in many ways his childhood was an idyllic ideal. He elected against attending college, content instead to continue assisting his parents with the homestead until he was ready to build one of his own.

Chuck’s mother suddenly took ill shortly after his twentieth birthday and came to pass away by year’s end. His father was consumed by grief, allowing the property to languish as he fell victim to increasing self-medication, prescribed in the throes of crippling despair. Months elapsed before the morning his father awoke him, presented him with one hundred thousand dollars in cash, and asked him to leave. Chuck accepted, and has neither spoken to his father nor returned to his childhood home since.

His life thereafter has been lived on the road, traveling the country in an old RV in pursuit of something he used to have but can no longer identify. He pauses every few months to find a simple job as a bartender or farmhand, earning just enough to top off his nest egg before returning to vagrancy.

APPEARANCE

abe.jpg

Height: 211 cm | 6'11"

Weight: 164 kg | 363 lbs

Hair: Brown

Eyes: Green

Skin: Fair but somewhat ruddy

Race/ethnicity: Close German [mother's side] and Irish heritage [father's side]

Misc: Particularly broad and muscular

Face Claim: Dustin Milligan

____________________________________________

PERSONA

Personality
Do not mistake the stoic nature of Abraham Wake as coldness, for few are as honest in their kind and gentle nature as he. Unflinching and tender, Abe is a solid rock, a solace for others, and in his quiet and hand-lending self, one finds a hearth, a lighthouse within a whirlwind tempest. A quiet seadog who tends the flock, but make no mistake: Fear the wrath of a kind and practical man.

Alignment: Chaotic good

Likes: Rainstorms, the ocean, seafood, cooking, campfire stories, reading, writing, maritime folklore, marine biology

Dislikes: Too much talking, summer weather, steamed broccoli / carrots [you heard me], saying good bye

Fears: Crowds, public speaking, having to make promises

Ailments: Severe anxiety and moderate depression; Insomnia

____________________________________________

Skills: Incredibly strong, hunter-forager pro, highly resilient [especially to very cold temperatures], very patient, deceptively intelligent [though not too exceptionally so]

Inventory: An old whale-bone knife, with a bowie-style blade and a serrated back-edge

Relationships
Thomas Wake - Father
A lighthouse keeper and fisherman that taught his son everything he knew, and offered twice the love of a father for the sake of his dead wife

History
A child born during a rainstorm in Maine, Abraham Wake was cursed to kill his mother in birth. An early birth, and trapped by the raging current, the boy was born into a metal tub, and his mother, Adrianne, already ill, had fell into a sleep she never awoke from. Raised on stories such as Moby Dick and The Old Man & The Sea, raised on a lighthouse island some miles from rocky shore, raised on fish and fishing, it would be no suprise to see Abraham had taken up the maritime interests from his father. An early riser, as he had to be, as Abraham was far from any school, but no less attended, the boy had always been quiet, and more often than not, nervous around strangers, and thus companionship was a hard chore that seemed simply not worthwhile. For the vast majority of days, it was simply his father, he, and the ocean. His father was a kind man, who respected his sons preferences for quietude, while no less maintaining an active life. Abe himself had preference for knowledge over action, in contrast with his father, but days helping his father tend the lighthouse and catch their own meals no less offered him brawn as well. A quiet life, uneventful as the years passed, Abe sailed the tides of life into the industry of commercial fishing, a career that offered solace away from the masses, and quiet from the mainland. However, he no less attended college classes, majoring in marine biology, hoping to eventually persue a career down that path.

History.

In the parish of Iberia, Louisiana the Beaumont family were well known among the community. Their family history was often viewed as something to look up to and a level of success to strive for. The Beaumonts are fourth generation farmers with humble beginnings, as the family started off with only a small amount of land and with no tools they cut sugarcane by hand. They were met with many challenges as the years passed and the number of black farmers began to steadily increase. The Beaumont’s were met with threats and setbacks. From the bank stalling their loans or giving them far less than what was needed, to dead cats placed beside their tractors and oil drained from their vehicles. Hard times fell on the family but still they prevailed, unlike many unlikely families in the same situation.

Babettè grew up on her family’s impressive 5,000 acre land, within a plantation she had been told was where her family’s history began. In a contrast to its cruel and haunting history Babettè’s home was filled with love and laughter, there was never a dull moment within the Beaumont household. Babettè lived with her parents, along with her grandparents, aunt, uncle and their three kids. The four of them were also getting into something, from Juliette playing in her mother’s pearls to them making mud pies and harassing the family dogs. A lot of her family lived within different houses on the property, staying close in order to manage the farm together. So Babettè was never really alone.

She grew up learning how to manage a farm. She’d often train behind her father like a lost puppy, watching as he tended to the crops and animals. There were many times where she’d sit on his lap while in his tractor or walk through the giant stalks of sugarcane. Things were the same with her mother, only Babettè was taught how to learn about the land around her and garden.

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Appearance/Persona
APPEARANCE

Height: 5’9”

Weight: 139 lbs

Hair: Just below chin length, thin hair with fringe bangs she sometimes pushes to the sides. The color is a light red, almost tawny brown. Not very textured and tends to become staticky easily.

Eyes: A muddy, greyish blue set slightly further apart than average and a studious brow

Skin: Warm fair complexion with lightly colored freckles all over her face and body

Race/ethnicity: Irish American

Misc: Her freckled face and academically tom boyish style

Face Claim: Maya Thurman-Hawke

PERSONA

Personality: Veta is an academic. Fueled by curiosity and a natural hunger for knowledge, most of her motivation and decisions stem from an educated mindset. Impulsivity and spontaneity are foreign, distant concepts to her. She is a planner instead, taking time to list out the possible outcomes of a situation and always weighing the pros and cons of anything. She’s been criticized in the past for her boyish demeanor, lacking the manners and etiquette typically seen as proper “ feminine” behavior. Veta can be quite blunt and brutally honest, as her mindset sometimes omits the consideration of feelings in favor of fact.

Alignment: Lawful Neutral, Veta Likes to take a fully educated approach before making any decisions, but she more often than not sides towards the more good natured path.

Likes: Tea, sunny afternoons, fall and spring, fireplaces, pumpkin, warm spices, books, vinyl records

Dislikes: bright lights, extreme weather (summer/winter), overly sweet food, gummy candy, lack of plans

Fears: heights, lack of control

Ailments: Generalized anxiety disorder. Veta worries about a lot, no matter how minute the problem. The main way she combats this is by trying to extend as much control as possible over a situation. When feeling as though she has lost control or out of her depth, she is prone to anxiety attacks.

History

Skills: Obscure knowledge, latin, critical thinking, conflict de escalation/resolution, resourceful, self sufficient

Inventory: phone, keys, wallet, pocket dictionary, pepper spray, planner containing to do lists and full year calendar (riddled with notes), pens, sticky notes

History: Veta grew up in an average new england household in the suburbs of Burlington, Vermont. At the age of five, her parents divorced, leaving her to live with her father and spend occasional weekends and weeks with her mother. The divorce never seemed to bother her, but it caused her view of the stability and usefulness of marriage to become less stable and ideal than most.
Her father was a professor at a local college, instilling an acquaintance with knowledge within Veta at a decently early age. Throughout her primary education, Veta was typically teased as being the “teacher’s pet” or “bookworm”. She didn’t see any problem with being considered bookish or academic, and the teasing rolled off of her shoulders easily. After all, in her household it was always something to aspire to. She continued through her education with a small group of friends and the occasional boyfriend (brief), none of the relationships strong enough to last through to college.
Veta attended Dartmouth for English and Literature, gaining the passageway into a successful career in publishing. She currently works at a publishing company in downtown Burlington as an editor. She hoped to start her masters degree shortly before everything was erased. The last thing she remembered before waking up was leaving work for the day.
