Damsels and Dragons

Humorously: Lighten the mood.  We're one of the few who does not freeze in her presence out of respect - no one else will make her laugh.

Empathize.

Also, we need to let her know she can drop her living goddess act in front of us.   She can be herself in front of us.

Currently in the middle of a tie between humor and empathy, I figure I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon for a tiebreaker vote to occur, then write up a post. If no tie breaker happens, I'll just flip a coin and let chance decide.

EDIT:

1d2 to decide. 1 is a vote for Empathetic, 2 is a vote for Humorously.

1d2 with a result of 1, Empathetic gets the vote tiebreaker vote. Post should be up sometime today.

"I can see how that must have been, going from losing your parents to having the weight of the world resting on your shoulders." Jason said in sympathy. He then paused, and reconsidered. "Well, no actually, I can't. I can't even imagine what that must have been like." He said. "You seem to be doing pretty well at coping with how unfair life has been treating you. Most people I known would have buckled under the pressure by now."

"Thank you, that is kind of you to say." Matilda said, turning back to the sea. "In truth, sometimes I feel unsure of my purpose, or my own ability to succeed." She said. "The powers granted to me are manifold, true, but this does little but ensure that any failings are my own, and all my successes are the due to my boons."

"I wouldn't go that far." Jason said, joining her in looking over the sea. "A person's success or failings aren't defined by what advantages they have. They give you more options, sure, but the choices you make are what defines you, not your birth or status." Saturday morning cartoon cliches? Really? Jason kicked himself mentally, was that really the best he could do? Whatever, power thought it and pretend it didn't happen. "If you believe in yourself, everything will turn out for the best."

Oh goddamnit.

Matilda  seemed to brighten up at this. "Thank you, again." She said. "I did not expect that hearing such things would help, but I feel much better knowing you are willing to say them." She said. "And what of yourself?" Matilda asked, looking at him. "Do you feel as though you are becoming more comfortable with my world and it's people?"

Jason sighed and shook his head. "No, not at all." He said. "I miss my home and I still want to go back as soon as possible." He moved to sit down on a large rock nearby, crossing his arms and thinking back on his world. "This place is too different from my home for me to ever really feel comfortable. The spells I know let me cheat a bit, keep myself hygienic and let me understand people, but all of that is just a bandaid. It doesn't change that, fundamentally, I'm a stranger."

A moment of silence passed between them, with the only thing breaking the quiet being the sound of the sea in the distance. Matilda moved to sit next to him on the rock, saying nothing for a moment as she made herself comfortable.

"I am sorry. Truly." She said, looking at him. "Were it within my power to do so, I would send you home with a waive of my hand. The problems of my world must seems small to you, and I cannot say that I would be any different in your place." She looked back over the sea, and up to the moons where they were hung in the sky. "But I am glad you are here, even if you do not wish to be."

"Well, thanks." Jason said lamely, suddenly feeling like he had done something wrong. "It's not absolutely awful here, there are some things that are pretty neat." He looked up and followed her gaze. "Except the moons." He said, scowling at the twin orbs in the sky. "I hate the moons."

Matilda looked back at him, utterly bewildered. "The moons?" she asked, struggling to comprehend his distaste. "Why do the moons offend you?" She asked, looking back and forth between Jason and the sky.

"There's two of them." Jason said, pointing at the celestial bodies accusingly. "One is green, the other one is pink!" He said, as though stating the obvious would some how make their grave sin apparent to her.

For her part, Matilda continued to look completely lost, until slowly a smile spread over her face and she began to struggle to avoid giggling at the sheer absurdity of it all. "Of all the things that could offend you about my world, I can not believe the moons are the most grievous of them all." She said, trying to maintain her composure.

Jason, for his part, doubled down in his fury. "Of course they do! Everyone knows you only need one moon in the sky, two is redundant, and the color is completely nonsensical!" He said, continuing to pontificate dramatically. "What makes a moon green? What makes a moon pink!?"

Sadly, any empathy Matilda might have offered him was lost under another fit of giggles, and it was several seconds before she was able to speak properly without grinning like a loon. "You don't truly hate them that much, do you?" She asked after she had regained control of herself.

"Ehhhh." Was Jason's eloquent and well thought out reply, as he waived his hand in a non-committal fashion. "They're a reminder that I'm not home, which is bad. But I can't pretend they don't exist, which helps." He said.

"What are the moons in your world like?" Asked Matilda, looking back up to the sky.

"There's only one moon, and it's not pink or green." He said. "It hangs in the sky like a giant pearl, and in the right conditions, you can see a face looking down on the world."

"That does sound like something to be missed." Matilda said. "There is no face on our moons, but we have a saying that they are the eyes of heaven, making sure the world is moving according to celestial design." She looked back over at him. "Perhaps that might help, to think of the similarities between our moons?" She asked.

"I guess so." Jason said. "At least until I remember there's a war on the horizon." The reinforcements Matilda had sent for had arrived earlier in the day. Over two hundred men in armor had set up camp not far from the village, with more reported to be on their way once supply lines had been established.

Matilda nodded somberly. "I know you don't feel like this is your war, but we really could use you." She said, once more.

"I'll think about it." Jason said, which was the best he could give her right now.

The two tell silent, watching the sea waves in quiet contemplation. For his part, Jason's thoughts were occupied by memories of home, and what he would be doing right now if he were still in his world. Given the time, he would probably be drinking with friends at a bar, since it was a saturday.

His mind lost in thoughts of home, he almost didn't see the strange happenings on the sea. The waves appeared to be carrying something with them, towards the mainland. Several somethings, from the look of it.

Shaken from his thoughts, he looked closer at the oddity. The somethings appears to be lined up in a wedge shape, dozens of them, from what he could tell. All moving purposefully, sails fluttering in the wind.

...Sails.

"Matilda, look!" Jason said, shaking her from her own thoughts. She stood up with him to get a better look, standing on top of the rock they had been sitting on. Her reaction to seeing the ships was telling, her hand went to her sword and drew it, an unconscious reaction to a grave threat.

"It's them, isn't it?" He asked, looking from her back to the sea.

"Yes." Matilda said, watching the ships advance. "The Black King's forces have arrived."

What, why is there only one option?

Fine, I'll vote to end chapter one.

>End Chapter One

Oh thank god, I was worried I wouldn't be able to start on the next chapter since no one had decided to end this one!

More seriously, since we seem to be between chapters at the moment, I thought I take the opportunity to get some feedback on the quest and how I've been running it.

What are your thoughts on the quest itself so far? Is the story to your liking? Any moments you liked best? Moments you could have done without?

Do you feel your choices are being respected? I can't always give everyone what they want, but I can try to accommodate as much as possible while still keeping to the story.

How do you feel about the characters? Admittedly, there are only four worth mentioning at this point and you control one of them, but I'd welcome your thoughts on them. Anything you like about them? Dislike?

Any other feedback you can offer would be welcome.

Alright, let me be the first one to answer a few of those questions - I only joined midway through, so I won't say all that much about the first posts; read through them, enjoyed them a lot, but didn't get the full voting experience there.

I feel like it's hard to pick out a single moment as the best/worst one - but I really enjoyed Gregori, in particular the vote whether to manipulate him or not. Those are the kind of choices that feel damn meaningful, even if they might not change anything in the future. In general, I feel like every voting option had some merit over the other options, which makes things that much more interesting - think we had mostly quite diverse results, and at least for me, every outcome was in some sense logical. Didn't have a single moment where I thought: "Why the hell did you vote for that?"

Characters: For some reason, I can only think of three of them right now - whoops. Already wrote about Gregori, I like Matilda as well - I'd call her rather cliched, but don't mean it in a negative way. In fact, it makes out her charm. As for the protagonist: Thanks to his unique name, it was basically predetermined that he'd make up for a great character - seems like he fits the general mood in this thread very well.

All in all: Great stuff, awesome writing, I'm always happy to see when you posted a new part. Let's hope someone else can come up with good proposals, since this here is probably not useful at all. Thanks for doing this!

Also: >End Chapter One.

Thanks for the feedback! The fourth character was the Black King, although considering most of his screen time has been through people talking about him, I guess he can't be considered a character in his own right just yet.

I'm glad you're enjoying it so far, and I'm glad you find all the choices are both reasonable and have their own merits. Often for me one of the hardest parts of writing a post is deciding how to end it/what choices to pose, because the two are often interlinked.

Just a heads up: With the holidays almost on us, I don't think I'll have the time or focus to devote to a post this week. Sorry for the delay, as well as the last minute notice. I thought I would be able to get a post up, but I underestimated the holiday drain.

Hope everyone has a good Christmas, though!

Silanon said a lot of what I would have said myself! Matilda is charming; I've talked to you already about how I want to see more of her. :P  Choices feel meaningful and natural; nothing doesn't make sense.

Well, I mean, there was that time we named the PC "Write in," but... that worked out too. XD

I'm interested to see why the Black King bothers with this endless dance! All that conquering and destruction takes effort, it's not a stasis state so he must have an objective, right? Something that is, to him, worth all the time and effort spent. I mean, I guess it could just be for the sake of chaos...

I'm really excited about the story and where it's going; the pace feels quick but that works for me. I'm digging the adventure and I'm ready to proceed FULL STEAM AHEAD.

My favorite moment was probably when Matilda held the door open with her fucking pinky finger or whichever it was, that was badass and a really well-timed reminder of how godly and endowed this character that you've also been trying to humanize really is. I'm looking forward to seeing Matilda (and Jason of course) in action, hopefully!

Jason seems grumpy and I love it. I want him to grump vocally and frequently.

I'm often impressed by how well you cater to the diverse wants of your readership, even while following the majority vote!

The feedback was very welcome, Dusky and Silanon! As a thank you gift, you may have one of your votes count twice for the duration of Chapter Two! Let me know when you decide to do so.

Now, let's see how we can escalate things~

/OOC

"Colonel, you an't be serious, that's suicide!" Cried Herschel in objection. The Mayor, Matilda, Jason, Colonel Martian were all gathered in the mayor's house, standing around the central table and discussing the news of the Black King's arrival. There was panic in the streets of the village, as people scrambled to grab whatever they valued most before fleeing. "We need your men to help with the evacuation, my people wont survive the journey on their own!"

"A surprise attack is the only way to prevent them from establishing a foothold!" Retorted Colonel Martian. "If the number of ships is accurate, there are over fourteen thousand troops that are about to make their landing on our shores. We cannot allow this to happen, or the war could end before it begins!"

The two men had been arguing in circles for a few minutes now. Colonel Martian was a senior officer of the Empire, who had served with distinction. There was some slight grey in his hair, but his powerful physique and well kept weapons and armor told any who looked at him that he was not to be trifled with.

Mayor Herschel, on the other hand was a portly man dressed in as fine a clothing as one could get on the outskirts of the empire. He was getting on in years, and with no children of his own, viewed the people of his village as his family.

Neither was making any headway at convincing the other to listen, and Jason feared that opportunity to do anything would be lost while they argued.

"Listen to yourself, man! You mean to march your hundreds against their thousands! You'll be killed to the man, and us along with you once they begin to make their advance!" Herschel said, desperately pleading for Martian to stop.

"We have surprise on our side." Martian repeated. "With the Magicians  on the cliff bluffs weaving their spells in support, the main force should be able to take out a significant number before they can dig in."

Before Herschel could reply, Matilda made her own opinions known.

"Enough!" She shouted, slamming her hand down on the table. A large gust of blue-white wind burst forth from the the impact, extinguishing candles, rattling windows, scattering unattended objects and staggering Martian and Herschel.

Both men immediately knelt before Incarnate Matilda, Chosen of Heaven and Ordained Slayer of the Black King. Even Jason was taken aback by the display, and looked uncertainly at Matilda and her new supplicants.

"Herschel, Colonel Martian is correct. This is our best and possibly only chance to drive back the Black King's forces." Matilda said, her tone one of absolute command. "We will position our forces, and once the moment presents itself, we will launch the attack."

"But... my Lady..." Herschel began weakly, trying to muster the courage to talk back to the Living God.

"I know, Herschel, but time is not on our side. Your people will have to make due." Matilda said, her voice no less firm.

Jason couldn't help but feel sympathy for the mayor. His whole world had been turned upside down in moments, and had been given no time to prepare. Perhaps the obvious parallels compelled him to speak out. "Do they really have to go it alone?" He asked, trying not to look like he was undermining Matilda's authority. "Can't a few men help escort the villagers? A squad, maybe?"

Both Martian and Herschel looked at Jason, one in surprise, the other in hope. "Young man." Said Martian, standing to his feet. "You are a foreigner to these lands, that much is clear, so I warn you to speak to the Incarnate with the proper respect."

"Thank you, Colonel, but Jason is here as a special advisor, and has been given the leave to speak his mind." Matilda said, raising her hand to quiet the officer. For his part, Martian simply nodded in deference to the Incarnate, though there was a subtle look of both confusion and frustration in his movements.

"Is it possible? Can you spare a group of men to assist with the evacuation?" Matilda asked.

"No, your Ladyship. We already drastically outnumbered, and I cannot afford to spare any of my men." Martian said.

"Then it is settled." Matilda said, as Herschel looked heartbroken. For a moment, Jason could swear he saw a twinge of regret crossing Matilda's face, but the newly darkened room prevented any real clarity.

"Well." Said a cranky, old voice. "I must say I'm impressed." There was a loud rapping noise, and the candles that had been extinguished previously burst in to light one more.

There stood Gregori, clad in what appeared to be dark violet robes, with a large claymore at his back and a gnarled, ugly staff in his hand. Across his chest and arms were bands of metal that vaguely resembled a chest plate and heavy gauntlets, were it not for the fact that they seemed to move when you looked at them.

Apparently the stories about him being a battle caster were not simply gossip.

"What are you doing here, old man." Snapped Martian, his hand on his sword. Apparently the crimes Gregori had committed had not been forgotten with the passage of time.

"Whatever I damned well please." Barked Gregori, shoving past Martian and standing in front of Matilda, who regarded with with a cool, level gaze.

"Here I was thinking that you'd be as soft as your predecessors." Gregori said, a vicious grin spreading across his face. "Too soft to sacrifice a village to save a Empire, too weak to condemn civilians to death to give your army a fighting chance." He said, his fingers playing across his staff in excitement.

"Your point, Gregori." Matilda said tersely, whatever patience she had been willing to afford the old wizard seemed to have vanished.

"My point is you may actually be worth my while. Someone worth following in to the violence and madness of the Black King." He said, before turning to Martian. "Send a group of men with this idiot's people." He said, jerking a thumb at Herschel. "I will more than make up the difference.

Martian hesitated for a moment and looked over at Matilda, who nodded her consent. "I never expected altruism from you." Martian said. "I would have though you would be long gone by now, not risking yourself for the people."

Gregori let out a guttural laugh. "Hardly. I'm here because my protege is here, and I suspect he would stay here even if I said otherwise." He said, looking at Jason.

What do you do?

Agree to stay. Goddammit, this is not our war, but I want to see a battle caster in action.

Fuck, we are stuck here.  Might as well help where we can.

Maybe in death, we can wake up from this nightmare and be back in our own world.

> Agree with the crazy old wizard, you're staying.

"You're right, Master. I'm staying." Jason said, moving up to the table and placing his hand on it. He had hemmed and hawed for long enough over the decision. It wasn't his war, not by a long shot, but there seemed like there was no avoiding it, now that it was practically on his doorstep. This world was his home for now, so the least he could do while he was stuck here was help out where he could.

Besides, he really wanted to see a battle caster in action.

Martian frowned, clearly displeased at the idea of a foreigner amidst his troops. Matilda and Herschel on the other hand, looked pleased. Herschel was practically crying with joy, as Jason's presence meant the presence of Gregori, and by extension, the subsequent evacuation of his people.

"Thank you, M'lord. He said, his voice choked with relief. "I will have the village evacuated within the hour. Good luck to you all, and may Heaven guide you." He said, bowing to Jason and Matilda. He then turned and quickly left, and you could hear him shouting instructions to the villagers to organize the evacuation.

"If you insist on staying I hope you'll be wearing something more appropriate than whatever that is." Colonel Martian said, frowning at Jason's clothing. "The Black King is one of the most dangerous forces the world has ever seen, and I wont have a liability on my battlefield." He said. "Get yourself a set of armor and a weapon from one of my quartermasters, then we'll see about where to put you."

"I've already got a sword, thanks." Jason said. "And I'll decide where I go once the fighting starts." He said.

Martian's frowned deepened in to a scowl. "Young man I will not have free agents compromising my battle formations. The Black King is a threat to everyone in the Empire, and the stakes are too high for anyone to just go wherever they want."

"Colonel, but I'm not one of your men, so don't order me around like I am." Jason said "I'm happy to help, but as a foreigner, what happens here isn't as important to me." He retorted, throwing Martian's words back at him.

It seemed to have an effect, and Martian visibly tensed in anger. Jason could tell that Martian wanted to lash out and give him a verbal beating, but with Matilda vouching for him and Gregori's presence dependent on his own, the man's options were limited.

"Very well." He said after a moment of pause. "Sargent!" He barked, and a woman armed to the teeth entered the room at his command. "Send word to Hemmick, his squad is to accompany the villagers as they evacuate. Have the magicians and the rest of the men make their preparations for an assault." He said. "We're up against superior numbers, so I want the casters working double time with their magics."

The woman gave a sharp salute and departed, ready to relay her commander's orders. Martian then turned back to Gregori and Matilda. "Alright, if there are no other outstanding issues, let's discuss the plan of attack." He said.

Talk quickly turned to the tactical layout of the beach where the Black King's forces were likely to make landfall soon, as well as the cliff bluffs that surrounded it Gregori gave a full rundown on how to best use surrounding terrain, having lived here for the better part of a few years. Matilda offered her own counsel, noting that a pincer maneuver between herself and the rest of Martian's forces would leave the Black King's forces with very few places to regroup and launch a counter attack.

While he made several disparaging comments about their quality of skill, Gregori said he would remain on the cliff bluffs with the other mages and provide support. Jason pointed out that by the time they had gathered their forces and met the Black King's landing party, the Moons were likely to be positioned directly opposite the Black Kings fleet, and their light would likely impede their ability to defend themselves if they timed it right.

"I didn't expect a civilian to remember to have such a grasp of the moons positioning. "Martian said, sounding slightly less irritated with Jason than before.

"I avoid looking at them whenever possible. Knowing when and where they'll be helps with that." Jason replied. This earned him a strange look from Martian, but was otherwise uncommented upon.

"Very well. I'll go rally my men and have them meet where Gregori indicated. Time is not on our side, so I suggest you make whatever preparations you need now. We wont have the time once the battle starts." Martian said, taking his leave.

Gregori let out a snort at the Colonels retreating back. "I better make sure his magicians know what they're doing. Idiots are probably bespelling the soldiers one at a time." He said, leaving as well.

That just left Jason and Matilda, the latter of whom was looking at the table in front of her with a pensive look on her face.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Jason asked, approaching her. Matilda looked up after a moment and shook her head.

"Nothing important, just going over the plan and trying to find any flaws with it." She said.

"Seems like a sound plan to me. Surround and attack when they're at their most vulnerable." Jason said, pulling up a chair and sitting at the table. "Martian seems like he's got a stick up his ass, but people like him tend to know what they're doing." He paused and considered this for a moment. "Actually, that's probably why they act like that."

Matilda nodded again, but didn't comment on Jason's description of the Colonel. "My concern right now is not the plan itself, but if it can survive without me. It think I may have made a mistake in suggesting the pincer maneuver." She said.

"...why would the plan need to go without you?" Jason asked, confused. "Don't tell me you're thinking of helping people evacuate instead."

Again, Matilda shook her head. "No, nothing like that." She said. "Jason, did you know that, in the centuries that the Black King has been assaulting these lands, no Incarnate has ever failed to drive him back?" She asked.

"I heard something like that, yeah." Jason said, recalling his discussions with the barman about the Queen of Storms and the King of Blades and their battles agains the Black King and his forces.

"Did you also know that, despite their success in driving him back, no Incarnate has ever survived their final battle with the Black King?" She said.

Jason felt his stomach drop. "No." He said, somberly. "I didn't know that." He said.

"Indeed." Matilda said. "I suspect that this will be a constant worry to me over the next few months, wondering if my role on the battlefield will be in jeopardy by a sudden appearance of the Black King. In the past he has always waited until his forces have had a solid foothold before coming across the Void Sea personally, but I still can not help but think of what might happen."

"No plan survives contact with the enemy."Jason said. "We can't worry about the maybes and could bes when we have a problem right in front of us that needs to be handled."

"...You are right." Matilda said after a moments pause. "Yes, of course. I cannot worry about this now. I have my duty as the Incarnate to uphold." She moved from where she was standing and began to talk towards the exit to the building. "If you will excuse me, I have my own preparations to make for the battle." She said.

Before exiting however, she paused and turned back to him. "Thank you for staying. I do not have many people I can consider friends, but you are one of them." She said, before disappearing in to the night.

Jason, surprised at this sudden revelation by Matilda, reacted too slowly to catch her before she left. Left alone with his own thoughts, he decided that the best course of action right now would be to get ready for the battle. Come what may, he had made his choice. Time to bare out the consequences.

Visit the apothecary to hopefully grab a few last things that might be of use during or after the battle. Then sit down in the midst of the market square, and start to sing the ten-hour version of "Diggy Diggy Hole".

XD I'll second the apothecary visit, but we absolutely should go get outfitted by one of Martian's quartermasters.

From there, we need to take a moment to put ourselves in the right frame of mind. I'd probably meditate or something, but if Jason has a preferred method of his own, he should go with that.

If we still have some time between that and meeting up with Gregori - I suspect we may not - we should check in with Matilda. Maybe offer some words of encouragement.

You can always sell it for scrap metal for phat lootz! I'd wager the chrome and steel would fetch a good price at the blacksmith. Not to mention the 'exotic' materials that make up the seating fabrics and the plastics.

You'd probably need a good Charisma score, to really get your money's worth.
